What are your thoughts on this?
Is it just as bad as the bar scene?

I'm opposed to it just as much as I'm opposed to the bar scene. I have a few friends who are convinced that it's far better than the bar scene, and that doing lots of chatting allows them to actually get to know someone, and getting a picture in an e-mail from that person enables them to decide if they're attracted to him or her. But I think my friends fail to recognize the obvious fact that everything said in a chat could be a complete lie and photos can also be fake. I suppose I'm really cynical, but I always assume that people who intend to deceive others gravitate towards those online dating services and they're full of deceptive people as a result. So, I'm really encouraging. :p

i've never tried it (the online one) but i had friends who met really great people. This was back awhile. But i met my favorite boyfriend in a bar. And some others. it's fun to flirt in person, and besides, it's not the same to drink too much when you're online  Plus, online, how will they see your butt?

It's a good thing! I met my husband that way....we'll be married 5 years next month. Turns out after we got chatting online we realized we lived down the street from each other and we grew up having some of the same friends.
And ... to be more karmic... before I started talking to him online, I saw a REALLY cute guy as I was walking into the mall one Saturday afternoon...I always remembered how cute he was and he held the door open for me....turns out he was that guy!!!!! No kidding. And to toot my own horn, he remembers seeing me in the gym that summer and he thought I was so cute, too! lol ;)

I tried it once and only once. I began to trade e-mails with this guy who worked in a town near where I live. He sounded great on paper and via e-mail--he was a Senior Management person at an important business near where I live. He was cute, he had a great sense of humor and we seemed to have much in common. Then we met. What a complete asshole! He was a real control freak who ordered my meal for me at the restaurant (without asking me what I wanted, by the way) and then proceeded to tell me how he thought that FDR was the worst president the US ever had and how Ronald Reagan was the best. It went downhill from there. At the end of the dinner, he asked me, "So are we going to have sex or what?" Uh--no. He called me a couple of times after that and e-mailed me several times but I was so not interested! I'm resigned to never dating again, pretty much at this point. I don't do the bar scene and I work at home and rarely get to venture out because of the long hours I spend working. I just don't have enough spare time to get involved too much in any outside interests. I do get to travel for work from time to time but that's about my only opportunity to meet anyone new and I know from experience that long-distance relationships just don't work out so I guess my odds of finding anyone at my age (just turned 40) are pretty much 'nil. My philosophy has been that if it's meant to be, it will happen. If not, I'm pretty happy being single. I certainly make enough money to support myself, I love my job, and I'm happier than I've been in years, so. . . .

Online dating just seems so unromantic to me. But that is just my opinion. I don’t care for personal ads either. It just seems like looking for a job interview or something that is just not spontaneous.
However, if you met someone from corresponding online like from a message board or a chat room or an online pen pal that might be different. I have a friend here in RI who had an online pen pal for a few years and now they are engaged. It is very hard however because he lives in England and is trying to get things straightened out with his family so that he can come over here to live. He has been over here a few times to visit and my friend went over there to visit him this past August.
That is a rare instance however. I have chatted with people online who seemed very nice and when I met them in person were fruit loops. That is a just regular online pal not dating either. That makes me a bit reluctant to try dating online.
I have met some very nice people through the Fleetwood Mac boards who were just as nice in person. Some of them are even good friends now.
Sometimes I think the key to finding someone is to just not be looking. That makes it too difficult. If you are doing something else (chatting online about music, cooking. etc or going out to a concert or baseball game) and you happen to meet someone I think that is the best way.
But what do I know.
Good luck.

I think it just depends....I've know people who've had horrid on-line dating experiences...and then a friend of mine in Indiana who met her husband through an on-line service.
I think it depends on what kind of on-line dating service...it would seem to me that paid services are probably better than free....because if someone's willing to pay money they must either be serious about meeting someone...or just a sicko waiting to find some to take advantage of ;)
I hate the bar scene and I've not tried on-line dating...but thankfully those are not th eonly ways to meet people....
I've met two very nice men (okay one very nice - the other was a jerk) since I've been here in my new town...so luckily I've not ventured to even try bars or on-line :)
