View Full Version : Fleetwood Mac Solo Or With The Backing Band

I was watching the Live in Boston DVD and I gotta say that while the muscians that backed them on the tour are all very talented I wish the band would leave them behind on the next toour as we are paying to see FM and not Fm plus how ever many back up singers /musicians they have. It just doesn't work for me. I like music and the concert I saw was good but I wish they would go back to the days when it was just the band and not all of this grand production.

I agree, Matt. It's one thing when it's Stevie solo but having all those backup singers on a Mac tour is unnecessary and excessive.

I agree 100% Matt. I've asked before, and of course no one can answer- "WHO decided that bands can no longer go out as a 4 or 5 piece?" Around 1990, ALL these backing musicians somehow slipped their collective arses onto the stages.
I think the blame started with MTV. But now, with all the lipsyncing, etc, I think it's what the public has come to expect. A live performance that sounds 98% like the record. Warts not allowed.......bull****, IMO. I frequently do sound for COVER BANDS that have up to four backing tracks! The last one I did had a guitar track; a keys track; a percussion track; and a BIG vocal track(all the high notes, and high harmonies were on it).
Welcome to perfection, friends....

Oh, and while I at first only replied regarding backup singers, it's true of the other musicans too, as Matt pointed out. Ray's always been around for songs like GYOW, but when I see Lindsey not even playing on Stand Back, I wonder if they've gone too far in that direction, too.

If they insist on going back out on the road, leave the kit and caboodle at home. The back-up singers are cloying and fill-in for the lead singers too much, while the back-up musicians spoil the songs. Too many cooks spoil the soup. They totally butchered I Know I'm Not Wrong.

Ray's always been around for songs like GYOW, but when I see Lindsey not even playing on Stand Back, I wonder if they've gone too far in that direction, too.Yeah, Ray & Jeff & Tony used to play with the band, too, but it was a piddling minority of songs, in the first place, & in the second, it in no way shape or form affected the quintessential sound of just the four members of the band. It's not even worth comparing the techies who played in the old days with what happens nowadays -- there's just no comparison at all.

I guess ever since the '87 tour, Fleetwood Mac went digital. Not only did the extra musicians & singers troupe out for the entire show, but the hardware backstage increased exponentially. All of it en masse changed the whole dynamic (for the better or for the worse, depending on your own take), & the sound of the bandmembers themselves, dumped into a big sonic goulash, took on a completely different flavor.

All those back-up musicians create a surreal effect to me, it's like to see two bands play at the same time. I'd like to hear the real Fleetwood Mac's sound live today without them. But if you could choose, would you eliminate all the non FM components or just some? What about the keyboards? I'd vote to keep Brett and the singers.

I think you'd have to keep keyboards without Christine because the music needs that. It's kind of a backbone, especially on the older bootlegs so that Lindsey can be free on the guitar without it sounding too awkward.

If you think about it...a lot of what the other musicians do might be compensating for a lack of Christine. If Chris was there you wouldn't need the backup singers for the harmony. I don't know it was just a sudden thought...but they all seem to have mics.

I love the old bootlegs and the sound and the space in the music but I don't know if it would work today. My only concert experience has been this past July and I think I was too much in awe of my music idols to really focus on the backing band at all.

I'd keep Brett for obvious reasons, but I'd can the background singers in a heartbeat. They're rather annoying and I'm sick of the band relying on them for almost all harmonies and high parts.

I'd keep Brett for obvious reasonsIMO, it's not that important whether you keep Brett or not if you're going for the old sound, but it's essential that Brett's gear be downgraded. If you're going for the retro appeal of Fleetwood Mac in the late 1970s or early 1980s, a Korg Triton has no business onstage. Racks mounted with dozens of modules are sheer overkill: Fleetwood Mac songs aren't Emerson Lake & Palmer songs.

Brett could outfit himself with an acoustic grand piano, a B3 & an electromechanical piano of his choice (preferably dedicated if it's electronic), & he could reasonably simulate the old days. I think the music would have a lot more charm, too. Imagine hearing "Sara" or "Dreams" with Mick (& only Mick) on drums, John on bass, Lindsey (& only Lindsey) on electric lead, Stevie & Lindsey (& only Stevie & Lindsey) on vocals, & Brett (& only Brett) on electric piano & organ. I dunno . . . . I guess some fans would love it & some fans would hate it.

