Anyone else experiencing some major holiday blues? I don't know what my problem is, it's not even like previous years where i just don't get into the spirit of Christmas. It could be that I graduate college next semester, and I'm scared to death. But the season just has me very down right now. I feel like anything could just make me burst into tears, and it takes A LOT to make me cry (as my nickname in the family is Stone Cold because I rarely show any emotion). I just wanted to see if I'm alone here, or if anyone else feels the same way. Just doesn't feel like Christmas at all...

for shopping yesterday for a disadvantaged child (See the thread I started called "I must be getting soft...") I have been in a kinda typical December mood (If it can go wrong in our family it always seems to happen in the month of December), Which means I cannot wait til the holidays are passed.
It never feels like Christmas to me now, I guess I felt it differently when I was younger...So yer not alone.

I'm sorry to hear that. Make sure you get at least 1/2-1 hour outside in the sunlight every day, you may have a touch of S.A.D, a lot of people get it during these short days. It's quite an accomplishment to graduate college, and it's great to be young, so i hope your feelings start looking up. :xoxo: :o

Well, since I lost my hubby, Christmas just sucks. I try my best to get into the spirit for my lil one, but it's just hard. It sucks to be alone right now, considering what I had just a couple of years ago. So, no, honey, you're not alone. Just suck it up and make the best of it. It will pass...

It's not just you. I'm usually a little depressed from Thanksgiving- New Years. This year, I haven't put up any decorations at all.... which is unusual.
I've known several people who've kinda freaked out upon graduating college. One very close friend committed suicide about 6 years ago, weeks before graduating. I was devastated. I think- in reality- that people see graduation as an end to their.....innocense?
It's the last stop on the bus route of childhood, and, of course, that's scary.
Take it a day at a time,

I am sorry that you are not doing well during the holiday season. I felt like that a month ago. I was feeling sorry for myself like I always do this time of year becuase I don't have a special man in my life. I would see people around me getting Xmas stuff for their kids and I would feel very depressed.
Then of course I just started thinking that it is not about me.
I just started to do a bit of shopping for a few friends and My Dad and then I felt a bit better. You don't even have to get extravagant gifts just a little something to make someone’s holiday a bit brighter.
Like Brian J mentioned. The Salvation Army and Toys for Tots are really good organizations that need donations this time of year. Even donating canned goods at a food bank in your area would help someone that might not even get to eat on the holiday. There might be organizations that help Veterans in your area also. Helping less fortunate people this time of year makes you feel better. You don't even have to give a lot.
As for college, I think that it is great you are graduating soon. You have your whole life ahead of you. Don't be scared. Everyone has those feelings and it is normal. You will go on to bigger and better things. :)

My whole family's been a little down this season because we just lost my Grandfather, and though I wasn't close to him I know it's going to be hard on my Mom especially. So I can relate to the depression. It's been difficult to get into the Christmas spirit and all, but I'm thinking that the closer it gets to Christmas day, the more likely we'll all be to find a way to enjoy it in our way, even if it isn't as wonderful as all those Christmases when we were kids and everything was far simpler. I think being with my family is going to make that happen, and I hope the same happens for you.
As for graduating college, I have an inkling of what you're going through because I've got two more semesters of undergraduate school and though I know where I'm going to grad. school and all, it's still a new experience and an unknown, and I tend to be afraid of both of those. But I console myself by thinking it's something newer and better than what I knew before, and that has proven to be true in my life. It has always helped me to keep the mindset that where I'm going is better than where I've been. :)

Yeppers I get a little depressed this time of year but it’s my own fault and I don’t dwell on it. My immediate family has plans that don’t include me so screw them. I’m single and don’t drink so the party scene gets old. I’m probably going to take a thermos of coffee and head to the mountains this year. :D There are some nice overlooks up there. I’d go to a singles event but can do without the mind games. If I feel like getting some action I’ll pop into a bar around midnight and pick up some wild thing. There are too many things I want to do and wallowing in pity isn’t on the list. I might make a couple model hot air balloons and launch a few from the mountain. Kids will think its Santa. Weee……

that sounds great. I always want to go camping, but have no car and no one to go with. :p so i have to see my dumb ol parents...
I just want to point out again to sorcerer, if you're not usually depressed, and you don't have much to be depressed about, MAKE SURE YOU GET SUNLIGHT EACH DAY. :wavey:

You're not the only one...I was super down about a week ago - and there is no damn SUN in Rochester...It's hard coming from New MExico where it's sunny what- like 360 days of the year...so I think I was definitely having some S.A.D. issues....
I'm back in New Mexico right now for Christmas and the sun is shining and it's great - I've missed the sun and seeing the stars....
I'm totally in the boat of being depressed but not having any reason to be....so I know it's S.A.D - and being away from home etc.....

