I've been reading Anita Shreve's All He Ever Wanted (she's the author of The Pilots Wife which I'm fairly certain was on Oprah's book club). It was an incredibly slow starting book but her narrative is impressive and i'm nearly through now. I have to find a new book...

Harry Potter Books Sold By Accident (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/harry_potter_early_sale;_ylt=Av7FOfiblh.DwW6__zS1u9ys0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3ODdxdHBhBHNlYwM5NjQ-)

COQUITLAM, British Columbia - A handful of people in Canada got a sneak peak of the latest Harry Potter book, but a British Columbia Supreme Court judge ordered them to keep it a secret.

The book was sold to 14 people who snagged a copy of J.K. Rowlings' much anticipated "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," when it landed on shelves last Thursday at a local grocery store.

The book, officially set for release this coming Saturday, has been shrouded in secrecy and its debut has been highly orchestrated to enable everyone — readers, reviewers, even publishers — to crack it open all at once. It's the sixth in Rowling's seven-book fantasy series on the young wizard.

But the store slipped up and sold 14 copies before realizing its mistake.

"It was an inadvertent error on behalf of one of our staff," said Geoff Wilson, a spokesman for the Real Canadian Superstore. He said the books were quickly removed.

Justice Kristi Gill last Saturday ordered customers not to talk about the book, copy it, sell it or even read it before it is officially released at 12:01 a.m. July 16.

The order also compels them to return the novel to the publisher, Raincoast Book Distribution Ltd., until the official release. At that time it will be returned to them.

As an added incentive, Raincoast will include Rowling's autograph and a gift pack.

A Fine and Private Place by Peter S. Beagle. Its a weird little fantasy about a man who lives in a cemetary and converses with the recently deceased. Oh yeah, there's a talking Raven as well. I'm enjoying it.

Also, Ulysses by James Joyce. I'm not enjoying it.

Weird. I should read that.
uh..."Voices of the Winds - Native American Legends" and I just started "Mortal Love" by Elizabeth Hand, who is one of my favorite authors.
Yeah it's definitely a strange little story, but it's really well written and provocative. It's been out of print for years now, I had to check my copy out from a Library in a whole nother city.

Whoops, forgot to add I'm also reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, and re-reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. Yeah I'm reading four books at a time. I'm a freak.

Also, Ulysses by James Joyce. I'm not enjoying it.

!!! I'm sorry. Can I suggest that the reason you may not be enjoying it is because you're reading three other books at the same time? Ulysses really demands full attention, and book of annotations or at least a guide through the schemata never hurts the first time around. It's not a book that necessarily can or should be read the way you read most other books, and it can definitely be a very unenjoyable experience if you're not totally clear on what's going on in each chapter. How far along are you?

As for me, I just started a book called The 13 1/2 Lives of Cap'n Blue Bear, which so far is very entertaining and funny, and kind of an adult-children's adventure the way Harry Potter is. It's German, but I think it's being published in English, at least in the US, next week.

Just interested to know what books people are into right now...

I'm currently reading Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. Has anyone read it before? It's quite verbose and has a quirky narrative style. The book is interesting to say the least. Kind of tedious, though.

Oh, sorry I never responded to this! I actually did not get very far into Ulyses. I believe I only finished the first hundred pages or so before, out of either boredom, ADD, or distraction, I just quit reading and returned it to the library. However, I have been thinking of picking it up again. We shall see.

I just finished the "Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen. As I wrote in another thread, I liked it a lot and I would highly recommend it . I 'm guessing it's very well known in the US.

Before that, I read the "Atonement" by Ian McEwan, which was very good and it had a really good and moving ending. I was surprised I liked it, because I didn't care much for "Amsterdam", by the same author.

Now I 'm reading "The Green Knight" by Iris Murdoch and I 'm horrified: I 'm running out of Iris Murdoch books!!:)

Sorry if this has been posted already but I think Ulysses was intended to be read in 24 hours---ya know since the book takes place in a 24 hour period?
Of course you don't have to read it in 24 hours but I think that was Joyce's metatextual intended purpose.

Lasher by Anne Rice and I'm almost done. Next I'll be reading something about organizing or finances or something. Resolutions.

I also ready Triad around Christmastime and found it entertaining. It was too short though, the end seemed to crash in on you, like the story wasn't completely told yet. Also, Stevie is not as prophetic as she'd like to believe, when you read Triad, you do get a feel for the myth of Rhiannon.

I was just curious to see what my fellow bookworms were into right now.

I've just finished Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. It's a very strange but interesting book about two English magicians in the last century. A very long read, but it was engaging and enjoyable.

:wavey:

I've just started in on Jonathon Strange & MN and I think it looks wonderful! I like the illustrations, too. Also just started Odd Thomas -I received that as a Christmas present more than a YEAR ago! Guess I'd better get STARTED with that! There's a sequel to Odd Thomas b t w - I forget the title at the moment - Forever Odd?

There's a REALLY wonderful book I read awhile back called Beach House by Pat Conroy - absolutely first-rate writing, i.m.o., and the story's kinda deep and told in a really heartfelt, sincere way.

I like Atlas Shrugged better. Narcissus and Goldmund seems to think it's making a deep or complex or insightful point, but it's not. The story is okay, though.
Warning: Ayn Rand is making a point, too, which she drives home like it's a bulldozer on practically every one of those 600 (or whatever) Atlas Shrugged pages. It's still really good, though. There's a nice suprise at the end.

I have read "Tracks", in fact that was the first one I read (I think it was for a class) and then I read "The Beet Queen" and "Love Medicine" My favorite so far has been "Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse". She is a prolific writer, and I haven't read all of her work.

There are some good interviews with her on KCRW's Bookworm. http://www.kcrw.com/show/bw*If you haven't listened to that show, I recommend it. The host is a former wonder-boy student, (I think he attended Columbia) and he still prepares for his interviews like he is at the head of the class. As a result, his careful reading, and insights surprise and delight the authors, and he manages to get just about anyone he wants to come in for an interview. It is like sitting in on a really good class, and always rekindles my love of literature. He most recently interviewed David Foster Wallace, and John Barth, but all of the shows are archived.

I read it while on a cruise in the Mediterranean. I also read it on the flight over and on the return  Seriously, it is very long and you have to read all of it as opposed to some dome store novel. But, it is well worth the read, esp. the foreword in the book and if you do a little research on her life.

Harry potter and the goblet of fire was the first of the series i've read and i will read the first 3 (i do have all 6 books) after i have read the last one.
I made the mistake With the goblet of fire of finishing it just before i saw the film, and all you do than during the film is compare it to the book for better or worse, i should have known better after the same thing happened with grisham's the pelican brief and Tolkien's The Two Towers.
That is why i want to finish this fifth potter book way before the film is finished and i'm not even going to read dan brown's the Da vinci Code , atleast not before i see the film.

I really enjoyed that book. It was hard getting into it initially (I just thought it started kind of slowly) but once I did, I was hooked. And thankfully, it is on a list of books I have to review for my Diversity class. Which means, I can re-read it!

In addition to all of the heinous reading required for graduate school, I still find time for recreational reading (at night before I go to bed) and right now I'm reading A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving. I've been wanting to read Marley and Me - I hear it's a MUST for dog lovers.

And The Devil Wears Prada. That book INFURIATED me. But I enjoyed it, it was much more effective than the movie. Enjoy.

Oh, you HAVE to read it. Hell, I'd send it to you if I hadn't loaned it out. It is THAT GOOD!!

Why did TDWP infuriate you?? I'm only to like, chapter 4 or something. I put it down a few weeks ago and haven't picked it back up. Too busy lately, but maybe I'll read a bit tonight :)

Well I should say that it infuriated me in a good way. She wrote the Miranda character beautifully - and as much as I like Meryl Streep - she did not go anywhere NEAR the Miranda in the book....

I'll be interested to see what you think when you get farther in....I did enjoy the book - but good gosh that Miranda character....ugh.

Then there's this other one, Computer: The History of the Information Machine, which is decidedly less interesting. :p

one of the best books i've ever read. very sad, though. be prepared.

i'm reading a book about political life and how the federal liberal government worked for 10 years in ottawa, called "the way it works: inside ottawa." when i finish that, i'm going to start a book called "full circle" about the federal conservative party.

(yes. in case it wasn't already wildly clear... i am a political nerd)

From Publishers Weekly
Theater manager Santopietro writes a decorous, dry analysis of "überdiva" Barbra Streisand, examining five decades of recordings, concerts, film, theater and politics. He analyzes Streisand as a "walking mass of contradictions," parsing those paradoxes through critical readings of her professional and personal gambits. Just as Streisand's "Brooklyn-ese" fades from her rich singing voice, so her stage and studio persona—tightly controlled—masks a diffidence in the limelight that just feeds her fans' interest. For these folks, the seminal sound bites of her career, from "Hello, gorgeous" to "So long, dearie," constitute the narrative's few flashes of energy, evoking Streisand in more glory than can be conveyed here. Santopietro astutely embeds his subject in cultural context to underscore her zeitgeist appeal; her brash urgency and in-your-face ethnicity, epitomized in "the nose," endears her to those out of the mainstream, including feminists and gays, and, in the '60s, augured the demise of pre-Vietnam dormancy. A prototype of postmodern celebrity, Streisand cultivated her own image, embellishing her "ugly duckling" myth through autobiographical roles. The author's discerning, nuanced critiques of Streisand's works depict a career of subtle evolution not without its setbacks, shedding welcome light on her uneven reception over the years. But his scholarly cant will perplex readers expecting a juicier read. Photos. (June)

Review
Rosellen Brewer Library Journal :
Santopietro, Tom. The Importance of Being Barbra. Thomas Dunne Bks: St. Martin's. Jun. 2006. c.256p. photogs. bibliog. index. ISBN 0-312-34879-7 [ISBN 978-0-312-34879-3]. $22.95. MUSIC There is no doubt that Barbra Streisand has enjoyed one of the greatest show business careers of all time. But with countless biographies of the songstress already in print, why add another one to the collection? This book by Streisand's ultimate fan, theater manager Santopietro, is different, less a biography than an analysis of the star's recordings, films, theatrical career, television appearances, and concerts. Though occasionally over the top (he calls Streisand "Babs"), Santopietro holds strong opinions on all things Streisand that are usually right on. He observes her successes as well as her bloopers, e.g., what was she thinking with A Star Is Born? Only one thing nags at the reader: who is this guy? Does having stage managed a couple dozen New York City shows give him the credentials to critique La Streisand? But anyone who ends an analysis such as this with a "career scorecard" grading each of her efforts is worth reading. Cheeky and essential to a well-rounded Streisand collection, this book is highly recommended for public and academic libraries alike.- Rosellen Brewer, Sno-Isle Libs., Marysville, WA

I don't read too much fiction. Over the holidays, I indulged myself in Courtney Love's "diary" book. It doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense, it's basically just random pages from her diary with very little commentary form her. There are some cool pictures and it does look pretty on my coffee table. I like the cover.
I also bought Joe Eszterhas's new book, The Screenwriter's Guide To Hollywood or something like that which is an execise in suckage. I liked his last couple of books but this one blows and I don't want to read about how he banged Sharon Stone (again).

I saw Fleetwood there for the very first show of the SYW tour. It seemed like a nice little college town, very green, very middle class America. And then I went to this cool shopping development called Easton? I think. Instead of being inside like a mall the stores were in a main street fashion. The weather was warm, the men were very attentive, fell all over themselves to help me and upgraded me to a suite when I was checking in. They even let me use their business center after the show so I could come online and see what everyone else was saying about the show. I don't know that I could live there but it was lovely and I'd certainly go back and see FM there again.

I've never seen the series, but am going to rent it probably next weekend. I saw a clip on YouTube and was already annoyed that it was COMPLETELY different than the book...different characters, characters doing different things...

But I'll give it a chance, you can't really tell a whole lot from a 2 minute YouTube clip.

I am looking forward to seeing it, I need to just open my mind and realize it's not going to be exactly like the book.

The scene I saw on YouTube had fiddler in it, complaining to the Massa about the whipping of Toby or something...it was odd. Though fiddler was in the book, he was never in it in that context...
