View Full Version : Thoughts on a pink shirt..

OK,
I'm just a regular heterosexual male, nothing special, boring even... The other day I decided to wear a salmon pink shirt to work and I got rather a few comments... Mostly the guys just saying it was effeminate and taking the piss.... But it made me wonder, are we so stereotyped by the clothes we wear?
Personally I have a lot of shirts in many colours and the pink one for me is just another colour.. In fact in some countries a man wearing such a colour of shirt is considered confident and self assured. So it's really odd how cultures differ..
I know I don't treat people differently if they are wearing a pair of worn jeans and an old ripped jacket or a $8000 Brioni suit, it's the manners of the person that dictate my response.. I just wondered how other people felt. Have you been treated differently, badly even, due to the clothes you wore at that time?

Well, Tusk guy at work has pink shirts in his rotation, and i think they look nice, although they do suprise me. Mainly cause i hardly ever see other guys wearing them. I like Pink, though. Ever made fun of cause of clothes and stuff? Yeah, it's called elementary, middle, jr. high, highschool   But not so much how you mean it.
Keep rocking the pink, Superfly! :wavey:

You shouldn't be judged by anything you wear, color (or colour), style, fabric, etc. It's stupid, like Amber said, it's the type of thing you'd hear in elementary/high school. Obviously, those people are insecure and probably look like sh*t in pink...they're just jealous. ;)
I've been made fun of for lots of reasons, especially when I wore NKOTB shirts or jewelry back in junior high/high school. I was also made fun of for wearing socks that said Adidas on them. Yeah, some people are stoopid. LOL

Tusk guy? Do you relate him to Fleetwood Mac or does he just look like the Elephant Man?

I'll wear it again for sure.... Ain't letting a few people narrow my clothing choices.. :) :wavey:

Or maybe it's 'cos they have to wear a blue shirt uniform and I can wear what I like within reason.. The perks of management..

Mostly the guys just saying it was effeminate and taking the piss.... How ridiculous that those guys made fun of you. Sounds like they're a little stuck in high school. High school was the last time anyone honestly ridiculed my clothes.
As for stereotyping people based on clothes, that is another story IMO. I can't remember a time since 10th grade that someone actually said something mean about something I was wearing, but people have made assumptions about me based on my clothes since I've been in college. I've had quite a few people tell me that they have a hard time believing that I'm a lesbian because my clothes are "so feminine." I haven't had anyone express that in an unkind way yet, thankfully.

I think pink looks nice on a guy. Some guys won't wear it, because they see pink as a girl color. But who ever heard of a color being girl or boy. I thought all colors were neutral. Colors are for all!!!!!!!!!! People should unite over colors, not divide! :p I say show your manliness and wear the pink with pride!!!!!!

I remember my first Betsey Johnson coat. It's one for the picture thread. It's black felt with pink wild heart prints all over it and black faux fur cuffs, collar and trim.
I had gone over to Virgin Records before my night job (I was working some concert) and these two little high school girls proceeded to follow me all over the store tittering and one of them finally blurted out "It's so ugly!" I just smiled, paid for my stuff and walked over to the theater where the music crowd flipped for it and a few of them would have like to have stolen it right off my back.
I had a lot of wild clothes from that time period including a faux leopord print coat that was much coveted by Mr. Chris Robinson of the (now defunct) Black Crowes.
I also had another Betsey Johnson dress that I used to call "June Cleaver on acid." That one got auctioned off on ebay, along with some of my more wild, expensive pieces of clothing from that time.
Did I answer the question?

Madformac, honestly, don't worry about it. As a retail professional (ok, so im only a part time manager in a retail store, but i know the drill), I can tell you that pink shirts are very "in" for guys. A lot of guys are wearing it these days. In our store, we even have pink polos, button downs, and graphic tee's in pink. So, it's very "hip" for you to wear pink. And yeah, even if it wasn't, I still wouldn't worry about it. It's good that you are confident enough to wear the style of clothing that you are comfortable in, even if others don't like it. Hell, look at Stevie...people dissed her for years on her clothes, but she didn't care. Just tell anyone who makes fun to go find something important in their lives to think about, because obviously their lives are so boring.

madformac, you are so gay! Kidding!! I love pink, it is a staple color in my wardrobe and I am wearing my salmon cashmere hoodie today, actually. :D Of course I'm a woman so it isn't an "issue".
People always make judgements based on how you look. You can't control that. If I go out in my sweats I'm completely invisible (I almost never do). but made up with nice clothes on is a different story. I'll even be treated better in stores and such if I'm dolled up. It is what it is. But I always dress for me and what I like, screw everyone else, hehe.

Monday - Blondie shirt (Debbie from the self-titled album cover) - I didn't get this dried on time, so I'm wearing my My Ruin shirt today
Tuesday - Siouxsie & the Banshees
Wednesday - Kittie shirt with blue longsleeve underneath
Thursday - Another Blondie shirt
Friday - Buckingham Nicks shirt
:D I rock. I know exactly when I'm going to wear what shirt, etc, so it's a real time-saver, especially when I wake up late and don't have much time before the bus comes.

You go for it--I love men who wear pink! It looks good on them and it shows confidence. Yesssss!!!!!!!!!
I don't think anyone has made fun of me really, but one guy who I dated right after I separated from my ex (ie., the rebound man), kept making "suggestions" as to what would be an appropriate wardrobe for me. He basically wanted me to dress like a middle-aged Jewish businesswoman. Not me at all! He was gone in fairly short order.

OK, OK.... A short review..
We arrived at the gig for about 5:30pm.. The doors opened at 6pm...
The first thing I noticed was that I felt very old. I'm 30, which is not considered exactly written off and assigned to the archives age, but of the 80% or so of the crowd (which I estimate, given the venues size at about 15,000) were between the ages of 10 and 17.
It's great for the band that they have a lot of younger fans but this was ridiculous, you had guys taking their daughters of 8 or 9 to see these guys. Maybe they were naive but VR ain't exactly a teeny bop group you know? Their website has an 18 rating for a start..
Anyway, the doors opened and in we went. We were standing and made our way to the front of the stage in front of Slash's microphone. I guess there must have been maybe three or four rows of people in front of us, mostly kids.. I found it quite amusing that here we were, two older fans from the GNR era, surrounded by pubescant teenage boys all trying to cultivate some form of facial hair... haha, it was really strange and funny but later all this teen angst around us would manifest itself in a more dangerous way.
So we were in place at 6pm.. The warm up act, I think somebody said they were "the Datsuns" came on quite late, about 7:40pm or so, so the crowd had been waiting 40 minutes over the start time already... The band were pretty good although they seemed to expend more energy in spastic movements onstage than in their playing... These guys finished their set at around 8:20pm.
Then we waited, and waited.... And waited... And waited... Some asshole was shouting "Slash!!" so loudly next to us it actually hurt our ears more than the show itself! But we waited... The background music was repeated over and over and the crowd were getting restless. All these impatient kids down the front were getting pissed off and started booing. You could feel the situation and it was getting quite tightly packed at the front..
Eventually the band came onstage at 9:45pm, 85 minutes after the warm up act finished.. They played "Sucker Train Blues" and all the impatience of the young crowd was released in a dangerous way. I've been in mosh pits before, I know what they are like but this was very different. The surge of these kids, some of them obviously on various substances started literally going mad.. The whole area became so tightly packed it was difficult to breath, the huge swell of the crowd was pusing left then right as one and we looked at each other and decided it was just too dangerous. If one of those kids fell they would have been trampled to death without question. Both of us are physically very strong and we had to work very hard to push our way out of the situation. But we did.. It was a miracle nobody was seriously hurt. All these young fans being made to wait so long was the deciding factor in the situation, no question. Security were not good enough and lacking in numbers for such a huge crowd.
Anyway, we moved to a safer position towards the right of the stage and apart from some guy in front that stunk of **** we enjoyed the gig tremendously. The crowd at the front seemed to calm down after about 3 numbers and it was much better.
Scott Weiland seemed off his head. If he's off heroin then he's an extremely good actor in my opinion.. Slash was just Slash.. Brilliant as ever and delighted to be playing so close to his birthtown.. "Hi to all my distant cousins" he yelled at one point.
They played the majority of the Contraband album plus "It's So Easy", "I Used To Love Her" and an awesome "Mr.Brownstone" from the GNR days. All in all a good performance.
If the fan base around the world is like the one at this gig VR could become a very big band indeed.. It's a Big Machine...
I took a few pictures at the gig but due to the rather stressed conditions involved in taking them most were pretty bad... Here is one of Slash that came out OK though.... And one of Scott & Dave too...

I'm glad you both are okay, because crowd situations (no matter what the event) are scary. Glad it was a great show too, great pics!!
I remember when I went to an event for Planet Hollywood in Dallas and Patrick Swayze was going to be there. The crowd went a little nuts and my mom and I were at the front of this barrier and the people were pushing and we were getting crushed against the barrier. We had to tell the police to make the people stop pushing, it was scary. Look what happened at the Who concert many years ago. :distress:
Thanks for the review, MFM. :)

You are so lucky to have seen VR! I love STP and Slash is forever cool in my eyes!
I was at a No Doubt concert (Return of Saturn tour, not that last album) and it was the same situation, but it was REALLY funny because there were a bunch of prissy ass girls down up front and they were getting really mad about all the pushing. One of them was about ready to cry. Then all of a sudden one fell, and then it became about 15 girls all piled up on top pf eachother. Thankfully, I am a pretty strong person, too and managed to not fall in, it took about 5 minutes to get everybody up. It was so freakin' hilarious!
They all ran off crying, and then I got up to the stage really close:)

The concert sounds a bit chaotic - but good - thanks for the great review...
I once knocked down a drunken asian man at a Melissa Etheridge concert - then in a mad try to get her to shake my hand I accidentally grabbed a handful of her hair instead :( Ooops....that's the wildest thing that's ever happened in my concert going days

That is hilarious!!! I met Raine Maida and touched him...well groped him, but whatever! I also said something really funny/stupid to him. I told him I threw a joint on stage...And I did! Everybody started laughing. We just happened to be passing by the venue like an hour after the show, and some guy asked us if we were waiting for the band, and that they'd be in the back alley soon. We ran through a very scary place to get there, and a half an hour later, low and behold, Mr. Yummy Raine Maida!