In my own case, I might be more tempted to see the band when they rolled into town.

Word. All they do is sway around. And all Jana does is shriek and make girl-in-closet-in-The-Ring-face. And that's not attractive.

However, if Elisecia ever came out of hiding? Sign me up.

Hmm...well one of the things I noticed the first time I heard LIB (with no live experience) was that the druming wasn't as "on" as with The Dance. I don't notice it as much anymore though.

I'd say keep Brett and just Sharon to make up for Christine's harmonie. My biggest gripe with the extra musicians is they're there when they aren't needed. The biggest example is Second HAnd News. They have FOUR guitar players on SHN! I don't know about you, but I don't think SHN is that complex of a song that 4 guitars are needed. I'm pretty sure Lindsey's the solo guitar player on ISA. And I think it's just Lindse, Mick, and John in the first 2 minutes of that song. That's one of my favorite moments of the show, when it's just the 3 of them jamming almost.

I would like to see them without all the backing band. I go to see an FM tribute band here in the UK and it's just 5 of them. And the sound is amazing. No need for any extras. Would love to see FM doing it that way. Of course they would have to get Christine back..... ;)

Mick isn't the greatest drummer around, so any diminishing of his drumming talents is quite obvious.

Me, too. Actually, i'd let one go. (not sharon) But to be honest, I think Stevie's voice needs the support, or she thinks it does. I think one would be plenty, because i don't like how the backup singer's tones are so pure, i think they take a lot of the edge out of the vocal...

to do to see this is watch any of the better filmed bootleg videos of the 2003-2004 tour. It's really strange to see a second drummer on stage (Steve Rinkov) to thicken the percussive sound.

Do any of you more technical people like Brian, David and Chili know exactly HOW MUCH help the BG musicians are giving Mick and Lindsey. I'm going to take a wild guess and say Mick is getting more drum help then Lindsey is guitar help. We can safely say John is the only Mac member going it alone. He's the lone bass player. Something for John to be proud of.

I have of the 2003-2004 shows Mick is definitely benefiting more from the backing percussive musicians and with the 2 extra guitarists (Three if ya consider when Brett Tuggle plays acoustic) it seems Linds' doesnt have to carry much of a load rhythm guitar wise as he would in the older touring days (1975-1982) and can focus more on leads & vocals.

I agree, John does it without a net...God bless the bass players!

Lindsey's getting more help than you think. Listen to all the guitar chording going on during his solos. Listen to the Buffalo boots, when his guitar isn't working during Come- the other descending guitar riff that's still being played. Listen to LIB, when he's slapping the neck of his guitar with both hands(which, btw, sounds like crap, though it's barely audible), there's still plenty of "proper" guitar sound in the mix, and it sure ain't coming from Linds...
So Christine left the band, and it took ten people to replace her........ :woohoo:

That's because Stevie sings way too low on SYW.

I enjoyed IKINW live, but it just didn't have any spark to it. It's a very simple song that they turned into a theatrical slap-dash and it just ruined it, IMO.

The original is maybe more layered then the live-version. It's just a shame that they took every layer and sorted it out for the live-arrangement. Lindsey should have said STOP here...."I'm playing live, I'm not in the f*cking studio AGAIN!"

But in spite of that....I think the original spark is still there live......

I think it is kinda screwy to get "hired guns"...every ex-guitarist of Fleetwood Mac is still around, so why don't they get, let's say, Rick Vito & Bob Welch to come back into the band? Play a couple of THEIR songs during the set as well ("Hypnotized", "Got No Home" )...plus, Bob & Rick could trade off doing a couple of Peter Green tunes, as well. Welch with "Oh Well", Rick with "I Loved Another Woman"...add "Rattlesnake Shake" as an encore song.

I totally agree with this.
I don't think IKINW is a simple song at all, I think Fleetwood Mac's problem of late has been trying to produce the layered sound they have in the studio live, which is why they need all the extra players.
Personally if I wanted to hear the record I'd stay home and listen to it When I go and see a band live I want that rawness that comes with it.
Enough of the polish please. Saying that they are still an incredible live band but I wish they'd lose the backing band.

well....I sort of think the same....

