So there's this story on NPR as I type about the possibility of amending the constitution in order to get rid of the requirment that a presidential candidate be born in the U.S.

SO it looks as though the Republicans are also looking to 2008 already...

Any thoughts on this??

Everytime someone mentions the hypothetical "Arnold Amendment," it always makes me think of the Sylvester Stallone/Wesley Snipes movie "Demolition Man," in which Sly wakes up in the year 2032 and learns that Arnold Schwarzenegger had been president "while he was sleeping."

Personally, I'm more in favor of Arnold as a Republican candidate than say ANOTHER FRIGGING BUSH (Jeb), Frist, Romney, or any of the other names being thrown around. At least Ahnald has more moderate/liberal leaning views on social policies-- pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro-environment...

PS. If they're going to change the constitution to amend the presidential requirments, they should also get rid of the EC, whose usefulness has run its course.

Sponsored by Orin Hatch of Utah. No way it's going to happen. Possible argument? Osama Bin Laden could run for president.

Another possible argument...Hitler was Austrian, yet elected Chancellor of Germany.

well the story on NPR interviewed some Republican whose name I didn't catch and he said there was no way he would ever support Ahnold because he's too liberal - especially on the social and "homosexual issues"

Absolutely not, and I truly hope that people see what an abysmally bad idea this is. Why do Republicans call themselves conservatives when they're constantly trying to rewrite the Constitution? What exactly are they conserving?

Good point  Some of their rewrites though is to keep it conservative instead of changing with the times.....

Hey, I'm all for progress and change, but I just don't see the point in amending the constitution so much. I've only been alive since 1981, but I swear I cannot remember an Administration (Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, Duh-bya) wanting so many freaking amendments to the constitution.

Their right to circumvent the rights that the constitution affords all the rest of the citizens... :wavey:

Say Arnold wasn't a factor in this. Would anyone support this Amendment then? Isn't it sort of a discriminatory requirement? I mean, with the exception of Native Americans, weren't all our ancestors immigrants?

y'all are descendant of immigrants (I'm Cherokee so "nyah nyah nyah nyah"...Just kiddin' y'all!)

That's what cracks me up about supremacists...They seem to forget nearly ALL Americans are descended from immigrants!

Nope. I have to believe that there is a crop of decent presidential candidates that were born right here in this country. There are approximately 298,718,213 of us. What do you think the odds are?

Fine--let them do it. But in exchange, we get to change the amendment that says you can only serve 8 years--that way we can run Bill Clinton again in 2008! :)

But what if there's a better candidate who was born in a different country? Why should't someone like Teresa Heinz Kerry be able to run?

I think so. I mean the main reasoning behind the born in the US req. was so an Englishman (esp. King George) could not be Pres. I think we have moved past that

Schwartznegger/McVie 2008. Hmmm, that might be interesting. The terminator and... the bassist( ). And they're both non-Americans. Austrian and British. Too bad McVie has no experience at all.

Okay, back to the real world. I think Schwartznegger/McCain would be a damn good team. No more extremist for the Republicans please! I don't want Hillary to run because so many people hate her. I hope there's a dark horse in the Democratic party because Obama still needs experience.

McCain is rather extreme, but I agree that if we're forced to endure Republicans for longer than four more years, I'd like to have the most moderate. I nominate Olympia Snowe.

As for Obama, I don't like him one bit. I can't put my finger on it, but there's something about him that's incredibly phony and fake; his speech at the DNC turned me off big time, especially the Godspeak. He does nothing for me and I doubt he ever will. He would never get my vote for president.

Dollars to doughnuts, we're going to nominate a southerner. It wouldn't surprise me if it was Edwards. If anyone more conservative than Edwards is nominated, they won't get my vote. I'm sick of this ****. <end-rant>
