those tracks make me me wonder again about who exactly were the dumbasses who edited the songs for that album. how could they left out this track or touched by an angel in favour of songs like too far from texas or that made me stronger? what were they thinking when they chose to use the other version of bombay sapphires?

The only reason I can think of is maybe someone noticed Stevie made a glaring mistake in the turn of a phrase she used in the song. Not that she hasn't done something like this before. As long as LB hasn't heard it. He'd be telling her to change it becuse it's not correct. Then she'd have to change the entire song to something a lot less adoring after he's pissed her off.
I don't want to ruin the song for anyone who truly loves it the way it is, but anyone who's seen the film "The Ladykillers" or reads classic literature knows what I'm talking about.

Probably either Sheryl Crow or Mike Campbell (who wrote the music). :)
It doesn't have much of a John Shanks feel, at least to my ears.

I think My Heart is atrocious. :distress: The lyrics are pretty good, but it's so AC and overproduced, even more than the rest of TISL. I can't really grasp much of a melody, either. Someone sent it to me awhile back raving about it, but I was left quite cold. One of the things that makes my ears bleed is the melodramatic music during the verses. My word, it sounds like stock music from a Streisand record.
HOWEVER -----
I loooooooooove Bombay Sapphires. It slays the album version.

I was thinking it should be "eyes, like the windows to the soul" instead of the other way around. The metaphor is backwards. But who am I to tell Stevie Nicks how to write... it's the poet that she is. :xoxo:
Now that the novelty has worn off... I think the lyrics are nice, but the music is overdramatic. As for the alternate Bombay Sapphires, I immediately thought it beat the pants off of the album version. Productionwise, less is more. And she didn't need Macy Gray on this song. The "I can... I can..." ending is lovely, too.

I like it too, though I admit it's kind of a guilty pleasure music-wise. :)
The intro, with those banged out power chords right before the vocal kicks in, reminds me of the bombastic (and very early 90s) intro to "Love's a Hard Game to Play"!

I like TISL, but some of it is pretty hit and miss.
-TISL is one of her best songs. The lyrics are astounding.
-Candlebright is very enjoyable, but can get cloying if listened to too much.
-Love Sorcerer. The Sheryl Crow mix is even better!!!
-Love POTU, but I prefer the extended album version.
-Every Day is boring and bland as hell. Really nothing memorable in it.
-Too Far From Texas can't go far enough away for me to be happy. It's torturous.
-That Made Me Stronger is unlistenable.
-It's Only Love is beautiful.
-Love Changes is very good in spots and very bad in spots.
-I Miss You is pretty. Too repetitive but she sounds great and the music is enjoyable.
-Bombay Sapphires is one of my faves. The new alternate version puts it to shame, though.
-Fall From Grace is great, though a bit too "manufactured" for my tastes.
-Love Is...terrible.
Much of the production is awful and they did something to her voice to make it almost metallic, but a lot of the material is so good that it doesn't matter. Would have liked to have seen Touched By An Angel on there, though.

Stevie Nicks albums are all about over-the-top production....
I'd be inclined to say that about Fleetwood Mac albums, in general... well, at least after Lindsey and Stevie came on board.
Most of their songs could be (and have been) described as "over-produced."
I guess it's never bothered me, because it's a sound that I've always liked (I'm the Jim Steinman fan, remember?)... despite the fact that I do firmly believe there are times when less is more.
For me though, I don't think "My Heart" sounds "overproduced," and I don't feel that way about the album version of "Bombay Sapphires" either.
The alternate take of the latter just sounds watered down to me.
But, hey, when you find something to praise, I'm not gonna argue! ;)

Of course you'd be inclined to say that, but we were not talking about Fleetwood Mac or Lindsey Buckingham. ;) There can be no doubt that all three overproduce on every album, but I just feel that it really hinders a lot of Stevie's solo material.
My Heart is overproduced to the point where it's, literally, unlistenable to me. The music is so cheesy that I can't get over it.

You've got that right. It's one thing not to trade something, but it's a completely different thing to not trade something and then brag about it so rudely on your trade page. It's as if they want us to feel that she's better than everyone else because she's elite enough to have such a "rare" item. People like that give trading music a bad name.

I think more people feel like you do than the way Tiffany and I do about it.
Stevie Nicks albums are all about over-the-top production, so I can see why some people would feel something is missing from this "less-is-more" version. I miss Macy Gray, but I still prefer the alternate.
Even the stellar and lambent Bella Donna - in fact she hired Jimmy I. specifically for that HUGE "Because the Night" (LOVE THAT SONG BTW - esp. the 10,000 Maniacs cover  ) - because Jimmy I. produced that.

I agree with you almost 100%  - the only diff. is I like TFFT - I think Stevie makes the songs the way she likes them - in fact she is pretty frank about that, esp. regarding Bombay Saph. - in those VH-1 video interviews she said there were a few productions of it and the one on the record is her fav. and she then said something like "and maybe somebody else might like the other productions - but I liked that one," etc.
All in All - I think TISL was stellar though and was so happy to hear it!!!!!!! :woohoo:
Recording songs the way you like them doesn't make them good.
I like TISL a lot, I think it was a great comeback vehicle for her solo career. As with every album, there are things that drive me nuts because of their sheer mediocrity, but I think her material was strong enough to make the record rather resillient in that respect. The title track still astounds me with every listen, it's perfection.
However, I hope that on the next record they don't screw with her vocals so much. The metallic feel to them on TISL is a very acquired taste.

Oh I agree - I was saying they are the way she wanted them - I think her vocals could have been better - but I always say that about everyone including people like Deborah Voigt, Patti Lupone, Christine M, - all of which I really consider close to perfection - at least to me

I remember when she posted the snippet. I respect her decision to keep her stuff to herself. But, although I was happy to hear it, the teaser was IMO uncalled for - I mean we pretty much ALL share freely around here. But, it was her's and it was her decision. Voice tinkering, that's exactly what it is. It's as if they homogenized her voice so much that it's a chore to find any warmth to it on that album, save maybe It's Only Love. I don't know how to describe it, but metallic is a pretty good word for it.

Yeah, it got to be a very big turn-off. I'm not a seasoned web site designer and I certainly am not an expert at posting songs for download. It was my first stab at it because I wanted to share rare things with people that didn't have access to it because I didn't think it was fair for people to be left out from hearing such good stuff. Then all the bitching started.
The first major bitch was over my saying that I had a "very large" collection of stuff that I wanted to share. Some people took GREAT offense to my saying that I had a "very large" collection and posted a lot of nasty things about me on that wretched Stevie Nicks Chain group. It was incredibly silly.
The second major bitch was over sound quality. I had compressed the files so that I could fit more downloads on the page each week for people to hear. "They" didn't like that one bit.
Then I started getting emails from the group of farts that were involved with Bill and his reels that told me to stop posting the reels or else I'd find myself without a single person to trade with. They were true pieces of work.
It didn't matter that I was the person who started circulating the SYW early mixes or that I was sharing stuff for the sake of sharing, it became all about what people wanted and what they wanted more of. People showed their true colors...yet they still downloaded the f*cking things. ;) It stopped becoming worth the aggravation. I hope everyone liked the stuff I posted because it certainly didn't feel as if anyone appreciated it. It was all about more more more.

There's something about that album I just can't take to, like it's too forced and trying too hard to be sunny. Or maybe it's because it follows on from The Globe Sessions, which I still hold up as Sheryl's best work to date. A hard act to follow. I hope she does something in a similar vein for her next record.
Sorry, I don't mean to turn this thread into a Sheryl Crow discussion!

As for Bombay Sapphires, I'm not so crazy about the alt-version. I like the urgency and mood of the album version better. And the fact that the "sea never changes ... here I am dramatic..." section is only used once. My Heart
(lyrics by Stevie Nicks; music by Michael Campbell)
Shadows, and the first sign of light,
Lifted my heart
As if some kind of wings lifted me up
And so became... your face, your name
After all these years, it's still the same
And you're not to blame
Well, my heart still stops
When I stand before you
And my heart still breaks
When you take my hand
And my eyes still close
When someone speaks your name
You understand it's all the same
Windows, like the eyes to the soul
From across the room
And the crowd fades away
You stand alone
Like nothing's changed
Your face, your name
After all these years... it's still the same
You're not to blame
Well, my heart still stops
When I stand before you
And my heart still breaks
When you take my hand
And my eyes still close
When someone speaks your name
And you understand it's all the same
Ooh, my heart still stops
When I stand before you
And my heart still breaks
When you take my hand
And my eyes still close
When someone speaks your name
And you understand
Well, my heart still stops
When I stand before you
Ooh, and my heart still breaks
When you take my hand
My heart still cries
When someone speaks your name
And you understand it's all the same
It's all the same

My resentment over all this crap began with those blasted master reels. I mean, let's call a spade a spade; that business was complete and utter ****. That's an unpopular opinion among a lot of people, but I don't think that fans should be excluded from having access to that kind of stuff, especially when the very people involved in the master reel brouha would have no boot collection to speak of if it weren't for the oh-so-lowly commoners in the trading circles. When I traded for master reels and had something someone wanted to hear, I posted the damned thing (back when I was putting songs up for download). It's not my music and it certainly wasn't the music of the businessman we've come to know as Bill. Let the people hear it, don't be an asshole over such trivial things.
Excellent.

I love the BS Alt version. So much better than the TISL version.
My Heart is okay. I am sure after I listen to it more it will grow on me.
Speaking of better versions...
I LOVE how Goodbye Baby sounds on the Destiny Rules DVD. Just Stevie singing and Lindsey playing the guitar. They should have done something like that for the SYW album.

And, ironically, it's the "Wall Of Sound" (a phrase which, in and of itself, implies a cacphony of sound, ie: overproduction) Stevie solo version that you prefer! ;)
Yup. The "solo" version suits the song much better. It's more hurried and urgent, and the interaction between her and Lindsey is phenomenal. The vocals from both are stellar and make the lyrics ring truer than the vocals on the Mac version. The Mac version is the musical equivalent to wet crackers. Lousy vocal, plodding music, the ending sounds rushed, and it just doesn't do a thing for me.

The WOS version of Thrown Down freakin' RULES!! I have that one on my fave songs iTunes playlist. :)
I know alot of people don't like that she doesn't do the "shakin' your faith" verse, but ah well, I'll give that up for the WOS version.
I don't particularly care for the girls' bgv's, but that's something else I'll overlook for this version of TD. It reminds me of Lindsey's version of PK because of the uptempo-ness of it.

I think the only thing that recommends the "Wall of Sound" version is Lindsey's spectacular vocal at the end. Otherwise, I think the album "Thrown Down" is much better. I find her backup singers very annoying and intrusive on such a personal song. I have to admit, though, I'd never thought about dissention's suggestion that it was meant to be a Stevie solo with Lindsey as a guest. To have him guest on a song about him, in such a powerful way - that would have been AWESOME!

Lindsey's PK was SO much better. Why'd they turn Stevie up so high in the mix? It's not her song. And slowing it down was a mistake too.

Peacekeeper was mangled beyond recognition. As for Stevie being so up front in the mix, what do you think of the remix from Europe (Tin Tin or something like that)? Oy vey, I can barely hear Lindsey. For me, the difference between Stevie's solo "Thrown Down" and the 'Say You Will' version, is a good example of Lindsey taking an already fantastic song and just making it that much better.
I'm not someone who thinks Lindsey should always produce everything Stevie records, but in some cases I think his influence spurs the song to even greater heights.
While others prefer the previously-known versions of "Smile At You," "Running Through The Garden" and "Goodbye Baby," I prefer Lindsey's 'SYW' production in those cases too.
I think "Thrown Down" became more intimate and "shimmering" in Lindsey's hands. It's not like I dislike the 'TISL' outtake though... it's a great song in any form, IMO.
I do agree that the ending of the 'SYW' version sounds rushed though... like something was edited out of it at the last minute, to make the track shorter.

Plus it helps to explain why Sheryl Crow seemed to make such a big deal in a Billboard article about Lindsey's appearance on Stevie's then upcoming album. She seemed to imply that it was a really powerful appearance and fans would be impressed... so I never could figure out why she'd be so jazzed about what amounted to a barely noticeable acoustic guitar appearance ("I Miss You").
All in all, it does make Lindsey's vocal on the outtake version of "Thrown Down" even more effective.

I'm just not one that feels sparse production equals intimacy. A song is either intimate or it isn't, it all depends on the person listening to it. I've never liked the plodding feel to the album version, it makes the song and the band sound tired and uninspired. If I ever I have to point to Lindsey's production killing a Nicks song, it will be the production on Thrown Down.
The TISL outtake is nothing special lyrically or musically (musically, it's rather bland, too). But the way it's all conveyed in the vocals and the dynamic between the two just seals the deal for me. The fast tempo doesn't hurt, either.
Wish those damned background singers weren't on it, though, they are annoying as all hell. But, then again, I hate most of the background singers most of the time.

This actually brings up an interesting question (though hopefully not another Ledge war):
Since so many fans seem to prefer Stevie's solo outtake of "Running Through The Garden," what we now know is a solo version of "Thrown Down," her piano demo of "Goodbye Baby," and the "angry" version of "Smile At You" (which Ken Caillat has gone on record as saying was NOT recorded by Fleetwood Mac, but rather by Stevie's solo band, and a guitarist recreating Lindsey's style -- much to Lindsey's annoyance), and since so many people dislike the "altered voices" effects in "Illume" and "Everybody Finds Out"....
Is Lindsey not quite as in-tune with what's best for Stevie's songs as he used to be?
Let me go on record as saying that, personally, I prefer Lindsey's production on all the aforementioned songs, above any of the earlier recordings. In every case.
But I've noticed quite a few other fans... even some of the bigger Buckingham fans... stating that they were less-than-thrilled with the production and arrangement touches on Stevie's 'SYW' songs. So it has me wondering.

But you're right... I do think "Destiny Rules" has some of the best mixing on the album, thanks to Chris Lord-Alge.

Ken's wrong, but I'll stay on point.
I prefer Goodbye Baby on the album, I think the production is perfection. I can't bear listening to her pound on a beautiful piano like a five year old who's had too much candy on the demos.
The only thing I prefer on the RTTG outtake is her voice and the duleing vocals. It has nothing to do with production, really, since they're essentially the same (but the SYW version is better). I suspect that it was intentional for the production to be plastic.
Smile At You is great and I think it blows away the angry demo, which I never liked (too much screaming). The guitar at the end makes the song for me.
The altered voices bother me, always have. However, the blame lies on both their shoulders. Stevie certainly wouldn't let him do something she didn't like to her "children." ;)

I don't know if you're necessarily referring to me as one of the folks you're talking about, but I know I have complained about some of the above. As I've said before, I prefer his take on Thrown Down and I love the addition of his guitar work on RTTG, althoguh I admit I missed the overlapping vocals "Never did I mean to (until she herself) imprison you (became the deadliest poison)" - that's so cool. Otherwise the SYW version is better.
Regarding Smile At You and Illume.... I'll be frank here.... Lindsey botched them. Don't tell me those unnatural sounds and freakish vocals were Stevie's idea. I'm sure he sold her on it, but it was his idea. And it was a bad one.
Regarding EFO - I adore that mix. It rocks. The echo vocal really works.
So, what's my assessment? I still think Lindsey can take Stevie's songs to places they'd never get to otherwise. I love what he does to MOST of her songs. However, sometimes, it appears he can get out of control and take them TOO far. That's reflected in his own work, when it gets over-produced and gimmicky, and his own self-indulgences occasionally spill over onto Stevie's music when he's producing it. When he controls his tendency to do that, he's still the best there is. http://www.buckinghamnicks.net/images/smileys/smile.gif

It sure seems like he has to be wrong on that one, yet he seemed pretty positive that it was never recorded by Fleetwood Mac during the years he was around.
I've always thought it sounded like Fleetwood Mac, and not some group of session players trying to sound like Fleetwood Mac.

No, I don't think he is. I've actually half-entertained making this point before, but didn't want to cause a big fight.
I think he did an absolutely *abysmal* job with the song "Say You Will." Those electric guitar parts in the verse are about the most pedestrian I've ever heard from him, and the children's chorus makes me cringe.
On "Illume," those silly voice effects nearly ruin what may be Stevie's best new song of the past 20 years.
"Smile at You" -- I have the same complaints many others have expressed.
"Silver Girl" is flat, and "Destiny Rules" is OK -- I really like the banjo stuff at the end -- but he steals an old guitar riff from "World Turning" for the verse.
I feel the only song he worked his old magic on was "Thrown Down," which has a simple and elegant arrangement that masks Stevie's rather boring chords -- though I see I'm in the minority on that.
In general, I'd say the problem is that he doesn't give her songs -- or his, for the matter -- enough room to breathe. There are too many overdubs, too many effects. Less is more. That's why I love "Rumours" and especially "Tusk" so much -- they weren't overdone. He used to leave something to the imagination!

I have nearly the same criticisms on those songs. However, I wonder if the reason he's not doing a comparable job on her work as before has to do with the power dynamic taking a strong shift toward compromise? I'm sure on Stevie's songs LB's influence is watered down, especially when they disagree. My guess is, in order to keep things from getting combative on everything he does for her, he's doing it the way she wants most of the time. JMHO.
I fault him for ruining Illume, but I think some of the other clunkers should be placed at Stevie's feet. If you think he does what he really wants with her stuff anymore, I'd say you've got another thing coming. Do you really think the SYW kiddie chorus was his idea? I really dislike that intensely. Yet, wasn't it Stevie who pointed out in the DR Doc that music is sold to people ages 10-27? I see some campaigning here for the pre-teen market.
The only song I disagree with you on is Smile at You. Even though everyone likes the old demo better, I love this version. I agree, Thrown Down is closest to the old magic as anything on SYW. On his own songs, I like most of what he did, but the GOS demos were often better. The treatment of Say Goodbye on the recording is the only one that doesn't work for me. After seeing it simplified being done live, it's clear he overdid it in the studio.

