What's everyone doing for Thanksgiving?
I'm currently teasing my parents because they are going to Tennessee to be with my sick grandmother. All I was told was that their going to go take care of grandma for Thanksgiving, and for me to be sure that I feed their dogs while they're gone! They're not even worried about feeding me! I feel like a red-headed step child! (I'm totally kidding...) So, I'm going to my other grandma's here. I've been put in charge of broccoli casserole and a pie. Usually, Thanksgiving is at my house or my mom's, with lots of football and board games for the day. Or, cards and poker at a friends.
What are your traditions??

My mom tried to bribe me to come for thanksgiving, but after her recent harrangue about how disappointed she is how i handle my money (she's worked a total of about 4-5 years since i've known her) I decided to forego that trip. her birthday's the 27th, too, so i'm missing that. Mwahahahahaha!!!!
She tried the guilt trip that she also tried for my 30th b-day (it goes like this "*sigh*...maybe i'll see you sometime before you hit menopause") and i stonewalled her. I'm gonna laze around my house, do homework, and maybe cook something, perhaps visit with my friend. My mom is divorced from her mom, and the family i grew up with, so I probably won't visit them either...both of them are about 2 hours away. Luckily, i don't have a car, so even though they want to see me, i can claim i couldn't possibly get there.(i'm the only child, and was only grandchild for 15 years) Then i will sit around and revel in the fantasy that i sprang, fully formed, from some sort of giant exotic flower, not being conceived in the normal way by a "family". aaaahhhh, i can't wait! :D

I'm always told at work it's obvious that I'm an only child, whose mother didn't beat her enough when she was a child! One thing's for damn sure... we were everyone's favorite... fav niece, fav granddaughter, fav kid! We couldn't lose! And to think I have one just like me, only worse!

My Thanksgiving usually consists of spending the weekend with the grandmother who used to live fifteen minutes away from us, but she moved back to Michigan last year so now it's just my mom and I. Come to think of it, I don't think we've ever had a Thanksgiving with the entire family... weird. My dad claims he's driving down here next week -- last week he said he'd be here Sunday, earlier today he called and said Monday, and later today he said Wednesday. I wish he'd make up his mind! This year it's going to consist of home improvements -- cleaning gutters, putting in a new light fixture, putting in a new front door... and he says he wants to fry a turkey.
I always get up and watch the parade -- I used to get such a kick out of seeing cheerleaders and high school bands from all over the nation. As for food, I'm in charge of green bean casserole and pumpkin pie. Whoopie. But the biggest tradition of all -- Friday morning sales!! My mom and I have a tradition of going to Walmart at 5 AM the day after Thanksgiving -- talk about crazy, but it's fun. And everybody's over in toys and electronics so the grocery side is completely dead -- best time EVER to go grocery shopping.

I have to work  who the hell is going to be listening to All Things Considered on damn Thanksgiving....no one. I'm going to be talking to no one and reading news that isn't news because everything shuts down on the holiday...but yeah I'm not bitter ;)
The day after, however -my sister is flying out here from New MExico and we'll have a little Thanksgiving meal together and spend the weekend doing fun things... I'm SO excited - this is the longest I've been away from my family and definitely the farthest I've been from them - and then I get to go home for my b/day and Christmas :woohoo:

Actually, i wasn't so spoiled, my mom was a bizatch, so it was like a fun vacation to visit the fam. But people always say that to me, too. "oh, i can tell you're an only child" like it's a disease...I feel like saying "oh, i can tell you're a bitch..." :D

I always loved holidays at my grandparents...I wan't an only chile - but my sister (who's ten years older than me) was the first grandchild - and I spent a ton of time with my grandma growing up - so even though I have 8 cousins - I know my sister and I are my grandma's favorites....she's told my sister that...and growing up and even now some of my cousins are pretty jealous about it - I guess I would be too if the shoe were on the other foot...but it isn't :D

that sounds nice. other people's thanksgivings always trip me out. Like the sales thing. And the green bean casserole... We all used to sit around the table for the dinner, trade quips...My mom would look disaprovingly at everyone else who was drinking. And call my grandma an alcoholic. For hors d' oeuvres, there would be Salami, pepperoni (from Genova's, none of that fake ****) and crackers, cheese, chips, and black olives. My mom, uncle, and aunt would sneak away from my grandma to smoke pot...my great aunt would help with the cooking and be crazy...my grandma would pout if you didn't praise the food to the high heavens, and also compliment the lovely table setting...my mom would make irreverent jokes and everyone would laugh except my grandma...actually, i used to love thanksgiving...good times...my mom would try to watch football, while pretending to pay attention...

that sounds really nice. Big families trip me out, but it seems like a lot of fun...and, probably would have helped assuage my horror of children
I'm like "why are they screaming and being brats!? why are they talking so loud!!!? HELP! HELP!" :p As i stand by shocked and staring.... :p

Nope - growing up in a semi-large family did nothing to assuage my horror of children at all. When my sister had a kid - that helped - a lot. I'm not so freaked out by the mini people anymore.
Now the large family thing just stresses me out and it's totally forced and depressing - so I'm actually not completely crushed that I'm not going to be home for it :)

Ya, my mom, grandma, and I started that tradition last year, and I loved it! Had everyone in Wallyworld looking at us like we were nuts because when we lost eachother, someone would yell "MARCO" and someone would call back "POLO" just so we could find eachother. It was hilarious! But, since mom and dad won't be home this year, I'm afraid I won't be able to go because no one will be here to watch Sara. :distress: I'll figure it out!

I have a pretty big extended family - we switch off who's house Thanksgiving is at between my mom and her 4 sisters. This year it's at our house (oh joy), which means my mother will turn into a slave driver and will be screaming like a maniac while we are forced to clean the house spotless! Help!
I really need to move out!
We also have this thing where right after dinner, we go around the table and everyone has to say something they like about the person sitting next to them. It was a bit awkward one year, when someone had to say something about my oldest cousin's new husband, whom everyone hates. I think the comment was, "he has a nice truck." God forbid I sit next to him this year...

You sounds just like my mother! I swear, the woman can scream like no other. one neighbor actually knocked on our door to tell her, "if you're going to kill your kids, you might want to close the windows first." ah, dear old mom. Gotta love her.
Yeah, my cousin's husband is a major asshole - I almost fought him...anyway...
Hey, Stockton ain't that bad.... Nah, you're right.
BTWY, does anyone else have that one aunt or family member who never fails to make a disgusting dish that you are forced to eat!? YIKES

My great aunt makes great food, but she invariable does something unsanitary around it... :distress: smokes, coughs, you name it. Course, her and her sister (my grandma) are now estranged (yes, in your 70's, if your italian, you may become estranged from a family member) so she lives far away now. and of course my mom is divorced from my grandma.
Yep, that's my mom, too. GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN!!!!

I think family members becoming estranged may be something that crosses cultural lines lol - I come from a large Hispanic family - and I've at least two estranged uncles (though I think people may be talking to them since my aunt was diagnosed with cancer...who can keep up  But yeah - we ALL haven't spent the holidays together since I was in high school - and it was hilarious because it was SO fake...my sister and I just sat around and made fun of everyone - while my aunt got piss ass drunkand proceeded to then get into a verbal war with my sister (my sister won)....
Christmas was always the fun time - the adults were too busy with themselves...I tried my first cigarette, beer and whisky at my grandma's house...all on Christmas :D ahhhh...good times ....good times...

I think the holidays have lost their charm.
I never had Thanksgiving with my dad, ever. I ALWAYS went with my grandmom, whether to her house, another house or a resturant ( we did that a couple of times!)...never had dinner with my dad's family ( now they are all long dead)
Usually, it's over my grandmother's house. No one watches much football. No one plays games. Everyone sits around, talks and eats. We eat late too, like 6 or 7. Sometimes we walk afterwards and go on and on how tired we are. Last year, we got really drunk LOL.
It's always a good time. I am one of the youngest ( my brother IS the youngest.) We are the only grandchildren. My mom's 2 brothers and one sister don't have kids ( but are all married). They are all in their 30's ( I'm 27, my mom is 46) and that's it. VERY small family.

I have to go home to Kansas for Thanksgiving. It's an 8 hour trip, and I get to leave on Wednesday afternoon, right after work, whenever they let us out, and I'll leave to get back to work for Monday on Sunday morning. My best friend is going to drive with me, though- and when I say that, I mean she'll sit in the passenger seat and listen to whatever music I make her listen to for eight hours while we chain smoke. For some reason, people who can't or won't drive always gravitate to me, and I'm the damned driver. I had a boyfriend who couldn't/wouldn't, a best friend who simply won't, and my best friend at work is currently my charge because his license was taken away... AGAIN... for a DUI, so guess who carpools him to work and home every day and takes him grocery shopping? I f-ing hate to drive! /end rant.
Anyhow, my mom's cooking. It'll be a small group this year. My mom, my dad, me, and my grandmother. Normally my mom's brother and his new wife would come over, but my dad's on really bad terms with him right now, so they're out. My brother's...gone. Him being gone is going to make this holiday really tough, really bittersweet, really sad, really lonely- especially for ma and pa. It's my brother's favorite holiday, and it will be tough. I think I'm going to make my best friend eat two dinners, I'm going to make her come over so our group's a tiny bit larger, for a distraction.
The food should be good, though. My dad's deep frying our turkey... my diet's thanking him for that. Grr.

Agh Thanksgiving with the dysfunctional bull****ters. I know how the show will go already. It starts out with your typical greeting chatter but quickly turns into a miserable chaos of whining and complaining. After we eat the group breaks into two separate equally boring categories. Those that sit in the kitchen talking politics and those in the living room watching grown men in tights chasing each other for a damn ball.
My low life unemployed for 15 years brother in law will follow me around like a fly on **** to tell me about his headaches and any other disabilities he thinks he has. My brother the cop will complain about crime in Baltimore City and my Dad will ride my Mothers back showing everyone how much of a control freak asshole he can be.
About 2 hours after dinner my sister and I will bolt for the door to attend a real party. Every year my buddy holds a bonfire in the mountains on his property. Weather permitting we sit out under the stars and everyone who wants can enjoy the herb. I grew a very beautiful lady this year for the party. A 100% organic Sativa NL#5 cured to perfection.
After vaporizing this the atmosphere becomes a nice clear energetic talkative party. In past years we all opened up and talked about the universe and other possible dimensions. When you get a group of people ages 25-67 together and the thoughts are flowing it’s a quality conversation. We all bond together on a level I cant explain. The walls come down and we gel together with no negative feelings or need to complain. We all agree life is simply what you choose it to be and much less complicated if you live it humble and simple.
After the party I give those wanting a special holiday happiness package with an exotic blend of different herbs. My garden was lovely as usual and I must share. I must. :] I feel like Willy Wonka LOL :xoxo:
