View Full Version : What are you afraid of?

I started to head out the front door tonight, when I noticed a huge spider hanging on the porch. I couldn't even step outside until my boyfriend killed it. I was SO freaked out.

I'd never really been afraid of them before, but lately the sight of even the smallest spider makes my skin crawl. I think it has something to do with what I found a few weeks ago on the curtain behind my bed - about a foot above my pillow:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/heyjupiter678/spider2_sm.jpg

It's leg-span was well over two inches - probably closer to three. Ugh, it's still creeping me out . . .

So, do any of you have phobias?

That thing would give anybody the shivers, especially right above the bed.

Years ago when I was pregnant with my son, we lived on a farm. I use to put together jig saw puzzles. I had my puzzle pieces on a card table, with the legs folded up underneath it. I bent down and picked it up, as I was walking with it, I knew something felt different. I set it down on the footstool and I had my fingernails in a huge black snake. I'm surprised I didn't go into labor right there. That will make you do a dance!!

But my phobia is water. I am petrified of it. I wish I could overcome the fear but I can't. My husband and I love to fish and I like being on the water but not in it. I am 35 years old and my husband made me take swim lessons. Imagine a 35 year old woman with 5 & 6 year old kids and I'm the one blubbering I can't do it. She actually wanted me to put my face in the water....lol.

Thats a few of my stories.

I hate all insects (except butterflies). Spiders don't creep me out as much as flying, stinging ones do.

I also hate the sight of blood, and I have an odd phobia about veins. I cannot stand to have blood drawn. It just freaks me out.

great, now YOUR spider is creeping me out! Thanks for the GIANT PICTURE :D I was held captive in my house by wasps a couple weeks ago - thats the main bug i'm scared of. I'm afraid of getting older...I'm afraid of being murdered....

Spiders don't bother me. We once had a "pet" spider take up residence on our back porch. Every night he'd weave the most amazingly intricate webs. We'd ooh and ah over the every morning. I also enjoy watching the bats fly around as the sun begins to set. I don't like other kinds of bugs though.

The thing that scares me is heights. I'm okay in a skyscraper but put me up on top of a mountain or something similar--and I'm scared to death.
As high as I ever want to get off the ground is when I'm on horseback.

Oh--and one more thing--the thought of another four years of Shrub in office really scares me to death.

Just for future reference, I would advise that you don't ever move to Australia. This is the common huntsman which can always be found sticking its nose into your household business. I've spent hours chasing one out of my bedroom on occasion. You get used to it a bit, but when they're the size of your extended hand you still tend to yelp. These aren't venomous though.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v127/Lux_Adams/Huntsman.jpg

The female Redbacks are the ones around here which do the damage. I would say it's a myth that they actually bite and do damage but then the family came over from New Zealand and just as we were telling them they were being paranoid, a redback bit a few of them. Lovely way to send the tourists away.

But then you have the most venomous spider in the world. The male Funnel Web is found in Sydney and every year a few more Sydney-siders drop off in the annual cull.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v127/Lux_Adams/FunnelWeb.jpg

We do of course also have something like 9 of the 10 deadliest snakes aswell but you don't see them. Some are alledgedly found where I live but basically they live out west (which is Australian for in the middle of nowhere or central Australia). You do see the spiders though, so yeah the point was, the whole myth about Australians living amongst deadly creatures is just that, a myth........well except for the spiders. Well that last sentence didn't make any sense and what better way to conclude than on incompetency.

I watched an Australian nature show a couple of weeks ago, and that really creeped me out! They have one-third of the entire world's deadliest snakes - they have about 180 species of snake and 130 are super poisonous. Also, they showed the funnel web, and several other deadly spiders. I forgot which one, but they showed one that was deadly dropping into a pool where kids were splashing and playing, and they were like "this spider can stay under water for up to 30 minutes  " Then they showed sharks, then they showed the huge jellyfish problem, they're all poisonous and they get so many that they have to sort of, put netting out to try to keep the shallows a bit clear...then they showed a crocodile attacking a woman's boat...
It totally freaked me out - I used to think, oh, it will be so fun to vacation in Australia, sun, beach, etc. ...Now i realize that if I ever go there i'm gonna wear a fu****g HASMAT suit!

see, i'm not to scared of them either, and here's the thing about spiders...they eat other bugs!!! that's why when there was a huge one outside with a giant web, i didn't do anything...I was like, "hey, spidey, why'nt you try to get some wasps in that web?"

I love spiders! My friend Alex has a tarantula that we used to let crawl all over us when we were ... ummm ... getting high. (Please don't ban me! :xoxo: ) It's like a miniature massage, the way she moves her legs, although the hairs on her belly start to tickle after a while. Her favorite place to be is at the base of your neck, hiding her head in your hair. But you had to watch her, or she'd crawl inside your clothes and seek the warmest, dampest place to play house. Yes, I mean there...

What I don't like -- spiderwebs. ICK!!! Love to look at them and watch them being spun, but immediately have to take a shower when I walk into one. And then for the next day or so, I still feel like I have strands of it stuck to my skin, especially when I get a face full of them.

Also, going into hospitals makes me nauseous. I spent a good part of my childhood being operated on to correct a congenital esophagus defect. I stayed in the hospital about a week every few months for a few years until they decided I was old enough to just slice open from bellybutton to sternum and be done with it. To this day, I want to vomit when I smell or see jello or chicken broth. Thankfully (or not, considering my current waistline), I never developed an aversion to ice cream, as those were the only three things I was able to swallow without choking.

I'm fine with snakes, mice, bats, etc... but spiders do creep me out. I'm a baby when it comes to bugs. And I once found an abnormally large scorpion under my bed when we lived in AZ, so I was afraid of those for awhile. I'm also terrified of public speaking. That's about it.

If my hearing ever goes I will bring to life the lyrics of a classic Pat Travers song:

"Boom, Boom, Out Goes The Lights"

ps-Our house is full of spiders, But mainly "Daddy Longlegs"...Which are cool, But outside we have the occasional "Banana Spider" which build the most beautiful webs of any spiders I have ever seen.

Seriously, i'm too scared of most bugs to get close enough to clap a jar over them...although i've recently realized spraying them to death isn't the most humane method... :( but you know, you can be more farther away if you spray them...but watching bugs die from spray is kinda more than my humanitarian soul can take... you know, my tree-hugging, Humbolt county, Northern California soul is very sensitive... :D

How about being deathly allergic to them? No kidding! We've got fire ants here in the South and I'm allergic to them. I have to get allergy shots and I have to carry around an epi-pen on me at all times because the damned little critters are everywhere. I used to enjoy gardening but now it's too dangerous for me. It's really theraputic digging in the dirt but I can't do that anymore. &^%$% Ants!

And Bats also eat bugs. So more reason not to fear them but to admire them for their public service to mankind!

But you had to watch her, or she'd crawl inside your clothes and seek the warmest, dampest place to play house. Yes, I mean there....See, I used to really like spiders, but then you told us that part, so now I don't know.

I understand that most people don't care for bugs at all, but I happen to absolutely adore the vast majority of insects. I really love cicadas and praying mantises, and I have to play with them when I find them. I'll walk up to someone and I'll have some huge bug on my arm and I'll be all awestruck. And they'll be inching away from me. Typical scenario. But there are a few exceptions to this. I hate, hate, hate walking sticks. First off, I don't know if anyone notices, but they're always having sex. And I'm never getting any, though I imagine they don't particularly enjoy it, anyway. But the thing is, they spray this acidic liquid at you if you bother them; I found out the hard way by getting it in my eyes. After them, I can't take horse flies and wasps. I've never been bitten by a horse fly, but they're just incredibly scary looking to me. Their size just seems unnatural to me for a fly. They're like house flies on steroids. And wasps are just evil. I run away screaming when one comes around.

And I'm afraid of heights. I can't stand on the second floor of like, Barnes and Noble without feeling queasy. And murder, violent death, and death in general freak me out. I used to be really afraid of rape, particularly when I first moved into a dorm room in college, but I overcame that and I'm not even sure how.

And was it Krista who said she has a thing about veins and giving blood and all? I'm seriously afraid of needles. I can't watch needles being used on TV. I've never given blood because I think I would just pass out.

I get lots of spiders around the house, and I hate them. I'm the one who either has to live with it or kill it. My lil' one and I found a spider in between the glass in the door of our microwave the other morning. It freaked me out, because I couldn't get to him to kill him! My other big fears are cancer, tornados, and house fires in the middle of the night.

After spiders, cancer would be my next biggest fear. I've been going for a yearly mammogram since I was 25.

And to whoever mentioned ants (Amber?), they only gross me out when there's an over-abundance of them. Totally makes my skin crawl to see hundreds or thousands of them crawling around...Eww...

Very scared of fire & deep water - burning or drowning NOT the way I want to die, it's the whole idea of not being able to get air & KNOWING you're gonna die.

I'm fine with flying until about a week before I'm scheduled to leave (like right now - I leave for AZ next week, getting a bit antsy) then I start thinking about it too much & getting nervous, so I have to calm myself down. Once I'm on the plane I'm OK.

Bugs are iffy - I don't really mind the spiders in my house, they're not that big. I HATE those millipede things that show up in the spring & early summer around here - they run too damn fast. Those I get someone to kill right away, since as mentioned by someone else - if it gets away, I can't sleep. Oh, and my work is infested with cockroaches - GROSS! I won't go near them, and I hate that they crunch when you kill them (one girl went to step on one - I thought everyone knew if you did that their eggs will be on your shoe & you'll take them home with you. Apparently not.)

Most bugs don't bother me - as long as they're not ON my body. If that happens I will scream & run & shake all of my limbs in a freak-out dance. ICK.

I have a friend with that fear. She has in her glove compartment a window punch and a seat belt cutter. One time her seat belt was getting stuck, where she couldn't get it unlatched, and she had to go across a big bridge. She drove across the bridge with the seat belt cutter in her hand, just in case! She's a bit of a safety freak in other ways, too....

I am deathly afraid of spiders. I see one - I freak out. However, I'm not too afraid of them to abstain from breaking out the flyswater and smashing them to bits. :woohoo:

Flying bugs - my mom and sisters and I all have a phobia. I run away like a girl. My dad just laughs.

Other than bugs, I'm really creeped out by heights. And, I used to be really afraid of dolls. My grandmother used to have a whole room full of these porcelain dolls, and we had to sleep in there - *shudder* I always felt like they were watching me, and then going to come alive when I was asleep.

BIG fear of heights, but I force myself to go on things like roller coasters to try to overcome it. I think this is a result of seeing someone commit suicide by jumping off a high building when I was 14. I had alot of serious flashbacks when the people were jumping out of the WTC on 9/11.

SUPER BIG fear of flying, but I still go. My doctor actually prescribes meds for me - LOL! The idea of what happened to the passengers on TWA 800 is my idea of a terrifying death. Is it really that crazy to be afraid of being 30,000 feet inside a hollow metal tube with your life in the hands of someone that you have never met? I DON'T THINK SO!!! And as for those damn oxygen masks . . . no thanks I would rather pass out before we hit the ground.

Also don't like rodents of any sort. I do not like mice and will scream like a 5 year old if there is one running across the floor. I am already preparing myself for this winter and the old farmhouse that I just moved into . . . the previous owners had mice and rat poison everywhere when I moved in . . ugh. Not a good sign!

I have a fear of flying. It scares the crap out of me. I picture all this crazy stuff in my head. The plane going down as I look at all the other passengers faces knowing not one of us could do anything to stop it. Very scary.

I've been on numerous flights for over 15 years now, but my fear of flying didn't come up until recently. I won't fly without my daughter. I wouldn't want to leave her motherless, so if I fly, she goes to. Almost sounds selfish, but I couldn't stand the thought of her being parentless.

My feeling about the Ocean is interesting - it does scare me - mostly because of the vastness and restlessness of it...I think it's beautiful but just amazing - so it's a respectful sort of fear I guess...

I almost forgot! When I returned home from our trip to the Grand Canyon, I had nightmares that Sara was falling from the rim, and I would just dive in after her. I had nightmares for a week. And, if I sit and think about it long enough, it makes my skin crawl. It's just that big and humbling. So, I can agree with Deanna and her fear of the ocean statement... I have a BIG respectful fear of the Grand Canyon, but it's so beautiful, I can't wait to go back. I read a book about death in the Grand Canyon after I came home from my trip, and that really freaked me out, but it was interesting, and if anything, it teaches you what NOT to do while you're there so you don't get yourself killed...

