View Full Version : cheesy subject

The cheesy subject is hugging...and why some people just can't get into it. I thought of this when we were talking about people who don't like taking pictures. Some of the same people I know who hate taking pictures are also extremely shy about hugging. I've never been able to understand this. People always tell me, "Well, Hillary, some people weren't raised in a really affectionate household, so they don't do that so freely like you do," and that makes sense to me to a degree. I can see why that would make someone shy for awhile, but once they see that their friends are into it, why can't they become accustomed to it as well? I don't mean to be insensitive about it; it's just hard for me to see how people can't get past that after they've been around hugging people (like me) for a few years or so. I have a friend who, to this day, acts shocked when I hug her, like she never saw it coming and can't believe that I would be hugging her. I keep waiting for the day when she gets used to it. Can anyone offer some new insight for me as to why some people have such a hard time with affectionate people? Is there anyone out there like the friend I mentioned who can explain her to me?

I'm not a very huggy/touchy/lovey type of person, so I don't really like to hug much. I do hug some of my family members and if I haven't seen them in awhile, friends.

My mom is the exact opposite, she's VERY huggy/touchy because her mom never showed her love as a child. :( She practically begs for it everytime I see her, but I just hate hugging and stuff. She KNOWS I love her and would give my life for her, I just don't wanna hug. LOL

It may be a personal space issue, or there could be something deeper there, such as people who've been molested as a child...they may not want to hug or touch people.

I'm from the South--we're serial huggers down here (do you suppose that's what got Bill Clinton in trouble?). Anyway, at least my Mom's family are all huggers. We hug each other hello & goodbye. Grown men hug one another when they see each other in my family with no shame or even consciousness about it. It's just the way we are. Although my longtime SO's family was also from the South--they weren't affectionate with one another in any way, shape, or form. So maybe it's not a Southern thing at all, but just a "my family" thing.

I am not a huggy kissy type myself. I really don't like it that much. However now this is going to sound weird but I have given hugs (if you could call it that) in receiving lines at wakes. If it is someone that I know that has lost someone close I usally put my arms around them as I say "I'm Sorry".

I didn't mean to be so morbid. :distress:

I'm a hugger and a kisser. When I greet someone, it's always a hug and a peck on the cheek (or a quick lip kiss). I don't do this to everyone, just my inner circle of friends and people I meet at the bar. :xoxo:

I'm not really touchy feely myself... Guess it goes back to a childhood without much attention from my parents. They both worked all the time and although my mother was quite "huggy", my father really didn't show any positive emotions towards me so I guess it's rubbed off on me. Doesn't help being an only child too I guess (I'm trying for the sympathy vote here! ).

Having said that as I get older I'm starting to get a little soft and I'm giving in to the occasional hugs 'n' stuff at the right times. ;)

sometimes i just don't feel like it when my friend does. But sometimes i'm very huggy. however, i don't really like when men i just met - or sometimes women - get all huggy. Like a third person you get introduced to through a friend? And maybe your friend is huggy, but you're not, so this new person thinks they get a hug from you even though you just met? But that is also based on a vibe thing. However, in the past few years i've gotten much more huggy (used to be shocked and dismayed by hugs :) ) but it's funny, now when i visit my best girlfriend from a long time, and give her a hug, it's kind of weird for her. She's not really huggy, either, although she is nice. And my best girlfriend in town hugs everyone. Everytime i see her she's trying to get some from me.
I guess i'm a "moody" hugger. :p

My late Father worked so I dont have many memories about him since I was only 7 yrs.old when he passed away...I do remember he gave us hugs/kisses.

Sounds cool Brian, I do have vague memories of my late father giving me a "firemans lift" and carrying me upside down when I was 6 or 7. Thats about it.

Hey, in some states I bet there's gotta be some asshole that would take their parents to court for child abuse if they got tickled as kids... Wouldn't surprise me one bit.. I bet those people could do with a REALLY big hug!

I'd never hug a person I had just met or didn't know. For all I know, they were hug-deprived as a child and will flip out. Only people I know. If I didn't like someone, I wouldn't hang around them (or let them hang around) long enough.

yeah, really. I'm always randomly meeting these friends of this one friend of mine, cause she is apparently friends with the whole town of Oakland and Berkeley. Anyway, there's been a few awkward moments. I'm like "nice to meet you" and stick out my hand as they dive for their hug   then they act like i'm really weird and totally insulted them  then i have to go..."well, i just met you". Anyway, I've had to perfect a bit of a distant stand and air during the whole "wall of hugs" moment that inevitably ensues...sheesh! But i'd rather give a sincere hug, or no hug at all, dammit!!

I am a huggy person. Never use to be as a child or teenager but when I started my own family, I wanted to make sure my kids knew they were loved so I would give them a daily hug and my husband is a huggy person too. My grown kids tease me about the hugging but I think they secretly love it. haha

As for pictures being taken. I enjoy taking family pictures but hate being in them. If I lost 20 lbs they can take a picture of me. haha One day my grandson did mention that grandma needs her picture taken sometimes so he can remember me when I am gone so even though I hate getting my picture taken, I do it for my grandson and my kids even though I am still shy about it.

It may be a southern hospitality thing. :shrug:Same here! I swear it is a Southern thing, though I know there are exceptions. I'm really loath to hug people I don't know; I usually have to know someone pretty well and for decent amount of time before I do it, but after that I am very huggy. Some people are more affectionate than I am around here. I remember one time I met a girl on the first day of a class we had together and we talked about what other classes we were taking for about three minutes, and then she hugged me. I was pretty shocked about that, since I had known her for three minutes!

I liked the cartoon you posted, Amber. I wish the U.S. was much more open about being affectionate. I have a professor who's from Congo, and she said she used to hold hands with her friends all the time when they were walking down the street together, and when she came to the U.S. and did that with her female friends, she was very surprised when people started saying she was a lesbian!

Anyway, I really enjoy reading all of y'all's responses to this.

I think it's, to a degree anyway, a socialogical thing. The French seem to hug and kiss each other all the time, yet us "Brits" are very reserved.. Sure if I know somebody well, at least a female I'll give a little hug maybe, if it's a guy a handshake will be enough for me.

Anybody I don't know well gets a smile and the regulation hello, maybe a handshake if I'm feeling generous

The states seems to have different reactions all over, The good old New York greeting of "what do you want?" springs to mind.. :]

The people that disturb me are not the ones that hug you indiscriminately on your first meeting but the ones that invade your personal "bubble" when you speak to them for the first time. They come too close, you move back and they follow you.... You move back again and they come too close again, it's like some odd game where they follow you about as you walk backwards..

And is it me or are they always the ones with bad breath that do this?

I work from home and rarely get to go to our corporate office which is about 90 minutes away. Several more employees work form home like I do and in fact, live out of state, so they're there even less than I am. So when we have a quarterly staff meeting, it's like one long hug fest around there. Probably 95% of our staff are native Southerners though. I'm wondering what the "Yankees" amongst us must think when we all start greeting one another with hugs??? At one job I had, the television station owner was an old southern "gentleman" and his big thing to do was to come in and give all the girls a little hug and a kiss on the cheek. There wasn't anything sexual about it, at least I don't think there was--at least it wasn't for me!!!!

All the ledgies I met last year before the Earls Court gigs were pretty cool so I think we would be OK.. We'd need to charter some transatlantic jet to get us UK and Euro Ledgies over. I should be hitting the sack but I'm staying on here until I've hit 600 (don't laugh at my inadequate amount) posts... I think I've got about 5 more replies to give!!!

fun place... 24 hour food thats for sure... Never knew what a BLT tasted like at 4am until I was in a casino at such an unhealthy hour last year... Btw, I've never gambled in a casino either, I just like to watch the various expressions of the gamblers.. Wnners and losers, and the fat assed ladies on the one armed bandits constantly pumping coins in one after the other amazes me every time.

I hug other people sometimes, too, but usually it's just to tick 'em off. Woot.So I'm not the only one who does that sometimes? Just to see people's eyes get all big. That has the potential to be lots of fun.

I do have a goal and by giving me a chance to reply I'm only two posts away from it (and my bed) and totally excited that I'm now only 9770 posts behind Dissention... :blob2:

LMAO!! I can see it now...we're all wearing FM related masks, the Stevie's chit chatting about the glitter and glam of the casino, while the Mick's are arguing over the splittage of the money...and of course, the Lindsey's are discussing the cycles of the games.

I love hugs. I was really clingy when I was little and then my mom started getting onto me for it so I stopped... and I guess I still have that need to be hugged a lot. I'm really picky about who I hug, though. Close friends, absolutely... acquaintances and people I don't know too well, it depends on the person and if they seem like they would be okay with it. I'm kinda shy so hugs can be icebreakers sometimes. Family hugs weird me out, though.

I'm wondering what the "Yankees" amongst us must think when we all start greeting one another with hugs???

I'm a Yank raised by a southerner! And most of my family are southerners! So, huggin' is cool in my book. I hug my daughter 20 times a day. Maybe more! Even when she don't want a hug, she's gettin' a hug. I get and give hugs to my mom. I haven't had a hug from my dad in ages. It's just the way he is, and I completely understand it. He wasen't raised in a very affectionate household.

I'm not really touchy feely myself...
:

Yeah right..pull the other one ;) :xoxo:

As for observing the French (and probably other Continentals-Serrat, you can jump in here) I have come to the conclusion, it's something they learn from birth..to give everyone hugs and kisses (yes, even foreigners)..which I think is not a bad thing, esp guys to guys, ie fathers to sons, brothers to brothers, friends to friends..it seems to make the men more approchable to each other.Having said that, I have had to endure many first encounters on a "huggy" level , which eventually you give in to, but not nesessarily agree with! Basically, it's a cultural thing.
Me...I'm def a huggy/kissy type , but not just with any old body, I'm VERY choosy....
