I have only just bought TITN and knowing its reputation as a stinker, I went straight to When I See You Again, I LOVE IT! What is wrong with it, if you love this song, come out and support me please! (I think I will need it :P)

Thank you, to me it is quite balaldic and nice and soft, I don't see it as a weak point at all, I was reluctant to get Tango because I have heard it bashed to bits before, but I can honestly say there isn't a song here I don't like that, in fact I can't think of Fleetwood Mac song I don't like.

Sorry, I don't particularly care for it......though I do like Liddy at the end.

There's been some pretty lengthy threads discussing this song, though.

You got it.
I love WISYA.
Always have.
I know people go insane over the what's the matter babies but each one is different and I think that was absolutely done on purpose. Stevie was very vulnerable at that time in her life and having someone care (even though the relationship in the song was clearly coming to some kind of end) and show concern in some way was something she could hang on to. She knew she would emerge from this as a changed person and wondered where the relationship would be in the future.
And when Lindsey comes in at the end, it just tears my heart out. I don't care if it was set up for maximum soap-opera-esque appeal.
It's a beautiful song and probably in my Stevie top 15 list.

I was expecting some snoozer, puker of a song but instead I got what I think is up there with hmm...I'd say top 20 not fifteen, I just don't understand the hate.

I like it. I think the line "and the dream says . . . " is pretty - I also LOVE how LB sings on it as well. She does, however, say "baby" too much for my taste.

It's definitely one of my all-time favorite Stevie songs. Perhaps one of my all-time favorite songs, period.
I think it's achingly beautiful... so candid and haunting. I've been listening to that song since 1987, and it's never failed to move me.

It's not everyone's taste, and never will be... but I wouldn't change a single second of it. (I once made an edit of it, for those who feel it's a little heavy on the "what's the matter, baby" lines... but if I listen to that edit, I miss the ones I excised!)

Anyway, I'm a "WISYA" lover, and damn proud of it. :D

Diss might prefer the hundred page option though hehe,
is it still in the archives, will I be able to find it? Nah seriously, I am just interested to see what people have against it, I actually really love Stevie and Lyndsey's voice in this song, it's a very tender, affectionate and intimate song to me.

I don't necessarily hate the song, just ALL those Wassamatta's..... As I posted recently, I love the part where Lindsey comes in! I think THAT is one of his greatest vocal parts in any song(it has "longing", IMO).
Surely, Bob Dylan could've come up with something less repetitive than all the Wassamatta's. :sorry:

And surely Christine could have come up with something better than all of Sugar Daddy. :p

Anyway, I happen to love When I See You Again. And I agree with you Homer about Lindsey's part - I get chills everytime.

I think the verses are incredible and express a deep regret/longing/sadness that I can really relate to. The soft guitar really does it for me too.

It's miles better than quite a few songs on Tango. At least, in this guy's opinion.

LOVE IT.

I'm telling ya. There are very few songs I dislike....Empire State, Lizard People, and These Strange Times.....everything else I love. This is the one bad I can honestly say I love all their work. That's the reason I am on this board....their music is fantastic to me. I'm not a casual listener. Sure, I bash songs here and there, but it doesn't mean I don't like it. Some songs are more perfection than others. WISYA is in that category. Could it be better? Sure. Is it so bad I want to rip my eardrums out? No. I love the song for what it is. It's one of my favorites on Tango. It's not one of my Top 10 FM songs, but it does it job for me. :o

:wavey: I love this song, too.

The second verse and the bridge are really, really good. Perhaps this song wouldn't be so derided if the condition of her voice was better. Some say the thrashed nature of her vocal cords adds to the overall vulnerability of this song, however, I think it just makes the endless "whassamattas" more grating.

I can really relate to Stevie's overall longing in this song, though. What I wouldn't give for someone to say "What's the matter, baby?" to me and truly mean it and follow through on the resolve.

Ok I think what drives ppl nuts is the texture of her voice and the "baby's". Otherwise, it a pretty good song. LB handles his vocal magnificantly on this song. The guitar is haunting too.

There are many Stevie songs that are great songs, but she's just not in good vocal form. I really like Stevie as a composer (more than Chris and LB sometimes) but as a singer she can get on your nerves. Especially if you are a straight tone singer.

but then again Stevie Nicks has made maybe a few more dollars than I have as a singer. ok maybe a billion more.

She sounds like a chipmunk sucking on balloons. Everything about it sucks, IMO. Her voice, the lyrics (how uninspired and BAD), the maudlin feel to the music, I DON'T EVEN LIKE LINDSEY ON IT. He sounds strained and uninterested. Love his "if I see you again," though.

Now about this "Sara" stuff. I like it live, but it's one of those songs that I never get as excited about when it's live, like "Little Lies" and "Hold Me." Uh, except those are for a different reason entirely--the harmonies are never what I want them to be when they're live. I think the vocals are just perfect in the studio version of "Sara", so it's like the live versions can never be good enough for me. I especially don't like the most recent live versions as much as the studio version. But now I've got a "Sara" question. Is the one on the Green Album different from the one on Tusk? (The regular version). Something sounds different to me, granted it has been awhile since I broke out the Green Album. Now that I have so many of the others it seems unnecessary. Anyway, whatever the case, "Sara" is still my favorite FM song. Period.

I may be completely off b/c I don't have either the original tusk or the green greatest hits but isn't the version of Sara included on the original Tusk CD the edited version? This was done to allow all of it to fit on one CD? The green album would have the full version. I don't know if that's what you're talking about or not. Also, I would think the track would have sounded a little better because of it being remastered for the greatest hits album if that was the case.

