View Full Version : Great Movies You Hate

"Hate" may be too strong a word for some; "dislike" may be better. Define "great" how you will: wildly popular, critically esteemed, awarded/lauded, merely good.
Maybe I should have changed the title to "Great Movies That Give Me the Schpilkes."
If we're talking about Oscar winners, I dislike dozens of movies, including:
Forrest Gump (The kind of movie that's made for one's neighbors)
Yankee Doodle Dandy (I've always disliked Cagney in this)
Ordinary People
On Golden Pond
An Officer & a Gentleman (A pox on this one)
Terms of Endearment
Wall Street (Really hate it)
Moonstruck (I really hate this one)
City Slickers (Another one designed specifically to please one's bourgeois neighbors)
There are other esteemed movies I'm just sort of blah about:
Stage Door
None But the Lonely Heart
The Lost Weekend (I rooted for the bat)
Of Human Bondage
Doctor Zhivago
Kitty Foyle
The Grapes of Wrath (what Bertrand Russell called the "fallacy of the superior virtue of the oppressed")
Mrs. Miniver
Tootsie
Spartacus (I should really give Kubrick his own list)
Some movies I haven't seen, but I know I'd dislike:
Rain Man
Mississippi Burning
Schindler's List
Braveheart
Good Will Hunting
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Other movies I don't particularly dislike -- at least I thought I didn't -- but I would never watch again:
The Miracle Worker
My Fair Lady (watch the Wendy Hiller "Pygmalion" just once & this one will be blotto in your memory)
The Lion in Winter
Patton
GateandGarden

Pretty much all the ones you mentioned, with the exception of Tootsie and Of Human Bondage.
A Streetcar Named Desire
Rebel Without A Cause
National Velvet (Taylor at her most annoying)
Philadelphia
Castaway (pretty much anything with Tom Hanks)
Sabrina
The Godfather
Key Largo
Norma Rae
The Set-Up
They Call Me Mr. Tibbs
As Good As It Gets
The Shawshank Redemption
Out of Africa
Seabiscuit
The Usual Suspects
It's A Wonderful Life
Titanic
Foreign Correspondent
Alfie
Bottle Rocket
Buffalo '66
GypsySorcerer

Blaspheme! This movie is greatness!
Have you seen "The Life Aquatic"... yet? I thought it was pretty good, better even than Royal Tennenbaums which I could chalk up on the list as another "great" movie that I didn't really enjoy but that could also have to do with the fact that I was really sick when I saw it so all I can really remember is coughing and sneezing my head off.
Rushmore is still Wes Anderson's best movie to date though ;).

-LOTRI like the LOTR movies. I'm not fanatical like some, though. They did make me think Orlando Bloom rules. What hits me harder is David's disdain for Moonstruck and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest--two of my very favorite movies. Of course, almost anything with Cher works.
As for Shakespeare in Love, I really can't remember enough about that one to say whether or not I liked it.

I hate Shakespeare in Love... hate It's a Wonderful Life and Titanic, too. Also hate Dances with Wolves and almost anything of that ilk... Tootsie, definitely hate. Hate Pulp Fiction. Bored to tears by A Christmas Story.
Oh, and this probably shouldn't count, but everyone thinks Napoleon Dynamite is the funniest movie ever, and I thought it was the stupidest piece of crappy trash I've ever seen.
Sharon- I'm with you on loving Bottle Rocket. I loved A Life Aquatic, mainly for the music. David Bowie in Portuguese? Swoon.

Bottle Rocket has some hysterical moments, but it just doesn't do much for me for some reason.
I hated Life Aquatic with a passion. It was such a miserable failure in every sense of the word, I cringed throughout. Loved The Royal Tennenbaums more than Rushmore, though. :D

I love Woody Allen. Even when he's at his worst, he's still good. With the exception of Stardust Memories and Anything Else, of course, which I couldn't bear one bit.
My favorite Brooks film is the one with his wife, Anne Bancroft, where they're improv theater actors during WWII. That movie is hysterical.

I hate Tom Hanks films. I just cannot stand him personally and the roles he picks.
But Rebel Without A Cause. That's ma Jimmy. Not Page, the other one. The first star to also be a brilliant actor. It's hard to watch films from that era and not be put off by the dialogue, and due to this it also contrasted his acting. It's a pity he couldn't have worked with some of the scripts of today which deal with 'realism' a lot more than those in his day.
Hanks gets on my nerves like you wouldn't believe. He's simply an annoying actor, IMO. I can tolerate him in fluff like The Money Pit and The 'Burbs, but otherwise I'd rather draw up my grocery list than watch him.
I don't hate Rebel Without A Cause, but I don't love it and I would never watch it again. :sorry: It just left me cold for some reason.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Forrest Gump are two of my favorite movies. Even though I do generally despise Tom Hanks.
I think it would be easier for me to compile a list of actors I greatly dislike...it's a safe bet that anything with them in it is going to be something I hate.
Tom Hanks (love Forrest Gump, though)
Kevin Costner
Al Pacino
Robert DeNiro (but I loved Jackie Brown)
Dennis Quaid
Melanie Griffith
Joan Crawford
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Mel Gibson (except for the Mad Max movies)
Sylvester Stallone

Melanie can't pick good scripts to save her life, but I love her. She was doing good up until she made Milk Money, but then it was all over. One bad movie after another. Though she was fab in Lolita, RKO 281, and Another Day In Paradise, IMO.
And Jackie Brown? :wavey: One of the best movies ever. How do I love Pam Grier? Lemme count the ways...

Me, too. Most everything up until Milk Money was good (with the exception Bonfire of the Vanities  ). Something Wild is high on the list of my all-time favorite movies, she was great in that one. She also made a movie that no one else seems to have seen called "In the Spirit" with Marlo Thomas and Elaine May that is one of my faves. She was only in it for a few minutes, but the movie itself is quite the rare goodie. Wish they'd put it on DVD because my tape is so worn out that the picture is almost black and white.

The thing I can't stand in Mighty Aphrodite is the Allen-Bonham Carter relationship, like the Allen-Roberts relationship in Everyone Says I love you (but I liked all the rest). They were blatantly ridiculous, badly written and acted. At least he should have given to those actresses decent characters with a bit of a background.

Yeah, I actually agree. But when it comes to Mighty Aphrodite, I think the good outweighed the bad. There were scenes in that movie that had me on the floor and the cast was top-notch. Everyone Says I Love You was just terrible. The songs were terrible, the cast was terrible, the story was terrible, etc. I don't think I laughed once throughout. Thank the stars for Deconstructing Harry because I thought he had lost it all after Everyone Says I Love You. He needs to use Judy Davis more, in my opinion. She's got a spark to her when it comes to his material like no one else, save maybe Keaton and Farrow at times.

Many people adore this movie, I know. It's just that, I think Mel Gibson used violence as a vector to reach the audience, but didn't give any substantial edge to the characters. He shouted his message, but basically didn't have anything to say. He went to shoot in the same locations of The Gospel According to St. Matthew by P.P. Well, it's not surprising that many people adore The Passion, it's all about religion. Most people who believe in God, Jesus, and the Bible praise it as being a fantastic film that deeply moved them. Those of us who aren't religious and don't believe in any of that stuff have different views on it. Personally, I think it's a badly made movie, first and foremost. Heavyhanded as all get out, some awful acting, it's rather pretentious, and some of the directing bordered on amateurish.
