At Least 5 Dead, 2 Wounded In Nightclub Shooting
Witnesses: Alleged Gunman Went Onto Stage, Fired Shots
POSTED: 10:32 pm EST December 8, 2004
UPDATED: 12:33 am EST December 9, 2004
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- At least five people died and two others were wounded after a shooting at a Columbus nightclub on Wednesday night, NBC 4 reported.
The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. at Alrosa Villa, located at 5055 Sinclair Road.
Two members of the heavy metal band Damageplan were reportedly shot and killed, including Dimebag Darrell, formerly with the band Pantera, NBC 4's David Wayne reported. The other band member's name was not released. The alleged gunman also died at the scene, Wayne reported.
Shortly after the band began playing its first song, a man reportedly ran onto the stage and began shooting, according to a witness who identified himself as Sean. Some members of the audience reportedly thought the man running onto the stage with a gun was part of the band's act, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.
Witnesses said that several shots were fired at the band. Witnesses said that a bouncer at the club tackled the alleged gunman before that person was shot and killed. It was unclear as to whom shot the alleged gunman.
NBC 4 reported that of the surviving victims, one person was in critical condition while the other was in fair condition. Several others were treated at the scene, suffering from various injuries.
Alrosa Villa is a popular north Columbus nightspot for young adults, featuring rock and heavy metal bands, NBC 4 reported.
According to the band's Web site, Damageplan was touring nationally. It performed in Buffalo, N.Y., on Tuesday night and had a concert scheduled in Flint, Mich., on Thursday.
Damageplan featured former Pantera artists Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. The pair were joined by vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bobzilla, according to their Web site.

That is just horrible. It is kind of weird that it happened on the anniversary of John Lennon's death, too
I wonder what the motive was?

is who the hell it was that decided to take a life...The news-heads keep saying the shooter had issues with D.B., So just who the hell is he? I know only one person who had issues with Darrell (And his older brother & drummer Vinnie Paul) and that would be the former singer of Pantera Phil Anselmo, But surely it wasnt Phil (At least I hope it wasnt).
I still haven't be able to sleep because this is just too damn shocking & FUBAR...
"Well I guess
You took my youth
I gave it all away
Like the birth of a

This love would end in rage
And when she died

The pride within my soul
You left me incomplete
All alone as the
Memories now unfold
Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the
Cemetary gates..."

Out of every horiffic event you usually find somebody that's a genuine hero.. This officer seems to be that person, although, as silly as it is, I'm sure all he feels is guilt for not being there to stop anybody getting hurt or killed at all.
If it is Vinnie Paul then he will feel like ****, most likely wishing he could swap places and let his bro live.. It's not something he's ever gonna get over... :distress:

I never understood why people have to kill an entertainer when all they are doing is to try to make us smile for a bit and forget how f**ked up the world is when we attend their shows/buy their music/etc.
Really disturbing is the yet to be proved statement that this murderer said he killed DBD because he broke up Pantera! Gee, What is the world f**kin' coming to if that was the case? Phil is happy in SJR (Super Joint Ritual) & the Abbotts were happy with Damageplan (I think Rex was happy in the band Down, If I remember correctly)...

John Lennon is my Dad's Stevie Nicks. He absolutely idolized him. Not in a scary way but in homage. And my Dad can <b>sing</b> though his anxiety would never allow him to do that in public. Similarly he <i>loved</i> The Beatles like I love Fleetwood Mac. But he most identified with John Lennon, like I LOVE FM but I most identify with Stevie Nicks.
He made me a music afficionado. So for anyone to desecrate this day in such a way is extra tragic for me personally. It scares me that it may have been intentional. If it was or was not it does not make the tragedy less abominable. But if it was intentional it makes at atrocious beyond expression...
I'm always so grateful for the musicians who are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to deliver to Us the music that keeps us ALL going. None of them ever think they are putting their life on the line like this, why would they have until now?
Thank you, musicians for what you do. We know you sacrifice a lot to go out there and play for us. I do not take that for granted. I say an extra prayer for your safety today, even though I know that I should not have to.
Please, people, peace...

the same goes for my Mother, She loved John...I can remember when we heard he died and it tore a hole in my Mom's heart.
DBD is the metal-head's John Lennon...All one has to do is go to metal music websites to see the outpouring of love & the heartbreak/grief his passing has caused. He was a musician who enjoyed playing music, hanging/partying with fans (He was never above the fans!) more than the whole "I am a rockstar please adore me" attitude.

By ASSOCIATED PRESS COLUMBUS, Ohio USA - The man who shot former Pantera guitarist ''Dimebag'' Darrell Abbott and three other men to death at a nightclub was obsessed with the heavy metal band and made bizarre accusations against the group, a one-time friend said.
Nathan Gale apparently believed Pantera musicians were trying to steal his identity and the lyrics to songs he had written, former friend Jeramie Brey told The Columbus Dispatch in Friday's editions.
Gale, 25, charged the stage Wednesday at a show by Abbott's new band, Damageplan, and gunned down four people including Abbott before a police officer shot him to death. Two others were wounded.
Investigators said they may never know Gale's motive. Some witnesses said he yelled accusations that the influential heavy metal guitarist broke up Pantera, but police had not verified those reports.
Brey and former friend Dave Johnson said they had become frightened by Gale's behavior and distanced themselves from him several years ago. By that time, Johnson said, Gale had begun talking and laughing to himself and once appeared to be holding an imaginary dog.
"He used to be Pantera's No. 1 fan and has liked them for as long as I've known him," Johnson told the newspaper. "After a while something happened. He just kind of snapped. He went from being a cool guy to being a guy you didn't want to be around."
Johnson said he met Gale, known as Nate, in the late 1990s through a mutual friend in their hometown of Marysville, about 25 miles northwest of Columbus. They shared a love of rock music, held jam sessions and attended concerts together.
Brey recalled that Gale once showed up at his house with some songs he had written, but the words appeared to be copied from Pantera. Gale told Brey he planned to sue Pantera over the lyrics and for stealing his identity.
An imposing figure at 6-foot-3, Gale had made people uneasy at a Marysville tattoo parlor, staring and locking them into conversations about heavy metal music.
When he played offensive line for the semi-pro Lima Thunder football team, he psyched himself up before games by piping Pantera music into his headphones, coach Mark Green said.
"He seemed like a normal guy you would meet any other day," said Anthony Bundy, 20, who lived on the same block as Gale. "He was a keep-to-yourself type of person. He was real quiet."
Hours before the shootings, Gale got into an argument with a worker at the tattoo studio over some equipment he wanted the studio to order for him. He later angrily walked out of the shop.
The worker, Bo Toler, said he thought Gale had come to the tattoo parlor because he wanted somebody to hang out with. "I just thought he was quiet. I thought he had low-self esteem because of his thick glasses," Toler said.
Gale had had minor run-ins with police since 1997 but wasn't considered a troublemaker, authorities said.
He served in the Marines in North Carolina until November 2003, when he was discharged after less than half of the typical four-year stint, Marine spokeswoman Gunnery Sgt. Kristine Scarber said. She declined to explain the discharge, citing privacy rules.
Gale's mother, Mary Clark, did not return phone messages seeking comment.
The violence at the Alrosa Villa club came just after the opening chords by Texas-based Damageplan, the band formed by Abbott and his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, after they left Pantera. Gale dodged two band members, grabbed Darrell Abbott and shot him at least five times in the head, witnesses and police said.
In less than five minutes, Gale had also killed Erin Halk, 29, a club employee who loaded band equipment; fan Nathan Bray, 23; and band bodyguard Jeff Thompson, 40.
Two other band employees, tour manager Chris Paluska and drum technician John Brooks, remained hospitalized Friday with bullet wounds. Paluska was listed in serious condition and Brooks in good condition.
Vinnie Paul Abbott thanked fans for their support in a statement the band released Friday.
"With all his greatness and accomplishments on the guitar, DIME will be missed more for his giving personality, charisma, caring for others, love and most of all his HEART!! Twice as big as the state of TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!!," Abbott said.

Magazine highlighted band's feud
A UK magazine printed an interview two weeks before former Pantera guitarist Darrell Abbott was shot and killed, saying he should be "severely beaten". Metal Hammer published the interview with singer Phil Anselmo, who featured in Pantera with Abbott.
Abbott was one of five people killed in Ohio as his band Damageplan performed. A spokesman for publisher Future said it was "really sorry" to hear of the deaths, adding: "We extend our sympathies to the families involved."
Abbott, nicknamed "Dimebag", and three others were shot when a man stormed the stage at the Alrosa Villa Club in Columbus and began firing at the band and crowd.
Nathan Gale, 25, was then shot and killed by a police officer who arrived shortly after the first shots were fired. The other men killed were named as club employee Erin Halk, 29, fan Nathan Bray, 23, and Jeff Thompson, 40, who was affiliated with the band. Two other people were taken to hospital following the incident but their condition is unknown.
Anselmo, who is now lead singer for Superjoint Ritual, was interviewed in the Christmas edition of the magazine, talking about the acrimonious break-up of Pantera.
No motive has yet been established for the killings, although Columbus police have said witnesses had described hearing Gale accuse Abbott of being behind the split of Pantera.
"He deserves to be beaten severely," Anselmo told the magazine, which is not published in the US.
The magazine's cover features Anselmo brandishing two knives at the camera. Pantera were one of the most popular metal bands of the early 1990s, topping the US album charts and getting a Grammy nomination for 1994 release Far Beyond Driven.
A spokesman for Future said it had no further comment to make.
Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne was one of many in the rock world who paid tribute to Abbott. The Black Sabbath frontman, who often toured with the 38-year-old, said: "I'm absolutely beside myself with grief. "I can't for the life of me understand why someone would do this."
What a tough guy Anselmo is huh? You don't go around making comments like that in public... Hope he's full of remorse..

judgement on Phil just yet, Seems the article was one thing but here's another:
"Philip Anselmo's (SUPERJOINT RITUAL, DOWN, ex-PANTERA) friend "J" has posted the following message on the official DOWN forum in regards to the tragic death of DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott:
"I don't have a big official statement. I do have a lot of inside knowledge on the PANTERA feud from Philip's side and tonight he gave me the green light to let everyone else in on what I know. He trusts me to do this, and I take 100 percent responsibility for anything that is inaccurate, but I'm confident you all know I'm not going to touch on this subject unless it's from the heart. He didn't even give me any specifics except for the final part of this post... he just wants me to tell people what I know to be true.
"Philip loved Darrell like a brother, always. They accomplished things together that most wouldn't even dare to dream. None of us can know what it's like to be riding such a big machine, it changes the face of music and brings joy millions of people's lives around the globe. The rewards are big, but the stress is unimaginable if things don't go perfectly. Yes, PANTERA broke up and there was a lot of ****-talking through the media. There are two people on this board who would periodically ask me about what's going to happen with PANTERA in the future. I told them each time that I don't know when, but I'm 100 percent sure that we will see PANTERA together again. I told them that when PANTERA does get back together, you will know somebody who never lost faith, not for a second. Why did I tell them this? Because I know Philip loves those guys and when he was ready, he would reach out to them and try to make it work again. I had the feeling that one morning (afternoon maybe), all the 'Cowboys From Hell' boys would just roll out of the rack and say 'Let's go!'
"Of all the time I've spent with Rex and Philip, I never badgered them about PANTERA, but the subject did come up every once in a while. As for Rex, he would refer to the state of things simply as 'silly nonsense.' All I ever got out of Philip was something like 'Nyaaaa... I just don't feel like sitting down and writing PANTERA riffs right now.' ... and that's it! No crazy accusations, name-calling, or carrying on. As a matter of fact, in the middle of all the heat, Philip described Vinnie as 'the perfect drummer' and that Vinnie could drum more perfect than a drum machine if he so chose. What he said of Dime, he also repeated tonight. 'The best of the best.'
"It's sad that the media would irritate the situation so much. Countless times, Kate and I would listen in on Phil doing interviews. Always, always, always, the jackals wanted PANTERA dirt. Sometimes Philip would give it to them, sometimes he would not. However every single time I was there, he expressed his love for, and wished luck to Vinnie and Dime but that was somehow left out of the final print more times than not. I was at Philip's house a few weeks ago and I informed him that I handle the official PANTERA site now, and he asked me if I talked to Dime. I said, 'No, when was the last time YOU talked to him?' With a sigh, he said 'Three years.' Not a '****in right 3 years' not a 'Yeah three years and it's gonna be three more'... but the dude was genuinely disappointed about the situation. I could tell... the time to patch things up was drawing near.
"There's more I want to share, but it's almost 5AM right now, and I just managed to hold myself together long enough to get that out.
"Philip isn't hiding out or waiting for the right moment to speak, he's in Texas right now searching for answers to this tragedy the best he can. There was one thing he asked of me, that I humbly bring to you all:
"'Darrell my brother. The best of the best.' — Philip H Anselmo"

"Philip isn't hiding out or waiting for the right moment to speak, he's in Texas right now searching for answers to this tragedy the best he can. There was one thing he asked of me, that I humbly bring to you all:
"'Darrell my brother. The best of the best.' — Philip H Anselmo"
Well if thats the case then the "feud" and all the other stuff is all just PR bull**** (Bit like Axl Rose acting like a tough guy in the public eye just to drum up some news about his GNR "tribute band")..
I think most artists and many fans, not necessarily just Pantera fans, are searching for answers to this.. It could have happened to any artist on any stage and it's gonna scare a lot of people out of touring in the near future I think. I also think it was just a matter of time before it happened to somebody, somewhere.. The world has gone so crazy and it's no longer safe to bring joy into peoples lives by entertaining.. When I said about it only able to happen in America in an earlier post I meant storming the stage with a gun... The sick minded can strike anywhere... I blame George Harrison's illness and subsequent death on physical stress triggered by the stabbing of him in the UK a few years back (I'm listening to "Your Love Is Forever" by George as I write this actually)..

ya gotta ask, How would a "mentally disturbed" person (Such as this f**ktard triggerman) take Phil's words, Would he take 'em as blowing steam for the PR or take 'em as a command to hurt and/or kill:
"He would attack me, vocally. And just knowing that he was so much smaller than me <B>I could kill him</B> like a f**kin' piece of vapor, you know, he would turn into vapour — his chin would, at least, if I f**kin' smacked it. And he knows that. The world should know that. So physically, of course, he deserves to be <B>beaten severely.</B>"
"But of course, that's criminal and I won't do such a thing… Really, I just let him prattle on.
"I think I proved clearly to everybody what I was in <B>PANTERA</B>! And what I was was a unique, unbelievably magnetic frontman that had not been around since the days of <B>Robert Plant</B> and <B>Ozzy Osbourne</B>. I am one in a million. . . I have staying power! I have a devoted following that would <B>do anything for me</B>! <B>Anything that I say</B>. And there's not many people that can say that, that are in my position."

I agree about George...I think the stabbing caused great stress that led to worse.
Btw, Axl's band does seem like a "GNR Tribute Band" doesnt it

the same goes for my Mother, She loved John...I can remember when we heard he died and it tore a hole in my Mom's heart.

Ugh, so senseles. Given my semi-paranoid nature I used to worry about this with Stevie or FM or anyone else and I'm so sad it has happened.

What a tough guy Anselmo is huh? You don't go around making comments like that in public... Hope he's full of remorse..
Apparently he has a well known heroin problem.

The funeral of one of the victims of a shooting at a rock concert has been held in Columbus, Ohio.
Nathan Bray, 23, was killed by gunman Nathan Gale who stormed the stage at a concert by heavy metal band Damageplan on Wednesday night.
Mourners said Mr.Bray was fired at as he went to the aid of Damageplan guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott after seeing he had been shot on stage.
Four people died, including "Dimebag" Abbott, before police shot Gale dead.
It is not yet known what the motive behind Gale's rampage was but one line of investigation is that he was seeking revenge for Abbott's role in the acrimonious split of the metal band Pantera, of which Abbott was a founding member.
A friend of Mr Bray's said the music fan had rushed onto the stage after seeing Abbott had been injured and attempted to resuscitate him.
Forever remembered
"When (Bray) looked up at the shooter that's when the shooter shot him," Adam Vanover said.
About 200 people attended the two-hour funeral service held on Saturday.
"He'll be in my heart forever," said family friend Sherri Jordan.
The other men killed have been named as club employee Erin Halk 29, and Jeff Thompson 40, who was affiliated with the band.
A band employee injured in the shooting, drum technician John Brooks, has been, released from hospital while tour manager Chris Paluska was said to be in a stable condition.

Nathan Bray is a hero in my eyes, He tried to save DBD's life and ended up losing his own life...Cheers to ya Nathan
The thing that is bothering me now over this is will this possibly affect Stevie's usual 'hand shaking' moments during the live performances of "Edge of Seventeen"? I have been to 3 FM show in '03/'04 & one Stevie solo show in 2001 and I have only been wanded/check at one of those shows (Dallas 03 at the American Airlines Center, Which had airport style metal detectors that you had to pass through.) and it seemed at the other 3 shows I could have walked in with a weapon without anyone knowing otherwise.
DBD's death really has changed my views on security for shows...

I'm glad Mr. Brooks has been released from the hospital and hope that Mr. Paluska will get to go home soon. This is all just too sad........
