Shania Twain goes Double Diamond
by Paul Cashmere
10 December 2004
Shania Twain's 'Come On Over' album has jumped past The Beatles 'White Album', AC/DC's 'Back In Black' and Fleetwood Mac 'Rumours' to become the 6th biggest selling album of all time in the USA.
'Come On Over' has been certified Double Diamond for sales exceeding 20 million. (Diamond is awarded at 10 million sales, Platinum in the USA is for sales over 1 million).
Shania's album as a double diamond release is in exclusive company sitting behind The Eagles 'Their Greatest Hits' at 28 million, Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and 26 million, Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' at 23 million, Led Zeppelin 'IV' at 22 million and Billy Joel's 'Greatest Hits' at 21 million.
The Diamond certification was first awarded in 1999. Unlike the Australian ARIA certifications, the American system is based on sales to the public. Elton John commented at the inaugural certification ceremony "I think this is the biggest accolade you can be given because it means your fans have gone out and bought your records. And that's why we make records - for our public."
The first person to receive a Gold Award was Perry Como for 'Catch A Falling Star' on March 15, 1958.
The first platinum single was awarded to Johnny Taylor for 'Disco Lady' in 1976. The first platinum album was The Eagles 'Their Greatest Hits'.

I think Shania is a good artist, but she's not in the same league as the others IMO. She released practically every song from Come on Over as a single....very smart move. She seems like a nice person, though. I don't have anything against her.
I agree. I like Shania Twain and there's something in many Canadian's like myself that almost forces us to like her for the mere fact that she IS Canadian. She has a nice success story. But, she is NOT in the same rank with the other artists. Oh well...
I have Come On Over...I don't listen to it anymore. Needless to say I have Rumours. So she doesn't win in my house.

Rumours will always be one of the greatest albums ever made...no matter what. :)

Yeah, even I got to admit that Come On Over was a pretty good album. "That Don't Impress Me Much" was a danmed catchy song that I really liked back when it was released. Is it in the same league as Rumours, NO, but I can see it being sucha big seller.

I kinda like Shania, but I have heard "rumours" she is starting to get "not very nice" in the personal department. It's a shame when they start going nutsy as the fame and money come in. Why can't they all be like John McVie and stay down to earth? *sigh*
Plus, there's more people now to buy stuff...:) Is it population adjusted?
 Yea, I guess that's true. But on the other hand how many extra copies of Rumours have been sold because it's spanned the media formats of vinyl, 8-tracks, cassettes, cds, and remastered bonus track editions. I think I've bought at least five copies of Rumours myself over the years. Needless to say though Rumours is one of the best classic albums of all time.

Ms.Twain is not even close to being in the same league as our Mac, but I gotta give her credit...
She sings,she plays,she writes,she's pretty,charitable,she's about 40 AND she came from nothing.
I gotta give the girl the two thumbs up.

I don't hate Shania - but to me all of her songs sound the same - so to me - she reissuing the same damn songs over and over again with different names.....her slow songs all sound the same and same for the fast ones - it aggravates the crap out of me....

And what musical boundaries is she pushing? None. Folks, it's MASS marketing. Welcome to 2004. Nothing aurally offensive. Sexy spokeswoman. Walmart's America. Buy me...
But, I would say the same thing about Wacko Jacko. Who here can tell me that- artistically- Shania holds a candle to these other artists at the top of the list? FM, Pink Floyd(my god, the Wall is a masterpiece!), even the Eagles(who were certainly pushing the envelopes of country rock).
Mass marketed pop fodder. :distress:

Are we talking about possible physical favors she might engage in with Robert Lange before he works on one of her albums?:)
But seriously,no lie. A while back there was this segment on Shania on one of those news magazines...
At any rate, while on tour she visits a local charitable type organization/center and volounteers(sp?) for about an hour or something. It's like a daily thing.

Based on discussions we had awhile back, Dissention thinks anyone that gets anything from a charity in return for their services or donation is horrible. He refuses to accept that this happens all of the time and that the charities readily accept this as the star's attraction will net them many times the amount they pay the star. He thinks the stars should pay to fly themselves there, pay for their lodging, etc.
Having said that, from what you said her volunteer work is a great and unrenumerated thing  So, in that instance, Diss. is wrong - just as he was wrong about Michael Jackson having only little boys over to spend the night :p Hmmmm . . twice in two days - what's up with that Diss :wavey:

I read an interview with her and she said she basically has no sex drive. It was fairly surprising. They were talking about her sexpot image and it was ironic to her, considering that she felt her sex drive was very low to non existent. I think it was a Rolling Stone interview.

