View Full Version : Ashlee Simpson: SNL (Sat. Night Lip-Sync)

The funniest thing just happened on SNL. For Ashlee Simpson's second "performance", the audio guys cued up the wrong track for her to lip-sync. She got really embarrased and ran off the stage, leaving her poor band to stand there and make WTF faces at each other.
Her first performance was "Pieces of Me", and her vocals sounded EXACTLY like the CD, but the band was live. I've seen bits of her MTV show, and I know she can't really sing like that live. I was assuming her second set would be her current single (I forget the name). But instead, a single drum track cued the band, and then her recorded "Pieces of Me" vocal started AGAIN.
She was obviously shocked and didn't know what to do. So, she just danced around a little while the vocal and drum track played. Then, the band decided just to go with it, and started playing along to try to save the performance. Instead, Ashlee looked like she was about to cry and ran off stage...
The real kicker? The end piece when everyone is on stage saying goodbye just came on... Ashlee blamed it on THE BAND for playing the wrong song. She just laughed it off as live TV. :distress:
Yeah, Ashlee, it's THE BAND's fault you can't sing worth sh*t...

Oh, I'm sorry! I forgot about the time-delay. Didn't mean to spoil.
How much money would you like to bet that they edit it out?
Also, the NBC/SNL message boards have just crashed -- people are PISSED!!! And Ashlee's taking a beating on her website's message boards.
And, for the record, my take on the whole thing seems to be what most people find so offensive: SHE BLAMED HER BAND ON NATIONAL TV. How pa-the-tic.

But, the whole affair just hit the Drudge Report and Howard Stern's website, so it's not going to simply go away.

Copied from Ashlee "Sync"son's website:
Lucky Magazine: What are your takes on lip-synching?
Ashlee Simpson: I'm totally against it and offended by it. I'm going out to let my real talent show, not to just stand there and dance around. Personally, I'd never lip-synch. It's just not me.
This is funny in so many ways. First, she DID lip-sync her first performance. Second, when her next song got f*cked up, she just stood there. Third, when she didn't know what to do, she started dancing around, then ran off stage of a well-respected, legendary live national TV show.
Then...??? She blamed her band!!!
Thank God for TiVo and the Internet. Now, if we could only catch someone important in a career-crushing lie ... like Bush.

Hmmm, I don't actually know who she is but I'm guessing that's a good thing. Judging by what you've said, I'd hate to support such a lame excuse for an 'artist' but half of the time lip syncing is at the production's request. Chris Isaak was here just a few weeks ago and he was complaining that he had to lip sync for some presentation. I'm sure it's a little different for him, performing with a his band who no doubt know how to improvise and fix the situation should something go wrong, as opposed to just standing there looking stupid when the tape cuts. There is a famous incident of this here from last year. Billy Idol made a fool of himself at the football grand final. It obviously reflects on the 'artist' and had it gone wrong for someone like Chris Isaak, he too would have looked like the idiot despite that fact that he and his band would have been more equipped to actually play the song originally. Having said that, I'm guessing this girl isn't quite in the same position to favour a live performance.
Thank you, Lux, for bringing that point up. I would never have thought that lip syncing would be at the production's request. It is very unfortunate that Chris Isaak had to lip sync on that occasion. He is a naturally talented, pure musician.
(Chris Isaak just happens to be one of my favorite musicians, and despite the fact that I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I've never seen him live; I'd jump at the chance. I believe that, in his case, he would do anything in his power to not lip sync a performance.)

Looks like she was "Milli-Vanillied". Her running off stage made me think of the performance where they were caught lip synching and their grammy was taken away!

Oh my! I just watched the video clip and I almost feel bad for her. I feel worse for me because I actually purchased her record this summer! I wonder what Stevie would say if she saw this. What I want to know is, why did she need to lip sync? Her vocals on the record are gritty and flawed and I would hope she could at least carry a tune and be able to do such an easy song that didn't exactly require much vocal ability. This was sort of cringe-worthy and I feel bad for her. If more people find out this could really damage the career of someone who seemed grittier then say Britney Spears!

I watched it on CNN. What she should have done was just said "Stop and let's start this over." I remember Elvis Costello doing this on live tv, it may have been SNL. But then, he was actually playing the song. Watch the clip. No bass player in sight, yet there is a bass playing somewhere.

My theory is that the band was playing live and they track playing was just the vocal track. It's been established that Ashlee's not all that talented in the voice department (remember the recording studio parts of her show? yikes!), so I'm guessing she opted to sing along with a pre-recorded track.
I also heard that she started out the first performance by singing over the backing track, then they cut her microphone.

I have no doubt that the guys in the band were playing live. The were extremely confused at first, but were troopers and really tried to save her by playing along once they figured out the pre-recorded stuff wasn't going to stop. Poor guys. Especially since she tried to make them take the fall for it on national TV...

As soon as I heard about this I knew you guys would eat it up. :) I think it was very unprofessional of her to blame her band -- it's not their fault her audio guys cued up that track and they just went with it. Not to sound cruel and heartless, but I hope the media eats her alive for this. And if she lip syncs on there, you know she's done it before. I know for a fact Britney does -- my debate coach's son was on the production crew for one of her shows one night and he told me that the audience hears very little, if any, of Britney's actual vocals. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the same kind of situation.
One of the music production communities I'm on started talking about this late last night and someone posted the video in .wmv format -- if anyone would like it, I don't have anywhere I could post it online but I'd be more than willing to email it to you. :wavey:

Did anyone see her on the RMA's last nite? She made fun of herself, acted like her band was playing the wrong song at first - all the announcers made a point of saying, "coming up LIVE, Ashlee Simpson." She did indeed sing live last nite. In a brief interview with Carson Daly, she said she had "acid reflux disease" and had become hoarse that day. She apparently got a cortisone shot from Wayne Newton's doctor in Vegas, enabling her to sing live last nite. It's all on cnn.com.

It was funny in that they screwed her up with the tape, but geez, this news is everywhere...did I miss something or did she murder someone?
Okay, she lip synched, and nobody else does.
Her (as well as Tim McGraw's) "singing" on the RMA's was ugh-inducing, so perhaps she should have lip synched last night too.
They bumped my fave DJ, Kidd Kraddick, probably for Ashlee, pretty much off the show, after he was supposed to intro Tim McGraw, so PFFTT to the RMA's!
