View Full Version : The Chain Solo?

I have an mp3 of what appears to be a live solo performance of The Chain by Stevie. But, I've never known it to be a part of any of her solo tours, so I suppose it could be a Fleetwood Mac performance. I definitely hear "the girls" on background vocals, and there's a male vocal on the ending "running in the shadows" part, but it's definitely not Lindsey, Rick Vito, or Billy Burnette. He sounds like an R&B singer, whoever he is. Has anyone heard of this?

I believe she did The Chain ONCE ever, and it was at the House of Blues on the Street Angel Tour.

Ah-ha. That must be what this is, then. Thanks. :)

I hate to admit it, but I think this is one of my favorite versions of "The Chain" ever- much better than Lindsey's solo version of it. Yes, it's basically a cover band featuring Stevie Nicks, but it pretty much packs a good punch. And Stevie's vocal is so dead on... in fact, I think her vocals on the Street Angel tour were among her best ever. It's so ironic that she was falling apart physically and emotionally yet sounded so powerful.

Actually, she had kicked coke and Klonopin by the time she went on tour -- it was at the very beginning of her recovery (though the Street Angel album was recorded mostly while she was still on Klonopin). Anyway, the fact that she was practically drug-free after so many years is probably why she sounded so revitalized on this tour. :)

ITA - she was vocally GREAT on that tour and energetic as well. Sadly, she was a self-admitted physical and emotional mess because of the weight gain ands the failure of the record. But, that certainly did not keep her from rocking the roof off the joint I saw her in   In many ways, that was the last of the frenetic Stevie performances!!!!
Also, I believe the male singing with her is Rick Vito - he was on the tour with her.

Not to mention, I still think Stevie tried a little harder in '94 to make up for her lack of self confidence in her physical appearance. I think she thought she had to prove that she could still be the queen of rock and roll no matter what she looked like. Of course, I'm saying that is just PART of the reason she was so good on the SA tour.

I consider the Street Angel and Enchanted tours to be Stevie's best Ever. Stevie's Woodstock Show in 98 is too good for words and its really sad that that was just 6 years ago, and Stevie's vocals have clearly declined alot since 98.

I don't know if I would say that STevie's vocals have declined since 98, changed maybe but I am not sure they have declined. I actually do not really hear that much change from 98 to now in her live performances. On SYW the album, I would agree, her voice sounds different in certain songs, much lower and more nasally, especially the very beginning of DR. However, live, she still sounds basically the same to me. I saw her several times on the Dance, three times during Enchanted, a few for TISL and too many for SYW and she sounded great to me on all the tours. Only notable exception was TISL but in all fairness, she was sick. I guess after the huge changes in her voice from the mid 70's into the 80's, then to the late 80's into the early nineties, it doesn't seem too drastic to me in the last seven years. She can still hit the high notes, it seems like she chooses not to, more often than not. I am probably in the minority here but I thought Sara sounded better on this tour than EVER before. I do agree with you about her voice declining or changing on several parts of the album though. The first lyrics in DR and NMB make me cringe. Also, RTTG is another one that I am not too fond of. But, then she belts out that fabulous rendition of SAY and GB.....'shrugs'...

She's changed a lot vocally in the past few years, ever since 2000. She has lost a lot of power and strength in her voice, it's now rather weak. If you were to listen to bootlegs from '94 up until AHI 2000, you can hear how powerful it is, she's really singing from deep down and blasting the sounds out of her mouth. But then pop in Fall From Grace from the Blockbuster Awards and there is a rather startling difference; it had gotten very weak. She was torturous on the TISL tour, but she's greatly improved for the SYW tour. Although none of her recent vocal performances hold a candle next to her late-nineties ones. The strength is gone, kaput, and it will never come back at this late stage in the game.

I agree with Kelly - I don't think it's "declined", it's just different. I do remember the first time I heard Everyday on the radio - I was shocked at how nasal it sounded. (I still don't like that tune in general.) But I don't really she sounds that "nasally" on the rest of the TISL songs
And I think she's hitting way more high notes live this time around that The Dance or Enchanted tours. No falsetto or anything, but her range is a bit more broad, IMO.

I've known her first with the actual voice, then gone backwards, and personally the intensity she has now blows me away . There are so many some strong or crystal voices that I can admire technically but don't communicate me anything, while Stevie's recent voice strikes me hard everytime. There's all her life written in it, and amplifies so powerfully the emotions of her songs.
By the way, I love the HOB version of The Chain too. Not my favourite, but it's great!

Well I should've emphasised that I think ver voice on the SYW tour was EXCELLENT. While I agree with Dissention that the Enchanted tour still blows the SYW tour away, but they are MUCH MUCH better then the TISL, how people can say that was the best Stevie tour ever is unbelievable. I think Stevie's really been opn an upswing lately. And if I'd never heard that Woodstock 98 boot I'd still be saying the recent tour is the best Stevie's been since the SA tour, but that 98 performance was just SOOOO amazing.

Well, actually, it IS RICK VITO on lead guitar & background vocals on her Street Angel tour.

I like it, too, but there can be no question that the quality of her voice had decreased rather dramatically. It was rather weak and ragged during that performance.

Ages ago, David sent me a cassette tape of the original live broadcast of the performance (before it was over-dubbed for the syndicated version, to disguise the vocal problems Stevie was having that night from her asthma/bronchial trouble*), and I remember the announcer saying that Waddy Wachtel had joined the band for the last song.
After I heard this, I assumed it must be his voice you can hear on the "runnin' through the shadows" parts, since I never thought it sounded like Rick.
I could be wrong though.
(*It's been a lonnnng time since I listened to the original broadcast recording, but I remember at the time noting that one or two songs sounded exactly the same as those on the overdubbed/syndicated version. I believe one of those songs was "Destiny." They must have only overdubbed the songs/moments where her voice was really effected.)

It's weird, because I taped the performance when it first aired on TV, and the mixing sounds better on my tape than on the mp3 version that's floating around out there.
Stevie's vocal does sound a little shakey (I attributed it to nerves, and lack of warm-up... I didn't think it sounded like a "dramatic decrease"), no doubt about it, but it sounds weaker on the mp3 mix than on my videocassette.
She sounds more overpowered by the instruments, and by Sheryl, on the mp3.
It was a cool perfomance though, and when you have the visuals to go along with it, Stevie was really putting her heart into it. It was a great way to kick off the 'TISL' promotion. :D

The MP3 is all I've ever heard, and I love it. Technically, it might not be brilliant, but you can tell she really *cares*, and puts her heart into it, and that's been a rare thing for Stevie in the last few years.

She looked so nervous and i agree it wasnt her best, but you could tell she was trying. She really does get nervous at these events. Look at GDW from cnetral park if you have the video, right during the first couple verses shes touching all over the microphone stand for those ribbons but they arent there, and her hand fidgits lol. not fidgits but shakes.
