View Full Version : Who's doing the Day After Thanksgiving shopping?

Okay, so who is going to get up at the crack or dawn and do the whole bargain hunting thing? What stores are you hitting? What are you in the market for?

I can't understand this at all. :distress: I can only take shopping for a few hours at a time, more like one hour of actual shopping and then a break to eat something. This girl in my history class says her family is always ready to go at 5:00 a.m. and they don't get back until that night.

That's flippin' insane!!! I don't like shopping enough to battle the jungle of the day after Thanksgiving. There is nothing I need - and I find crowds to be big trials in anger management for me....people are rude and I usually can't handle the big crowded stores...not even for mega big sales...

Not to save my life or the freedom of my country. I would need a fistful of Xanax to deal with the crowds and frenzy. Sparky is almost done shopping. Little need for this madness. But, for those who like this scene, Knock Yourselves Out. :woohoo:

In lieu of actual gifts, almost all receive from me a card that says a donation has been made to a charity in their name by be for the holidays. So, I have little shopping to do - but THAT certainly will not keep me outa the stores

I'll be driving back home from my parent's house on Friday. I don't think I want to hit the mall or anything. I worked at Old Navy for two years and know how it is. It wasn't pretty. Besides, I hate to shop and have no one to shop for.....

People are such assholes on the day after Thanksgiving, you can't survive without being one yourself. I was in the GAP last year and got into a fight with one lady over a pair of pants because there was only one left. I didn't get the pants, but I sure let her have it.

When I went to NJ for Thanksgiving in 1997... err,, actually it was for the Reunion Tour, Madison Square Garden concert at NYC, but also to dine with my relatives, ha ha....

Well, the day after I woke up very early to go shopping at K-Mart (or was it Wal-Mart? can't remember). But the sales weren't that crazy I always heard. Yeah, cool prices but I didn't find any "incredible" sale, at least what I was looking for.

My uncles (who live in NJ) bought a TV, I think it was very cheap. Anyway, not a good idea for me to carry a TV to Peru, I looked for small stuff, but it wasn't big deal.

No big lines or crowded place, fortunately

Oh to be a bug on your shoulder for Friday's festivities. I can just picture you bickering with a woman over a pair of pants. That is rich.

Mom & I will be out of here by 4AM on Friday. I need to get to Target, because Season 7 of Buffy's on sale for $17.77. Which is CRAZY. Buffy DVDs are usually $50-60 in stores, and there's NO WAY I'm letting anyone pay that much for Season 7 of all things.

Other than that, I'm not sure what Mom & I are going out for. She can't really get stuff on my list, because... I'll be there. My sister just moved out, and I have no idea what she wants.

You have to know how to get things cheap. For example, one little known fact:

If your local supermarket carries things like electronics and DVDs and advertises them in their flyer that week, you can get them for much cheaper by using triple coupons. I save coupons like "15% off your next purchase" and you can go into the store, get something on-sale for, say, $20 and then get an extra 45% off with that coupon and a triple coupon.

Always get flyers from all the stores around so that if you don't want to go to all of them, you can go to one that does price matching and get all the stuff you want in one store at the prices the other stores are advertising. Try to hit places like Circuit City and Best Buy when doing that because they also lop off another 10-15% of the competitors price.

Amazon had all the Buffy seasons for $14.95 each a few weeks ago, along with a bunch of other Fox company DVD sets like MASH, Family Guy, Simpsons, Millennium, etc.

I saw in a flyer that WAl-Mart has a bunch of DVDs on sale for $3.88 - pictured is You've Got Mail (which I've always wanted) - so actually I AM torn about whether or not to even battle that evil ass store....and inevitably I'll get there and they won't have that one movie that I want....

I won't give a cent of my money to that wretched corporation, so I'm going to price match it at Circuit City and get Blade Runner for $3.88.

okay, you didn't mean 4 in the morning, right? cause that's absurd. But, also, you were fighting with a girl over some pants? You are the flaminest "straight" guy ever. I don't really get it, i've never gone shopping on that day at all. Could it really be that crowded? How weird, that i've never experienced this phenomena that everyone else seems to know about and take for granted. If you don't have a lot of money to spend, it's the best day to go Christmas shopping. Black Friday is the biggest sale day of the year and once it's over, everything gets jacked up. Stuff is mad cheap and stuff is even cheaper if you know how shop. It sure is a zoo, you'll get angry and probably yell at someone, but it's worth it.

I am the coupon and sale King. When I go grocery shopping, they're ready for my ass. It may take a little extra time to clip coupons on Sunday mornings, but if I didn't, I wouldn't be getting $125 worth of groceries for $30. :p Try this website, this is how I got started:

It's still crowded here in WV on the day after T-giving, but we recently (within the past five years) started to have a TAX FREE WEEKEND. That weekend (Fri-Sun) has become bigger than Black Friday.

We had tax-free Saturday here in Mass. a few months ago and it ended up having a normal Saturday consumer turnout. You would think that those living in Taxachusetts would take advantage of it. But they also had so many restrictions on what you could and couldn't buy that it was too much of a pain in the ass.

 Whole Foods is ridiculously priced. Don't you have a Trader Joe's? It's so much cheaper than Whole Foods (formerly Bread & Circus). I used to shop at Bread & Circus all the time, but I got sick and tired of paying $6 for a four pack of natural soda. When Trader Joe's opened up, I was in heaven. Honey, if you lived here, you wouldn't want to come back out into this either. Not only is there one mall down the road....a few miles after that is a second mall. Not to mention Rt. 70 and Rt. 73 have been profiled to be some of the busiest roads on news programs and we're talking when there isn't a holiday. I'm finished work at 8 and one of my friends and i are going to get something to eat around here. I'm not seeing much in this year's Walmart blitz ad that I can't live without.. I was expecting them to have sweats on sale but they don't. They've got a 128mb jump drive for $15 and I've been looking for one... it's just on sale though, not blitz. My dad got in today and he says he's in the market for a digital camera for work, though...

All research proves that there is no difference between the foods with hormones and pesticides and the ones without it when it comes to the effects on your body. Also, most of those produce products are not sprayed with pesticides and chemicals, but 90% of them come into contact with those exact chemicals because they come from farms that use them. I don't like the idea of eating all that ****, though, which is why I buy stuff to clean my produce with. Sure as hell beats the ridiculous Whole Food prices.

I guess it depends on where you live. I'd rather pay $1.09 for a head of lettuce at Trader Joe's than $2.19 at Whole Foods.
that's quite a price difference. It really does come down a lot to convenience for me, though. the store is a 10-15 minute walk from my house, and i just rollerblade on the way back. I just asked the guy here what he thinks of trader joe's here, and he says he's not thrilled with it. But, this town has like a glut of organic places, so, my prices are pretty good.

With each passing day I become convinced that Diss is a long-lost cousin of mine. But I swear, his price matching strategy is one I've never actually even tried so he's got me beat!

I'm a bargain shopper too. I'm also a competitive shopper and I despise the amateur shoppers that come out on Black Friday. Which is why I'm always up and at 'em as soon as the stores open. I get the Thursday paper, go through the sales ads, and create a strategy map. I'm usually home by noon at the latest.

This year, however,I've already done all my Christmas shopping. Long story short: I'm taking a drug for my arthritis which lowers my immune system down and I couldn't get a flu shot because there are none to be had in this part of the world. So I wanted to do everything I could do to minimize my risk by avoiding large crowds whenever and wherever possible. I'll miss not being out on Friday but I'm sure that I can still get in a few bargain hunts via the internet. (At this point, I'm just buying gifts for me because hey, no body loves me like I love me)!

And on edit--how the heck did I miss the WB sale on Amazon? Woe is me! Diss-let me know how I can find out about these things in the future!

What's WB? Besides Warner Bros. :) That's a nice shopping strategy, BTW. I don't get frustrated with shopping, really. I'm a really fast clothes shopper, though. I never go with my friends, cause they just wander around and can't seem to tell what they want  I'm like the speed reader version of a clothes shopper  I can't imagine doing much planning, though. but if I did the day after TG thing, i guess i'd have to.

We had tax-free Saturday here in Mass. a few months ago and it ended up having a normal Saturday consumer turnout. You would think that those living in Taxachusetts would take advantage of it. But they also had so many restrictions on what you could and couldn't buy that it was too much of a pain in the ass.

There were a few Rhode Islanders that took advantage, too  I bought some software.

Start with RefundleBundle.com for your groceries. I haven't paid more than $50 for a full cart of groceries in almost two years.

As for online bargains for DVDs and CDs, try DVDTalk.com. Click on the forums up top, then go down to the Bargains forum. I'm telling ya, I am the King of saving money. I can't remember the last time I paid full price for something.

