Bush aides deny Internet rumors he was wired

CHANHASSEN, Minnesota (AP) -- Bush campaign aides are laughing off widespread Internet suggestions that President Bush was wired during his first debate with John Kerry, to get help from advisers.

A photo taken during the September 30th event appears to show a small, boxy shape between the president's shoulder blades.

Musings on various Web sites suggest it could have been a radio receiver so the president's aides could feed him answers during the debate.

Spokesman Scott Stanzel calls the idea "ridiculous," and adds, "Some people have been spending too many hours looking at left-wing conspiracy Web sites."

He adds, "Did you hear the one about Elvis moderating the third debate?"

But seriously, if someone were feeding him answers, don't you think he would have done better???

It doesn't help that he isn't even six feet tall. ;) Kerry is a whopping six inches taller than he is!

And I'm curious to know what that bulge is, it's obviously a wire.

yeah, but you know, it's not like he has enough hair to cover an ear piece. Something in his ear would been noticed. I was going to say maybe they both had earpieces to make sure they could hear the moderator and each other clearly, but you would have been able to see them....

but if it were a WIRELESS earpiece, why would there be a wire under his jacket? I'll have to ask my husband when he gets home...he's in TV, and might be more familiar with the different battery packs/earpiece things. But I agree the govt probably has stuff regular TV folks don't. But I still don't know what the wire would be for if it were a wireless earpiece...

Actually, it could have been a wireless earpiece, hence the receiver. They make them so small that they are virtually undetectable.

I think the Repubs should have used a John McVie "styled" cardboard cutout (That was used in the "Tusk" video) and stood him up against the "Munster man"...And just have a tape player behind the Prez playing on a loop the word "Duhhhhhh"!!!

Thank GOD for the MLB playoffs, Cause the debate on the other night was boring as s**t! Btw, I think Bush lost that one too...

During the first debate I remember thinking it was weird for him to say "wait, let me finish" when no one had interrupted and he still had plenty of time left. Some speculate he was telling the person in his earpiece to slow down. www.isbushwired.com is an interesting read.

Personally I think it's just a rumor, but I'm glad the news networks are running with it. If he is being coached whoever's feeding him lines is doing a piss poor job of it .

That is my youngest puppy-dog. Her name is Bubbles. She is a fawn and blue long-haired Chihuahua. Her "long hair" didn't really come in, so she's more 1/2 and 1/2, which makes her coat velvety soft- like cashmere. She will be two years old this December 15th. Well, it seems to me that he's wearing a radio receiver. I don't think they were expecting it to be noticeable because he was wearing it in a black suit in the center of the back seam. But once he got onstage and under those lights, it was obvious. Plus, you can clearly see the wire/antenna going up his back:

WAS IT A SEAM

William Hunt, who owns a tailor’s shop in Savile Row where bespoke suits cost between £2,000 and £3,000, insisted that no suit or shirt would form such a strange ridge.

“Without a shadow of a doubt, I would say that he had some kind of wire running up his back underneath his clothing. Not even the seams on a cheap suit would look like that. It must have been some kind of transmitter.”

. . . OR SOMETHING ELSE?

If it is not a radio transmitter, feeding killer lines from the political adviser Karl Rove into an invisible earplug radio, what is President Bush’s back bulge? The possibilities are:

A TENS machine
An unusual hearing aid
A back brace
A security tag
A bullet-proof vest
A satellite tracking device

Perhaps Kerry should make his first statement at tomorrow night's debate to insist that Bush remove his jacket, lift his tie, and clean out his ears to prove to everyone that he's not wired.

That puts Bush in a Catch-22 -- if he's wired, he proven to be a cheat. If he's not (because he decided not to wear it to avoid any more embarrassing photos), he'll stumble all over his upper lip like in the first debate.

Trail Tales: Bush's Pompom Days

Wednesday, October 13, 2004

Election Day is 20 days away. The third and last presidential debate takes place Wednesday in Tempe, Ariz.

Edwards Knocks Bush's Pompom Days

Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., (search) has a theory about what was hidden underneath an unusual wrinkle that appeared on the back of President Bush's (search) suit jacket during his first debate with John Kerry.

"I think it was his battery," a grinning Edwards told Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" Tuesday.

"I think tomorrow, before the debate, John Kerry ought to pat him down," Edwards said, referring to the final Bush-Kerry match up, scheduled for Wednesday in Arizona.

Making his second appearance on the comedian's stage this year, the Democratic vice presidential nominee was in turns silly and serious while chatting about issues from Iraq to chubby Secret Service (search) agents.