I'm sure Shania is a nice person, she seems sweet enough in interviews.. As pointed out earlier her husband Mutt Lange is very much a part of her success, as he was in making Def Lepperd a success too.
However, for me she lives up to exactly what Lindsey didn't want to do after the success of Rumours which is to take the formula and run it into the ground.. Everything she sings sounds exactly the same to me.. It's like Coke or Pepsi, people like the taste and it sells ****loads so why change it?
She might break records but she ain't a creative artist..

If the point is about records, I think the goal was at the momentum. Rumours was a phenomenom, as Thriller or Saturday Night Fever were. You can't compare (sales) a 2004 album against a 1977 album. RUMOURS RULED!!!!!

Ugh. Shania pretty much quit being innovative in the least after her The Woman in Me album. She's nothing of a songwriter unless Mutt is writing alongside her...probably doing most of the writing. I can't believe I used to listen to her music all the time. Was I that shallow in high school? For her to beat out the Beatles and FM is quite depressing.
She's been honest about her incredibly low sex drive for years now. She likes to distinguish being "sexy" from being "sexual." It kind of makes sense. :o

In some ways, she's comparable to Britney. And though Shania sings better than Britney, she still doesn't have a very unique voice, and we can certainly say that Stevie, Lindsey, and Christine do. And I give Mutt credit for the "catchy" and "tuneful" aspects of her music. Whenever she writes a song by herself, it's nothing compared to what she writes with him.

you're right, there are. But I think she's for sure better than Britney. I've definitely enjoyed some of her songs. But, I'm not much of a music snob, if i like the song (you know, fun to sing, makes my ears happy) I don't usually have to be all deep about it, necessarily. And, from what you say (and what i've heard) she really isn't a great writer. But again, I'm not too much of a lyrics person, necessarily. I sing millions of stevie and other people's songs knowing not all the lyrics. The difference between Shania & Fleetwood Mac is Shania's fan's are as young as 5 year's old, I don't think you can say that about FM, by daughter is 9 and has loved Shania since she was about 6. I took my daughter to see Shania last year when she was in Toronto & I couldn't believe how many little girls were there (even dressed like her). Shania's fans ages range from 5 - 80, that's quite a large fan base to sell album's to. Oh by the way when we were in our seats waiting for her to come on, Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" was playing over the PA system & I've heard from many other fan's that she played FM at every concert, so we know that she's a huge FM fan!

Hillary
Do you think FM sometimes writes shallow pop music? I think they do. The image that comes across makes all the difference, IMO. If a 14 year old was singing Little Lies, it would come off as TRL material. I also think not writing their own songs is an issue and makes it come across as uninspiring and meaningless.
Shania does write her own material, but the audience she is targeting is the reason why she is "pop country". She knows how to sells records. Talking about boy/girl problems in a childish way just doesn't do it for me, but it does for a 17 year old. I do have to say that Woman in Me is a great song!

Do you think FM sometimes writes shallow pop music? I think they do.Yeah, they do. But I justify myself listening to it because there is real music thrown in the mix as well. (Something was grammatically incorrect about that sentence, but I don't know what it was so hell with it). Songs like "Everywhere" could be considered shallow pop music, but I still prefer Christine's voice to Shania's, and that makes a big difference to me. That and the fact that "Everywhere" has sentimental value to me.
But I know deep down that we should just listen to what we enjoy listening to, and that's that. I'll try to adopt that viewpoint, but then one of my brothers will make fun of me for listening to shallow music and some reference will be made to how I'm the youngest and not the brightest in the family. So, I've always got my reasons for being uptight, stupid as they are.

We had a discussion about charitable donations, taxes, etc., awhile back wherein you said you would never get that people should get any tax break or that companies should make donations for favorable public exposure. Sinilarly, charities know that they will make tenfold what they give the stars (most of which is donated or obtained at a reduced cost BTW). That is where I was getting that. If this is not what you said - then I am wrong (but I know you said it  ) or you said it and have changed your mind - so be it.

I think what's more behind Shania's success is her huge, beautiful voice and gorgeous bod. Her husband is definitely part of her sound, but he's not the one up there shaking his ass on stage night after night and belting out those songs. Wow, and I'm not even a Shania fan!!
I just hate it when a man gets all the credit for a hard working woman's success.

I also think not writing their own songs is an issue and makes it come across as uninspiring and meaningless.
This is something I will always disagree with. Go tell that to Dionne Warwick after having listened to what she did with Burt Bacharach in the '60s. It's never been about who writes what, it's about how you perform that stuff that creates this illusion of authenticity and sincerity to people. As Burt himself said: without the right singer, you never have a song. Or as Sinatra said, "a singer is essentially an actor".

