It may be a silly question, but I'm curious. I have just read in the "Stevie Picture I Hadn't Seen" thread that Jana Anderson's husband plays trumpet in Bette Midler's band. Isn't this a returning connection? Marty Hom, Cory, and I think Ray Lindsay too went to work for her. Is it all a coincidence? I'm asking it also because it would be a hoot to see Stevie perform with her for a duet.

I think Jill the wardrobe lady works with Bette too. She told me in London that she turned down Bette to travel with FM but that Kim Brakely wasn't with FM in Europe because she hadn't turned her down!

Taku's been with Bette for a quite a while (since Divine Miss Millennium), as have Ray Lindsey and the rest.
During the first leg of her Kiss My Brass tour, there was a Stevie mention in the tourbook in the Dolores DeLago (the Toast of Chicago!) section that says "She loved to party and according to close friend Stevie Nicks, '...if there was a vodka and an aquarium - Delores was there.'"
I think a duet between the two would be a disaster, though. I can't quite think of anyone who has enough presence and energy to stand next to that woman onstage, save maybe Miss Tina. But I'd die to see Stevie sing Big Noise From Winnetka, while putting peacock feathers in your mouth and twirling about the stage.
"I am the one they call the Big Noise
I'm looking fine and feeling sharp
I just blew in from Winettka, daddy-o
I'm gonna blow this joint apart
Got my Reeblechs, don't need high heels
My footwork is an art
You know the joint is jumping
My hip is throbbin'
And this is just the start..."

I think Bette looks amazing. She lost tons of weight back in 2000 and has kept it all off. Each time I saw her on the Kiss My Brass tour, I was amazed at how wonderful she looked. And she's still a show-stopper and perhaps the greatest live entertainer in history.

I don't think she's incredibly attractive looks-wise, but I think her demeanor and presence is ultra sexy, just as I think Camryn Manheim's presence and confidence makes her very sexy. Did you ever see The Rose? She was very sexy during many of those songs, IMO. :)

Anyway, Bette Midler should receive much more credit also as actress. She was perfect in "The Rose" (Sally Field was great in Norma Rae, but that Oscar was hers)and she is probably my favorite living comedian: in Scenes from the Mall she even overshadowed Woody Allen.

Sally Field didn't deserve that Oscar, plain and simple; Bette did. She should have won the damned thing just for the scene in the phone booth alone. But what made the performance even more impressive was the fact that it was her first role EVER. She blew everyone away. And those concert scenes, my word, that is how a rock concert should be captured on film. I thought she was just as good in For the Boys, she was robbed again.
Not a lot of people like Scenes From A Mall, I'm surprised that you do. There are so many scenes in that one that have me on the floor that I coudn't begin to count them. I think it's one of the more original comedies ever made.
And I simply can't watch those 80s comedies of hers and not laugh, they were all great. Ruthless People still makes me laugh HYSTERICALLY after almost twenty years. Have you ever seen Divine Madness? That one epitomizes Bette. She had pneumonia during filming, yet she still put every other performer to shame.

I liked her a lot in For The Boys but James Caan should have been kicked out of the movie. I can't say I would have preferred Bette instead of Jodie Foster, but it was great to see her at the Oscar night seated just behind Anthony Hopkins. I knew it was a good sign! :D.

Most people I've spoken to think it's stiff, boring, and just plain dull. Obviously, I don't hold that opinion. It's the movie that actually made Pauline Kael retire. She once said that after years of seeing and reviewing films, she saw Scenes From A Mall and finally just got fed up with seeing good actors (she was a big Bette fan, but hated Allen after Stardust Memories) star in bad movies. She said that there was nothing new she could add in her reviews, that it all became repetitive. So, she threw in the towel. The movie is an acquired taste, especially if you don't like Mazursky's brand of humour, or Allen's...or Bette's.

No one could ever match her reviews and no one, in my opinion, ever will. She was brilliant. Some of the things she wrote were so vicious but so witty and true.Real criticism is a vicious & witty endeavor.
Something stony & static set in with Kael round about 1978. She's peppery & pugnacious from her '65 book through, say, "Reeling" & even parts of "When the Lights Go Down." But after that, she recycles her tone & stance until you're not sure whether you're reading the real Kael or a female impersonator magpie of Kael.
But those were the glory years of American movie criticism: the '60s & early '70s, when Dwight Macdonald & Stanley Kauffmann & Kael & John Simon & others had most of us running to read the reviews without even bothering to see the movies.
I've got a CD of Kael, Simon & Macdonald discussing films & directors in a panel format in San Francisco in 1965. What a treat it is to hear these three swapping quips & sly insults for the audience!
I have 18,000 books of movie criticism & steal from them often.

