View Full Version : Stevie Q&A on the Nicks Fix
Did anyone know this was going on right now? I just saw it in the updates yesterday. I'm hesitant to submit a question - her answers are very "maybe", "it was great", "possibly", "someday", "i'd love to"....i mean, this is from a woman that writes constantly? I'm afraid of being let down by her rather short and blah answers.

The ASK STEVIE thing has been an ongoing Q & A she has done for the last few years, every several months or so she answers some more questions...Nothing new really.
Although I didn't know she had answered a few more questions..thanks for sharing

I think the subject of reissuing her catalog is new. She says sometime next year. Hope that sticks!

Q: Long Way To Go is one of my favorites, Stevie. What were you trying to convey in that song?
A: I had to go a long distance.

Oh, yeah....
This is one of my personal favorites:
"Question 82 - from Anonymous:
Poets, Legands, Priests of nothing. I love the vibration of these words together. I would greatly appreciate the true meaning of "priests of nothing."
Stevie's answer:
It means the master of nothing. "
Gee, Stevie, thanks for that indepth analysis....

Although, you can't really blame her when she has to answer excruciating questions like this:
"Question 73 - from Alex:
Stevie,
Why do you say 'this is for you, daddy' before you sing Landslide (live)?
Thank you, Alex
Stevie's answer:
I was dedicating the song to my father, who was in the audience that night."

Holy crap- what was John Kinney thinking when he passed that one along??

Out of all questions submitted, why in holy hell would she decide to answer this? Her blonde dye must be seeping through her scalp and into her brain.

  Maybe no one should ever ask her about her lyrics. To bad we can't ask stuff like "so, what kind of f**cked up nut is Joe Walsh really?"

I asked long ago (years) about the meaning of Sisters of the Moon (mentioning what I thought in the lyric interpretation).
But my question was never posted. I asked about it, they told me all questions are always send to Stevie. But in the same answer they told me that after a gap (I think th Enchanted tour, or the TISL tour, can't remeber) they made a new list, batch of questions, or something like that. So at the end I don't know if my question was discarded or not, was received by Stevie or not.
Anyway, I think my question was more interesting than the one about the "daddy dedication". In fact I found a lot of silly questions

I'd imagine that she hand writes quick answers on paper and then faxes them back to John. I doubt she uses email, though she is one of the few people in the world who still uses a typewriter
The other theory is that there is a "ghost writer," like Stevie's assistant, answering the questions. That might explain why the responses occasionally seem impersonal.

i really think that's what it is....when i read those responses i just can't imagine that's Stevie writing them....it's more like a Stevie pod from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."
Q: who is the "Beautiful Child"
A: i saw a child that was beautiful when i was writing the song.
Q: what's "Storms" about?
A: nasty weather.

I really dont think its her answering these questions. Any regular fan could answer the majority of the questions and i can answer mostly all of them. Pretty sad but true.

This is my favorite.
Q: Why is Doing the Best I Can subtitled "Escape from Berlin?"
Stevie's answer:
The musical part of the song is kind of scary and it reminded me of having to escape from somewhere.
What the hell? How lame.
Ummmm...I love you, Stevie. :xoxo:

The few he posted in the beginning were handwritten, he posted pics of the notes she sent in..so that is probably what she does. Although according to Christine she emails Stevie frequently, and according to John Kinney Karen answers Stevie's emails for her, and relays messages so...yeah she probably faxes her responses.

I think she just thinks up image words that she likes that give a visual of how she feels, then sort of strings them together. Like painting a vague emotional picture. With very little actual narrative content. Some of her lyrics are better than that, some worse, but that's about the median. I personally like it, I kind of think about my emotions that way, too - and I don't want some big plot to follow, or some giant message to think about  I'm not reading the news, after all  So, really, when she answers "it reminds me of having to escape from somewhere" that's probably really the extent of her feeling right then...she felt she needed to escape...it's probably not much more complex than that. And she probably had some picture in her mind of bleak east berlin, and blah....

Well, Christine mentioned in a recent interview that she and Stevie e-mail each other sometimes, which is kind of adorable. So apparently she does do e-mail.
But yeah, the tone of her Q&A answers seems distant to me too. I would suspect what happens is that John e-mails her assistant the questions, then the assistant reads them aloud to Stevie and jots down some quick responses, then sends those back.

I would hate to think that, though it's certainly a possibility. Yes, the answers are brief (LB is an absolute gem when it comes to answering that Q&A stuff, isn't he?!), but stop and think how busy Stevie is and that there were probably 1,567,328 questions submitted and she is maybe thinking she would like to get through them all someday. True, I am sometimes disappointed in the answers, but I'll take that over nothing. I think too that when it comes to questions about lyrics, it can be hard to convey in words because it invlved such strong feelings or that it is felt the lyrics should stand on their own.

I agree, maybe the assistant or whoever he/she is gives us an unrequested summary of Stevie's answers. She definitely wasn't that telegraphic in her beautiful "thank you letter" for the birthday wishes.