 Or Linda Ronstadt from any decade! She has always labeled herself as an interpreter of songs rather than a songwriter which is fine by me because she has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard AND she's kickstarted many talented songwriters' careers in music like Warren Zevon and The Eagles. She's tops in my book

Shania's first album, self titled, bombed, Mutt Lange comes into the picture, gold ever since. Shania wouldn't be up on that stage shaking her ass off in the first place if it weren't for her songs. One word to describe Shania's songs is "catchy" and that is due to Mutt's co-writing, composing and producing. Don't get me wrong, I love Shania, and not just because she's Canadian (but that helps  ) but her songs are just so damn "catchy" & her hot little bod don't hurt either
I hate it too when a man gets all the credit for a hard working woman's success but sometimes it does happen

Really, I don't give two hoots about Shania Twain so I guess I'm not really all that invested in this but all I can think about is footage I saw of her before she made it big, and the girl could sing. She does have vocal talent, unfortunately she's been "tarted" up and packaged as a Brittneyesque pop icon (and maybe it was her idea, I don't know) in order for her records to sell. It's a shame really, but it's something that has befallen many women in pop music, even the talented ones. I suppose this is the biggest shame of all. And I guess I hate that her talent is overshadowed by her image and her husband's deux machina "hand of god" presence in her music. Did I say I wasn't all that invested in this topic?

I don't know if it was like this in the states, but when Shania was just breaking through, what got her noticed here in Canada, was not her voice but her midriff. She was the first country artist to show her midriff (I think it was the video for "What Made You Say That?" or maybe it was "Any Man of Mine" (whatever) but it got everyone talking here. Not a big deal to me but it was alittle shocking at first

I never stated that people shouldn't get tax breaks, pal. I believe what I said was that I disagreed on a moral level with people donating to charities for the sole purpose of getting tax breaks. ;)
I don't give a flying fig what the charities get back tenfold, that isn't the issue. The issue is that I find it morally corrupt for these celebrities to take and demand such gifts for their appearances and the like. The ten grand that they're using to pamper celebs in hotel suites could be used to help someone who really needs it. But if you think it's fine for celebs to use charities for their own personal gain, that's your prerogative. :woohoo:
P.S. Please produce the proof on Shania. I wanna see where she demanded a Rolex :wavey:
I never said she did. ;) We had a discussion about her and her diva antics on this very board over the summer, do a search. :wavey:

Really, I don't give two hoots about Shania Twain so I guess I'm not really all that invested in this but all I can think about is footage I saw of her before she made it big, and the girl could sing.Really? What early footage did you see? Whenever I see a show about her like "Driven," for example, they show that same old footage of her wearing an overly-glitzy dress, sporting the ultimate eighties hair, and singing at this kinda dingy-looking nightclub, and she is nothin' special. And they talk about how great she was back then, and how her voice was just great. But she wasn't better than the average person. :sorry:
Still, she wasn't too shabby at "VH-1 Divas Live 98", IMO. I thought "You're Still the One" sounded good.
In reference to what bikerchic said about the videos, I believe it was "Any Man of Mine" that got her lots of attention in the U.S. Everyone was shocked about the midriff thing, and Shania's response was "Lots of people bare their midriffs; I don't understand why mine is such an issue." She failed to consider the fact that the "lots of people" weren't country music singers. Anyway, I know they played the video for "What Made You Say That" in the U.S., but it didn't do much on the charts, and when The Woman in Me came out, I remember a lot of people assuming it was her debut.

Bless your heart - you cannot see the forest for the trees  I am not arguing it is correct or moral for anyone to do what you assert (which keeps changing BTW :wavey: ) - I am just saying the charities have no problem with it (whatever "it" is) - if the stars get them tenfold the cost

Back to the original topic, Shania makes teeny-bopper music desguised as whatever "country" is nowadays. No wonder she sells so many records. I agree with Strand that Your Still The One was a great song though.
...And don't you two ever give it a rest?! :wavey:

I couldn't imagine that when I first heard about it. I believe she was about my age when her parents were suddenly killed in that car accident. I absolutely cannot fathom getting up one morning and learning that both of my parents are dead and I have to be the strong one and become the head of the household. :distress:

Yeah, and now look at the young, female country/pop stars today, they're all baring it and then some. Shania started a midriff baring revolution in country music!
I don't know what footage I saw, but it wasn't Driven. I saw something from right before she hit it big, she was performing on stage somewhere and I think she did have bad 80's poof hair and bad clothing.
