View Full Version : What do you do (when not posting)?

I get the distinct feeling that some of you have turned posting on the Ledge into your career. Others, like myself, probably have a job only to ignore the actual work component and instead continue posting on the board. In any event (and I really hope I'm not repeating a previous thread), I'm curious as to what everyone here on the board does to earn a living and pay for all of those concerts we've been attending. I'll go first....
I've been working at the Texas Capitol since I was a freshman in college. I didn't have a car, and the Capitol was walking distance from the dorm, so I got a job as a messenger. Then I interned for a state senator for my remaining three years, and after a post-graduating backpacking trip through Eruope two years ago, I came back to work full-time for the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services. After this biennial legislative session, which begins next week and ends in May, I hope to attend grad school to get a masters in public policy and eventually go on to garner world peace. Oh, and I'm single.

I'm a full-time graduate student, so I'm on winter break right now. Classes start again next week, so I probably won't be on here as much. (Or at least I shouldn't be.)
I graduate in May, though, so I'm also looking for a job. In fact, I'm sending in a resume today.

I'm an undergrad student on my winter break like Krista. I've been able to spend an insane amount of time on here over the break because I have no schoolwork and no job! :] But classes start again soon for me as well, and I'm going to miss being on here constantly. This place has made my break so fun! :)

I am a reporter/progam host. I work at a public radio station (an NPR member station) - and by day I'm a news reporter, I go out and cover stuff or I do phoners...and then at 4pm - I local host All Things Considered - I fill breaks and do two newscasts per hour - the newscasts aren't too long though - 2.5 -3 minutes long...
So when I'm not out covering stories I am usually sitting at my computer - and therefore check into the Ledge constantly while putting off work..such as right now when I should be pulling soundbytes and writing a story on consumer confidence....BUT the vending machine guy just got here and announced that our coffee machine would be free all day!!!! Woo hoo....it's horrid stuff - but it's free :blob1:

I work for a life insurance company. Though, I don't have Internet access at work, so if I'm on here, I'm at home. Thankfully however, I only live about five minutes from work, so I usually come home for lunch and get on here then. :D
Usually, if I'm not at work, then I'm home on the computer, either online or playing The Sims 2. I make occasional outings...I go the Austin Zen Center semi-regularly, I go out on a date every once in a blue moon, and I'm no stranger to the Zachary Scott Theatre or the Alamo Drafthouse.

I own 2 businesses and work for a third when my services are needed. My main business involves working with defense contractors and I can’t say much about it. My second business is part time. I’m a process server for a few law firms. I do skip traces on people that refuse to appear in court and I’m one of the guys that come to your door with papers saying you need to appear when no one else can seem to find you. The third involves working with bail bond agents and parole violations officers. I won’t say much about that either.

I work as an admin. However, this is the only job i've ever had where there is almost nothing to do. I hate it. If i condensed all the work i do in a normal day, it would probably take me 1 hour, 1.5 tops. Of course, I can't work like that. I have to sit here all day for when the phone rings  Luckily, I don't feel bad, cause my pay is commensurate with the amount of work...
I'm in school right now for paralegal studies. well, not right now, but, currently. Soon, I will have a better job.
I think it would be cool to work for a PI, though. I want to learn how to do skip traces! :D But, working for a PI is probably more fun in my head then in real life.
I drink and go out with my friends and sing and watch TV and do schoolwork and read and eat when i'm not posting. during various points of the year I go to chico.

I edit computer-type manuals (text books  ) for a publishing firm. I usually get a chapter a day and I go through the steps as written, with the software/hardware, make notes on errors as necessary, and then submit a report. Sometimes it seems boring, another day another chapter. But I learn so much, every single day I learn something new. I wish my company would give me a degree for that! I got mine in psych a "while" back, hehe.
I hop online while installing stuff, when I have an easier chap that didn't take too long, or when I am just plain procrastinating (right now), hi Deanne, hehe :wavey:

I work at a pharmaceutical company doing data entry and materials management. Any raw material that comes in that building I process in the computer system, and all the final product (and all inbetween) I account for. Pretty boring, but it pays well.
Other then that, I was playing Balloon Lagoon with my lil one tonight, laundry, dishes, and all other house-hold chores. I regularly chauffeur Sara around to school and doctor and dentist appointments, gymnastics... blah, blah, blah. For myself, if I'm not cleaning the house on the weekends, I go shopping!!!! :D :D

When I was a high school lad, I worked in a nursing home too. First, I played in the garden mowing lawns, pulling weeds, and laying barkdust. Then, I swept and mopped the floors. The coup de grace was working in the laundry my last year of high school. Nutty ! It was harrowing at times, but I had some fun and it resulted in great stories.
Now, I make sets pretty for film and television. On the side, I am attempting to build my own empire of rental propery. Sparky Trump.

Ha, I feel like such a do-gooder :) . Thank you, guys. But I usually don't interact with the patients as much as the CNA's do, I just bring down the food. I do chat once in a while with some of the people that are totally with it (which not many of them are) though. It's my co-workers, who I absolutely hate, that make work miserable.

