NEW YORK - Irish rockers U2, R&B singers The O'Jays and soul balladeer Percy Sledge are among five musical legends to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during the foundation's 20th annual induction ceremony next year, the organization announced Monday.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation will hold its induction ceremony March 14 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan.
U2, which became one of the planet's most popular bands in the 1980s with their megahit "The Joshua Tree," is still making the charts: Their November release, "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," is the No. 2 album according to Billboard.
The O'Jays had eight No. 1 R&B hits during the 1970s and '80s, including "Love Train" and "Use Ta Be My Girl." Sledge will forever be associated with "When a Man Loves a Woman," one of the songs that made him a figure in deep Southern Soul in the late 1960s.
The Pretenders and blues guitarist Buddy Guy will also join the organization's Class of 2005.
The artists beat out an impressive list of nominees including Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, which would have been the first rap group to be inducted; "Centerfold" singers the J. Geils Band, and the late country singer Conway Twitty.
Also, Frank Barsalona and Seymour Stein will be inducted in the non-performer category.
Barsalona is credited with creating the first legitimate rock and roll booking agency. His roster included acts like Led Zepplin, Bruce Springsteen (news) and the E Street Band and The Who.
Stein, who is chairman and co-founder of Sire Records, is noted as one of the most successful executives in the recording industry. He is known for signing artists like Madonna (news - web sites), The Ramones and The Talking Heads.
Musicians, industry professionals and journalists vote on the nominations, which were announced in September. Artists are eligible to be inducted into the Rock Hall after at least 25 years have passed since their first record was released.

The Pretenders (Not a fan but they Chrissie H. has my respect) & Buddy Guy who are deserving, the rest of the picks are quite laughable...
Man, The "Crock & Blow Hall of Shame" strikes yet again!!!
Lame asses!

What are the odds that Stevie will get in as a Solo Artist next year. It'll be her first year eligible I belive, so from now on, it's possible

No way will she get in next year. There's not a snowballs chance in hell, IMO. I think it will be a few years down the road before she is inducted as a solo artist.

J. Geils had way better songs than Centerfold.
Buddy Guy is effing incredible. Why though, are they inducting Conway Twitty? Did I miss all of his big "rock and roll" hits?

Judging from some of the people who are in or getting in, I think she's a sure inductee. I think they're just waiting to put her in. :D

And it's a crime Lynyrd Synyrd was looked over again. But heh, I'd love to watch the show one year with Stevie and LS in the same show.

They are not. He didn't make it. He will probably beat out Stevie next year, though.

Well, with all due respect, Stevie is still making music and still in the public eye - granted not as much as in the 70's and 80's as 1997-03 - but she is still there.
As for Boston - GREAT band and that is a TRAVESTY!!!!

Has Boston done anything major lately? The only reason the 'Mac was inducted was because they were big in '97. If it wasn't for the Reunion Tour hoopla, they wouldn't be members.
Stevie needs a major come back next year to be even considered. MAJOR COMEBACK.

Boston? Boston sucks. I can't imagine they'd ever be inducted. Course, they've inducted some real turkeys in the last few years, so I guess anything's possible.

And she has also been inducted as part of Fleetwood Mac. I honestly doubt that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is itching for the year that she becomes eligible as a solo artist, especially when groups like Boston haven't been inducted.

Didn't they induct Foreigner? That's another &*$?@! of a band. I guess if they're in, they've already lowered the bar considerably.

Nope. :xoxo:
They haven't inducted:
Tina Turner as a solo artist.
Heart.
Blondie.
Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Annie Lennox.
Eurythmics.
Boston.
Journey.
The list goes on. :)

Eurythmics
I can see Eurythmics, but Annie as a solo artist....nah. Her solo career has been nothing special. Besides, has she had a solo album out for 25 years? Same with Tina....has she? I dont know much about Tina's solo career prior to Private Dancer.

believe it or not but Conway Twitty, Before he became a country superstar, Was a "teeny bopper" in the 50's/60's who had "pop music" hits, So I assuming that is why he is being inducted...

Well they came out with an album (Corporate America) Which is awesome. Prolly one of their best albums. You all should check it out....
And they toured in '03 which was a pretty big tour, (Sold out Bonner Springs, KS the show I went to) and '04 (had 10,000+ people show up in Wichita to see them headline a rock festival) So I think they can and should be inducted, Its not like they have done nothing since 1978.
Yes, maybe if stevie has an album and a tour she could have a chance. CHANCE!

She had one last year "Bare" AND - in the early 90's her solo stuff like "Diva" was HUGE. But, she probably is not eligible until after 2010 for her solo stuff.

Tina released a solo album in 1975, but it was pretty much a flop. She did one or two after that (but before Private Dancer) that similarly bombed. :) Private Dancer is almost always referred to as her "solo debut."

So, young man, your careless use of pronouns indicates you were talking about Annie - not Tina. But, thanks for clearing that up :wavey:

 I take it you haven't heard Bare? I think it's quite brilliant...I love Annie, she has an INCREDIBLE voice. But, she has had only 3 solo albums so far, and of course not long enough for eligibility. However, the Eurythmics definitely need to be inducted in a few years.
Boston sucks ass and does not deserve to be inducted. Frankly, I'm amazed that Lynrd Skynrd is not in yet!

Is Phil Collins in the HOF as a solo artist? How about Genesis?
I am surprised they just don't put ABBA in, I mean they came out officially in 1974 and it's about time really....
Stevie better get in....ugh

She had one out last year and it was marvelous. ;) I think her solo albums ahve all been magnificent. ESPECIALLY Medusa. I could listen to that one all day. Her cover of Train In Vain epitomizes a perfect song, IMO.
Tina's had solo albums out since the seventies (Acid Queen and Tina Does Country). Her last one was in 2000.