But surely you are exaggerating to say that Kael hated Woody Allen after "Stardust Memories." She loved & lauded several Woody Allen movies after "Stardust": "The Purple Rose of Cairo," "Zelig," "Manhattan Murder Mystery," some of "Husbands & Wives."

It's no secret that he positively loathed her after the Stardust Memories (and it was awful) debacle. Regardless if she heaped a fair amount of praise on his other films, she never failed to mention Stardust Memories or the fact that he'd lost his magic; it may have been subtle, but her reviews of his films dripped with disgust when it came to Allen. She wasn't so subtle when it came to her disdain for him personally. Kael led the attacks.

As far as Stevie blushing at the jokes, I don't think she blushed when Bette looked right where she was sitting and said "Before we get into the serious stuff, if any of you have a dried up 30 year old doob at the bottom of your purse, now's the time to fire it up."

Yeah, she did those. The Rosemary Clooney tribute is superb. I didn't mind her not doing a lot of her own standards, but I was disappointed she dropped Stay With Me. It's my favorite.
As far as Stevie blushing at the jokes, I don't think she blushed when Bette looked right where she was sitting and said "Before we get into the serious stuff, if any of you have a dried up 30 year old doob at the bottom of your purse, now's the time to fire it up."

I love Stay With Me. The ones from Divine Madness and Art or Bust are my faves. I can imagine her dropping it, though, that's a really intense song. I wish she'd haul out and do the E Street Shuffle/Summertime/Leader of the Pack medley again. I'd give my left nut to hear it again.

I love that song. She is going to be performing in So Cal soon, and I may even venture behind the Orange Curtain to see her.
Oh, it's worth it. Her current show is the biggest and loudest one EVER. She'll have you tired at the end of her three hours onstage. She'll have you in the palm of her hand when she enters the stage from the rafters on a carousel horse.

I still die every time I hear about Soph and Ernie. I've heard it so many times but it always kills me.

That's one of my favorites, too. Wish she'd bring back the pink taco joke, though.  My fave Sophie joke is the one where she's at the supermarket:
"I was at the market the other day and was feeling quite, quite horny. I did my shopping, checked myself out and then looked to find a cute, suitable looking bagboy to help me out to my car. When we finally got out there, I couldn't control myself or my libido any longer and I blurted out 'Son, I've got an itchy booty. Would you mind helping me out?' The chap looked at my groceries, then he looked at me, then he said 'Sorry, lady, I don't know one Japanese car from the next.'"

Maybe she likes to hear/watch the dirty jokes, but she doesn't want to actually be an interactive part of them.

I personally think she didn't want to sing on "Come" because she thought it was about her.
I can't remember which interview, but Lindsey said as much... that Stevie was uncomfortable singing on "Come," because she feared people would think it was about her.
He also said (possibly in a separate interview) that she additionally had reservations about it being too blatantly sexual.
But I don't believe the latter feeling precludes Stevie from listening to someone tell dirty jokes, or from her telling them in the company of friends. One can believe that certain behaviour in certain situations is improper, without being a prude. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing situation.
I know personally that I can tell some filthy jokes with the best of them, but that I also feel there's a time and place for everything. Bawdiness tempered by decorum.

Tough line to tow, but much of it is common sense. You wouldn't want to sing "Otto Titsling" at a dinner with the Queen Mum. Unless, of course, the old broad was really crocked and sitting next to Dame Edna.
I tend to just speak my mind, even though my Momma taught me manners and I know when I can and cannot be comfortable being my potty mouthed self.
For a while, after college p.c. indoctrination, I was very self editing. Those days are so over. F that ! People's open wounds are their own unfinished business. If someone hasn't the smarts to tell a joke from a slur, there are therapists littering the countryside.

Every person on this Earth is a walking contradiction... it's one of the things that makes us all so fascinating! :)
My friends always tell me they love my racy sense of humour, etc.... while other people seem to think I'm solely the prim and proper librarian type.
For me, it's just a matter of knowing when something is proper and when it isn't.

It's nothing to do with people, it's to do with those two terms contradicting each other. Vulgarity tempered by propriety? Yup, an oxymoron.
It's common sense when it comes to telling jokes and being humorous, IMO. I wouldn't tell one of my vile jokes to the pharmacist as I'm getting my prescription filled, nor would I tell nasty Dick and Jane jokes at a funeral. I wouldn't go to the proctologist's office and tell a penis joke. I've got a filthy sense of humour and could put a sailor to shame with my mouth, but common sense dictates when to put both to use. Everyone has it, some just learn it sooner than later.