Leno asked Edwards if he could beat the president in a foot race.

Edwards, who said he jogged about five miles Tuesday, reminded the audience he played football as a student; Bush was on a cheering squad.

" was on the side, with his pompoms," Edwards said. "I don't know, can you run fast with those cheerleading outfits on?"

During the first debate between the presidential candidates, a camera glimpsed what looked like a rectangular lump between Bush's shoulder blades. Bush's campaign aides have laughed off rampant Internet speculation that the president was wired to get help from advisers.

— The Associated Press

More Charges of Election-Related Violence

Based on reports from both sides, campaigning can be dangerous business. On Tuesday, the Kerry campaign came out with a list of 12 incidents of vandalism or other crimes against Kerry supporters and offices.

The Democratic National Committee (search) and Kerry campaign reported three of their own in Arizona, Florida and Nevada. The other nine incidents were reported by the press in Florida, Lousiana, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

Among the incidents, DNC and Kerry staff said five people in Pensacola, Fla. reported to the campaign that they had bricks thrown into their windows of their cars. In Phoenix, a glass door to the office was shattered and the place turned upside down. In September, computers, CD-ROMs and palm pilots were stolen from Kerry's campaign office in Las Vegas.

The press reports included incidents of spray painting on Kerry property, broken windows and light bulbs, burnt and torn-down signs in support of Kerry-Edwards and stolen laptops.

The list comes one day after the chairman of the Bush-Cheney campaign had written a letter to the president of the AFL-CIO (search) complaining that the union's protesters have participated in acts of violence and creating an "intimidating atmosphere" for Bush campaign staffers and supporters.

A number of other incidents, not related directly to the union, were also described in the letter. They included rocks thrown through windows, laptops stolen and even shots fired at the door of an office in Knoxville, Tenn. The shooting took place very early in the morning when the office was empty. No one was hurt.

Did y'all know too that the Bush campaign folks insisted in their original 32-page debate agreement that there could be NO shots taken which would show the candidate's backs? But the networks refused to go along with that--while the campaign's might have agreed on the debate rules and the camera shots, the networks did NOT sign onto that and as a result, that's how those shots got out there in the first place. But it does make you wonder--why is it that the Bush campaign was so insistent on no shots being taken of Bush's back?

I mean, as a woman, I can tell you that I don't want someone getting a shot of my ass, since it's bigger than I would like it to be, but you know--these guys had on suit jackets which hide a guy's butt pretty well. I can't think that Bush was worried about how big his hips would look on the air or anything--so what was he worried about?????????

The only thing keeping me from being 100% sure (as opposed to 99.99% ) is that why would the WH pick such a large one? Wouldn't they have access to far smaller ones and certainly the CIA, FBI, etc. have tiny ones. That just does not make sense to me. He may well be wearing one, but a vest will not make that kind of bump on his back. And if the WH wants to say he isn't wearing one, it just lends more credence to the belief that it was a receiver. ;)

Oh, I agree. :)

It was not a mic. I love it when people try to put down the president by coming up with outlandish, liberal accusations. It rescinds the validity of your opinion. I don't think he would have made it on the stage with a "wire". That's just what I think.

PS..GO KERRY!

You think someone was gonna frisk W  Now frisky Bill probably would have wanted to be frisked when he debated (that sounds dirty doesn't it  ) - but I do not see Rove letting ANYONE touch the Pres. AND - notice they have denied the accusation but did not say it was not a device of some sort

In sum, there is no other logical explanation for what appears to be a transmitter underneath his jacket.

The only thing keeping me from being 100% sure (as opposed to 99.99% ) is that why would the WH pick such a large one? Wouldn't they have access to far smaller ones and certainly the CIA, FBI, etc. have tiny ones. That just does not make sense to me. But, I think it is some type of device and his stammering lends creedence to someone talking in his ear while he is trying to talk.

No it wasn't. It was a receiver for his earpiece.

And if the Kerry camp was smart, they'd have techies backstage interrupting the feed. It ain't that hard if you know what you're doing.

Maybe they did during the first debate. Remember "Wait, let me finish" with 30 seconds still on the clock?

As his presidency comes to a close, I'm going to have to acknowledge that, yes, he was in fact president, no matter how he got there.

 Good point.

And when he asked if his time was up after using only 30 seconds of his two minute period. ;)

I'd rather just refer to him as "the occupier."

Grrrr. Not unless you want to revisit Bush v. Gore again. I guess we could fight over equal protection again. :woohoo:
