So what movies have y'all seen for the first time recently?

Either rented or at the theater...whatever.

I saw Garden State and Napoleon Dynamite....I enjoyed both a lot...I didn't really go to the movies a whole lot this summer - so I'm trying to start going more again...oooh - I also saw the Village which I thought was awesome!!!

so what have you seen...

Just saw Ladder 49 (mediocre movie, but my Lord is Joaquin Phoenix hot as hell............) with Bourne Supremacy (awesome suspense flick - not usually my taste, but I really enjoyed it) at the drive-in this past weekend.

Other than that, nothing lately.

My mom made me go see Shark Tale with her this weekend. I hated it but pretended to like it!

Other than that, I haven't seen much lately. I still have to see Sky Captain- can't believe I've let a Jude Law film go for several weeks in the theaters without seeing it.

Deanna, if you liked Garden State- I recommend the soundtrack. We're moving a ton of copies of it right now, for a reason- it's great.

Yeah - Shark Tale doesn't look like my kind of flick...so I won't be seeing that...unless someone pays me a lot of money to see it....

Yeah - I was interested in the soundtrack from Garden State and Napoleon - both sound pretty good...thanks for the recomendation...

I've also wanted to see DeLovely since it came out - and still haven't gotten around to it - should be at the cheap theater soon...I'll see it then...I have a weird thing for Kevin Kline :)

Oh, I interviewed Kevin Kline the other day. He was lovely. Very charming indeed. Seems to take his craft very seriously.
I wasn't a big fan of De-Lovely though. He's great and the music is fab but overall it doesn't quite work and it's way too long.

The last films I saw? I Heart Huckabees, which is weird but hugely enjoyable and Alien Vs Predator, which was silly but fun.

I didn't much like Sky Captain I'm afraid. It was style over substance for me.

OMG....I'm shooting jealous vibes your way ;) no - seriously...the guy I had a huge crush on at NPR all summer sort of reminded me of Kevin Kline...haha...so my weird KK crush sort of escalated after that...

Interviewed him? What do you do?

That's where he's cole porter, right? I also have a weird thing for Kevin Kline, which i believe is called "He's a great actor" :D And plus, as it relates to me, he also happens to be a scorpio! Thanks for reminding me, I want to see that, too...let's see, i'll probably watch mean girls and Napolean Dynamite soon.

I just rented Kill Bill 2, (loved more than the first one), .

OMG - I almost forgot - me too! Actually, we saw Kill Bill Vol. 1 on cable the other night & we loved it so we went out the next night & rented Vol. 2.

I'm actually glad I didn't go to see #1 in the theatre, cuz I'd have been pissed having to wait so long for part 2.

PS - all fight scenes awesome, but Daryl & Uma - OMG!

He is a great actor...but even beyond that...he makes me all fluttery haha...I just really enjoy him..Life as a House was great....I don't know much about astrology so the scorpio thing doesn't mean anything to me...

Mean Girls is hilarious!!! I loved it - definitely see that - and Napoleon Dynamite was pretty damn amusing as well....

I haven't seen a grown-up movie (almos said adult movie, but that didn't sound right  ) at the theater since Titanic  . But I think I've seen almost every animated flick out there!! Which of course means Shark Tale is in my immediate future. I am looking forward to The Incredibles coming out next month.

I did rent Cold Mountain a couple weeks ago and LOVED it. And I can't stand Nicole Kidman (usually). I rented Love Actually last weekend and didn't even watch the whole thing.

Some very good ones (with an exception):
Vera Drake - Mike Leigh at his best with a controversial subject (abortion), and Imelda Staunton is amazing.

Land Of Plenty - You can love it or hate it, I liked it a lot :D . Great performance by John Diehl (Michelle Williams is quite good too), and some parts remind Wenders' earlier and better work.

Collateral- I'm usually allergic to Tom Cruise acting but he's bearable in it, even if Jamie Foxx steals the show, and I loved the Jazz version of Goldberg variations in the soundtrack...

Bin Jip- a Korean romantic and funny love story where the leading actors don't speak at all. Really beautiful.

Palindromes by Todd Solondz - very politically incorrect, a brilliant screenplay, only 30 seconds of Jennifer Jason Leigh. All qualities! ;)

The Manchurian Candidate - the original is one of my favorites, this one made me really angry. What happened to Jonathan Demme? This is the second classic he destroys. By the way, Liev Schreiber is remarkable.

Mar Adentro- I think Bardem is gonna win the Oscar as leading actor and it would be fully deserved. Amenabar got a little melliflous in a couple of points, but the movie remains very poetic abd truthful, with some moments in which it takes your breath away  . Genious at work, here!

Let's see. I'll keep it short.

Boondock Saints (rented it) was really good.

I rented Frida with Salma Hayek. It was ok...it followed the story loosely and jumped around too much. I felt confused by the end of the film.

Sky Captain was horrible. It was filmed beautifully and the CGI was amazing. The acting however was doo-doo, as was the dialogue. And when you finally get to the ending...!?!?! What a let down.

Napoleon Dynamite was pretty good. An odd movie to say the least, but worth seeing and you'll chuckle more than a few times.

What?? That movie was brilliant!!! It didn't jump around at all except at the beginning....then it just flashed back and started from early in the life of Frida.

I think this movie was great - Salma did a great job - and it really helped me understand Frida Kahlo more - in turn helping me to appreciate her paintings, which previously I was not a huge fan of...

I don't know, I thought it was a really well done and great movie...

because I cannot sit through a movie that is over 1.5 hours without falling asleep/slashing my wrists over boredom...

Last movie I saw was the third Harry Potter movie cause Deb wanted to see it, So we went to the 11:15PM showing the night it opened (Wasnt bad for the length it took to play...So I didnt fall asleep/slash my wrists, Though sitting through the 15 minutes of previews was like having oral surgery!)

Well, it's about few things: the desire of motherhood, the way children are grown in our society, the not so hidden hypocrisy and violence in the beliefs of some family values' paladins... and there's also a Christian Boy/girl Band ;) . Young Todd can be harsh but very funny too. Great movie!

You're a journalist though right? You may well get to meet him yourself then one day.
He was really easy to talk to, very smart and has a great smile. Nothing bad to report, I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear. :D
ok, if you get to interview KK, than it just may well be impressive. I'm impressed! Though i'm not sure what a DVD rag is, do you guys just write and review about DVD's that are coming out?

Sky Captain - LOVED IT - I know I know - hokey dialogue - but that was what all of those movies from "that" era were like

The Forgotten - blah - but Moore was as usual FANTASTIC and there is that FIRST scene that scares the hell out just about every one.

Vanity Fair - okay - not great - but okay. Could have been great though if the editor or whomever cut it had done IMO a better job.

That was my second choice. I'll definitely be catching that one soon.

The local drive-in is less than a mile from my house, so I should be there all the time, but we go once or twice a summer. I just read something that NY, PA & OH are the states with the most drive-ins & that there aren't many around anymore in the rest of the country. I think that's sad, they're a lot of fun.

Not to mention the fact that you bring your own food & beverage of choice  AND you see 2 movies for $6.50 per person!

I was very disappointed with that one. Moore is another one of my all-time favorites (have you seen "Safe"? It was just so anticlimactic and out-there that it didn't make sense. They just threw it out there to explain things and it did just the opposite. Why they chose to edit it down to 90 minutes, I'll never know. Trying to cram such a complex story into such a short running time is like trying to get toothpaste back into the tube.

Her range amazes me. I mean to go ar from romping aroung nakes as a coked up porn star in "Boogie Nights", to a cheating housewife in the period flick "End of the Affair," to Agent Starling in "Hannible," to many other roles and be VERY GOOD in all of them, just amazes me.

And don't forget one of her highest achievements, "Far From Heaven." I mean, not only did she have to play the character well, but she had to learn a completely different style of acting. Although I LOVE Nicole Kidman, how she won the Oscar over Julianne Moore that year mystified me (Kidman should have won it for The Others and she should win one for Dogville). And how Moore hasn't gotten one yet is even more shocking; I think she's better than Meryl. Did you ever see Altman's "Short Cuts"? She was GREAT in that one, too. But rent "Safe" if oyu haven't seen it, you'll LOVE it!

My problem with Meryl is that her performances have gotten increasingly self-conscious over the years, especially in the last few years. She's too nuanced for her own good. Although, I must say, I totally love her in She-Devil.

Oh yes, you must. The acting is superb. I kept thinking during the movie "seriously, this IS the same woman that was in Boogie Nights......." Unbelievable how good she is.

PS - I LOVE Boogie Nights! :D

My problem with Meryl is that her performances have gotten increasingly self-conscious over the years, especially in the last few years. She's too nuanced for her own good. Although, I must say, I totally love her in She-Devil.

I know. But, such is the curse of the aging Hollywood Legend - think Bullets over Broadway - who I am but "some aging Broadway LEGEND!!!"

Seriously, she has a stellar catalogue of movies from "The Deer Hunter" to "Out of Africa" (sheebus - her best IMO) to She Devil (hysterical) to "Postcards from the Edge" (great but clearly eclipsed as in real life by McLaine "It TWIIIIIRRRRLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEED" ) to about 100 others. So, I still love her and forgive the indiscretions of late  - one of which certainly was NOT her three roles in Angels, which was a true measure of her talent!!!!!

Oh, I do think she is a stellar actress. She's just too refined nowadays and lost some of her magic a bit. Still one of the best in history. And she simply can't top Sophie's Choice.

She's really wonderful. I remember the first time I saw her, in Vanya on the 42th Street. I didn't know who she was, but from the first scene she just was mesmerizing. Moore deserved the Oscar for Safe, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, The Hours (definitely the best among the three), A Map Of the World, The End Of The Affair, Far from Heaven ... maybe Academy should already give her an achievement award. ;)

Even if I can't compare her to Meryl Streep, not yet.

I watched Angels In America last week. I was okay with it. The Belle et la Bete reference made me chuckle. I was most interested in Harper's storyline. I didn't care much for anyone else, although Prior did bring the funny. And sheebus, Emma-as-angel, overact much?

And in English, we had to watch Dead Poets Society and connect it to Kate Chopin's The Awakening. Lame. I didn't care for it much.

Indeed. And Boogie nights is one of my favorite movies. Amber Waves, baby!!! And rollergirl? (says Amber who is always on her blades :D ) I just thought it captured the time so well (she says as if she wasn't 5 years old in '79  ) but seriously, when they were all coked up, in like, 83 and trying to put out an album? When it showed them practicing guitar and lyrics? perfect. And when they went to the rich coke guy's house in LA and he was singing to Jesse's girl? perfect. and when...etc. :D oh, and i love the performance of...he's super good, i can't remember his name right this moment. The gay guy who had a crush on Marky Mark, and was chubby but wore tight shirts, and was all syncophantic..that guy is sooo good. Seriously, I love that movie...

A Map Of the World

Julianne AND Sigourney both deserved Oscars for that movie. They made me forget that they were actresses in that one. And - it was one case where the movie was better than the book, and that's always a plus. I like Jane Hamilton and the book was good, but she tends to get too verbose and intricate for her own good. I thought her style of writing KILLED The Book of Ruth.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman played Scotty the chubby gay guy. Great performance! I also loved the drug dealers house - we STILL play Sister Christian very loudly & sing along.

When we went camping last year, we even threw fire crackers like that small Asian boy did in the movie (yes, alcohol may have been involved...)

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is fantastic in every thing I've seen him in! He's a great actor!

Was the drug dealer played by a thinner Alfredo Molina? In Coffee and Cigarettes there was a reference about his role in Boogie Nights and I was racking my brain trying to remember if that was him?

Not to mention the snotty ex-patriate in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and his fab. run as a drag queen in "Flawless."

He was also great in "Red Dragon" and "State and Maine."

He is becoming known for his range, which apparently is wide!!!!

oh-my-god! could it have been? I think that guy looked a little different, but I can't think of anyone else in the movie that could've been Alfred Molina...

I haven't read the book, but I really liked the movie. Sigourney Weaver gave one of her best performances and Scott Elliott's direction impressed me. His experience in theatre payed off in the work with the actors. I much prefer his debut film than Sam Mendes' American Beauty.

Weaver is one of the best, she can completely immerse herself in a role. My favorite from her was Death and the Maiden, she was brilliant in that.

American Beauty is highly overrated and if it wasn't for Annette Benning, who was marvelous, it would have been even worse. The script is simply laughable and I never fail to crack up at the plastic bag scene. And Kevin Spacey is very cloying in almost everything he does, he seems to be going through the motions in every movie; I can't believe he's won two Oscars. Anyone who agreed to star in Pay It Forward needs to have their Oscars taken back, IMO. And have you seen that movie The United States of Leland that he just made? If you're a masochist, rent it immediately!!!

Yep, but I thought Mena Suvari was really good, and the guy who played the daughters weird neighbor guy, and the guy who played the neighbor. Really, the whole cast was good except Spacey, who was Ok...He had some funnily written parts, which were a godsend...

Yes, she's great in it and Ben Kingsley was the best partner she could have. The actor who played his husband (can't remember his name) was so lame that damaged the movie, IMO.

Yes, Kevin Spacey can be one of the most overindulgent and annoying actors around, even if I liked him in some movies, like Glengarry Glenn Ross, The Usual Suspects and L.A Confidential. I think I'll miss The United States Of Leland but I'm curious to see him playing Bobby Darin in Beyond The Sea (I' m a big Bobby Darin fan :) ), The major risk factor is that he's also the director of the film...

His mannerisms are totally annoying and he uses them in every movie, it all gets rote. The first movie I saw with him was Working Girl and those are the kinds of parts I'd like to see him in more: two-minute roles. Her drove me nuts in Usual Suspects. :sorry: But I did love Glengarry Glenn Ross, everyone was fantastic in that.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I totally "movied out" this weekend. I can't stop talking like Napolean Dynamite - "Whatever I WANT to do, GOSSSHHHH!"

LOVED De-Lovely!

I also rented "Mayor of the Sunset Strip," it's a documentary on Rodney Bingenheimer, the famous (or infamous) KROQ DJ. Great cameos with Cher, Bowie, Kim Fowley (who seems like a scum bag, but is very funny and intelligent), Courtney Love, Gwen Stefani, Alice Cooper...the extra DVD footage took as long to watch as the movie, but well worth it!