I love the smoking bans on bars - they passed one in my hometown (Las Cruces, NM) and it outraged people- so then they spent tons of money on a special election and it got overturned....it sucked....so there's smoking everywhere there but in restaurants...blah....
I've enjoyed the no smoking in bars here in New York - I don't come home smelling horrid and feeling like my lungs are going to collapse :D

I flip flop on this one. I think if a bar wants to allow its patrons to smoke, they should be allowed. I think if they want to prohibit it, it should be prohibited. I think that way if you do not want to go to a smoking bar you do not have to go - no one has a constitutional right to a smoke free bar  This fits in with my "get the govt. out my personal life" thing" I do have to say though, it is not horrendous to have to go outside to smoke and it does make the juke joint's atmosphere (all of it) MUCH better.
Also, I get that second hand smoke is bad and all of that, but if it is that bad for you then do not go. The problem is with the work staff - but there again, get another job
Hopefully, this post will not encite Strand hate

I agree with everything that you said. Banning smoking is p.c. thuggery. The only one I agree with is on commercial airlines because there is absolutely no escape from it with all the recycled air.
I despise smoking- it reeks and is nazzty as all hell. However, if a restaurant were to allow smoking in every corner of it's establishment I just wouldn't patronize them.

I see your point, but i kind of don't agree. Also, I like the going outside thing. everyone pops outside, there's people to chat with... Also, I like that then, more non smoking and smoking people will be in the same bars.. But also i think smoke is so dangerous, especially the level it gets to when people are drinking, that it's kind of like having tear gas/no tear gas bars to have smoking/non smoking bars. It is a bit of PC thuggery, but, just because smoking is one of 2 very dangerous legal drugs. (the other being alcohol). I mean, we don't have crack/no crack bars, or heroin/no heroin bars. Hopefully someone will be able to discern my point - I just woke up... oops, and sorry about the threadjack.

I'm a researcher and writer who works with non-profits and school districts. I write grant proposals that create afterschool programs and early childhood education programs and similar programs for low-income, or otherwise disadvantaged children. I work from home and I'm on the internet almost constantly doing research or actual writing for various projects so I log a lot of time in from of the computer. And I take "mental health" breaks to check out The Ledge (and Ebay).

(not me - I do not smoke at work - it really is just a weekend thing and not even that often) I'm wondering about this. I have a friend who smokes occasionally, only when she's writing. She says it helps her to write. How does one only smoke occasionally and never become addicted? I have never done it, so I have no clue whatsoever.

Keep in mind that it's a matter of consideration and common decency. No one should be forced to endure second-hand smoke anywhere, it's a health issue. People should have enough manners to take it outside when they're in a restaurant or a bar. We don't **** where we eat (hopefully), so we shouldn't smoke where we eat, either.

Exactly.
There's nothing worse than the smell of stale cigarettes permeating throughout the house, not even the smell of ass. I helped my downstairs neighbor move last year and her walls were so yellow that I almost puked. It was hysterical when she pulled off her hideous wall border to reveal a white wall. The contrast between the white and the urine-yellow was striking.

Exactly. THIS is a HEALTH issue. It's not about taking away the personal rights of smokers. It's about everyone having the right to frequent any business without involuntarily having their lives shortened.

Let's see...How to make a long story short. In early October of 2002, I woke up and I felt really disoriented and dizzy, started walking into walls...Over the next week or so I just got weaker and weaker, eventually having to use a wheelchair. To be honest no one is sure exactly what happened. For a while some doctors claimed it was a psychiatric problem with me, which drove me NUTS, but now the general medical consensus is: something happened, we just don't know what. I've been through, let's see, four neurologists and I'm going to see a new one in a couple weeks. Doctors are like people in every other occupation, some are good and some aren't so good, it's just that with doctors the stakes are higher when they AREN'T good. If only there were more people in the medical profession who were more open-minded like Curtis...Anyway, in a nutshell, that's what happened.
And, in case you all are wondering, I'm expected to fully recover eventually. :woohoo:

No...Thank you for the recommendation! We've suspected Chronic Fatigue, but every doctor goes red in the face and little veins pop out of their foreheads when we bring it up. Someone just asked me two days ago if I was ever tested for Epstein-Barr, and I realized that I don't know if I have been or not. Most doctors know next to nothing about it, that's why they start to sweat you bring it up. What you should do is call your insurance company and ask them to give the name of a specialist in your area, they should have a few names at least. If you do have it, though, expect to take 50 vitamins a day. And be sure to collect Social Security if you're diagnosed with it, you automatically qualify for it.

For fun: Work out, play guitar, listen to music, read, hang out with friends, head the democratic party in my county, and drink and study wines.
For work: grade papers, plan lessons, review textbooks for my county's textbook adoption committee (I'm the chairperson for my school), coach the Scholar's Bowl Team, and choreograph dance routines for our cheerleaders and the dance team.

At Work: I answer phones, set up appointments, take Xrays of the foot and ankle, clean and stock rooms, set up surgeries, contact insurance companies about coverage of surgeries and orthotics, autoclave instruments and make plaster impressions of feet for orthotics and molded shoes.
At Home: I relax and sleep when I can, when I am awake I surf the web, shop online, watch TV, listen to music, read a book ~ always have one with me no matter where I go, clean the kitchen and my bathroom ~ my bedroom is cluttered as always, go shopping, talk on the phone with a couple of friends, cook a nice meal once or twice a week, get my nails done or do them myself, when it is nice out go for walks

I would love to work in a toy store. Kids don't get on my nerves at all.
What are you going to study?
I'm taking a course in psychology, hopefully in the end I'll work with health issues.
