Since we were posting our Fleetwood Mac Song of the Moment on the Rumours Thread, I thought it would be fun if we put up the Lindsey song that we were into at the moment too.
I'll start us off:

Also I'm into IKINW, I'm So Afraid (Earls Court 29/11/03), Doing What I Can and Shadow Of The West

I'm So Afraid (Earls Court 29/11/03)
That brings back soooooo many great memories!! I need to go get that CD and put that version on my playlist. It's wierd, I was front row for all the England shows, except that night...Seteca and I were in the 25th or something row and when I heard ISA...I was crying! I didn't cry at the other shows...even though I was right up there watching him. That's the power of the song.
Solo LB song of the moment...well, lately, it's been Go Insane...live versions on my computer...NYC or Washington DC.
BTW, it IS the same thing. ;)

That night's version was special for two reasons, firstly his playing was on fire and he really deviated from the norm on the solo that particular night which I could see and hear (even though Tuigirl and I were a whole two rows in front of you!!! )
Secondly he trashed the Turner on that one when he threw it across the stage, the facts of which have become legend now.. Rick Turner thinks LB should go back to smoking grass to calm him down and reduce the guitar repairs!!

Don't ya just kick yourself when you rediscover a song? All that time wasted not thinking twice about it.
My love for OOTC overshadowed L&O. OOTC was in the car one day and it was too rainy to go get it. I needed a Lindsey fix and decided L&O over GI. Best decision I ever made.

Right now I'm completely in love with "Someone's Got to Change Your Mind."
Everytime I listen to it I have to crank up the volume and sing along.
But I'm also in love with the live versions of Peacekeeper and Come.
Keeping my fingers crossed that he puts out a solo album this year. What I wouldn't give to see him in concert. (Saw FM three times on the SYW tour, fantastic show but I'm not really a Stevie fan. I just went to see Lindsey)

Good deal, JS! I just listen to my iTunes playlist most of the time, but today, it was stuck on Lindsey songs, even though, it's on shuffle. So, I guess I've influenced iTunes.
After being so sick of Peacekeeper during the SYW tour I've been playing Lindsey's solo version of Peacekeeper that was posted on the torrent site. How freaking fabulous is this track compared to what happened to that song on SYW? Absolutely stunning! The "all of our friends are Gods" little change of tune is simply beautiful and makes this version for me.
This version is also so much cleaner and uncluttered then the SYW version. There's a gorgeous melody in this version that just got junked up in the SYW track. Shame on Lindsey for mucking this song up :(

The copy of Gift of Screws in my collection does not have this song on it at all, so I've never heard the solo version. :(
I can say though that when I initially heard "Peacekeeper" on the radio I hated it. But since it was Lindsey I had to buy the damned cd anyway. So I ordered it off the FM website. I assumed that since I was paying out the a$$ for the album that I would be receiving the "Special Edition" version (and don't even get me started about the supposed free "poster" - something that I could have printed on my own damn computer on the same type of ****ty paper they used - that came with it). Eventually the song grew on me and I started liking it. Then I finally got a copy of the Special Edition disc and heard the live version of the song and LOVED IT. I love the live version so much in fact that I can't stand the studio version anymore and NEVER listen to it.
On a side note - I still find it really stupid that they made him change "only kill" to "break their will" for the radio single.

If you PM me with your email address I'll send you the solo version from the torrent site. It's a big file so make sure your email can handle it.
Do you have the song that was on the Boston DVD? I can send you that live version if you want also.
I could barely tolerate it on the cd and had learned to tolerate it somewhat on the live cds. There were times where I briefly liked it. Trust me, you'll love this version, most fans do and find it a crime what happened to it on SYW.
Don't get me started on the fanclub, the limited edition cd with the poster that Jonathan Todd DID print off on his home computer. BTW, what POSTER is 8x14?

Welcome, Madness Fades! We all had some hightime Red Rover-periods the last two years. I did too, but now I'm on the unreleased GOS-tracks more frequent, as I am to the older Go-insane-stuff. Right now, it's Shuffle Riff on repeat. I think that is one of the best he's ever written. With a simply BRILLIANT bridge and outtro.