It's not just you. The days are too short, like Amber said. I have a hard time from about Thanksgiving into the New Year. I'm happy to say that it's hit pretty late this year, just the past couple of days or so. I've had the decorations up since Thanksgiving. I also take SamE, which seems to help the depression in general.
Hang in there. It helps to know you're not alone. As my mother used to say, this too shall pass.

To me, all of the days sort of fade into one another. I don't know if that's me getting older or just realizing that hey, this is the real world...it's not peaches and cream 24/7. The weather here has been less than winter-esque with the exception of today's minor sleet/rain storm that is supposed to continue through the night I believe. This is the first year where I've not been in school full time and it's really difficult for me to just be my own age--I work from 10 in the morning until 8 at night--I don't see the light of day so yes, I hear you. Chin up though--let's hope the new year brings us all a little peace of mind and good things

Yeah...that's how i feel. More than depressed this winter, i feel a sense of pointlessness and extreme ennui. :p It's also been strangely sunny here.

It's not all that uncommon to feel depressed during these holidays-the holiday depresses me because I don't have my immediate family any more and although my cousins have me over it's not the same.
I also hate the short days and the cold.
The 21rst will soon be here and after that the days get longer...

I really want to thank everyone for their replies. It just makes me feel good to get so many replies, even though they're not exactly on the best of topics. I think the thing that's bumming me out is, looking back at the past year or two, I've lost a lot of people in my life. Not lost like died...they're just gone. Even the people who I barely knew...for example, this semester I met a couple of great people at school. Of course, I had at least one class with each of them because I don't live on campus and that's the only way I meet people. Well, I was standing outside with two of them after our last class, and one of them had to leave. So, I said, "See ya later," then turned to the girl I was with and said, "Actually, no, we probably won't see him again." My assistant manager, the one who promoted me at work and whom I have become kind of close to, has put in her two weeks notice. Plus, I lost a lot of other friends. The strange thing is I've never been nearly this needy in my life. I've always been kind of a loner and have liked it that way.
I feel silly by knowing that a lot of people have it so much worse than I do. I am especially sorry for sara1998. While a couple of little pieces of my life have faded, your whole life has been skewed. I feel so bad for you.
Thank you everyone for the graduation wishes. Law school was always in my future, and now it's in limbo. So, I'm just nervous about what I am going to do if I don't go to law school. A communications degree really isn't worth that much these days, or so it seems to me. But, I want to thank everyone one more time. I'll try to get my chin up and stop this self-pitying nonsense.

The lot that came up with these holidays were obviously masochists. Why else would they give us Thanksgiving and New Years, only to sandwich Christmas right in the middle? Bastards.

Because everything is so commercialized. Gifts are to be expected now, no one appreciates the spirit of giving anymore, it's all about receiving. :distress:

Yeah, that's a huge part of it. And I'm Jewish and Hanukkah's already over. My family is also so lax about doing things on time, so I haven't gotten all my Hanukkah gifts yet, except $50 from my Aunt Loretta.
Kyle, from South Park, can relate - "I'm a Jew, a lonely Jew, at Chriiiiistmaaaaas." There's still holiday spirit to be had in both Xmas and Hanukkah, but this year? Meh.

At least it sounds like your family gets along. Right now, everyone is avoiding one another. It sucks. Each year we have this big Christmas Eve dinner at my grandmothers and I'm not even going...too much BS for me to deal with.
Other than that, something about this year just doesn't feel right...like it all came too soon or something

This is how I feel too, just going through the motions. Although, at times I have found some Christmas spirit. But it is worse now since I broke up with my BF on Friday. Also, my family is insane, my father's side particularly, and that party is Christmas Eve. Everyone talks REALLY FREAKING LOUD and they are all so critical, the little kids are such brats too, gimme gimme gimme! Oh it makes me want to smash something! I'm thinking about making some fab martinis to dull the pain.
Yesterday's family party was quite nice though. For some reason people seemed to expect Sean to come but of course we broke up so I had to tell everyone that (he wouldn't have gone anyway). I'm oddly relieved about it. But numb!!!
So, anyway, bah humbug, I hate f*cking Christmas! Not really but the icky parts above are what I hate.
Diss, for me Christmas is about giving, I don't expect much and I do get more joy from giving than receiving at this point in my life. Except to my grandmother who I can NEVER please.
Dude, I could talk for days on this one, so I'll stop now....

There are a couple of different places. I think I hear him right after Lindsey's intro to Red Rover. At one point I'm pretty sure he yells "What's up Stevie?" :woohoo:
I SO hear him
You guys in the parking lot would have been a kodak moment. That was like me, Nancy, Meredith and little Katie on my lap in the middle of Atlanta trying to get to down Peachtree in the middle of cruise traffic after the concert to find her friends car  Little Minnesota Katie waving to them as beer bottles are flying around and people are going ape**** next to us as we're stuck with nowhere to go... Ahh...what a year it's been

OMG. The email addy is priceless. I've got WMA on random so I'll have to search for it real quick. I love the tone of her voice when she says it to him. It's too funny.
 I just listened to it...she is priceless and it comes out incredibly lounge-lady-esque. Thank you for sending!!

I just listened to Sara and that's you, Jason, screaming "What's up, Stevie!" and then "Hey, hey!"? LMAO!!! Hilarious!! Someone goes "Look at her boots, boots!"
Not sure where you are in Red Rover...someone help me out. The one where he talks about "gods looking down on this experiment....and wondering if it might be time to pull the plug...dark thought, but a tender song, nonetheless" and someone yells "I love this song!" and his guitar was outta tune.
I can send ya Red Rover...and Sara, if ya want.

By the By - this is IMO BY FAR the best Sara of this last tour. Maybe because I was there and my jaw was dropped to the floor for most of it - but I saw a few others and this one was HUGE. I also have to say her twirls at the very last on in Detroit were incredible - but vocally it was Madison!!!!!!!

I feel silly by knowing that a lot of people have it so much worse than I do. I am especially sorry for sara1998. While a couple of little pieces of my life have faded, your whole life has been skewed. I feel so bad for you.
Awww... bless your heart. Don't feel silly about how ya feel. I have to also realize that there are people who have it far worse then I do. It took a long time to figure it out. I hope it all starts looking up for you soon! :xoxo:

Everyone talks REALLY FREAKING LOUD and they are all so critical, the little kids are such brats too, gimme gimme gimme! Oh it makes me want to smash something! I'm thinking about making some fab martinis to dull the pain.
You just summed most of my Christmas experiences. And lately, it seems like I drink a little more each year!
I look foward to seeing friends and family and having some time off from school, but come January 2nd it'll be back to the same old stresses and responsiblities, ugh. I guess I get more depressed after the holidays than during them.

Yeah, me too, cuz you expend all that energy and eat all the crap and then it is just over. Maybe I'll take a vaca then. Or at least dream about one. I'll be thinking of you when I'm at my helliday, uh, holiday party with the fam.

to go to my Mother's on Saturday...Which is a cool thing, But I am coming down with a bad case of (Chronic) bronchitis, So I currently feel like ****, But I am enjoying the Pantera discs I just received from gldstwmn (Thanks Chris!) and some of the newer circulating FM 2004 shows (ie-July 13,2004-Sioux City, IA) even though I can barely breathe.

takes me a week or so to recover from this ****, Which is chronic, So I know how to handle it...Mainly lots of liquids (I love soup) and staying immobile helps, But thr drive on Saturday morning will be murder.
I could also purchase a quart of Jack Daniels and wipe it out, Which usually helps me to get over this crap...But the hangover afterwards is just as bad as the bronchitis

Feel better, Brian! Sucks to be sick this time of year. A few people I know swear by sleeping it off, just sleep for like 16 hrs or whatever. Take it easy.

wow, it's hard to believe that alcohol would help. I'm a bit sick right now (congestion, cough, runny, runny, runny nose) because of alcohol. okay, and chain smoking, too, but still. But, sounds like you do know what will help... :D I wonder why you get that all the time? Anyway...too bad you can't sleep during the drive.

for 16 hours???...I just wished I could just sleep for 8 hours a night, If I slept for 16 hours someone would be tempted to call the local funeral home and let 'em know some new business is on the way

Thank You!! I went to the mall for her today, and almost turned around to go home and get my camera, so I wouldn't have to pay their awful prices. But, I decided better of it, and thank God I did, becuase when we got in line, there was a sign saying if you take pictures (with your own camera), that they are going to make you have one taken by them and buy at least one photo from them. Isn't that bull****?

My consumer sense says yes, it is, but business-wise you gotta realize that Santa in the mall has just become another huge commercial event. Santa's a very busy guy *wink* and needs to be paid somehow.
Sara, I also thank you for your earlier post. I am feeling better these days. I guess I just got in a bad slump. Have a good Christmas all (those who celebrate it), and let's all hope for a great 2005!
