View Full Version : The best of the Klonopin years!

If you had to make a "Best of" album from Stevie's Klonopin years what would you include? Let's say this era is from Tango in the Night to Street Angel. I think that is about right.

Here's mine:

1. Affairs of the Heart
2. Seven Wonders
3. Welcome to the Room Sara
4. No Questions Asked
5. Doing the Best that I can
6. Rooms on Fire
7. Ghosts
8. Long Way to Go
9. Freedom
10. Sometimes It's a Bitch
11. Blue Denim
12. Rose Garden
13. Paper Doll

She really made some good songs I think!

1) Rooms on Fire
2) Ooh My Love
3) Blue Denim
4) Affairs of the Heart

Seven Wonders is decent, yet annoying. I didn't include it because the song wasn't hers.

That's it. This period was just substandard for her. :sorry:

Okay, I'll add Rose Garden.

Really, the Klonopin years only consisted of Behind the Mask, Timespace and Street Angel.

Most of the songs from Tango in the Night and The Other Side of the Mirror were written before she was dragged down by Klonopin. The Tango songs were trainwrecks from her coke/booze recovery. The OSOTM songs, for the most part, were probably her only moments of clarity during that time. So, for me, it's hard to clump them all together and pull out a top ten list.

I hope you're adding Rose Garden to the substandard category, cause that song blows chunks. And i like Street Angel. :wavey:

 I'm not going to include the Mirror album in my list because she wasn't suffering from Klonopin too bad at that time. And there are only two songs that I really can't stand on that album, Ghosts and Two Kinds of Love.

1. Greta
2. Street Angel
3. Just Like A Woman
4. Affairs of the Heart

That's it.

The album? clearly you like it to, only you like the song from the other side of the tracks then where i come from... My faves are Kick It, Blue Denim, Greta, Just Like a Woman, Love is Like a Rivah is ok, and yes, Street Angel is ok.
It's just mellow stevie. I've had it for 8 years or so, and i got OSOTM about a month ago - i still, overall, like Street Angel better...maybe someday love will change my mind, but...

I'm not that big on OSOTM, either. Actually, SA is not my least favorite Stevie album. It's RAL.

Yes . Great song, but the regular version is a bit flat IMO. I prefer her demo#2 and those from BTM because she risked there a bit more.

It's so sad when you see glimpses of how well she was doing post-coke but before the Klonopin took hold. The '87 MTV Awards in Australia come to mind. She seems SO happy and clear.

My understanding is that she underwent Klonopin rehab in 1993, by which time she'd recorded most of Street Angel. I think she's stated that after leaving rehab, she went back and re-recorded some vocals -- but it wasn't enough to lift the album as a whole out of its Klonopin haze.
As for when the SA songs were written, when you think about it many had already been lying around for years by the time she recorded them (Greta, Destiny, Rose Garden), or else the music was written by others (Blue Denim, Listen to the Rain, Maybe Love, Unconditional Love, Just Like a Woman, Kick It). I think "Street Angel" and "Jane" were the only new, non-cowritten songs from the album -- both pretty icky, IMO.

Jane was co-written with Joel Derouin. The two Stevie Only Songs were "Street Angel" and "Love Is Like A River".

Right, of course. I was forgetting to think of how long it took to record that album.

MAybe her songs on OSOTM aren't klonopin induced, the interviews are. Some of them are just painful.

There was one great one she seemed really up but the rest she is a total zombie.

I love Freedom, Second Time, Blue Denim, Paper Doll ( klonopin induced?)Greta the most.

Maybe some unreleased stuff from that time is worth throwing in (or out ... or up), too, like "Tragedy of One's Own Soul," "Dial the Number" & most of all "The Crystal."

Here's a thought --
If she was klonopin-free and felling better on the SA tour, then how do you explain those hazy, lifeless interviews on Jay Leno & Letterman (and even those on MTV where she's wearing the pink curtain and has overly-wisped hair)? She was SO subdued and sleepy acting. NOw her TV performances of Blue Demin were great, but those post-song interviews.... hmmmm. Anyone else notice this?

You thought she seemed hazy and lifeless in the Leno and Letterman interviews? I thought she seemed really clear-eyed and... well, I don't want to say "energetic," but I definitely don't think she seemed lifeless.

Now, on Leno, she was definitely out of breath for the first several minutes after the song, and was answering his questions with head-nods and whatnot. But I think that had more to do with the extra pounds she was carrying, than anything else (also, wasn't the Leno appearance filmed the same week as the 'House Of Blues' radio show, when she was suffering from bronchial/asthma-related problems?).
After that though, I think she kicked in.

But since those shows are filmed in the afternoon, maybe she just hadn't "brightened up" yet.

Still, I didn't think she seemed "hazy and lifeless." And certainly nothing like the Entertainment Tonight/E!/CNN interviews for 'Timespace,' when she was at the height of her Klonopin fog.
Of course, anything Post-'Rock A Little' does seem subdued by comparison... it's almost like it would be if Robin Williams suddenly gave a sedate interview!

By the way, what's the "pink curtain/wispy hair/MTV" thing? I never saw that. :(

Yeah, by watching her, sometimes i think she actually is SHY in certain situations, and i know for sure that the extra pounds would probably exacerbate that in Stevie...and without coke? You know, coke really is the confidence drug...
And, of course Robin was a coke head as well...

I don't know for sure whether or not she was under the influence of the Klonopin while recording/writing The Other Side of the Mirror. Yet, while listening to that album, it's clear much has changed. Not only is the manic energy of "Imperial Hotel" and the rest of Rock A Little absent, but also Miss Nicks seems to be fighting something. There's a veil, or "long nets of white," between the listener and Miss Nicks to me. She's fighting for her life, for survival, and desperately trying to break through. It isn't just that her voice is wizened...I can tell that the creative spark is in danger of being extinguished.

That said, The Other Side of the Mirror is a lovely, affecting album, one of my very favorites.

i think 'the other side of the mirror' is the best written solo cd of her career, the songs just are Stevie at her best, for me. I don't hear a glaring 'this should never have made it to a major-label release' song on it, which i do hear in the relatively recent 'That Made Me Stronger' and 'Silver Girl'...

As for the Klonopin, i had a talk about it with my shrink, who said the drug is highly beneficial when taken properly, and i kinda believe her because she's been knowledgable in helping me with medication issues.
i asked my doctor about the drug when i saw that she had a klonopin mini-poster framed on her desk during my session, lol.
Not that i disbelieve Stevie's opinion of the drug, but i would think for her to have been on the drug for years and years, there had to have been a time that it was beneficial for her, and that may have been during the OSOTM era. my doctor said IF the patient increases their dosage, or abuses it, it's a dangerous drug but that could be said of any pharmaceutical, and that for someone who may have abused cocaine and alcohol, it's not a stretch that it's possible they'd also abuse the Klonopin, but its "not the drug's fault". My doc also told me that some people can, and do, remain on the drug for many years with no adverse side-effects and that it isn't ONLY short-term use that Klonopin is prescribed for.