Another good thing to try is just typing in random stuff like "amazon coupon." That'll usually get something to come up, though you'll have to wade through the results. Also, if you go to Amazon and find something you want, be sure to check the "New and Used" section. More times than not, people are selling brand-new and factory-sealed items for much cheaper than what Amazon is charging and the shipping is cheaper. That's how I get a lot of books and CDs. I don't even bother with Half.com because all the folks on there are greedy bastards and eBay has made it so that people can charge more than half the list price. Schmucks.

The online DVD rentals are good, also. Sign up for the two week free trial and some of them (like Blockbuster) will give you a whole month free if you try to cancel at the end of the two weeks. You can find coupon codes for those places at the DVD site above. After the free month is over, cancel and sign back up with a different credit card.

I could give you tips on places like Columbia House, too.

On Black Friday, make sure you have flyers for every store and that you carry them with you all the time. Try to price match at a store that gives an extra 10% over the competitors price. :woohoo:

I'm a speed shopper too, actually. I can breeze through a store in record time. You should see me scouring the sales racks at places like TJ Maxx & Marshall's. I like HomeGoods too.

I like expensive, "label" names, but I loathe paying full retail for anything. I wait for my favorite labels to go on sale at my local department sales or wait for when they're having a special promotion or something where you get a certain percentage off of whatever you want. Sometimes they make you use your store department charge card but I pay mine off every month so I avoid the interest charges. I also have had great luck at finding designer labels for less at places like TJ Maxx. I scored a Dooney & Bourke purse for $80 and a pair of Coach shoes for $39 in recent outings. But you really have to get into the racks and hunt to find the good stuff!

And on edit--I only shop with people who have my shopping speed/traits. Usually though, I go it alone.

Apply for one, the worst they can do is turn you down. ;) When I was in my teens, I had my mother get a card in my name to use. She would buy one thing each month on the card (something small like a video or book) and then pay it off when the bill came in. Needless to say, I had exemplary credit by the time I turned 18.

Sounds like full force Virgo methods at their best! those are good deals. Yeah, about shopping with people. but i'm the same at most stuff, ie, fast! I have this one friend, she has no concept of time, people waiting, or anything resembling such. And my other friend, doesn't even like to shop! It's fun going with her, just to pick out stuff that would look good on her, though! hehehe. I don't care about name brands (why? seems strange, and shallow - not that your shallow, i just have a philosophical aversion to people who care about that, and would judge others because of it. it stems from the only thing people could make fun of me when growing up was being poor, and not having the "right" clothes. anyways. :D )
and lately i always buy cheap clothes. But the important thing to me is that people always admire my clothes anyway  I'm like "thanks! it was 10 bucks!" hehehe. But a weird thing i read about Cancers is that they would be good fashion buyers, because their "extra sense" makes them able to discern the public's taste  And i'm only saying that cause i know you enjoy astrology :p I would assume that you have plain, but high quality, well cut taste. right? :)

You could get a debit card, too. If you have a checking account you can apply for one as long as your checking account is in good standing.

You can use it as an ATM card or to make purchases in a store or online. It will have either a Mastercard or a Visa logo on it.

I absolutely do not believe that about the hormones in meat. I absolutely believe they affect us.

Don't they pump dairy cows full of hormones?? I mean it would explain why girls are starting their periods at a much younger age. It was normal around 13 or so. Now days girls are starting around 9 or 10.  It also would explain why they are more blessed with larger chests.

Back on topic. No way, I dont think I could handle it. Like someone else stated before, I'd have to have some help in the zanax department. On the news last night they said Target was offering a free wake up call. So, I thought this could be fun. I was gonna sign some friends up that I new was gonna be sleeping and not shopping a 4 a.m. wake up call from the lady with a cat. You'd just have to check it out just to hear how she talks. Anyway, after you type in the phone number and submit, it says you have to call within so many hours from that phone number. Damn!!

I plan to spend 37¢ for everyone on my list and cash in on this fat boy holiday. Here’s the plan. Get yourself some cheap money cards at the dollar store. Now you have to be stern with these bozo’s or they’ll sh*t all over you and you’ll end up with squat.

You write inside the card “Here’s $100 you better buy me something for at least $50 you cheap bastard.” The catch is you don’t put any money inside for these whining sacks. Cut a slit in the end of the envelope and mail it to the undeserving slugs. When they get the card it looks like some ruthless thief at the post office stole the cash. In return you get something worth about $50 from every sucker on your list. :xoxo:

If they buy you some cheap hunk of junk you’re not out much and you can use it against them next year.

They're the Wal-Mart of natural foods.

80% of everything I eat is from Trader Joe's. And I can almost walk to one. It rocks. So much cheaper than any other store. Plus amazing food. They just opened a WHOLE PAYCHECK near me. That place sucks. With those prices, I want a BJ with my cart of groceries.

I am totally cheap too. Coupons, sales, and searching. I have designer taste and am too much of a Capricorn to EVER pay full price for anything. Plus, I have to shop for a living - I can be in and out of a mall like a scud missle. I don't LIKE shopping, but I love saving money. I make it work.

Getting a great deal is just like such a huge rush for me! And yes, I will go to great lengths to get a good deal, like getting up at obscene hours of the morning!

I just went through all my sale ads that came today in the newspaper and I honestly didn't see anything that would have interested me if I didn't already have all my shopping done. Seeing those damn carts which cost us between $55-65 each to build but WallyWorld would only offer between $10-$15 for each one we built...My rage against the baskets isn't aimed at Unarco, it's aimed at WallyWorlds arrogant attitude of "Either ya except our figures for each cart or we will take our business to your competitor who has already offered to manufacture the carts for less than our current contract with you..."

Why did I keep going to WM? In my hometown there was no where else to go for groceries..there was a mass exodus of grocery stores a few years ago - it's wal-mart and one other store which was way out of my college student price range...

****. There's one WM in the town where we both work (Chickasha) and for WM having competitive prices with other stores in the area that is so far from the truth...

Example-The Monday night before the release of SYW in 2003, I asked the clerk in WM's electronics dept. how much would the SYW disc be on sale for, to which she replied "It depends on how much the competitors in town are listing that cd for...", To which I replied "There's no competitors in town..." which was met with a smirky "Oh well...It will probably be at full price" (Which I saw the next day listed at $18.99!!!)

I dont see how college students at the liberal (Ohh, there's that word again) arts school USAO (University Of Science & Arts Of Oklahoma) can afford to shop at WM for the newest electronic releases & etc.

It seems that Wal-Mart came into my old town then had these amazing low prices...then the mass-exodus of other stores...and BAM WM prices went right up...jerks....

Thus, their (and just about every other large company's) business model  If it violated anti-trust laws for the airlines to do it in the late 80's and 90's (they coordinated a scheme to lower prices in markets where discount airlines were emerging in an effort to make them unable to compete - then it violates them now.

Again, I think if any business (or person for that matter  ) is analyzed too closely, flaws will be exposed. WM, however, seems to have glaring faults. WM needs to clean up - which they say they are doing. So, although businesses tend not to - I hope they do.

what they have done in every town in Oklahoma that has brought WM to town...

Matter of fact, According to an article on Yahoo.com I read awhile ago in OKC alone nearly 42% of the local grocerers near a newly opened WM Stuper-store have permanently closed shop due to loss of retail dollars...And once the competition closed the prices at WM slowly rose!

We, Deb & myself, Drive 100+ miles to OKC to shop for groceries at "Buy 4 Less", And we can fill our cars back seat for around $75 whereas shopping for groceries at the closest WM (26 miles from here) we can spend over $100 and not even have half as much as we bought at "Buy 4 Less"

When the local WM moved to their new location (After becoming a Stuper-store the Homeland that shared the shopping center closed shop...And it publicly learned that WM has an agreement on the lease of the now EMPTY shopping center as to who can move into it. A regional Dialysis facility? Yes...A regional retailer such as Atwoods? Hell NO!!! That is a sad sad FACT!!! Allowing no competition to move by tying up a lease agreement with possible legal redtape is bull****!)

Hee. That reminds me of what my dad & I do in Menards (a home improvement store). We play Jeopardy! with the doorbells until an employee says something to us.

And whenever I have a cart from a grocery store, I always have to go to the other aisle of cars and run over and shove the cart into the corral. Fun for all!

Sam Walton based Wal-Mart on a store here in Rhode Island. Wal-Mart moved into RI a few years ago. Guess what? That RI chain that WM was based on went bye-bye a few years ago. Sadly it was my favorite store.
I can't stomach going into a WM. :(

Wal-mart does suck.

I'll be up at 5 am, and I'm going to target. I'm getting Sara a Leapster for $70 with a free carrying case. That's the cheapest I've seen it on sale for. So, were hitting Target, Best Buy, and Toys 'R Us (have mercy on me  ) That'll be real fun!

And I'm a virgo, but I really suck at getting the best bargains. I just want to get it done, and go home!
