View Full Version : What one song .....?

What one song/lyric describes a moment of your life or time of your life?
A while ago at kareoke , someone sang The Needle the Damage Done.
The line, "but every junkie is like the setting sun"....boy....
I guess getting too personal is just not right on a fun board...but that line!

Cool thought Janet...
Let's see. The first things that come to my mind...
I've been dazed and confused for so long it's true.
And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. WHICH I feel that our Chris slightly echoes by, And I wish you all the love in the world but most of all I wish it from myself...
AND of course Mr.Sumner, When the world is coming down, you make the best of what's still around.
Also, She tells you she's an orphan, after you've met her family.
OK, I'll REALLY end this by shamelessly showing my 80's upbringing, They whisper promises in the dark.
And of course reiterate my fundamental love of the Fab Four...
Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream.
No one I think is in my tree.
And perhaps the best of all, She loves you, YEAH,YEAH,YEAH.

The entire song "Gypsy" was me graduating Law School and not having a clue what was to become of me. I could not find a job I liked and was breaking up a relationship - I came to the slow realization that I would have to leave my beloved New Orleans.
So I'm back, to the velvet
underground
Back to the floor, that I love
To a room with some lace
and paper flowers
Back to the gypsy
that I was
To the gypsy...
that I was
And it all comes down to you
Well, you know that it does
Well, lightning strikes,
maybe once, maybe twice
Ah, and it lights up the night
And you see your gypsy
You see your gypsy
To the gypsy that remains
faces freedom with a little fear
I have no fear, I have only love
And if I was a child
And the child was enough
Enough for me to love
Enough to love
She is dancing away from me now
She was just a wish
She was just a wish
And a memory is all
that is left for you now
You see your gypsy
You see your gypsy
Lightning strikes,
maybe once, maybe twice
And it all comes down to you
And it all comes down to you
Lightning strikes,
maybe once, maybe twice
And it all comes down to you
I still see your bright eyes,
bright eyes
And it all comes down to you
I still see your bright eyes,
bright eyes
And it all comes down to you
I still see your bright eyes,
bright eyes
(She was just a wish)
(She was just a wish)
And it all comes down to you
Lightning strikes,
maybe once, maybe twice
And it all comes down to you
So - in my head, I changed the she to a he and it was suddenly my life (how dramatic  )
Also, Outside the Rain was me when I went from like 190 pounds to over 300 pounds and then began the weight loss (which continues to this day   ) That whole:
So you're still lonely
You say that it's been forever
Maybe you never knew me -
Maybe you thought that
I'd never change - but
You know I'm changing
- You're wrong -
And it's been like dying -
No love's that hard to find -
And I'm tired of -
I'm tired of trying
was all about that for me
Finally:
Led Zeppelin's Fool in the Rain:
Well there’s a light in your eye that keeps shining
Like a star that can’t wait for the night
I hate to think I’ve been blinded baby
Why can’t I see you tonight?
And the warmth of your smile starts a-burnin’
And the thrill of your touch gives me fright
And I’m shaking so much, really yearning
Why don’t you show up, make it all right?
Yeah, it’s all right.
And if you promised you’d love so completely
And you said you would always be true
You swore that you would never leave me, baby:
What ever happened to you?
And you thought it was only in movies
As you wish all your dreams would come true
It ain’t the first time believe me, baby
I’m standin here feeling blue
Yeah I’m blue
Now I will stand in the rain on the corner
I’ll watch the people go shuffling downtown
Another ten minutes no longer
And then I’m turning around
The clock on the wall’s moving slower
My heart it sinks to the ground
And the storm that I thought would blow over
Clouds the light of the love that I found
Now my body is starting to quiver
And the palms of my hands getting wet
I’ve got no reason to doubt you baby,
It’s all a terrible mess
I’ll run in the rain till I’m breathless
When I’m breathless I’ll run till I drop, hey
The thoughts of a fool’s kind of careless
I’m just a fool waiting on the wrong block, oh yeah
Light of the love that I found...
was essentially my high school experience

currently I would say the following lyrics:
"F*ck your power trip and
F*ck your attitude and
F*ck your bloated ego too
F*ck your history, Your tragedy, Your misery
But most of all...F*ck you"

The lyrics:
If you forgive me my ferocity,
I won't forget your sweetness.
Pull down the night, lay it before me.
Gratify my head with curses.
Night recalls tranquility.
A curtain falls and sets it free.
Darkness calls eternity.
Down silent halls the shadows flee.
I had just graduated with my bachelors and was a wreck, financially and emotionally.

Of course I can't pick one.
First off, "Gate and Garden"--the whole thing. Also,
"Look at all these losers; you find them everywhere. They're f*cked up and annoying but somehow you seem to care." -The Cardigans (reminds me of my high school experience)
"Love is a word that some entertain. If you find it, you have won the game." -Stevie
Most of Stevie's "Juliet"
"I can't feel bad about the way I am." -Stevie again
"There are no doubts I feel the strain
Of all my senses yearning
Over and over again...
It's not important to wonder why
What is just is no more to imply
This simple thought repeating
Over and over again" (yeah, Stevie again)
"I'm old enough to love you from afar...too trusting, yes, but then women usually are."
"The faces of love have changed, turning the pages. I have changed, oh but you, you remain ageless."
All of Ani DiFranco's "She Says."
"I never remember anything
except for those things
which I never forget--you know
there's no in between" -Ani DiFranco, "Names, Dates, and Times"
"Everything I do
I do for the first time" Ani DiFranco, "Born a Lion"
"If you're gonna do it, overdo it--
That's how you know you're alive" -Ani DiFranco, "Used to You"
All of Ani's "Untouchable Face," "Wish I May," and "Slide"
"Nothing's so loud
As hearing when we lie
The truth is not kind
And you've said neither am I
But the air outside so soft is saying everything
Everything..." -Toad the Wet Sprocket, "All I Want"
"Men go crazy in congregations; they only get better one by one." -Sting, "All This Time"
I'll probably think of more later.
What a cool thread!

I'll remember you... too clearly
But, I'll survive another day
Conversations to share when there's no one there
I'd imagine what you'd say...
I'll see you in another life, now baby
I'll see you in my dreams
But, when I reach across the galaxy
I will miss your company
Company
I'll be... looking for company
Look and listen through the years
Some day you may hear me
Crying- I'll be crying...
Crying for company
So, now you're going on to live your life
You say we meet each other now and then
But, we'll never, never be the same
And I know I'll never have the same chance again
Oh, no, not like you- not like you
I'll see you in another life, now baby
I'll free you in my dreams
But, when I reach across the galaxy
I will miss your company
Company
I'll be... looking for company
Look and listen through the years
Some day you may hear me
Crying- I'll be crying...
Crying for company
Listen to me-
I'm still crying for company
Company.... oh, looking...
For company.....

Well, this would accompany my dark hair photo in the picture thread:
The roses in the window box
Have tilted to one side
Everything about this house
Was born to grow and die
Oh it doesn't seem a year ago
To this very day
You said I'm sorry honey
If I don't change the pace
I can't face another day
And love lies bleeding in my hand
Oh it kills me to think of you with another man
I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan
But my guitar couldn't hold you
So I split the band
Love lies bleeding in my hands
I wonder if those changes
Have left a scar on you
Like all the burning hoops of fire
That you and I passed through
You're a bluebird on a telegraph line
I hope you're happy now
Well if the wind of change comes down your way girl
You'll make it back somehow
Which would go hand in had with this:
The bright light is lying down
The earth and the sea and the sky
Is at rest with the ocean
And the days go by
They go into the seas that have no shores
Haunted by that same closed door
Looking up at skies on fire
Leaving nothing left of us
To discover
And the planets of the universe
Go their way
Not astounded by the sun or the moon
Or by the day
You and I will simply disappear
Out of sight
But I'm afraid soon there'll be
No light
No doubt, no pain
Come ever again, well
Let there be light in this lifetime
In the cool, silent moments of the nighttime
We will never change again
The way that we are changing
2001 was rough. I'll post a happy one later. :)

Sweet Girl would basicaly be the story of my life...
"come down here for a minute..."
"I chose to dance across the stages of the world..."
"Sometimes even I am allowed to fall..."
Also Silver Girl,
"She was a Silver Girl, Lost in a High Tech World...She would've perferred the last generation..." "Insane far beyond her years...She's a wild adventurer"
And Gypsy, although oddly enough I could be either side of that song, the gypsy leaving, or the girl watching the gypsy leave...

Great Topic!
Landslide- "Can I sail through the changing ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life, I don't know?"
This applies when I moved away from home for school.
Bella Donna- Really just the name Donna cause thats my mothers name so it reminds me of her.
Shelby Lynne's If I Were Smart- "If I were smart, I wouldn't have a heart."
There is a ton more songs, but those are the first that came to my head.

Beautiful Child is tightly connected with a tough moment I've gone through at the start of this year. I was in the middle, for a number of reasons, of a very deep sense of loss, and to listen to that song has been very soothing, because, even in a totally different context, was able to give words to what I was feeling.

There are three songs I can think of instantly.
One is this amazing song by Sam Phillips on Fan Dance called "Taking Pictures." Sometimes it strikes me as very, very strange that I'm growing up and that things are changing and that I'm not who I used to be. Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
When I take a picture of the city it disappears
It's only a photograph the city is gone
The places I go are never there
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be
I can only picture the disappearing world when you touch me.
He brought me the air of Paris in a bottle
The record caught the air of London nineteen sixty-five
The places I go are never there
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be
I can only picture the disappearing world when you touch me.
And Lucinda Williams' Side of the Road is the soundtrack to heartbreak for me.
You wait in the car on the side of the road
Let me go and stand awhile, I wanna know you're there but I wanna be alone
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna know the touch of my own skin
Against the sun, against the wind
I walked out in a field, the grass was high, it brushed against my legs
I just stood and looked out at the open space and a farmhouse out a ways
And I wondered about the people who lived in it
And I wondered if they were happy and content
Were there children and a man and a wife?
Did she love him and take her hair down at night?
If I stray away too far from you, don't go and try to find me
It doesn't mean I don't love you, it doesn't mean I won't come back and
stay beside you
It only means I need a little time
To follow that unbroken line
To a place where the wild things grow
To a place where I used to always go
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna know the touch of my own skin
Against the sun, against the wind
And, yesterday was the eight year anniversary of my grandmother's death. She meant so much to me, and I miss her every day. It's my "dark day" every year, and the tragedy last night in Ohio didn't help me today at all. "A Long December" came out RIGHT at that time, and I can't listen to this song at this time of the year without bursting into tears.
The smell of hospitals in the winter
and the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters, but no pearls

Not my favorite Stevie song, but I can appreciate the lyrics. It is almost like Bon Jovi wrote this about my life, instead of Stevie's life. The lyrics pretty much sum up the story of my life.
Sometimes It's A Bitch
Well I've run thru rainbows and castles of candy
And I've cried a river of tears from the pain
I try to dance with what life has to hand me
My partner's been pleasure, my partner's been pain
There are days when I swear I could fly like an eagle
and dark, desperate hours that nobody sees
My arms stretched triumphant on top of the mountain
My head in my hands, down on my knees
Chorus:
Sometimes it's a bitch, sometimes it's a breeze
Sometimes love's blind and sometimes it sees
Sometimes it's roses, but sometimes it's weeds
Sometimes it's a bitch...but sometimes...it's a breeze
I've reached in darkness and come out with treasures
I've laid down with love and I've woke up with lies
What's it all worth? - Only the heart can measure
It's not what's in the mirror, but what's left inside
you've gotta take it as it comes......
Sometimes it don't come easy.......
Well I've run thru rainbows and castles of candy
I've cried a river of tears from the pain
I've tried to dance with what life had to hand me
And if I could, I'd do it all over again
Sometimes it's a bitch, sometimes it's a breeze
Sometimes the picture just ain't what it seems
you get what you want but it's not what you need
Sometimes it's a bitch and sometimes....it's a breeze
Sometimes it's a breeze

AMERICAN GIRL
Well she was an american girl
Raised on promises
She couldn’t help thinkin that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, an d if she had to die
Tryin’ she had one little promise
She was gonna keep
Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an american girl
It was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
She could the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin’ in the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God it’s so painful
Something that’s so close
And still so far out of reach
Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an american girl
but if i picked a stevie song, it would have to be "gypsy" like so many of u also have chose, there is just some kind of mysticisum *(sp) & truth to the lyrics, they just touch the heart deep + it is the best fm video!!! stevie is just so delish in it  :p  ~

"In Walks The Night"
(Ann Wilson/Nancy Wilson/Daniel O'Brien/Tina Harris)
The night is falling like an angel on your memory
We are well acquainted -- we are sworn enemies
And the lonely beating of my heart tonight is only one more thing I gotta fight
When I think about you, baby
Days of heaven that we had
Then I get to thinking maybe -- maybe too much thinking's bad
Well, my mind takes no prisoners
Pities no one
Spares not even me 'til the harm is done
Here I go again
The night just walked in
In walks the night
In walks my fantasy
Darkness all around me
And I'm dying for the light
I reach down for a little strength deep inside
Well, I know I love my freedom
But lonely feelings come and go
And nighttime is a season
Oh, feel the cold wind blow
And I toss and I turn and I walk the floor
I don't wanna cry -- don't wanna cry no more
Here I go again
The night just walked in
In walks the night
In walks my fantasy
Darkness all around me
And I'm dying for the light
I reach down for a little strength deep inside
I reach down for my sanity
Oh, if only these eyes could see -- through all the emptiness I found around me
In walks the night
I can almost feel you in the darkness all around
Still I'm waiting for the break of day
Waiting for a miracle
A dream that won't wander away
Well, my mind takes no prisoners
Pities no one
It spares not even me 'til the harm is done
Here I go again
The night just walked in
In walks the night
In walks my fantasy
Darkness all around me
And I'm dying for the light
I reach down for a little strength deep inside
I reach down for my sanity
Oh, if only these eyes could see -- through all this emptiness I found around me
In walks the night
The night just walked in
Yeah, in walks the night
The night just walked in
Maybe I'll be all right
In walks the night

Blue October's "Inner Glow" is hitting home right now; I'm kind of in this whole "if I'm going to do what I love, it's time to not do what everyone else wants me to do" state of mind.
I'm like a storm cloud eager when you go wild
Calm again
I ask permission for the wrong to win
Drop the bomb and get your story out and get it on
In a haze, the beginning of your days
Gonna fall down, got to get back up, but at your own pace
Gonna fill your cup and find the way out of your own maze
Boy, what you said now
And hide the rule book throw it in the waste
Look strong
Like you belong 'cause you do belong,
Whether right or wrong, you belong
I'm on your side...
If you fail, at least you tried
To keep your aching, celebrating, wondermaking heart alive
And pride... don't keep it all inside
Don't keep your aching, celebrating, wondermaking heart alone
Write your own song
"Thinking Over" by Dana Glover was me in the middle of my junior year. I had no idea what was coming the next year, or the one after that... just so many changes, so many decisions to make. And I'm still not done making them.
I've been searching for a reason
And I'm running out of time
I can feel that it's the season
It's time to make up my mind
And I can't really tell you what I'm going to do
There are so many thoughts in my head
There are two roads to walk down and one road to choose
So I'm thinking over the things that you've said
I'm thinking over the things...
When my ex broke up with me... that was over two years ago and it's still hard, I saw him the other week and he has changed so much. I just wish I could reach out to him, he's such a beautiful soul... but I can't, it would never work. After that went down I started writing, though, so it's a good thing... I got "Only in Dreams" out of that and looking back it's the cheesiest thing I've ever written (well maybe not totally), but it was my way of letting go and giving up... it's just not something I want to deal with if this is what it's like. Love stinks. :(
It's born in a moment, refuses to die
Taken for granted, transcends even time
Always an illusion, never is what it seems
Something so precious it lives only in dreams

I just wasn't made to be here all my life. The post high school schooling here is amazing, believe it or not and that's why I stayed. Come May 14th, I'm busting out of this hot dog stand and finding me a man, a dog, and a job that pays the bills....and then some.
Until then....
Curtis...I wish you well in getting over your ex. Come May 14th, expect a full-blown, no-holds-barred Ledge par-TAY! That is, if you don't have other plans.

Intersting choices everyone...this was very tough for me. I settled on this one though...
"Hurt" Written by Trent Reznor, Performed by Johnny Cash
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
Let's just say, it's been rough..

Totally Forgot Vienna by Billy Joel
Slow down, you crazy child
you're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart, tell me
Why are you still so afraid?
Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You'd better cool it off before you burn it out
You've got so much to do and
Only so many hours in a day
But you know that when the truth is told..
That you can get what you want or you get old
You're gonna kick off before you even
Get halfway through
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?
Slow down, you're doing fine
You can't be everything you want to be
Before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight
Tonight,...
Too bad but it's the life you lead
you're so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong, you know
You can't always see when you're right. you're right
You've got your passion, you've got your pride
but don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?
Slow down, you crazy child
and take the phone off the hook and disappear for awhile
it's all right, you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize,..Vienna waits for you?
And you know that when the truth is told
that you can get what you want or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get half through
Why don't you realize,. Vienna waits for you
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

In fact, I was skiing one time and I purposefully put both of my arms out arms out and BELTED on the way down "My arms stretched triumphant on top of the mountain" and the rest of the song - Fortunately was not soon with my head in my hands and down on my knees after a spill  Seriusly, I think the song is great

I thought everyone could relate to that song. I love it (thought i was the only one  )
that song speaks to my condition always. Love it.
You are not alone! That is cool to hear that you relate to it as well. I wish none of us could relate to it. I wish I could have picked a happier life theme song.

this is 1 of my ALL time fav songs & i relate 2 the lyrics so much~ it is very me~
AMERICAN GIRL
Well she was an american girl
Raised on promises
She couldn’t help thinkin that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, an d if she had to die
Tryin’ she had one little promise
She was gonna keep
Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an american girl
It was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
She could the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin’ in the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God it’s so painful
Something that’s so close
And still so far out of reach
Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an american girl
I love that song as well. That is a great choice! The lyrics are very true, I think, for a lot of "American Girls."

No Doubt - Comforting Lie
I started out on the wrong foot
Now I'm not myself
I am Jekyll, I am Hyde
Found this place to hide
Come seek me
Oh, so up and down
So back and forth
So insecure
Can't get this taste out of my mouth
Swallow it down
Pretend
Hold it, hold it all in
Let it build up
Build a bomb
Blow it, blow it away
Clear it all out
Just end it
I'm just a normal person
Without those problems
When did it change
Admissions so embarrassing
I'm on the verge of tears again
Hold it, hold it all in
Let it build up
Build a bomb
And blow it, blow it away
Clear it all out
Just end it
Oh look I took the Band-Aid off
Did I take it off too soon
Hysterical confession
My big courageous move
Don't gasp at the predictable
A comforting lie can't last
Preordained checklist of this awkward love
It's so sad
Hold it, hold it all in
Let it build up
Oh, build a bomb
Blow it, blow it away
Clear it all out
Just end it
Sort it, sort it out
Just give it back
No thank you
Toss it, toss it away
Eliminate
Just give up
I can't decide
This tug of war
I'm feeling weak, yeah
Why I'm relating to this song, I don't know. But I am, somehow.
The Pretenders - Never Do That.
Let me stay
One more day
It would mean so much to me
I won't make a sound
I'll just hang around
I'll sit where the last one sat
But oh no
I'd never do that
Take my mouth as far as you can see
It stretches father than I care to think
Put me out of my misery
If I could keep it shut
I wouldn't be in this rut
With less chance than a laboratory rat
Oh no
I'd never do that
You're a master of illusion
You say you do - but you don't
You think I will - I know I won't
When I see you sitting there
It sends a shock right through me
I never thought an ordinary chair
Could have such poetry
I don't deserve your time
I haven't got the tact
I live above my means in fact
Oh no
I'd never do that
I'd never do that
I'd never do that
I'd never do that
And, last but not least, U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own.
Tough, you think you've got the stuff
You're telling me and anyone
You're hard enough
You don't have to put up a fight
You don't have to always be right
Let me take some of the punches
For you tonight
Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go in alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
We fight all the time
You and I...that's alright
We're the same soul
I don't need...I don't need to hear you say
That if we weren't so alike
You'd like me a whole lot more
Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
I know that we don't talk
I'm sick of it all
Can you hear me when I
Sing, you're the reason I sing
You're the reason why the opera is in me...
Where are we now?
I've got to let you know
A house still doesn't make a home
Don't leave me here alone...
And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
Sometimes you can't make it
The best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
Woah. Holy moody lyrics, batman.

currently I would say the following lyrics:
"F*ck your power trip and
F*ck your attitude and
F*ck your bloated ego too
F*ck your history, Your tragedy, Your misery
But most of all...F*ck you"
Brian j.
This reminds me of one of mine, "F*ck you I won't do what ya told me!" The rebel in me, I hate being told what to do.

This song is pure magic, Tear in Your Hand by Tori, which just inspired me to write my own words, "music is the sixth sense".
All the world just stopped now
So you say you don’t wanna stay together any more
Let me take a deep breath babe
If you need me, me and Neil’ll be hangin’ out with the Dream King
Neil says hi by the way
I don’t believe you’re leaving cause
Me and Charles Manson like the same ice cream
I think it’s that girl
And I think there’re pieces of me you’ve never seen
Maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen well
All the world is
All I am
The black of the the blackest ocean
And that tear in your hand
All the world is danglin’ danglin’ danglin’ for me darlin'
You don’t know the power that you have with that
Tear in your hand
That tear in your hand
Maybe I ain’t used to
Maybes smashing in a cold room
Cutting my hands up
Everytime I touch you
Maybe it’s time to wave goodbye now
Time to wave goodbye now
Caught a ride with the moon
I know I know you well
Well better than I used to
Haze all clouded up my mind
In the daze of the why it could’ve never been
So you say and I say you know you’re full of wish
And your ’baby baby baby babies’
I tell you there’s peices of me you’ve never seen
Maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen well
All the world is
All I am
The black of the blackest ocean
And that tear in your hand
All the world is danglin’ danglin’ danglin’ for me darlin’
You don’t know the power that you have with that
Tear in your hand
That tear in your hand
Reading these I realize Tori uses "well"! :D This song is mine because of my ex fiance. When we broke up it was me that left but it was 50/50, half of me wanted to stay but that wasn't enough. So hard. Right away he started up with a mutual friend and this devastated me. I lost him, a friend, my home, my cats, it was such an awful time.
I saw Tori at the Wang here in Boston which is a beautiful old theater. When she did this song I cried and cried, the acoustics in that place are amazing and the intimacy staggering. It was evident that most were extremely moved. Her talent is extraordinary. The way the lighting was during that song just added to its gravity. :( I felt exorcized, hehe.
Tori is so imaginitive and I identify with that so much. Neil's music and catching a ride with the moon are brilliant escapes. Then there is her delivery which is so emotive.

Good for you. I can identify with that feeling too because I lived in a very small blue collar town with insane neighbors. I always felt like, "What am I doing here? I don't belong here." I'm just an hour away from there but I might as well be on another planet. I'm so much happier now. I think back to myself then and I think "That poor little girl." I was a very unhappy child.

the one song that lyrically has always seem to me as genius is "Innuendo" by Queen:
"While the sun hangs in the sky and the desert has sand
While the waves crash in the sea and meet the land
While there's a wind and the stars and the rainbow
Till the mountains crumble into the plain
Oh yes we'll keep on tryin'
Tread that fine line
Oh we'll keep on tryin yeah
Just passing our time
While we live according to race, colour or creed
While we rule by blind madness and pure greed
Our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion
Through the eons, and on and on
Oh yes we'll keep on tryin'
We'll tread that fine line
Oh oh we'll keep on tryin'
Till the end of time
Till the end of time
Through the sorrow all through our splendour
Don't take offence at my innuendo
You can be anything you want to be
Just turn yourself into anything you think that you could ever be
Be free with your tempo be free be free
Surrender your ego be free be free to yourself
Oooh ooh-
If there's a God or any kind of justice under the sky
If there's a point if there's a reason to live or die
If there's an answer to the questions we feel bound to ask
Show yourself - destroy our fears - release your mask
Oh yes we'll keep on trying
Hey tread that fine line
Yeah we'll keep on smiling yeah (yeah yeah)
And whatever will be will be
We'll keep on trying
We'll just keep on trying
Till the end of time
Till the end of time
Till the end of time"

My choice for the one song that fits an event in my life might just surprise you: "Sara" by Fleetwood Mac. Well, the song choice part might surprise you; the artist should be no shocker. Not only is "Sara" a devastatingly beautiful song, it also lends itself very well to the events, emotions, and thoughts I experienced around the time when my cousin (coincidentally named Sara) committed suicide. Understandably, because of this, "Sara" affects me in a different way than any other song could ever hope to-Fleetwood Mac or otherwise.
Sara Elizabeth was barely 21 when she ended her life by taking a dose of cyanide. I spent an entire week and a half with her when we were little back in 1992; she was close to both my sister Kim and I. Sara was an incredibly sweet person...Every time that I hear the song "Sara" my heart is broken.
The opening chords of "Sara" are slightly ethereal and somehow have hopefulness about them. Then...
Wait a minute, baby...
Stay with me a while
Said you'd give me light
But you never told me about the fire
Oh...The times that I miss. Whenever I sense the loss of my cousin...My mind begged for her to stay for so long...I always was happy to see Sara, but I never had any idea of the pain she felt throughout the past few years of her life or the legacy of pain that her actions would leave...
At this point, I bite my lip, close my eyes, and take a deep breath. The rhythm section kicks in. Now the soaring feeling from opening swoops down as Stevie's clunky piano playing starts, hitting me in the chest.
Drowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
But now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter what for
When build your house
Then call me home
Sara was such an incredibly loved person...The scores of people who came together to celebrate her life were a testament to that. Yet now I realize that her well-meaning parents and immediate family sometimes were so forcefully loving that she felt smothered; above all she was very loved. But no one could ever have made her understand how loved and cherished she was. Many people yearn to be as loved as she was.
I try and try, time and again, to convince myself that why Sara ended her life isn’t important; that she is gone now and I should just get on with my life. I’m still grieving some over a year later...every day in my mind, I call out to her. Tell her that if she wants to give me a sign or something-anything-I’ll be ready. Whenever she has settled her affairs in the great beyond, I’ll be waiting to hear from her.
“Sara” only gets more beautiful at this point-a filigree of guitars begin dancing at the song’s edges. Pure-sounding voices rise and fall somewhere in the background.
And he was just like a great dark wing
Within the wings of a storm
I think I had met my match-he was singing
And undoing the laces
Undoing the laces
The truthfulness and validity of these words really smarts. Sara had a boyfriend who was also a minor criminal and a drug dealer. Despite all of his shortcomings, this guy really loved Sara. Trouble is, both he and Sara had heavy emotional problems. Both needed someone stable. Still, easy as it would be to blame the fact that this guy broke up with her for her suicide, Sara had her own problems. She was at the emotional maturity level or a 13-year-old, as was evidenced by the childish scrapbooks she made (which her parents painfully had out for everyone to view). Her boyfriend really was the great dark wing within the wings of a storm.
With this boyfriend, Sara was sure that she had found her match, her soul mate, the man she would marry and spend the rest of her life with. He was charming and good-looking but not good for her. He pressured her to do certain things and ended up undoing the laces of her already scattered life.
The voices in the background sway and bend before disappearing altogether. The rhythm section steadily becomes more prominent and the piano playing returns, along with the tide of the backing vocals. A vocal flourish from Miss Nicks adds to the atmosphere before...
Said Sara, you’re the poet in my heart
Never change, never start
But now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter what for
When you build your house
Call me home
My cousin was never my muse, but she is something that I always carry around with me. In her life, she was a very moral, religious person and was often pressured by her peers to be less so. Sara confided in my mother that she didn’t have boyfriends like everyone else because the boys weren’t interested when they found out she was going to stay a virgin until marriage. How sad that a sweet, smart and attractive girl like her couldn’t find love. She held her ground and maintained her values until she fell in love with the man who was eventually her undoing. And I’m still waiting for the time I’ll see her again.
Hold on
The night is coming and the starling flew for days
I’d stay home at night all the time
I’d go anywhere, anywhere
Ask me and I’m there, ‘cause I care
There’s a slight echo effect used in that part; it really enhances the passion in Miss Nicks’ voice.
Now...I wonder what I could do if I could turn back the clock. The lines, “hold on/the night is coming and the starling flew for days” have an undeniable resonance with me. The first line reminds me both of death as the “night” coming over Sara and also the “night” as the grief and sorrow washing over my being. The way Miss Nicks sings, “hold on” is very comforting to me. It lets me know that I will come out OK and in one piece.
“I’d stay home at night all the time/I’d go anywhere, anywhere/Ask me and I’m there, ‘cause I care.” Once again the meaning is twofold. I loved Sara so that I would have stayed home at night for her. But Sara was all the way in Michigan and I in California. I also had big time health problems to deal with and I still feel guilty...because I cared and I don’t think she knew I did.
This part also expresses how I grieved perfectly. I was like a little starling going against the wind. I flew for days, looking for answers and withdrawing into myself, becoming isolated as I flew high above everyone else trying to meet her halfway between heaven and earth somehow. All the while languishingly wanting to know that Sara understood how much she meant to me...
Drowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
But now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter anymore
If you build your house
Then please call me
And it keeps on going...My mind is haunted by what happened and keeps repeating everything over and over...The song gains power.
Sara, you’re the poet in my heart
Never change, and don’t you ever stop
Now it’s gone
No, it doesn’t matter anymore
When you build your house
I’ll come by
It all just becomes even more poignant...”Sara” becomes even better each time I hear it.
For a split second after the “I’ll come by”, when the harmony of the backing vocals is just hypnotic, “ahh...” And Christine’s singing of “crazy....” gently glides into the mix. Then, “Sara...” is sung in unison, and an endless number of Stevies singing her name rise and fall gently. “Crazy...” is sung again...So is “Sara...”
A muted Miss Nicks sings “Ooh and there’s a heartbeat and it never really died...” So true... “Dreaming...” and then, “never really died...” find their way into the song. “Would you swallow all your pride...”? From the left, “oh oh oh.” From the right, “would you speak a little louder.” Another “oh oh oh.” A barely audible “dreaming...” is there again. Then, crystal clear from somewhere behind you, “All I ever wanted was to know that you’d been dreaming...” Lastly, only if you turn the volume up can you hear, “there’s a heartbeat and it never really died...” The song is over.
Stevie Nicks had her own reasons for writing “Sara;” I have my own reasons for my reading of it. Yet it holds a common thread, I think: “Sara” is a song about a little girl who is gone now; we miss her; we regret our actions; we want to be with us again; we love her. The loss of “Sara” was an event that shattered whatever innocence we had and we’ll never be the same again. A part of us died then.
When I listen to music, I surrender myself to it. Live through it. Relate to it. That’s just the way I like to enjoy my music. Stevie Nicks’ “Sara” has an effect on me incomparable to any other song-it is as if I’m on a different plane of existence when hearing “Sara.” I like to think my first hearing "Sara" not long before my cousin ended her life was meant to be. I can’t listen to it too much because the emotions are so strong, but when I can the experience is life affirming.