Me too. I've been on a TOF kick lately. I hear a lot of the same creative energy I heard in GYOW when I was young. It gives me hope that old fogies can still rock out when given the right inspiration. I hear GYOW as the thesis and TOF as the antithesis. Does anyone else think these songs have anything in common?
I wish TOF had been on SYW instead of BTLH. This song has to be released on something. It sounds like a hit to me, but what do I know?

ITA,
When I heard it the first time I thought: this is 100% certain the first single. Buck or Mac, whatever. It could have hit hard. Just because it has the spunk and the energy AND it's so undeniable Mac.

Of all LB's Gift of Screws material, I don't understand why Twist of Fate wasn't included on SYW. It sounds the most like Fleetwood Mac of all Lindsey's recent solo songs. With a little polish it could have hit big as a first single. It also could have given SYW some unity and bridged a major gap that hurt sales...it sounded too much like 2 solo albums not a Mac project. Lots of fans didn't like that feel, as with Tusk, and it was a big reason people didn't buy SYW. TOF and Down on Rodeo, with redone vocals on both (actual harmony singing not tacked on backing vocals by Stevie) would have warmed things up for a better Mac feel without compromising individuality. Instead of fighting over a double cd or running order, the project would have been better served if they had made better choices on what was included. That issue was a minor point touched on in the DR documentary, and I think it ended up being the project's biggest shortcoming. A few minor changes could have made SYW more successful right out of the gate without being a sell-out. If LB had eliminated BTLH to make room for TOF, and as much as I love it, Murrow dropped in favor of Rodeo, which has the Mac feel that Murrow does not, it would have made for a better product all around. Fleetwood Mac doesn't do social or political commentary, anyway, so Murrow would have worked better on a solo album. jmho

Well....I agree on the inclusion of TOF. I disagree on everything else you put up in your post. With the right single, they could have made a great start selling SYW, but on the other side, I'm glad it is not a "safe twelvetrack". And besides.... you put TOF and DOR in the place of two other buckingham songs, although there are much weaker songs on SYW. So if you want to put it that way: Not a blend of two solo-albums, then skip Silver Girl at least, and put the strength of songs as the first criterium not the amount of songs of each writer. And I would have prefered Shuffle Riff in stead of DOR.
And yes.....I still think a double-album would have been better.....

Hold on there, pard. I said a few minor changes would have helped, not that it should have been a safe twelve track. I wanted the double album too, but let's be realistic. Stevie didn't have enough good material for a double without hauling losers out of the vault. You know she had to be equally represented. She didn't want to be a backup singer on an LB solo venture riding on the name Fleetwood Mac. I don't doubt years ago when they first started working together again, Mick gave LB the idea he could trade on the name of the band to do whatever he wanted musically, as long as Mick and John got work out of it. After the Dance was so successful, and Stevie did reasonably well with TISL, the focus shifted back to the band being a democracy. That's when the double cd became a dead issue. Mick just forgot to tell Lindsey.
Besides, what form would the double have taken? Two solo albums on two different cds, or what we ended up with anyway? You're right about Shuffle Riff. I'd even include the song GOS. Then we're back to the problem of equal space going to both writers. Silver girl. Ack! What a waste of space. A couple of Stevie's other songs could have been left off but not if we were going to get all we wanted from Lindsey. So there's the rub. Back to square one.
Gift of Screws as it was submitted--going by the lossless torrent audio I have--and with the addition of the lossless version of Peacekeeper Neil put out, it was a beautiful album the way it was. Lindsey should have put it out himself as an 18 track cd and started fresh on new stuff for a Fleetwood Mac project, as Stevie should have. If they'd done so after the Dance tour, we'd have two or three cds of new material by now and the band could be totally revitalized instead of limping along as it is. I fear it's over now. I hope I'm wrong.
Thinking of how recording industry politics has affected everything since the band reunited, I see the only good double cd being the one they could have done if Stevie had not put out her solo stuff on TISL after the Dance. Considering how long Linds held on to some of the GOS material it wasn't unrealistic, but I guess she had a new solo deal and LB didn't have a deal of his own, I guess, or the suits just rejected GOS outright? Anyone know the story of how that went down? That's a whole new thread, I guess.

