What are some of your favorite non-lyrical compositions?

Wings of the Wind - Michael W. Smith (on his debut album, it's just a fun, interesting, early 80's instrumental)

Ashton - Michael W. Smith (My fave Smitty instrumental...it's spectacular!)

Sunny Side of Heaven (Couldn't leave FM out of this..hehe. Danny rules! )

Albatross (Beautiful.)

Wish Lindsey would do more instrumentals...and a friggin soundtrack!!!!

I love the soundtrack to "The last of the Mohicans" LOVE IT!!!! that's all i can think of now, although i do like Lindsey's NGBA instrumental on the reissue, and it's amazingly...something...when heard through headphones.

perhaps my all time fav has got to be "Green onions" by Booker T and the MG's..anyone remember that one?
FM related..there's one on the Tusk re-release, thats cool, actually any of them really (I know most of them are just backing tracks before lyrics added, right?..not instrumentals as such)

This Nearly Was Mine by Lindsey Buckingham.. Very emotive version of the Rodgers/Hammerstein song.

Barbers Adagio For Strings... Again very powerful yet understated piece..

Intermezzo sinfonico from Cavalleria Rusticana.. Brilliant and moving, nothing can compare to it IMHO..

"Albatross"
"Caught In The Rain" (yes, I like it a lot)
"Stephanie"
The little snippet at the end of "Slow Dancing"

Then the non-FM ones:

The Beach Boys: "Let's Go Away For A While", "Pet Sounds"
Frank Zappa: "Aybe Sea"
King Crimson: "Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Parts 1&2), "Talking Drum", "Red", "The Sheltering Sky"... (they have a plenty)
Genesis: "After The Ordeal"
Nick Drake: "Horn"
The Pixies: "Cecilia Ann" (haven't heard the Surftones' original)
Link Wray: "Rumble" (of course)
Dick Dale: "Misirlou" (immortalized in Pulp Fiction)
Joy Division: "Incubation"
New Order: "Let's Go" (before they added vocals to it)

Uh, memory loss has struck now, it seems.

Not a huge fan of instrumentals really - because I like to sing along to things.....so none really come to mind...

Though I did like Paul McCartney's Working Classical and Standing Stones...two great instrumental albums that I love....very relaxing...

One of my favorites is the instrumental version of Paul McCartney's "Junk."

Macca has a few instrumental versions of songs that sound quite interesting (ie-"No More Lonely Nights (Instrumental Version)" )

Btw, Macca does looks nearly identical to the Fireman...I wonder why????

I doubt if this qualifies as instrumental because its all computer generated but have you seen the “Animusic” things on PBS? They’re interesting to watch. Reminds me of old pinball machines for some reason. http://www.animusic.com/downloads.html

I have the soundtrack (thank you for ordering it for me, Musicland!!) and I love it soooo much! My fave instrumental is The House Rising (makes me cry) because it's very powerful. The main character (Mrs. Brisby) is running all gamut of emotions. Her house has to be moved and the rats of NIMH are trying to move it, and her kids are trapped inside. She feels relief, then, the stone starts to sink in the mud, then panic sets in, then defeat when the stone completely sinks. She's lost hope...then, she uses the necklace that Nicodemus gave her to give her strength and courage to lift the stone up from the mud and it floats to the safe place. I've seen this cartoon so many times in my life, I can listen to the soundtrack and see the movie in my head. LOL

One of my fave movies of all time. :)

I've seen "Stephanie" mentioned a few times in this thread, but I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned "Django". It's short, but I love it. Especially the way it perfectly sets up (and bleeds into) "Races Are Run".

Also, there's a Prince instrumental that I used to loooooove. It's at the end of the "Under the Cherry Moon" soundtrack. Can't think of the name right now -- must go look it up...

Ooh, I love Oscillate Wildly, too.

My favorite instrumental is Is That Your Zebra? by Sam Phillips off Fan Dance. At least I consider it an instrumental.

My favorite FM instrumental is Sunny Side of Heaven.
