Freaky.

If you move to the west coast, there are earthquakes. The east coast has hurricanes. Central US has tornadoes. There is no getting away from Mother Nature, and to me, that is scary.

Yeah. Here in the peruvian coast weather is good. No hurricanes, no electric or snowy storms, no tornados, no floods.

But we have earthquakes. Big ones. So tsunamis are a possibility.

I think i'm pretty safe from natural disasters here in Ireland, which is a nice feeling.
It's awful to see other countries so prone to earthquakes and hurricanes etc. though. :distress:

Snow :)

Supposedly, Buffalo is on a major fault line (I've heard) so I suppose a quake could hit, but I doubt it. We do get the occasional tiny tornado, but nothing close to what you Midwesterners face.

I live in Tornado Alley, along with Brian and other central US Ledgies. :( The tornado of March 2000 destroyed a lot of buildings in downtown Fort Worth. I was at work that day, and was alone with my (bitchy) boss getting in some overtime. I'll never forget looking out the window to see the sky changing from blue to green to red...reddish orange, purple...to black. It was a sight and I had no idea how serious it was until I got home. I was terrified that I was gonna die with my stupid boss that night! LOL!!

Tornadoes and freakish ice storms.

The worst tornado around here that I've witnesses was in Jerrell, about 30 miles north of Austin. But the weather was still pretty nasty around here that day - I remember seeing "sideways rain" and driving home, looking at the ominous sky in my rear view mirror. Entire homes were ripped from their foundations, it was pretty bad.

As far as the ice storms, northerners always call us wimps when we get them and schools and businesses shut down, etc. I grew up in the midwest and have seen my share of snow. But there is nothing you can do when the road is covered in inches of slick ice. The inexperienced road workers here thought dumping sand on bridges and overpasses would help. Before the sleet came down. But all the sand did was blow away, since it had nothing to stick to.

Blizzards, severe thunderstorms, hurricanes. Also, we've had tornadoes but thankfully not right here--the next town over and the town I work in has had them.

Ice storms are worse than snow, IMO. And it's not that you guys are wimps...you're just so unprepared for them because it's not as though it happens there all the time so when it does everyone is like, AHHHHHHH!!!!! People up here are over-prepared. When a meteorologist pridicts snow, the entire state runs to the market to buy milk, bread, etc. What's funny? I'd bet a lot of those people don't even use milk  (it's true!)

We get tornados, small earthquakes (but I never feel them), and we've had some pretty bad snowstorms in the past. I think that's pretty much it.

yup. We had some tornados hit this year real close, and last year or the year before we had some bad one's.

Vocanoes (Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens) and earthquakes, I work with two people whose homes were destroyed by the 6.8 earthquake here in 2001. We're still waiting for the "big one".

at first I laffed, then I looked at that statement seriously...I cant even begin to comprehend what life must be like in Israel. I personally think the Gaza settlers should stay but apparently Sharon is willing to give up land to Palestinians and pay the settlers (I hope he DOES!) to get them to leave. I find it interesting that only a handful of families agreed....and there were hints in the article I read that even that amount was only for the media, to get worldwide goodwill...
I think its a dirty rotten shame that Israel has to sacrifice ANY land. And, as you can see, I am PRO ISRAEL. ALL THE WAY. I think the Jews have suffered far too long and all they want is their ancestral God-given homeland, which the Ottoman Empire occupied for so long, the Arabs think its theirs! I realize that there are going to be people that differ and thats ok with me.

Having said that however, if the Palestinians are truly willing to accept Israel's Sovreignty and form their own state and STAY WITHIN THEIR BORDERS, and Israel is willing to sacrifice, then by Golly, more power to all of them. If it brings Peace, that is a small enough price to pay.

As for disasters in CA, of course we have earthquakes, but I think I'd take earthquakes over Tornadoes any day! At least earthquakes are spaced out...
now in Northern CA there are Dormant and Active Volcanoes (Shasta and Lassen come to mind) and there is the possibility of an eruption which may rival the first Mt. St. Helens blast (anybody know what is happening there besides a slow dome growth?) Our weather is pretty good overall, though we do have bad spells, flooding and mudslides and whatnot...still...I wouldnt live anywhere else!

I remember we had a really bad sleet storm a few years ago. I was at work and our boss let us go home early. Well, my mom came and picked me up and we were in traffic for over 2 hours and I only lived about 10 minutes away. The freeway was jam-packed because ice is just very rare. It gets pretty serious though, people don't know how to drive on it and bad wrecks happen.

I live in the area which had the largest recorded wind speed in history back on May 3,1999...The winds from the tornado that killed 43 residents of the suburbs of OKC (Bridge Creek was nearly wiped out from existance) were measured at 318 MPH, Which is beyond the scale of an F5 tornado wind speed which is 316 MPH

I've seen tornadoes throughout my life (They do not scare me since I take caution when one approaches), But the May 3,1999 was the biggest one anyone has ever seen...That tornado touchdowned 2 miles North of Deb's employer in Chickasha and stayed in contact with the ground for 2 hours (It traveled about 60 miles on the ground). Many of those killed died because the winds were so strong, that unless you were several feet under ground in a storm shelter, You were in harm's way (It removed large structures from their foundations and all that remained were the concrete slabs.)

The saddest death on May 3,'99 was a Mother who was protecting her 12 year old son when the tornado passed overhead as they huddled with strangers under an overpass on I-44 and the wind started to suck both of them in, So she let go of her son to save his life even though it meant ending her's...Had she not let go they both would have died.

In my region, insidious dangers exist in the form of organizations that use disasters like the Sumatran tsunami to prey on gullible governments & individuals. The "tsunami warnings" two days ago sent to the government of India were deliberately false, originating from kook sources.

Times of India story (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-976580,curpg-2.cms)

"But junior minister for science & technology Kapil Sibal said he had 'simply forwarded' a message from a U.S.-based company to the Home Ministry mentioning the possibility of a quake of up to 7.5 on the Richter scale off Indonesia."

The "warning" apparently originated from a private organization called Terra Research masquerading as a legitimate emergency management agency. You can assess Terra Research from their Web offerings:

Terra Research (http://www.terraresearch.net/articles/GodsFirmament_article.htm)

The sinister side to all this of course is that tsunami danger from quakes two days ago never existed, which means that time & limited resources for relief work was totally wasted & that those poor, dazed people were panicked unnecessarily.

If I were king, the four assholes who man the desks at Terra Research would be facing criminal charges right about now. But ... alas ... I'm not king!

No, I'd say you have the worst natural disaster. Why don't you move Tommer. You obviously don't have any religious ties to Isreal. That's the only reason that I would imagine would keep someone in Israel.

Of course here in Japan we also get typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, landslides, volcanos .... we've got it all!! I actually chose the place I am based largely on it being a very safe area. I feel lucky that in all the world I am in one of the safest places possible. Even Australia isn't so safe these days...

thanks, but you are WAY over your head here, supporting israel doesn't nescessarily mean you have to support its mad factors. a vast portion of palestinians still live under israeli occupation, this land is theirs and not ours, those crazy settlers who live there must (and will) be evacuated, the sooner the better. if it was up to me, all they will be getting on their way back would be a nice kick in the butt and not even a single penny, they do not deserve any compensation for being messianic imperialists, the fact that jews indeed suffered too much throughout history, should have taught them to try and not inflict suffering on others, a lesson they obviously missed.

dude, first of all you don't have to be religious in order to be jewish, other than that, almost all my family and friends live here, the only language i can use freely is hebrew, and my cultural base is right here. in fact as long as my grandma's alive i can quite easily get a european citizenship, but i don't. it may surprise you, but other than the ongoing tension, this country is kinda cool, and offers excellent quality of living in almost any other aspect.

