View Full Version : Please pray for snow!!!

There is an actual chance that Southeast Texas may have a white Christmas! With the Arctic front moving south this week, the weather folks are predicting "snow showers" for the Houston area on Friday into Saturday.

I've NEVER had a white Christmas, even when I lived in east Tennessee when I was young. I'd really like to see one. So, if you have a spare moment, please pray, do a snow dance, stick a pin in a weather voodoo doll -- however you can help.

Even if it's an inch of snow -- that's enough to pump up the ole innertubes and sled down our local seawall!!! (Besides, it's hilarious around here when we get even mildly icy conditions. People down here don't even know what snow tires are. Plus, we desperately need a good freeze to kill off the mOtHeRf*CkInG mosquitoes.)

LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW!!!!!

They've had us for a wintry mix on Christmas Eve for a week now. It was so warm today I could have washed the dog in my swimsuit. I'd love to have my first white Christmas, but I'm worried that it might turn into an ice storm. Perfect time to have one, I guess, but we're anything but prepared for one...

It's crazy that us Southerners are excited about snow, but we are! :blob1: They are saying flurries tomorrow and Thursday. Looks to be sunny, but very cold on Christmas though in North Texas. :( Bah, humbug!! LOL

Thanks, everyone for your thoughts! However, they just changed our forecast for Friday and took out almost all chances of precipitation. It's just gonna be cold and damp and muddy from all the rain we've had this week (which means I'll be stuck in the house all day with toy-crazed 4-10 year olds  ).

I did meditate for those of you who DIDN'T want snow. However, it looks like Indiana and WV (and the rest) are still gonna get blasted.

God hates me. :D Maybe in my next lifetime I'll have more pull.

I know what you mean. It's like that here even if snow is remotely in the forecast. Forget buying bread or milk. The shelves are completely empty! It's like people think they're gonna be snowed in for WEEKS instead of one friggin day, and God forbid you be without those essential items. I say stock up on beer/wine, chips/dip, and chocolate chip cookies and ride out the huge blizzard (that consists of 1-2 inches at the most!).

Just drive by a Walmart and take a look at the parking lot if you're ever in the south during a snow forecast. It'll crack you up! :p

I'm still crossing my fingers but I don't think we're going to get any of the white stuff. :distress: I see green on the radar over Lake Charles and Lafayette and it's been below freezing all day, so maybe there's a chance...

We didn't drain the pool this year and to keep the sand filter from freezing we run it when it gets below freezing -- it's been running for over two days straight now. I just hope it doesn't stop working. Anybody wanna go swimming?

My pool's winter cover is held in place with sandbags. Yesterday, the weight of all this 18" of snow we got, pulled the cover in, along with 12-14 60lb sandbags, in the deep end, of course. I have NO idea what to do.........I guess I'll just have to wait until late spring to fish it all out. I can think of no other way to get them out, other than waiting til it's almost warm enough to start swimming, get in and freeze my ass off, and carry them to the shallow end.
It's -7 right now, with 18" on the ground....it's a winter wonderland. :distress:

Oh my goodness, I feel for you. Is it an inground pool? Having to move a dozen 60 lb sandbags to the shallow end would be enough to make me drain it, haul them out, and refill it... if it's inground I don't think it would be that hard, but with an above ground there's a chance the walls could collapse (that happened to us last year when we put a new liner in -- not a good time). Normally we drain the water down to just below the skimmer and then we unhook the plumbing and bring the pump and the sand filter inside so they don't freeze and crack, but in the past few years we've just kept it running when it's cold. I hope your plumbing's okay with the kind of temperatures you guys are having...

Yeah, it's an inground. I lower the water down past the return jets, which is supposed to keep any damage from freezing to the walls. But, it's now -11  , and, with no cover on there, well, my finger's are certainly crossed.
I think the plumbing should be okay. I blow out all the lines, and fill them with RV antifreeze. Now, I'm starting to worry more....

My aunt lives east of Columbus, out towards Greensburg. She said they had drifts 4-5 feet high.
I got somewhere between 16-18 inches. I drive 4wd, and still couldn't get out of my driveway yesterday, thanks to the snowplows clearing the road into my driveway  . It was so high that it was lifting my front tires off the driveway, so I was stuck until I shoveled a 3 foot wall down.

I grew up in east Tennessee, and we'd get snow every winter. Not too much -- just enough to enjoy it without getting sick of it. Maybe 7-10 really good "snow days", and then lots of flurries and icicles the rest of the time.

When I woke up Christmas morn, we ended up with 3-4 inches on the ground, the first time that's happened in the Houston area since 1895. I've never seen so many snowmen in my life (even in Tennessee). Every house we passed on the way to my family gathering at my brother's house had a snowman, and kids either building another one, or pelting each other with snowballs. :D

Thanks again, Ledgies for helping me have a White Christmas! Here are some more pics:

Yeah....about that.

I flew into Buffalo last night at oh - around 10:45....about an hour and a half later I was on the road back to Rochester....the baggage claim took a while - but what really screwed me...? The snow.

Luckily I bought a snow brush two weeks ago - so I spent a really long time brushing off my damn car....then using the scraper feature - then trying to use it as a makeshift shovel to get my car out of the parkign spot....I'd left my car in Long term parking at the airport...

The drive home? Oh. My. God. It sucked....there were all sorts of cars in weird positions on the side of the road...luckily I made it home in one piece and with no accidents or loss of control of my car.....

and it's only the beginning....*sigh*

On a side note - it did snow in New Mexico the day before Christmas Eve...haha..just what I wanted back home...

I'm so glad you made it through the drive safely! We got slammed in Boston too, I was indoors during most of it snuggled up with my kitty. But there's like 10 inches out there and that makes the city one heck of a mess! It is pretty, but I forgot my camera.

The wind was crazy and making the windows rattle. We get this fierce wind over the water and it was so strong last nite, my cat was like, what the? It was nice to be home though all snuggled up, I was grateful for that.

Pattie, I hope your commute wasn't too bad this morning! I walked in and most of the sidewalks were cleaned off but some weren't so it was a bit treacherous. But nothing like driving, I used to have a 35 mile commute which I do not miss! I feel for those of you who commute.

Yeah, sometimes even though the weather has cleared, the roads still suck. Cheer up Deana - it's supposed to be warm enough to rain by New Year's! :)

Oh goody! haha - I hear that rain mixed with all this snow is just an extra special treat to all ;) I am enjoying my first winter so far though - I won't be driving between here and Buffalo much - so driving isn't too big a deal most of the time (I live really near work)....it's the shoveling and brushing off of the car that I'm not so pro on...

AH!!! Poor Bloomington... seems like you all always gets the bad weather. I didn't have **** this morning. But it's snowing now, and now their talking up to 15 inches! :blob2: I'm in Brownsburg, in Hendricks County, and the further I went southeast this morning to work, the worse it was. I was doing 30 mph. on 70.... I was not a happy driver...
IMO, Kokomo and Marion always get the bad stuff. Tornados, huge storms, you name it.

Whenever my part (Marion *county*) gets warnings for stuff, we never get em unless it's just a storm or snow.

I hate this state. -_-

I'm glad you're coping. Snow scares the sh** outta me. I remember sometimes when we got it, my dad's car sliding around....AAAAHHHHHH, WE'RE GONNA DIEEEEEE!!!!!!!! Everything in my hometown is on a steep hill and a windey (wine-dee) narrow road, though...

I LOVE driving in this crap, as LONG as there aren't too many other people out.
4wd is the only way to go....

I'm from the South. We don't do ice/snow or any variation thereof. And despite the presence of snow and ice, every joker down here drives like they're rounding the final turn at a NASCAR Speedway. I try to stay off the road when winter weather hits, not because I can't drive in the stuff (I actually do very well in it) but because 99.9% of my fellow South Carolina residents can't!

You're right about the warnings. We always miss 'em. Except those tornados that hit us this year and in Morgan County. It does seem like north state does get it bad, including Lafayette. But for some reason, it seems like the southern portion gets it too, as far as snow goes.

It's snowing today in the Netherlands, couple days late but I love the sight of it anyway :)
