Isn't it ironic, don't ya think? "Like A Rolling Stone" is Rolling Stone's #1??? It's great, sure...but???
Forget Rolling Stone. (Rolling Boulder)
What's YOUR favorite song?
I know. It's tough, but what's the FIRST thing that pops into your mind?
Mine is "Gimme Some Lovin'" Spencer Davis Group.
And ya wanna know something..."Go Your Own Way" is WAY up there for me too! :)

Aw, that's a fun one. Not my favorite song of all time evah!1!, but a good Blondie song.
I looove that song. It doesn't matter which version, live or studio. She sounds heavenly on it and the lyrics are to die for. I especially love these parts:
Night recalls tranquillity
A curtain falls and sets it free
Darkness calls eternity
Down silent halls the shadows flee
If you forgive me my ferocity
I won't forget your sweetness
Pull down the night
Lay it before me
Ratify my head with curses
I love when she does the spoken intro live and screams it out ("In the beginning, in the days before time, the light was alive with the essence of power").
Blondie - Hello Joe, Rules For Living
Rules For Living is another favorite. One of the best Curse songs. That and Songs of Love. I prefer Hello Joe live.

I love everything about these songs and will never, ever get tired of them:

That woman waylaid her career more cruelly than any record company could have done. But she still managed to write some great material (I even put one of her songs on my favorites list). She heads up a valuable Web site, too; you can buy PDF files of accurately arranged sheet music (including We Belong Together & dozens of others) for a small fee. The sheet music is delivered electronically within seconds. I ordered a large batch a few months ago & have been enjoying them all -- a lot of this stuff was never published, or published only in typically simplified "songbook" arrangements.

A lot of you have such bad taste, bless your hearts!
I thought, "What's my favorite song?" I can't think of one -- you know, one. Maybe it's I Love You Goodbye but maybe not. So I had to list a few dozen -- sticking only to the rock era -- that have all probably been my favorite at one time or another.
I Love You Goodbye - Thomas Dolby
The World Is a Ghetto - War
Come & Get Your Love - Redbone
Mothership Connection (Star Child) - Parliament
This Is Not America - Bowie & Metheny
My Back Pages - Dylan
Revolution - Beatles
Eleanor Rigby - Beatles
Glory Bound - Pigeonhed
Leave It Open - Kate Bush
Traces of the Western Slopes - Rickie Lee Jones
Ain't No Woman - Four Tops
Jackie Wilson Said - Van Morrison
All Saints Day - Van Morrison
Somebody to Love - Queen
Sax & Violins - Talking Heads
Biko - Peter Gabriel
For the Love of Money - O'Jays
Atlantic City - Springsteen
Young Americans - Bowie
Aladdin Sane - Bowie
The Working Hour - Tears for Fears
So Lonely - Police
And just for good measure:

Right now, at this very moment, it's "Your Silent Face" by those despicable Nazistic pigs New Order:
A thought that never changes
Remains a stupid lie
It's never been quite the same
No hearing or breathing
No movement, no colour
Just silence
Rise and fall of shame
A search that shall remain
We asked you what you'd seen
You said you didn't care
Sound formed in a vacuum
May seem a waste of time
It's always been just the same
No hearing or breathing
No movement, no lyrics
Just nothing
The sign that leads the way
The path we can not take
You caught me at a bad time
So why don't you piss off

Well I don't know... I think they are an acquired taste. They can be a bit depressing, Roger Waters lyrics always were. Some of Gilmours later stuff is a bit more optimistic. Coming Back To Life is a wonderful song..
The same person that informed Christy of Pink Floyd informed me too... Pissed I missed the '94 tour due to my lateness in discovering them however I did see Gilmour play Marooned, Coming Back To Life and Sorrow in London back in September with the same friend and I met Nick Mason in London in October with yet again the same friend....

maybe, but cousins where one rocks, and one moans and groans slowly to a dismal end...except money, and another brick in the wall. I really like the lyrics, though, i just don't like the music.

Love it. The Moody Blues have some GREAT songs. Others ones I love are "Tuesday Afternoon","Question","The Story In Your Eyes", and "Isn't Life Strange?"

I forgot two big ones- "Just Like Honey"- Jesus & Mary Chain and "I Wish I Had an Evil Twin" by the Magnetic Fields.
I Wish I Had An Evil Twin
I wish I had an evil twin
Running round doing people in
I wish I had a very bad
And evil twin to do my will
To cull and conquer, cut and kill
Just like I would if I weren't good
And if I knew where to begin
Down and down he'd go
How low, no would know
Sometimes the good life wears thin
I wish I had an evil twin
My evil twin would lie and steal
And he would stink of sex appeal
All men would writhe
Beneath his scythe
He'd send the pretty ones to me
And they would think that I was he
I'd hurt them, and I'd go scot-free
I'd get no blame and feel no shame
Cause evil's not my cup of tea
Down and down he'd go
How low, I would not need to know
All my life there should have been
An evil twin.
Hurrah!

Roger Waters' lyrics are sometimes "depressing" only because they speak the truth about life, and unfortunately in the case of living on this planet in modern times, the truth often hurts.

I think you'll find Amber.... that the Floyd is all about testosterone and lots of it....big guitar sounds, big meaningful lyrics, lots of lights and flashing things onstage with a suitable waiting period inbetween to keep the fans guessing :] ..all great entertainment
Case in point-I was there at the Nick Mason meeting with MFM and our  friend..I was definately in the minority as far as my sex goes...and I am quite partial to a bit of Floyd madness and genius on the odd occasion myself

I don't know who  is, but...of course i grew up with Floyd, and yes, most men i know like it. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. Wouldn't be a bad thing to be with a giant flock of men, that's for sure :p :woohoo: . A lot of people try to convince me or defend Floyd, but i already know they are good, i just really don't like slow, droning, depressed sounding music. And by depressed sounding, i'm not talking about the lyrics, but the music. I like faster, lighter music, for the most part. Their sound is (usually) very dirge like for me. It brings me down real fast. There are exceptions, of course, but it's a very dark SOUND to me. Like, music to kill yourself by  . okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but still :) :wavey: I like lights and flashing things, though...

This is soooooo freaky.
I am a Rickie Lee Jones fanatic!! I have the Flying Cowboys songbook, but I've never been able to source any of the earlier sheet music. Well, what do I find whilst browsing through RLJ's site but downloadable sheet music!! I seriously freeeeeked out because I was extremely skeptical about the quality of the sheet music. But.....
I downloaded the songs. Printed them out. HOLY ****!!!! I was floored. I printed:
"Company"
"After Hours"
"On Saturday Afternoons in 1963"
:blob1: :blob1: :blob1:
Literally- tears welled up as I played "Company" (my favorite RLJ song of all time). The chords and keys are exactly as performed.
JUST GREAT!!!! Happy, happy..... joy, joy.......

Keep It Comin' Love by KC And The Sunshine Band is probably my favorite non-Fleetwood Mac song. I dont know how anybody can listen to that song and not be happy.:)
On! On! U of K
On, on, U of K, we are right for the fight today,
Hold that ball and hit that line;
Ev'ry Wildcat star will shine;
We'll fight, fight, fight, for the blue and white
As we roll to that goal, Varsity,
And we'll kick, pass and run, 'till the battle is won,
And we'll bring home the victory.

This is very appropriate since the Kentucky Derby is this Saturday.
My Old Kentucky Home
The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home,
'Tis summer, the people are gay;
The corntop's ripe and the meadows in the bloom,
While the birds make music all the day.
The young folks roll on the little cabin floor,
All merry, all happy, and bright;
By-n-by hard times come a-knocking at the door,
Then, my old Kentucky home, good-night!
(CHORUS)
Weep no more, my lady,
Oh! Weep no more, today!
We will sing one song for my old Kentucky home,
For my old Kentucky home far away.

Wow! This thread was a blast from the past! I couldn't believe all the names that I hadn't seen on here for a long time. I was interested to see what my answers were back in 2004. Some of them still hold up (Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond) where others (Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand) don't get as much listen anymore.
Nice thread to resurrect - pretty interesting. I find it hard to name my *favorite* or top *favorites* of all time, so I'll just list 10 that I've been digging the most for, say, the past year or two. Not quite the intention of the thread, but I'll post nevertheless...
1. Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (still holding out the #1 spot with me for 10+ years now)
The rest are more contemporary.
2. The Bravery- An Honest Mistake
3. Louis XIV - There's A Traitor in This Room
4. The Shins - Phantom Limb
5. The Killers - Move Away
6. Scissor Sisters - Music is the Victim
7. Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
8. Band of Horses - Is There A Ghost
9. G. Love & Special Sauce - Baby's Got Sauce
10. Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To

Damn that is such a good choice! :blob2: I remember hearing this song years ago, and I never heard it again until I was in California, December 2007. :distress: But then I started listening to 1377 3MP (which effectively died on Sunday, becoming a talk show), and they played it a few times for me... :D
I've got quite a few songs jesting for higher spots on my favourites list, but at the moment I'd say my absolute favourite is a toss up between "Wild West Hero" by ELO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcSjCDxoBPY), and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd (as noted by Brad). "(The System Of) Doctor Tarr & Professor Fether" by The Alan Parson Project (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHNxBheFAt4) is also a candidate.
Once upon a time "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf was my favourite, and "Sultans Of Swing" by Dire Straits was second. :D
Other favourites include "Africa" by Toto, "Bitter Sweet Symphony" by The Verve, and "Message To My Girl" by Split Enz. I think I'd better stop there - this could go on for pages!

(19) "Nights in White Satin" Moody Blues
Love it. The Moody Blues have some GREAT songs. Others ones I love are "Tuesday Afternoon","Question","The Story In Your Eyes", and "Isn't Life Strange?"
I remember not too long ago in Chit Chat, we were all musing about them not being in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. WTF?!
They're obviously too good for that! Although if that's the case, then why were FM inducted? Conundrums, conundrums...
Damn, there's been so many posts with excellent songs! I'll choose a few of the more notable ones Ledgies have sent in, from my perspective:
"Imagine" - John Lennon (nothing short of the greatest song ever written)
("Sirius" &) "Eye In The Sky" - The Alan Parsons Project
"Bwana" - Lindsey Buckingham (more because it's such an unexpected choice, but I loved "Bwana" the moment I heard it myself!)
"Heart Of Glass" - Blondie
"I'm On Fire" - Bruce Springsteen
"Ain't No Sunshine" - Bill Withers (my second favourite song on the station Magic 1278, after "Only Love Can Break A Heart" by Gene Pitney)
"So Far Away" - Dire Straits
"Don't You Forget About Me" - Simple Minds ("Promised You A Miracle" is my favourite of theirs)
"Baby Can I Hold You" - Tracy Chapman
"Sister Golden Hair" - America
"Castles In The Air" - Don McLean (he did so many wonderful songs, but my favourite of his is "Everybody Loves Me Baby")

I love this kind of stuff, and reading what everyone else puts
1.Fleetwood Mac-Fireflies
Just wow. I can't even describe how much I love this song.
2.Brand New-Soco Amaretto Lime
The lyrics mean so much to me, love this band.
3.Fleetwood Mac-Thrown Down
Again, just wow.
4.Utada Hikaru-Simple & Clean
Ever since I first beat Kingdom Hearts 1 years ago, this song has always gave me chills.
5.The Smiths-There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Morrissey is a legend. The Smiths are even better, and this is their best song. I first heard them in a Brand New song a few years ago, and have loved them ever since.
6.Stevie Nicks-Outside The Rain
"It's just one more link in the chain"---next tattoo
7.Playradioplay!-Even Fairy Tale Characters Would Be Jealous
Takes me back to an amazing relationship.
8.Random Thoughts-The One That Got Away
Takes me back to that same relationship.
9.Garbage-Parade
Love Garbage, and this song is an amazing take on life.
10.Chiodos-A Letter From Janelle
Again, love, love, love this band. They are legends imo. They helped shape what is modern day "screamo", and they were very groundbreaking in the beginning. Sad to see them break up after such a short time together.
Honorable mentions:
Tracy Chapman-Fast Car
Placebo-Hemoglobin
Placebo-Peeping Tom
FM-Beautiful Child
Marilyn Manson-15

Okay, definitive top five-and-a-half list:
1. Fleetwood Mac- Rhiannon. Always. She's the undying love whose name I'd tattoo across my chest. Or did tattoo across my hip. Same difference.
2. Bruce Springsteen- Thunder Road. It's my absolute favorite love song. I'm not quite sure I want to know what that says about me, but I love the way he managed to make realism romantic.
3. Tori Amos- Playboy Mommy. "Those angels can't ever take my place" was runner-up to my "taken by the sky" tattoo.
4. The Beatles- While My Guitar Gently Weeps. This one keeps me grounded when I've gone off the the histrionic deep end on the last three.
5. Damien Rice- 9 Crimes. Gorgeous, heart-breaking, relevant in more ways than I want it to be.
and 1/2- Jewel- Hands- The other songs make the list because I think the music and lyrics combine to express a feeling perfectly. With Hands, I'm in love with the lyrics, but the music leaves me wanting more.