Well this thread contains some of the more racists statements I've seen the board let slide. So if I called Jews a hazard to humanity would you chuckle and act chummy with me?

like madonna sang: "you only see waht your eyes wants to see".
i was referring to myself, i am not humanity as a whole.
i'd easily agree with you if you'd like to claim the more correct opposite to mine, which would be something like "jews are a hazard to palestinians" which i'd have to agree.

Floods. Though my hometown is above sealevel, actually. In 1995 or 96 there was a danger of rivers flooding in the middle part of the country. Town where my mum lives was just on the right side of the river, all the villages on the other side had to be evacuated. Was a cool sight though, to stand on the town walls and see the water coming so close.
That's these town walls I'm sitting on (umm, frowning against the wind, I don't really look like that, lol):

On the right side of the wall where you can see the road, it was all water.

the fact that jews indeed suffered too much throughout history, should have taught them to try and not inflict suffering on others, a lesson they obviously missed.
Point taken.
Im still an Israeli sympathizer, but Im NOT advocating terrorism by ANY group, Israeli, Palestinian OR Irish. My position is that the Jewish claim to Israel is far older than the Ottoman-Empire occupation period for the Arabs. As for Gaza, it was my understanding that that territory was won by Israel in the 6 days war. Had the Arabs been successful in their sneak attack on Israel (instead of the other way around) I can guarantee you that they would not give ONE INCH to Jews in the name of Peace as Israel is now considering. Being an Israeli sypmathizer doesnt make me a racist (sorry Lux) and, in case anyone missed it, I did say that whatever solution would bring about Peace in the area, I am all for it. I just believe in my heart that the Arab nation will NEVER agree to Peace with Israel, and will never stop trying to reclaim that area for themselves. I hope with all my heart I am wrong and that one day the Arabs and Jews can live in Peace.

ps: Lux, I fail to see how you attribute "a radical position such as "Kill! Strip them of everything!" to me. I never said anything of the sort. Apparently you have either a short attention span and only read every other word, or you indulge in imaginative flights of fancy whereby you fabricate other people's points of view. But then, I keep forgetting you appointed yourself the morality police of this thread, and never tire of reminding the rest of us whats important. All this and eternally optimistic too~ (sarcasm intended)

Snow and earthquakes.

At the moment, most of Massachusetts is settled on a major fault line, especially Western Mass, and we've gotten more frequent earthquakes in the past few years. They say that it could get considerably worse as the years wear on. Doesn't exactly help that we're the Bay State.

I recently read a commentary (cant remember where) that said that the takeover of the South by the Republican Party has virtually sealed up the fate of the Nation politically, by absorbing the areas the DixieCrats once held...coupled with the States in the Bible Belt, there seems to be no stopping this phenomenon...

It won't be. I think that people will finally see through Bush and the party and all of their lies by the end of his term if not sooner. I'm just being optimistic. Also, he's just so terrible that he is bound to f*** up so badly that people will have to pay attention. Who would be their candidate in '08? Hopefully the democrats will deliver their message better this time. And no wussing out! At least now there is Air America and other outlets for people to listen to other than conservative opinions. Anyway, don't believe it Hill, we're not going to lose any more ground to the fearmongerers.

It was just something I read, and when I looked at the red/blue state map this past election, I was surprised (astounded more like) at how many RED states there are! And then I read that the exodus of the Democratic base from the South (the Dixiecrats) over to the Repug party got me worried...This happened in the Reagan days, a lot of Southerners are desperate (apparently) to preserve the priviledged status of "propertied/white/male" and its spread to other parts of the nation
But: in 08, just as the Republican Party will have to cast about for a candidate, so too will the Democratic Party. And who will we put forward? I wish we could clone Clinton....Too bad Hilary has so many people who hate her, I think she'd be awesome in the White House :blob2:

It's because of the fearmongering white house. These people are clinging to old beliefs because they are terrified of the future. The unknown, dangerous future the white house has invented for them. Yes, it is very scary!
