Jackson Hit With $3 Million Lawsuit

Former porn producer says star is dogged by drug, money problems
NOVEMBER 17--Claiming that Michael Jackson is a drug- and booze-impaired deadbeat, a former business associate yesterday sued the singer for more than $3 million in unpaid loans and producing fees. In a blistering Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit, a copy of which you'll find below, Marc Schaffel claims that the star's need to hit him up for cash "accelerated when Jackson's increasingly more frequent excessive use of drugs and alcohol impelled him into irrational demands for large amounts of money and extravagant possessions." Those bizarre purchases included luxury cars (a Bentley and a Rolls), a $600,000 bauble for Elizabeth Taylor, and a $1 million appearance fee for Marlon Brando. Schaffel also claims that, following the September 11 attacks, he gave Jackson $500,000 in "emergency cash," because the performer thought he might need to "take shelter underground somewhere with his family." Before entering Jackson's inner circle a few years ago, Schaffel was best known as a producer of gay porno films like "Cocktales" and "Man With The Golden Rod." According to Santa Barbara prosecutors, Schaffel plotted with Jackson to silence the boy who last year accused the singer of sexual molestation. While not charged, Schaffel has been named as an "unindicted coconspirator" in the indictment. (12 pages)

Jacko is a nut-job, but I don't believe all of this. I mean, c'mon. He is not the type of person to borrow $500,000. He's probably got that kind of steak in his sofa a la pocket change.

I agree, he is weird, a freak. But I dont think he is in drugs, not that way at least.

I think media give too much importance to MJ. Well, he does nothing to keep discret, anyway. When I see the old MJ (from J-5, Off te Wall, until Thriller, and compare it with the current one.. it's so sad. Where did that guy go???

Well, when he had the first sex scandal, he went off to rehab for pills

I agree - I really liked him really up until "Black and White" and still like all those old songs. But, he is WAY to weird for me now.

I've kept hearing in the last year that he's pretty much flat broke, so I wouldn't put it past him.

I wish they had a 'freakshow!' smiley.

Yeah, that's what i heard, too. And I think some of it's true. And I don't care what happens to MJ now that i know what he "likes to do" :distress:

He's so off the deep end. A drug addiction would explain some stuff. People do mental things on drugs. His plastic surgeon may also be his dealer!

Sorry, but I have a hard time believing that anyone who owns all that Beatles music (and all the rest of the various music rights he owns) has a hard time scraping up half a million. The truth is stranger than fiction, but not in this case.

All the more reason to believe that he wouldn't have to ask for half a million.

how is that logical. Just cause he has a raging spending problem, doesn't mean he has enough money anymore to cover it. And some people have tons of money but still they ask people for money, never have cash, don't tip well, and on and on...so it could be that, as well.

True, but maybe he didn't want these loans or advances or whatever "on record". Can you imagine having to write, "I need the money to take my family to seclusion in an underground bunker because of the terrorists" on all the paperwork? And then the media gets ahold of it.

As for the drug addiction, it's well-known. On one of his recent albums he even had a song that repeated the lines, "Oh God, he's taking Demerol..."

Seriously, I think MJ may have cash flow probs from time to time, but The Beatles sold way into the millions last year and have for many years and they are no the only rights this guy owns. Remember, he has been making millions a year since for about 25 or 30 years.

When you have as many assets as Michael Jackson, get back to me. When you have tons of the Beatles catalog and your own catalog to your name, I'd like to see you borrow $500,000. The man obviously has enough money to maintain his playground out back and enough money to invite hundreds of random fans over for free gifts, free rides, and free food. He obviously has enough money to continue his million-plus shopping sprees. He might be having financial problems, but his kind of financial problem is having $500 million instead of having $600 million. There is no way in hell that Michael Jackson had to borrow $500,000. For all we know, that figure is for studio/producer fees or in-studio perks, but it certainly is not what Michael Jackson borrowed. I believe lots of things and find him to be crazier than a ****house rat with rabies, but believing that is like believing that Batman truly exists.

Then this porn producer is going to have a hard time getting back his $500,000 if it's not documented.

From what I understand, Jackson doesn't own the rights to the Beatles songs and hasn't for quite some time now..

From what I remember he sold them on to Sony for a heap of money years back.. I can't remember exactly how much though... I think he bought them off McCartney for about $50 million and a few years later sold them for about $300 million.. Thats why Jackson and McCartney had a major bust up after they were "pals". I think Paul felt rather pissed at being shortchanged by MJ.

It's a while ago so somebody can go hunt the net for the details, I haven't got the time. I need to sleep!

I wouldn't be surprised if Jackson was broke personally, he's a serial spender and millions of dollars to him is like hundreds to the rest of us..

I'm just glad the trial judge has seen through all the bull**** and is pushing ahead with the hearing in January. The more excuses and obstacles the defense lawyers keep coming up with to delay this case the more I'm convinced he's guilty personally.

I'm not about to get into a huge debate about MJ coz I tried that before and at the mo it just seems like too much hard work.

BUT...

MJ does still own HALF of the Beatles catalogue and HALF of Sony music. so i find it hard to believe that hes broke. Sony arent too pleased that MJ is earning money from their artists (such as Destiny's Child) so they therefore tried to sabotage his last album Invincible so it would flop, he would therefore lose money, he would therefore have to sell his share of Sony back to them.

Thank you and good night.

Well, I read an enormous article about his financial troubles last year. It was in either Rolling Stone or Vanity Fair. The gist of it was that in regards to his stake in all of that publishing, he had leveraged enormous loans against future earnings. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-600 million from Bank of America, or as I call them - El Banco Diablo. Plus, his own music has not been generating the kind of cash flow it used to. He has little cash flow, period.
The end of the article summed it all up by saying that while he isn't BROKE, he is essentially living on loans and that his current income doesn't quite cover the payments. His ASSETS would, but his income doesn't. Basically, he's cash poor. Kind of like the US government. People in this kind of predicament rarely lose everything, but it is a strange way to live.
I think the truth of the situation is closer to : He is worth 1 billion, and his debts are about 700 million. He is mortgaged within an inch of his life. While the scale of the money involved is mind boggling, the concept is simple. He lives beyond his means. In spite of the numbers, it sounds like a house of cards to me.

Everytime I read about a celebrity that lives beyond their means, I wanna vomit. I would like to think that if I were super rich, I'd have money in the bank (like I do now) and live a decently modest life. I wouldn't be buying 7 million dollar vases to stick in a corner to collect dust.

If I were super rich, I'd wanna travel the world most of all...build my dream home...but FIRST, I'd take care of my family and friends. :)