Honestly it makes me wonder why Say You Will took so damn long to make. I mean most of Lindsey's song were DONE, all he had to do was add Stevie's voice. Stevie's songs like "Silver Girl," "Thrown Down," and "Say You Will" aren't much different than the "Demos" she brought that we say in the documentary...what took them so long?

The Silver Girl demo that was played in Destiny Rules was fab. I can't stand the song on SYW.
Say Goodbye should have been done just as it was live. It is their song, so that was a missed opportunity, IMO.
I cannot abide Smile At You. It's an angry rock and roll song and should be treated as such.
Illume is so beautiful that I am willing to forgive the helium voices.
Chris Lord Alge's mixes stand right out. I think it would have been worth the time to let him mix it, although I like what he did with Thrown Down.

I agree - I think Stevie should have stood her ground regarding Lord-Alge. I also think from what we have heard of the SG demo (if anyone has the whole thing - Uh Hm
[email protected] ) - it was beautiful with the flute, etc. But, we got what we got, and I like almost all of it. So . . . :woohoo:

I particularly like the ending. "Sometimes...she's an actress...but you'll never really know." She doesn't really sing it, she speaks it and I love it.

I also love how she says
You cannot see her soul and then she cleverly IMO twists it to a pleading SEE her soul
I love the song and I am not ashamed to say so

Me, neither. I think it's great. It sounds straight out of the Street Angel sessions, but I think it's one of her better performances on the album. She paints quite a vivid picture in that song.

It took Silver Girl a while to grow on me, but I like it too myself. I know a lot of ppl cant stand RUNNING THROUGH THE GARDEN from SYW , but it's still my fav. track on the CD

You guys. God Bless Ya. I think the vocal is great, but the lyrics and production are alternately embarrassing and amateur. Definitely one of those songs my friends hear and can't help but ask me, "THIS is one of your favorite songwriters, right ? EXPLAIN THIS."

The music is atrocious and some of the lyrics are downright embarassing, but I get what she was trying to do with it and kind of like it. It's nowhere near as wretched as Say You Will or Thrown Down.

What, I ask you, in either of those songs is WORSE than the lyrics, "She was a girly girl, caught in a hardcore world" ? I could go on with the lyrics, my friend. And that intro music...those tentative little wisps of keyboard. It reminds me of how one reviewer in 1983 said the intro to Sable On Blonde sounded like the music for a feminine hygiene commercial. That would be Silver Girl.

Those are the lyrics that make me cringe. Along with "Say you will give me one more chance, at least give me time to change your mind." Can we get ANY more cliched and vaccous?
Christ, I still cannot get over the fact that she doesn't finish her train of thought in the first verse of Say You Will. It ruins the song for me, along with the chipmunks at the end. If I wanted to hear those creepy little voices, I'd put Rock A Little in my record player and play it at 45 speed.

I agree that the cliched little pleading victim vibe there makes me wince, but it is at least....not as clunky and out of kilter as SG.

Or just the "How will we feel 20 years from now" part of I Can't Wait.
How will we feel twenty years from now ? - Like we should have gone to Betty Ford 3 years earlier, that's how !

It's even worse in If You Ever Did Believe. She sounds like one of those battered girlfriends on Maury, "Baby, don't leave me, I promise to clip your toenails after work each week. I love you, baby, don't leave me, I'm donw on my knees. I'll even bite the corns off, baby."

Another case where compromise might have damaged the final product.

Yeah, but I think Alge's mixes take a lot of warmth away from her vocals. TISL, for example, is one acquired taste of an album and that has a lot to do with her vocals in the mix.

Am I the only one who thought the guys were being sarcastic in DR praising the demo so much?

I don't think they were being sarcastic. However, I wouldn't put it past them to be kissing up and overdoing their praise for the sake of the camera. The other option (and actually the one I lean towards) is that they were praising ALL the demos and not just Silver Girl.
I have to say it's my least favorite on the album. Lame lyrics, dull tune. Self-indulgent to boot. "Oh let me sing about my famous friend."

I also thought they were referring to all the demos, but just in case I'd like to listen to the SG demo with the flute, so whoever is hiding it, could please bring it out? :p

To me it sounds more about herself than about Sheryl, especially in the chorus, the part I like. :)