I'm so sorry about your cousin, Justin. :( What you wrote was very moving and I can tell heartfelt. ((((hugs)))))
A guy I dated in high school committed suicide a few weeks ago. It was devastating, even though I hadn't seen him in 3-4 years. In fact, that made it even harder.

I felt so bad for his parents....they've really gone through a lot over the years. Aaron (that was his name) left behind a young daughter; I hope she can give them the strength they need.

My songs:
There are several, not all Fleetwood Mac songs..
Everybody's Talking from Midnight Cowboy-Nillson sings it:
Everybody's talking at me
I don't hear a word they're saying
Only the echoes of my mind
For What It's Worth-Buffalo Springfield
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong..
Stevie's song Storms
But never have I been a blue calm sea
I've always been a storm, always been a storm
Stevie's song Jane
Such a hard life
Such a little girl
She could look a challenge right between the eyes

Justin, I cannot begin to tell you how moved I was when I read your amazingly eloquent post about your cousin Sara and "Sara" last night. I couldn't bring myself to say anything at the time because I knew it wouldn't be good enough. Thank you so much for sharing with all of us; I really appreciate that you did. I'm glad that you gave us all the opportunity to look at that song through another set of eyes. I know I'll never look at it the exact same way I did before when I listen to it from now on. I am truly sorry for your loss.
And Krista, I am so sorry about Aaron. I can understand why it would be harder to take when you haven't talked to him in awhile. The situation reminds me a little bit of my Grandfather's death. I wish I could give both you and Justin a big hug! :)

Thank you so much, Hillary. :xoxo: I had all of that stuff swirling around in my head for months about "Sara"...It makes me feel really good to know that now others will understand what a great person my cousin was...And maybe realize how much pain ending one's own life can cause...I had to write all of that...

BLUE by Joni Mitchell
Blue, songs are like tattoos
You know I've been to sea before
Crown and anchor me
Or let me sail away
Hey Blue, here is a song for you
Ink on a pin
Underneath the skin
An empty space to fill in
Well there're so many sinking now
You've got to keep thinking
You can make it thru these waves
Acid, booze, and ass
Needles, guns, and grass
Lots of laughs, lots of laughs
Everybody's saying that hell's the hippest way to go
Well I don't think so
But I'm gonna take a look around it though
Blue, I love you
Blue, here is a shell for you
Inside you'll hear a sigh
A foggy lullaby
There is your song from me
You'll rescue me right?
In the exact same way they never did..
I'll be happy right?
When your healing powers kick in
You'll complete me right?
Then my life can finally begin
I'll be worthy right?
Only when you realize the gem I am?
But this won't work now the way it once did
And I won't keep it up even though I would love to
Once I know who I'm not then I'll know who I am
But I know I won't keep on playing the victim
-- Alanis Morissette, "Precious Illusions."
I think we are all looking for someone to save us.

A while ago at kareoke , someone sang The Needle the Damage Done.
The line, "but every junkie is like the setting sun"....boy....
I love Neil Young, and I love that song. Very poignant and sad, Neil just has a way with words and melodies that just make you ache they're so heartfelt. Thanks for posting Janet.