Totally drowned out Stevie and Lindsey. That's a problem with the live mix, not the women singing. It's almost impossible to adjust what you're doing onstage -- whether it's singing or playing -- to create a blend for the FOH (front of hall). It's all in the mixer's hands.

I've always scoffed when fans say "Stevie rocks!" because she's a "vocalist" these days instead of a rock singer. She obviously leans toward the adult contemporary blandness side of things on her albums & in her live shows. She uses very bland, mainstream players like Carlos instead of rockers -- but that's been mostly true since she started in '81.

I know theres a lot of lindsey fans here that were just excited to see the song becaise it was on tusk. I really did not like it when i saw them in Mansfield. I enjoyed Dreams more which is second to last on the last of songs which i emjoyed the most  .

It had not pizazz or any special quality to it. Eyes of the World was so much more fun and awesome. Stevie looked bored on IKINW and so was I. They could have picked a better "unknown song". I think Thats Enough for Me or Miranda would have been better.

And Lindsey & Stevie DON'T clash?

I think a Welch/Buckingham collaboration would be AWESOME. Just listen what Lindsey did with "Sentimental Lady" for Bob's French Kiss album...and then on the Tango album, "Mystified" is more than casually reminicent of Welch's "Safe Harbour" on Heroes.... I think they'd definitely challenge each other out of their 'comfort zones', that's for sure, but that kind of "clash" only seems to work for the better.

I think a Welch/Buckingham collaboration would be awesome, as a Welch/ Nicks collaboration or hopefully a Welch/Buckingham/Nicks one... so if all this would be possible without a War Of The Roses scenario (not entirely sure yet :p ), I can only wish it would happen sooner or later.

That is exactly the point...for them NOT to be just "backing guitarists", but to add some of their tunes to the mix, as well. I'm really not a fan of this "Buckingham Nicks" disguised as "Fleetwood Mac" charade....time for Fleetwood Mac to take their entire history into consideration. Not just from 1975 onwards.

The better Fleetwood Mac albums have at least THREE songwriters (with only Mystery To Me as the exception).

I haven't seen much of LIB yet or heard much of it.

All I can say is that it has a much different sound... partially because live music changes every decade, but also because the backing musicians really change it.

Without Chris, you've got Brett (who didn't even play parts correctly on The Dance) faking her parts. (Hire me for crying out loud!) As for what someone said about the Triton--he's using that as a contoller to get Rhodes sounds, Pianos, synth (Stand Back) and samples. Remember, Christine has been using a MIDI controller since Tango with a rack-load of modules... it's not too different, and it kind of makes sense.

I also don't like what I've heard as far as the backup vocals. Particularly on Go Your Own Way, LIB... It's just terrible.

My original comment was: "If you're going for the retro appeal of Fleetwood Mac in the late 1970s or early 1980s, a Korg Triton has no business onstage."

I'm sorry but I have to stand by that. Nothing against Korg -- I've bought & liked the occasional Korg! In fact, I use a Korg piano in my Fleetwood cover group. The Triton is certainly a magnificent piece of equipment, but it has no business in a setup if folks are going for late '70s Mac style.

one blatanly obvious moment is during SYWon LIB where the whole time they sing th chorus you barely hear Stevie or Lindsey. It isn't really untill the end that you hear them at all. Shame. I wonder if Mick realizes the he isn't the man he once was and is now trying to keep FM going by bringing in other people to hide the flaws in the bands performances. I beleive that someone should be there for the keyboards, but that is all.

I was being sarcastic, in reference to Lindsey's quote of when he left in 1987, how it took two guitar players to take his place.
Get it?

It wasn't Lindsey's quote; It was something some writers said. When Lindsey was asked to comment on it some time later, he said he thought it was actually unfair to the band, but funny. ;)

Yes I sort of remember him saying something like that. He was a little bitter when he left.

Oh, I don't think bitterness has anything to do with it. I believe any member of the band would find the sentiment of that fairly amusing if something similar was said about them. ;)

I'm actually thinking about his generic comment. Nevermind. :sorry:
