View Full Version : What was your first concert?

One of the answers in the favorite band thread gave me this idea. Whose concert was the first one you attended?

For me it was America.

I wanted to see the Beatles when they first came to the US but was in college in Charlottesville, VA at the time and couldn't make it...I did eventually see Paul solo, though..that was a show to remember..

Okay, this is embarrassing! Air Supply!! hehe...I think I was in junior high, and my cousin had tickets and invited me. It was at the Mann Music Center in Philly...

I think my taste in music has improved since then!

My very first concert was The Osmonds when I was, I think, 11.

My first rock concert was Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles. Hotel California tour. Fogelberg was great, Ronstadt was BORING, The Eagles were fabulous. Jackson Browne made an appearance during The Eagles encore. Ahhhhh, what a great time!

December 1971, The Fabulous Forum, Inglewood (LA) California:

Creedence Clearwater Revival (Tom Fogerty, John's brother, had quit the band and they were touring as a three-piece)
Tower Of Power (when they were a Chicago clone, not the funk band we know today)
Tony Joe White (of "Polk Salad Annie" fame)

my first concert was Styx in high school which is completely embarassing now...

then my next was Stevie - The Wild Heart Tour

and then my third was Billy Idol

and then was Stevie again on her second leg of the Wild Heart Tour

now we only do FM and Stevie tours since my hubby saw Paul McCartney at an MTV Unplugged concert. after that, He said his concert days were over since he had seen one of the fab four perform up close and personal... so he'll wait for the Beatles reunion concerts in the afterlife

Well lets see....ya know - I LOVE Dolly Parton - and was never sure where this love came from....but :

My mom was super pregnant with me...like late 8months in....and she went to a Dolly Parton concert...had floor seats. I was a twin so she was pretty damn huge....well Dolly at one point actually looked at my mom and said something to the effect of, "wow honey - you came all the way down those stairs in your condition to see me??" haha...so that is what I count as my technical first concert

Now - that's just because my actual first concert....haha...was New Kids on the Block

I thought it was '92, but I couldn't really remember. I know the May 31 part was right, because that's my ex's birthday and he really didn't want to go to this concert for his birthday. I begged and pleaded and he finally agreed.

Lollapalooza in...'92? 93?94?95? With P-funk, Smashing Pumpkins, and Beastie Boys (among others...) At shoreline. It was funny cause smashing pumpkins were last, and were supposed to be the "headliner" But Beasties went before them, and of course there was massive Beastie love, and then when Smashing Pumpkins came out and got less love, they were all pouty and sullen... "Pumpks your just jealous it's the BEAS TIE BOYS!!!!"

McCartney played only a few US shows, But mainly small theatre's such as his return to the Ed Sullivan theater. In 1993 he played shows in large sports stadiums such as Giants Stadium in NY & Arrowhead in KC. The Arrowhead show was professionally recorded because several tracks from that show appear on the "Paul Is Live" release: "Drive My Car", "Looking For Changes", "C'Mon People" & of course "Kansas City".

Btw, I have been reading that he may be gearing up for a new US tour either this winter or spring...Can't wait!

the setlist he played on the 2004 European shows, Can we say "HOLY S**T!"??? He has added even more Beatles tunes that havent been played since the Beatles recorded 'em for the albums "all those years ago'...

Sir Paul's first ever Oklahoma show (Wings never player here before nor did the Beatles) was the first show I attended at the Ford Center...And I sat in awe of the whole experience, The arena, The show, The songs and the audience reaction was a memory I will forever cherish.

tell me about it...I had to explain to fellow students how the shows I attended went, how the bands sounded, etc. just cause I wore my new concert T-shirt the following day.

Only time that did not happen was after seeing Iron Maiden in Tulsa, OK in Jan.1987 because after sitting front row (Against the barricades) near a 160,000 watt (!!!) indoor sound system I could not hear a single syllable said to me that next morning.

Still one of the best metal shows I have ever seen.

My first concert was Sting's The Soul Cages tour. I was in elementary school. It was funny because he performed "Murder by Numbers" and yelled "F*** you Jimmy Swaggart!!!" before he sang it since Swaggart had mistakenly interpreted it as a song encouraging people to commit murder. My Mom wasn't happy that I got to hear that, but I didn't even know what was going on. I was upset because some woman spilled her beer on me. And when I went to school the next day, the concert t-shirt didn't do much for me, since my classmates had no earthly idea who Sting was; they were all crazy about New Kids on the Block.

Stevie Nicks - The Wild Heart Tour - September 1983.

A month earlier, we had been hit by Hurricane Alicia. I knew nothing of the tour until about a week before the show because we had no electricity, and the batteries had long since died in my radio jam box.

We had to settle for nosebleed tickets, and it was the first time I ever got high. We didn't actually smoke any - I was 14, and attended with my Mom and best friend - but the "warm smell of colitas" really does rise through the air. And since basically everyone below us was toking out, we just went along for the ride. It took us 2 hours to find our car after the show, because we couldn't stop giggling.

And the strangest thing happened at this show. Joe Walsh opened, and then he and the members of the band played tricks on Stevie during her set. At one point (I think it was during "If Anyone Falls"), someone walked across the stage directly behind Stevie's mike with what looked and sounded like a chainsaw. We knew it wasn't a fan, because the guy came out from behind Benmont/Roy Bittan's riser at the back of the stage...

Well, it was touch and go there for a bit. My friend just came and was all "wanna go to the mac?" and I was kicking myself cause i couldn't afford their tickets. Anyway, he said he had snuck into lots of concerts, Like Rolling Stones, blah, blah. so he never told me a plan (I hate doing stuff like that without a plan, and i'd never snuck into a concert before)
Long story short, he was flipping out - so i took charge. We sauntered into the outdoor smoking area, which was only sectioned off by these movable steel gate things. so i'm smoking, then chatting with some people who were already outside, then they asked me to take their picture. I was generally establishing the vibe that I belonged there, my friend was acting li,ke someone who needed their crack (pacing, looking around  ) Anyway, they went in, and about 30 seconds later, i felt this..."moment", this...clear window in time (i'm not being cheesy, i really had a feeling) so I walked in, smiled at security, he smiled back, and my friend was lame and started rushing, so I asked security "can you tell me where the nearest bathroom is?" and he told me, and i laughed, and he NEVER CHECKED OUR TICKETS...so, i saved the day, i think! I hope no one important reads this, i don't want them to think their security is threatened or anything at the shows - although, anyone who wanted to do anything to them could probably just buy a cheap ticket anyway, even weirdos probably aren't that poor..
so, it was all the smoking lounge, and the lax security guy, and my feeling!

You guys/dolls are making me feel REALLY old....

How about Aerosmith at a VERY small venue when I was like 17. I am from New Hampshire, and so are some of the band members , so they played to a crowd of about 300 (maybe) and the only hit they had was local stations playing Dream on....so many years ago...but I can still smell, taste and hear:
that first contact high, the tequila and "Dream on, dream on, dream on, DREAM...until your dreams come true!!!

That was the first of many, many shows I have been lucky enough to see-mainly because tickets used to cost $15-25. (American) and that was to see bands like the Who, the Stones...oh, those were the days...

Everything is so much $$$ now,

That was my first concert too. I remember walking into Reunion Arena and just being in awe of the people, all the gals singing along with the Cover Girls' "We Can't Go Wrong". I remember the smokiness in the arena, and feeling a bit overwhelmed. LOL My mom was taking pics and I kept grabbing her arm going "OMG, mom, it's Joe!!!!" I ruined lots of pictures that way. We had to keep getting up in our chairs to see and security kept telling us to get down. It was irritating. We had bought upper balcony seats, but since the show was moved (forget why), we went to the ticket booth before the show and got 14th row back (good seats because it was the last row in the first section.) The girls next to me taught me something I never forgot, putting your fingers in your ears helps you to hear the people singing, and blocks out alot of the screams and loudness. I did that at the FM shows too. Heh.

Sigh....memories. It was February 1989 and I was almost 13. That was friggin 15 years ago people. LOL

My first concert was Matchbox 20 in October of 1997, right as they started to get big. I was 15 and my best friend asked me at school if I wanted to go 'cause her older sister had extra tickets. I recall seeing Rob Thomas playing guitar at the end of the show and sticking a lit cigarette on the neck. That just really turned me off, since I loathe smoking. Despite that, I enjoyed the whole "concert atmosphere" and getting to hang out with cool people. I did learn a lesson though, always do your homework before the show! I wasn't familiar with any of their work, except for "Push."

Other bands I've seen and number of times:
Fleetwood Mac (7, 2003-04)
Heart (2, 2002, 2004)
John Fogerty (1, 2004)
Sheryl Crow (2, 1999, 2003)
Def Leppard (1, 2003)
John Mellencamp (2, 1999, 2002)
Green Day (1, 2001)
Tom Petty (1, 1999)
Matchbox 20 (1, 1997)

I had very little say in this, but I saw Tim McGraw and some other band in Rayville back in '97. My mom took me with one of my friends for my birthday. We had made signs before the show on bright pink posterboard and held them up during the concert... and I think we made the paper the next day, but I never saw it. :(

My first *real* concert was the Mac in Dallas, 7/3/03... followed by Houston 10/6/03 and then Houston again 6/17/04... I really wanted to go to Bossier City in 8/03 because it's only two hours away from me, but it was a school night. I wish I'd gone.

The bastard got me a ticket to see... Andy Gibb!!! It was ridiculous. I'll never forget being at the concert with my mother,(I was 9 years old), and marveling in disbelief how all the other little teeny-boppers were like SCREAMING at the top of their lungs for like the WHOLE show! It was SO teen-idol out of control. I however, just sat there sedately, politely clapping after each song. It was hell. Andy Gibb was NOT my cup of tea. Neither were the BeeGees. I can as an adult and as a musician of sorts appreciate their songwriting and I must admit "How Deep Is Your Love" IS a beautiful song although the saccharin production still does get to me/get in the way a bit for me.
My concert "life" did not begin for me until a few years later, when I saw the Mac on The Mirage tour!!! Now THAT, was something!!!

Guns 'N' Roses, Milton Keynes, UK. 30th May 1993.

Awesome show as I remember it. Slash's family turned up for the gig and his playing was on fire that night, plus the band was at it's largest in members at that time.

Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, Dizzy Reed, Gilby Clarke (vocals only due to a broken hand), Izzy Stradlin (standing in for Gilby). Plus they had Mike Monroe onstage for Knockin' On Heavens Door and Ronnie Wood for Honky Tonk Women and Paradise City. The show lasted well over 3 hours.

That was the first time I saw Slash play live. Next time will be in January 2005 when VR hit the UK. :blob2: :)

G&R, cool! I'll never forget "back in the day" I saw them live in a faily small venue, right before
they broke big (around 1987)... One of the best shows I 've seen EVER! The energy was truly, tangibly electric.

Were they still using the horm section?

Were they still using the horm section?

No, they had ditched the horns and stuff by that point. I think it got to the point where everything had gone way over the top so they pulled it back to just the basic band. Sounded less bloated in my opinion.

I think they called it the "Skin 'N' Bones" tour as I recall.

Honestly, my first show was from the Tango tour. I was like 5 at the time and don't remember much about it....if anything. It was years and years until I saw my next live show....NSYNC in Pittsburgh. I loved it! hehe After that, I saw Stevie on TISL and lots of shows for SYW. My last show was Madonna in DC...it was kick ass!

That sums up my concert experiences.

Yikes?!?!?! I still love them! I think Christy does, too. Their CDs stay in my car. Step By Step and Tonight are my favorites.

How was the show? Do you remember?

I still like NKOTB and Joe was and always will be "my first love". LOL!!

Funny Feeling from Step by Step is one of my fave songs, I broke out SBS a couple of months ago and just played that one over and over. I adore that song.

My faves:

Didn't I Blow Your Mind
Be My Girl
New Kids on the Block (my best friend at the time and I signed up for a lip sync contest at the mall and were going to do this rap, but I chickened out. LMAO!!)
Are You Down?
The Right Stuff
Please Don't Go Girl
This One's for the Children
Last Night I Saw Santa Claus
I'll Be Missing You Come Christmas
My Favorite Girl (remix from Games)
Step By Step
Funny Feeling
If You Go Away (need to go break out Face the Music and listen...can't remember the rest of the tracks! LOL)

What the FRICK happened to Jordan's falsetto?!!!!! I am listening to his remix NKOTB album....painful. :(