I believe in speaking your mind, but I also believe there's a way to do it and a way not to do it.
I guess even when I'm "telling it like it is," I prefer to be tactful and considerate.
And not that you're saying this is the case, but I don't view being considerate of others as being untrue to yourself. If I can't be funny without being hurtful, then something's wrong.
I've never understood those who feel something's only funny if you've managed to upset someone... just seems to me like they lack to ability to be genuinely funny, and instead have to settle for appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Well, of course it is!
But we're all walking oxymorons (though some are just morons)... and that was the point I was making. :)
Case in point... you have a vulgar sense of humour, but refrain from being vulgar around certain people.
You have the ability to be vulgar, but the wherewithal to know when it's improper... so the vulgarity is therefore tempered by propriety.
Yes, the phrase itself, on paper, is an oxymoron... but it's still fitting of the behaviour. :)

Umm...that would be the ENTIRE CULTURE making people feel subhuman if they are not mated off. And we wonder why the divorce rate is through the roof. People get married to avoid being alone...and do it way before they are developed, dependable, self reliant human beings with something more to offer than a warm body and an unformed psyche.
If one cannot stand alone and be happy, confident, and content, they are in no way suited to pair up and offer another anything other than heartache.

I know what you mean though... movies, commercials, television shows, greeting cards, everything seems designed to make those of us who are not coupled feel as if we're somehow defective.
I have to say though, and I hope I'm not ruining the ending for anyone by posting this, but the "hero" in 'Get Real' does not keep his man. Instead, he gains personal insight, and the audience is left with the impression that his future relationships will have a more stable foundation than his first. And, even more importantly, that he's going to be all right even if he doesn't find a mate.

You're completely right. That's the way I feel about it, too.
It's not that I hate being single, and I'm certainly not interested in pairing off simply because society says I should, it's just that I think I have a lot to offer someone, in a very substantive way. (Sorry if that sounds immodest.)

If you purposely and exclusively chase after guys or girls who are considerably younger than you, then it's kind of sad... but I honestly don't see anything wrong with dating someone younger than you, if you happen to click.
I think one of the biggest obstacles when it comes to relationships, is finding someone who's on the same page as you.
I've talked to guys who are ten years older than me, who I don't think ever want to "settle down," and I've talked with guys ten years younger than me who are beyond ready for a life-long commitment. Age is irrelevant in those matters.
I'm looking for someone with whom I can have a balanced relationship, where we're both equals and we're both on the same page. If he's my age or older, fine. If he's younger than me, fine.
I mean, I admit I don't necessarily want to date someone who's as old as my father (ooh, I'm going to get slammed for being shallow on that one!), and I sure don't want to date someone who's underage (I'm too pretty for prison! ;) )... but anyone 18 or over, though younger than 45, is in the running.

Yea - karaoke people have been known to go from one karaoke bar to another - it is kind of alarming in that they seem to live for it. But, to each their own I guess. I like karaoke, but the songs offered are sometimes not the same as the studio versions. They are instead truncated. So, give me a live piano player anyday of the week so I can torture the poor soul

That certainly broadens the base of possibilities. Since I have been dating (about 22 is when I got serious enough to call it that) I have never dated anyone under 28. Now, I would never date anyone under 30. Not a CHANCE. Maybe not even under 35. Not because they aren't interesting, or attractive. And, there are always exceptions. Thing is, there is an experience differential. I want to be with someone who knows what they want out their lives, knows where they are going, and has enough experience to be pretty sure about it. Plus, they ought to know themselves. In my experience, few people have a clue until after 30 about most of that stuff.
For example, a lot of people in their 20's will, and should, make radical decisions. It is a time for questioning, experimenting, and growing up. I don't want to get all ga-ga over someone who decides he wants to go live in Europe for a year, or go get a PhD in New York. Then there is the financial disparity thing. Don't get me started on that one !
I thought I knew everything at about 28. Of course. I was smart, outta college, had a great job, yada yada. I knew nothing. But, of course, I didn't realize I knew nothing until a few years later.

Johnny Stew has always been cute, IMO.
My copy of Gypsy 83 just came in, I'll be posting a review soon.
Latter Days was very good up until the end. (I won't spoil it, but I felt manipulated)
Stevie should record Bette's Shiver Me Timbers...just keeping on topic...

Did you not see the other thread? You have someone elses banners amongst your own. I take it this was an oversight?

She can record the Samedi Et Vendredi version, I don't want anyone to even try to attempt covering the Live At Last version. That song puts me in tears every time, her delivery is out of this world.
Won't you please call my family
Tell 'em not to cry
My goodbyes are written by the moon in the sky
Saying "Nobody knows me, I got no reason to stay
Shiver me timbers, I'm sailing away"
and then the La-la-la-la-la at the end, ooh it's perfect. Chills, baby, chills!

Very cute, Johnny Stew I'm impressed. But now I'm afraid to post mine...
Again, it's cool that the looks match the intellect!