That's when the double cd became a dead issue. Mick just forgot to tell Lindsey.Lindsey may have had "Tusk" on his mind. In fact, I seem to remember his mentioning "Tusk" as the benchmark if he was going to do a Fleetwood Mac album again -- this was in a print interview back around 2000 (?).

There was that out-with-the-old-regime-&-in-with-the-new at the label, which really dampened Lindsey's enthusiasm (such as it was) for doing his own album. The band's label did hear "Gift of Screws" in 2001; I heard some of them liked it & some of them didn't (& Lindsey felt that some of them may have been attempting to pave the way for a transition into a Fleetwood Mac project). Lindsey wavered for a long time -- I wish I could find that interview he did with the L.A. Times (maybe it was with Patrick Goldstein, who used to do Pop Eye) in which he vacillates & hedges more than I've ever seen him do. The interview is a riot because he just absolutely refuses to commit to anything -- a time frame, an album, a band project, etc.
In another thread, we're talking about whether it would be good for the Macsters to record on a small label like Sanctuary. I think the megalabels like Warner are the worst possible surroundings for the Macsters at this point, not only logistically but psychologically. Imagine the conflicting signals they get from those guys, most of whom are half their age: "You're the legendary band that can rule the airwaves once again"; "You're washed up"; "Stop making records & just tour for nostalgia's sake"; "You can have a hit again"; "There's no way in hell you'd have a hit again"; "We're not here to tell you what to do"; "We need to approve every step you take," etc.

The only time he goes into detail about anything is when he's talking about his equipment and tunings and such in mags like Guitar World. When it comes to anything else, forget it.

Fleetwood Mac doesn't do social or political commentary, anyway, so Murrow would have worked better on a solo album. jmho
Very true. I think LB might have held on to "Twist of Fate" as one of the "commercial" songs he keeps for himself (as he hinted he might do on the DR doc.) Since it was already played on the Wild California DVD, it definitely wasn't considered "discard" material.

Ha ha! The hint in the DR doc is hilarious! "I'm taking my ball and going home. Boo hoo!" Seriously, I think LB said that stuff about keeping songs for a solo album out of frustration. I got the impression Mick's bailing on him to side with Stevie over the double cd was a huge backstab in his eyes. He didn't seem to know how to respod to Mick's flip flop except to say, I can do that too.
Keeping TOF for a solo cd makes sense, honey buns, IF YOU'RE EVA GONNA PUT OUT A SOLO CD!
Where is it, sweetie pie? :xoxo: I want my Gift of Screws! :D

Don't Stop....I know strictly, this isn't a lindsey song, but he sings most of it...in particular the SYW tour "live" at Earls court..Nov 9th 2003.
That whole version is absolutely fab, esp coz it's like a football crowd, all singing their sox off and their enthusiasm def rubs off on the lead guitarist who seems to go off on one of his super long crazy solos (somewhat like this crazy post....) anyway, do listen if your'e lucky enough to have it, one of the best "live" versions ever.
PS..a no. of Ledgies I know, added their voices to said recording...hehe.

I started off listening to Out of the Cradle and then progressed to Go Insane, I had Law and Order and never realy listened to it apart from Trouble. But hay, the more you listen to the album the more it grows on you and Johnny Stew is a funky little number.
It's almost like I've discovered a new album, the next on my list is Tusk, another album I coundn't get into years ago.

Wow, what bad stuff? Tusk is my favorite FM album by far. Not only is Lindsey's stuff all strong, but Stevie's best songs (Storms, Beautiful Child, Sara, Sisters of the Moon) are on that album. Two of my fav LB songs, I Know I'm Not Wrong, What Makes You Think You're The One, are on Tusk. I even like Christine's stuff on Tusk for the most part, with one notable exception (HH).
My favorite LB studio work is mostly on OOTC, Tusk, and Say You Will. If you ask me to pick a song, it will probably be different every time.