I didn't care for WISYA at first, I didn't even understand the sense of it. But it has certainly grown on me. Stevie's frailty is palpable, but all the "Wassamattababy" mantra stopped to get on my nerves and started to fit well for me in the mood of the song. It's not one of my favourites, but when it comes on my playlist now I enjoy listening to it. :)

So, the first CD has the edited version of "Sara." Well, by edited I mean somewhere between five or six minutes. I don't know if there's a shorter version out there. The Green Album has one that is basically the same length. Last time I listened to the one on the Green Album, I thought it sounded better than the one on disc one of the Tusk re-issue. The edited version is 4 minutes. I've never actually heard it because the longer Sara is for me the better. I guess what you'd call the "normal" version is 6 something and that's on both the Green Album and the re-issue as well as the original vinyl. I have the version from the green album downloaded. It was my first exposure to the band (I was just looking for songs with my name in them) so it has a special magic I guess when I listen to it. Someone else on the board would know better but I'd imagine there's a difference in sound quality between the green Greatest Hits and the re-issue.

Just wanted to add that I, too, love "Sugar Daddy."
It's a great song... fun to listen to, fun to sing along with. It's a "smile-inducer."
In my mind, Christine really can't write a bad song. My "least favorite" of all of her tunes would be "One More Night"... but even that one isn't a song I'd ever say I "hate."

In regards to "When I See You Again," I've always felt... as I have said in the past... that the repetition of the line "what's the matter, baby" is important in conveying the feelings of longing, despondency and ennui (and that tiny, tiny glimmer of hope), that I imagine Stevie must have been feeling at that point in her life. Everytime she says that line, it takes the listener deeper into her psyche. Sometimes it's a question her former lover is asking her, sometimes it's a question she's asking herself... sometimes it's a question that she knows she has no way of ever honestly answering, and sometimes it's a touching example of concern from her past lover that she's still desperately needing to cling to.

I also feel that fragile, hoarse whisper (ah-ha! Stevie's the Hoarse Whisperer! ;) ) that she sings it with, is so in-tune with the emotionality of the song that it would not have had the same effect if she had recorded it a few years prior or a few years later.

Funny that some of the parts I love the most about it, are the most reviled parts of the whole song! Ah well.

Ok, Tynan... for you, I repeated some of why I have the utmost love for "When I See You Again." :wavey:

I like the song - sometimes more than others. I even like Welcome to the Room...Sara...sometimes. I feel they don't work well with the album though. Seven Wonders fits nicely, the other two just don't fit. Lindsey and Chris meshed so well on that album-Stevie just seemed strangely out of the loop. That is probably what I dislike most about them-they seem to be sort of road blocks in the album. It's rolling along nicely, and then clunk-there's a Stevie song that doesn't fit, thrown down like a barricade someone once said. I would say lyrically I like WISYA better than Family Man (JMO) but even there Family MAn fits the album better and flows into the big picture (the album as a whole) nicer.

It is really difficult to decribe Stevie's voice-especially in songs like that. I mean, we can all try, but would anyone who didn't know her really get a realistic sound in their heads from these decriptions? To me it sounds like if you have a head cold and you talk in your cootchie-cootchie-coo baby voice (and that sounds negative but I do like it). She phased into that voice hear and there on Rock A Little, which I beleive the People magazine review of that album said something like "Stevie sounds like a bizare mix of Edith Piaf and Elmer Fudd". Now there's a description, huh?

And since this is an appreciation thread, I will say, the line after that read, "But Nicks is too smooth a pro to allow her vocal idiosyncracies to mar the record..."

I LOVE WISYA. Always have. Esp. the Lindsey guitar work at the end..

The lyrics are haunting, especially in the context of where Stevie was at the time...just back from rehab, wondering how people were going to react to her now..

The one I don't particularly like on that album is Family Man.

I'm listening to it again, and i like it even more than i thought. I'd prefer Lindsey didn't sing, though. contrary to popular opinion. :D I mean, she coulda fit in like, five more heartbreakingly beautiful 'wassamatababies' during that time. :D

My favourite review quote on "When I See You Again" is by George Starostin:
...and 'When I See You Again' is an even lower point for the band than 'Everywhere' or 'Family Man': Nicks croaking? Lord! She sounds like a dying dog! This probably means that her voice really was starting to deteriorate, so she couldn't handle gentle, quiet vocals without giving the effect that sends the nasty kind of shivers down your back. That's the trouble with voices, you know: don't put too much in your voice, it's sure to let you down some day.
Almost reads like a compliment, methinks.

Actually, there is an alternate version out there, which has more "what's the matter, babys" for the coda, instead of Lindsey's part.

I will add some love to the "When I See You Again" pot.
Her use of the multiple "whatsuhmattababies"..IMHO..was done to convey the confusion, anxiety, fear, trepidation, loneliness, sense of abandonement, sadness...and all the other emotions Stevie was feeling at that time in her life. She wanted "someone" to ask her if she was ok, to tell her she was ok, to reassure her that it would ALL be ok, to promise her that their dream was not over and that is would work out in the end. That is the one reason I like all the repetitive usage..because she had a reason for doing it. Her vocals are not croaky, IMO, but I do see how some people might not like them. I hear alot of vulnerability in those particular vocals... that is why I like it. Lindsey's part at the end totally makes the song for me, especially considering what the song is about. His use of the word "if" does have a big impact and I wonder if he changed it intentionally or that is the way Stevie wrote it? Everytime I hear WISYA..it reminds me of that time in the band's history, the turmoil, the sadness over Lindsey quitting, just the late 80's in general.

Almost, Gaius? I think that's the best thing that can be said about the song and be true at the same time. Her voice is what makes the song intolerable. She sounds like she forgot how to sing and just moo'ed at the first mic she came into contact with.

While I completely disagree I have a most hilarious mental picture in my head right now.