I was going through old threads and came across this one -- obviously, I was compelled to post in it. And if Justin can write a cathartic post, then so can I. ;)
My song of choice tonight will be Poe's "Haunted," from the album of the same name. When Poe's father, Ted Danielewski died, she made an album to help her through the coping process while her brother, Mark Z. Danielewski, wrote a book (House of Leaves). Poe (real name Annie Danielewski) was rummaging through some old tapes and found recordings of her father's lectures (he was an acting teacher). Poe used these tapes in nearly every song on her album, providing an eerie and deeply personal and effective feel to it. Annie claims she had resurrected a ghost. And in a way, listening to the album resurrects ghosts of my own.
The song starts with banging drums and a guitar and Poe chanting "Ba-da pa pa" repeatedly, echoing Daisy's chant in House of Leaves. From page 314: [Daisy is] quietly singing to no one in particular words no one else could understand-'ba. dah. ba-ba.'" This occurs after a huge scene of death in the house.
This brings me to where I connect it to my life. I had known Lucas since 5th grade. He was sorta dorky, and I have no idea how we initially became friends, but somehow we did. Lucas had a heart condition - exactly what, I forget, but he nearly died upon birth. Luckily, the doctors pulled through, as did Lucas, and he continued to live for sixteen years. Among those years, we had gotten to know each other pretty well. He was getting tired of his family life, as his mother and step-father wouldn't let him do anything he wanted. He had to listen to Christian music, he couldn't play video games, etc. It was a miracle when Lucas' mom let him go trick-or-treating with a friend of ours & me one year.
The only way Lucas could really escape was through his friends. He would always call me. Always. And he'd always want to come over, because he could do everything here that he couldn't do there. And his mother had no idea.
Going back to the repitition of "ba-da pa pa" and Mark's elaboration of it, describing it as a language which no one understands, makes me think of how people often become disoriented when they hear of death. They can't form words, they can't think straight. I certainly couldn't. One night in February, my mother came down the stairs to my room crying with the phone in hand. Lucas had died. She handed the phone to me, and Lucas' mom, Ginger, told me. I couldn't find anything to say. I didn't know what to say. I didn't know how to react. The only thing I could do was repeat words or phrases over in my head. No. No. He can't be dead. No. (ba-da pa pa. ba-da pa pa.)
Come here... pretty please
Can you tell me where I am?
You -- Won't you say something
I need to get my bearings
I'm lost & these shadows keep on changing
What the hell kind of alternate universe was I transported to? Nothing was wrong with Lucas... and everything that I had held as truth had shifted. The shadows changed.
And I'm haunted
By the lives that I have loved
And actions I have hated
I'm haunted
By the lives that wove the web
Inside my haunted head
The Friday before Lucas died, when we were riding home on the bus, he had told me that he wasn't feeling good. I was okay with that. People don't feel good sometimes -- that's perfectly normal. Shift. Lucas told me not to let him fall asleep. I was a little freaked out by that, but I figured he didn't want to fall asleep and miss his stop. Shift.
That morning, we had World History together. We were "working" on a worksheet. Only not. We were talking about nothing in particular, trying desperately to inject some history into it to appease our (awesome) teacher. It ended up being a conversation about Robespierre and how Lucas was going to become ruler of a country and have a Reign of Terror. So I said that when I become ruler of my country, I'm building a guillotine in my backyard and he can send everyone there. That was the last full conversation I had with him.
To this day, I am haunted by those memories.
Ba-da pa pa...
Ba-da pa pa...
Ba-da pa pa...
Ba-da pa pa...
More repitition. Poe's delivery of these is the same as they are the first time around at the beginning of the song. She's quiet, unsure, afraid. She's still dealing with the loss.
Don't cry, there's always a way
Here in November in this house of leaves we'll pray
Please, I know it's hard to believe
To see a perfect forest through so many splintered trees
You and me and these shadows keep on changing
Poe's telling herself not to show her true emotions. She's telling herself that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. When someone close dies, there's the initial feeling of disbelief and confusion... and then it all eventually makes sense. Another change in the shadows.
And I'm haunted
By the lives that I have loved
And actions I have hated
I'm haunted
By the lives that wove the web
Inside my haunted head
Hallways... always
I'll always want you
I'll always need you
I'll always love you
And I will always miss you
I will always remember Lucas. I will always want to see him at his locker. I will always miss him. While Annie sings the previous four lines in a sort of whisper (about as much of a whisper as you can manage while still singing audibly at least), the last line is sung with force. It's as if she's calling out to the ghost that is haunting her and confronting it. She's telling the ghost that she'll always treasure the memories it left behind. She's telling the ghost that it will always be with her. And that she will always long for those memories to return.
Ba-da pa pa...
Ba-da pa pa...
Ba-da pa pa...
Ba-da pa pa...
Again with the repetition. This time, they're chanted with more volume. She's come to terms with it, but she still has doubt -- hence, repetition. He's dead. I know he's dead. But why does he have to be dead? Why can't he just come back to life? At the wake, when I looked at Lucas for one of the last times of my life, I had an overwhelming feeling that he was going to spring up out of the casket. I had a feeling that he wasn't dead. I had a feeling that it was all a joke.
Come here
No I won't say please
One more look at the ghost
Before I'm gonna make it leave
Come here
I've got the pieces here
Time to gather up the splinters
Build a casket for my tears
Poe sings this verse with a very different tone than the rest of the song, and she's not quite singing it. She's sort of saying it, with real desperation in her voice. She's asserting the ghost. She's telling it that she's tired of feeling the way she's been feeling and that she thinks it's time for her to move on. But she knows she can't.
It's commonplace for the mourning at a funeral to walk by the casket one more time before the deceased leaves. As much as I didn't want to, I felt that I had to. I had to see him one last time before I couldn't any more. I cannot forget how he looked in that casket.
Throughout the funeral, I didn't cry. I couldn't. I think the thought of being in the same room as one of my best friends as he lay in a casket without life acted as a numbing agent on me. I don't remember much about the funeral service. I just remember still feeling shock, but also a feeling of wanting to move on. Lucas wouldn't have wanted me to cry over him. As much as it killed me to do so, I had to confront this in order to move on. I'm gathering up the splinters and building a casket for my tears. I'm taking these feelings and I'm putting them away. I can't dwell on this (even though I have, and I think that's obvious if you've made it this far). I didn't cry until I got home and really thought about things. I don't know if my casket held up. I don't think it did.
I'm haunted
(By the lives that I have loved)
I'm haunted
(By the promises I've made)
I'm haunted
By the hallways in this tiny room
The echos there of me and you
The voices that are carrying this tune
Ba-da pa pa...
Poe echoes herself as she fades out. Echoes play an important role in "Haunted." It's repetition, unwillingness to accept a change in the shadows, unwillingness to accept death. The echoes (remnants) of the memories left behind still haunt her. The fact that they're carrying the tune of the song signify that she's using the memory for her own gain. The memories of those we love who are no longer with us still drive us. They still affect us. They still show us things.
She repeats "Ba-da pa pa" again, until she fades out completely. Just as she's started the song with them to signify her not accepting the death, she's ending with them to signify that she's finally come to terms with it. She's come to terms with the ghost, she's come to terms with her feelings, her memories.
A while after Lucas died, I actually felt as though I was being haunted. I felt that someone somewhere was watching me. It was a strange feeling. Very strange. If you've ever felt the same way - as if someone you have lost was watching over you - then you know how eerie it feels. I think he's haunting me to this day.
Ted: What is it Annie?
Poe: You think I'll cry? I won't cry! My heart will break before I cry! I will go mad.