Yep, Tusk is Stevie's best collection of songs for an album. She was just ON. When I first became an FM fan (was a Lindsey fan first), I came online and read people say Tusk was horrible because Lindsey's music was bad, it wasn't like Rumours, etc. It just scared me at first. LOL I eventually bought it and went "WTH is wrong with those morons, this album rules!" I have to say Christine's songs are my least faves on the album.

That's interesting, because the Buckingham fans I know like tend to like Tusk more than Rumours. There's no mega-hit like Go Your Own Way, but I think his overall contribution to the album was more significant. There is a more Buckingham feel to Tusk.
And while I'm not a C-McV fan, I don't skip past 5 of her 6 songs.

Come may be his best studio solo work.
But a hidden gem on Say You Will is his work on 'Destiny Rules.' The guitar work turned what would otherwise be an ordinary-at-best song into one of my two or three favorites on an album I like an awful lot. Coming out of the last chorus into the ending 'lift' section still gives me big-time chills.

Yeah, too bad that didn't make it to the CD version. I personally could have done without another CD version of Big Love which is essentially the same as 'The Dance' version. No Say Goodbye was a big oversight.

I've tried...can't get past Stevie's poor vocal delivery (AND lyrics) on RTTG. Even Lindsey's guitar sounds painfully rehashed, too.
Just swap RTTG out with "Not Make Believe" and I'm a happy camper with SYW. Well, a PERFECT SYW would have the "wall-o-sound" mix of "Thrown Down", too. (in addition to, not instead of, the version on the album...I like both, but the w-o-s version a little better since it sounds MORE "Fleetwood Mac"-ish...would've made a great single.

Well OK. I just disagree with you on these topics. I think Stevie sounds very powerful on RTTG and Lindsey's heavyrockguitarlicks including the overdrive sound are pure heaven to me. I just don't think it's Stevie's strongest composition. The songstructure of SYW's Thrown Down is so much better then the bridgeless TD, imo. Let's not start over with the WOS-description. I still think it doesn't carry the load. I agree with you that it sounds more typical Mac, and that's why I don't like it. Macs best BN-singles in my book were GYOW, Dreams, Tusk, Sara and I would have LOVED to see SYW-singles like Miranda, Illume or even Red Rover. Cranky singles that pierce the ears. Not too commercial but great gems that can live on their own. Why did they have the guts in the Tusk-era and not in these times?

Let's not start over with the WOS-description.
Didn't mean to ruffle feathers. But, it isn't really a "description" at this point...that's how that version is pretty much generally known around the on-line Fleetwood Mac community. Kind of like calling Scott's brand tissue a "Kleenex" or ANY copy machine a "Xerox machine". Or, telling someone you'll "Fed Ex" the document to them, when you know in your head you use DHL or UPS.
Macs best BN-singles in my book were GYOW, Dreams, Tusk, Sara...
But, it was the smooth Christine McVie tunes like "Over My Head", "Say YOu Love Me", "Don't Stop", "You Make Loving Fun" & "Little Lies" that got Fleetwood Mac the airplay & chart positions. "Dreams" was a fluke".
...and I would have LOVED to see SYW-singles like Miranda, Illume or even Red Rover. Cranky singles that pierce the ears. Not too commercial but great gems that can live on their own. Why did they have the guts in the Tusk-era and not in these times?
I would've like to have heard those getting airplay just as much...so we agree there. The problem is that Fleetwood Mac is old hat & irrelevant to the pop charts...and just about ALL groups from the "golden era" are (McCartney, the Stones, the Who, etc)...the demographic of the massive record buying public is not the demographic of Fleetwood Mac's audience. Radio is not "Fleetwood Mac friendly" either...they don't fit any "format" of radio today...Classic Rock stations RARELY play the new material from "Classic Rock" artists...they still overkill us with their '60's & '70's material.

Who listens to the radio nowadays anyway? Airplay might sell a few more albums, but it's videos that increase sales, IMO. There's not really a market for FM videos anymore, either. So they are screwed on both sides of the coin.
