David

List ten rock singers whose singing voices make you wish you sounded just like that. Keep it to rock, otherwise everyone will be showing off pretentiously by listing Harve Presnell or Ileana Cotrubas. So whose singing voice would you want?

1. Peter Gabriel
2. Van Morrison
3. Brian Setzer
4. Smokey Robinson
5. Roland Orzabal
6. Eddie LeVert
7. Holly Johnson
8. Maurice White
9. Paul McCartney
10. Howard Scott

Oh George Harrison, he slipped my mind. Not hard to do in this state. But yes, his voice is superb. I hate trained voices and I despise trilling or whatever the f*ck it is. I hate hate hate those Idol type voices. They're like actors who recite lines.

I agree - but mine can sound soooo trained  so.....

I LOVE Michael Stipe. His voice is so raw and his pain is apparent.

I also LOVE James Taylor - though his range is non-existent IMO.

Finally - Axel Rose - he can just deliver with a vengence.

There are really so many though - and all mentioned are superb.

I already sound Like Stevie Nicks (true! same range and huskiness)
Janis Joplin (the female version of Axel Rose)
Judy Garland (I know she's not rock but everyone knows who she is)
Ann/Nancy Wilson from Heart (does that count as 2?)
Steve Perry (awesome set of pipes he's got!)
Freddie Mercury (same here!)
Meat Loaf
Grace Slick
and just for ****s and giggles: GENE SIMMONS!

It sounds as odd coming out of John Lennon thought Lux, so give it a go. :D

As far as I know, Amazon.com has a free MP3 download of "Doncha Go Way Mad," her duet with Elvis Costello. HOWEVER - while it is a fantastic song, it is so not representative of her and the Jazz Passengers. Their albums are the kind where you have to hear a little before buying because it's a very acquired taste. Most of it is very experimental and off-the-wall. I've seen her with them live and that is an experience. They're almost 100% improvisational live, coming up with lyrics and songs off the top of their heads.

Here's a link to the free song and some minute-long clips (and it's their best album, too):

What..!? Are you kidding me..?
David Bowie can't sing.. Listen to him, he is talking over music. Actually, I think that's been on of his "hooks" in his career..
I think he is a great songwriter and all, but as a singer...no way!

Well, people I admire for their vocal abilities:

BOTH are magnificent - each in their own way - Pat, having the technically POWERHOUSE voice and Bonnie having a voice lambent with emotion.

If I had a girl's voice, I would want Patsy Cline's voice - HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!

Then, Ann Wilson, Stevie in the 70's, Martha Davis, Natalie Merchant - any of those  But, first and foremost Patsy Cline - SHEEBUS!!!!!!!

A few years ago, PBS aired a live tribute to Broadway songs hosted by Julie Andrews and Liza, of all people, came out and did a version of Some People that was chilling. I love Ethel Merman and Bette Midler, but jeezum crow, she sang the best version of that song that I've ever heard. I know!!! I never knew she could sing like that! Homegirl can project.

It's so hard to pick a favorite song from that concert, every one is so good. Life On Mars and Sunday are right up there, though, they're phenomenal. And I have much love Heathen (The Rays) and Reality. It blows the old Ziggy Stardust film out of the water, IMO.

Liza (with a "Z" ) can BELT Gypsy. I LOVE Bernadette - but she is wrong for the part. Lupone or Liza should have had it. They have THAT voice. Interestingly, Liza's voice is not 1/2 of her mother's voice (pretty much no one will EVER have Judy's voice) - but Liza got the power behind Judy's voice - no doubt about it.

Rumor is they approached Lupone with it but she did not want to take on such an effort as her kid is getting older, etc. Also, I have to wonder if Patti's pipes could belt eight or nine shows a week - she is getting up there  I still love her though

I liked Bernadette in the role, personally, but her interpretation of it just is not suited for Broadway. In a film version, definitely, but not on Broadway. When I saw her, I thought that because she didn't have the power in her voice that is required, she acted the songs out more than all the others who have played Mama Rose (which I greatly enjoyed her doing, she did it masterfully), which made everything much more subtle and it just didn't suit it onstage.

I've always liked Liza, she's very spunky, so...

Yes, Judy Garland was unique, I must have watched a dozen times Meet Me In Saint Louis mostly to hear her sing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and she was perfect in A star is born, especially the director's cut version shows her intensity in the part.

I like a lot Liza too, a great singer, and as an actress even better than her mother, IMO. I'll never forget how she's been able to fascinate an initially quite skeptical audience at the end of the Freddy Mercury Tribute.

About Julie Andrews, I prefer her in the movies where she doesn't sing that much like Ten, S.O.B, Duet For One, That's Life!; the only exception is Victor/Victoria, but I love it especially for Robert Preston

I don't think I ever saw Liza on the Freddie tribute. Loved her in Cabaret! Have you ever heard her sister Lorna sing? Judy Garland was quoted as saying 'Lorna has more talent than the rest of us put together' (I think Lorna was about 12 at the time)

Yep - Lorna is fab. But, she never had Liza's presence - then again very very few (maybe 10 in my lifetime) ever have. As to who has the better voice, I'd prob. say Lorna, but Liza can sell it better.

In any event, they are both remakably talented people who deserve their own kudos - but the comparison of the two is always gonna be there - which is a little sad I guess.

I would recommend the latest, Be Here and Golden Road.

Seeing him live is a MUST. He's on fire and has a blast. He'll be in Australia next month, then he's coming back round here to Houston in March and they may be adding more dates for this summer everywhere. I highly recommend everyone to go see him.