Ok, don't tell your daughter about this. I think a bunch of my fears are risidual from my mom telling me about them and such. Like, when we used to have our once a month treat eat out, mom would read the paper, and then tell me about some murder, then we had this complex system of signals in case someone tried to kidnap me(the signal part is good, but) and then my fear of Tsunamis i think came from her telling me how she always had dreams that there was a giant ocean wave coming, and only she could see it, and she had to try to save me...etc. So then I've had dreams like that...

Here's an amusing anecdote:

So I was driving home one day and I was at a red light. I just glanced in my rearview mirror and there was a clown - full makeup/wig the whole nine yards - driving the car behing me....it FREAKED ME OUT!!!

I guess there was a birthday party in my neighborhood because it followed me almost all the way to my house - I was shaken but laughing because of how ridiculous the whole thing was - and how ridiculous this clown looked driving..

afraid is being around people (!!!), I tend to be a loner, Was that way through all of my high school/college years (I was approachable & friendly, But rather more reserved and I never initiated a conversation)...

Kinda funny though, But as I have grown older going to concerts is about as sociable as I will ever get, Otherwise I am a grouchy, pissed off M.F. who would rather be left the hell alone!!!

I am mortally afraid of birds. I have been since I was a kid. They freak me out with their beady eyes and scary beaks and devil claws.

I've gone through phases where I've gotten better about it. A few years ago I was starting to do well, and then went to the zoo and just as I was walking out of the Amazon exhibit, I think, a bird swooped for my head and knocked my sunglasses off my head (I had them up, headband style) and I screamed and wanted to bawl.

Something's in the air lately. Yesterday was awful with the birds. The geese at work were out in force- when I came out for lunch, they were gathered around by my car. Ugghhh. Then I went to Meijer and there were a random HUGE pack of seagulls in the parking lot. I parked as far away from them as I could, but when I left the store, they'd gravitated all the way over to my car. I sped into my car, but then when I pulled out they literally started to SWOOP around my car- it was awful. I started to cry. Then, when I got home, my apartment complex's geese were blocking the building's door. UGHGHGHGGHHH.

Brian- I'm also in total fear of losing my hearing. Tinnitus is my biggest nightmare (aside from birds clawing my eyes out, that is).

wow - this sounds like me and bees....and I don't care what people say - they DO bother you even if you don't bother them lol....just the other day I came out of the store and there was a bee just flying around my car's driver side door....it flew away and ran into my car....but seriously...the bee came back and kept flying into the window...it freaked me out!!

My sister has a friend who feels birds should not be allowed to just fly around freely as they do lol....she hates them...

Your bird thing, for some reason, reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where the guy calls Elaine "Big Head" and then later in the park a bird actually flies right into her head.....

I tell ya - when you're afraid of something like that it's like the species harasses you on purpose....they find it amusing... I always joke with my friends that bees spot me and then say to their bee friends, "oh there's Deanna...let's go..." then they mercilessly hover around me....

I'm saying "devil claws" in my Lorelai Gilmore tone, not a real one! I just hate them. They're just so gross.

I don't have that much contact with them, although moving to downtown Chicago with all the f-ing pigeons was scary for me for awhile. But I'm telling you- seeing them everywhere in the last couple of days is trippy and very unusual. They're planning something, I'm telling you.

Being scared of birds isn't a terribly uncommon fear- I've met several people who share it. My best friend is scared/disturbed by maps. THAT'S weird. Birds are pretty normal in comparison.

Rats: that's what makes my skin crawl, not pet ones mind you, but the feral ones, mostly b/c unlike spiders I can't just take a shoe to them and squash them.

Oh and I have a fear of open air roller coasters, esp. upsidedown, I keep thinking I'll fall out of them, even after taking physics and learning about gravity etc.

I know! I knew about it when it first started airing, but didn't start watching until last season. The writing and acting are so good! Boyfriend won't watch it, though - says it's "that fast-talker" show & can't stand it.

I despise roaches. I had to pick one up last night, I got a newspaper, and picked up a box and swooshed it onto the paper and I'm all "You touch my hand and I'll kill you AGAIN."

I'm not really afraid of bugs, but I don't want 'em crawlin' on me. I've seen people on Maury who were deathly afraid of puppies, birds, puppets, stuff that you wouldn't think to be scared of...weird. This guy helped them get over their phobias.

I don't like clowns either and I dressed up as one for Halloween when I was like 11 or 12. LOL

I am afraid of fire, have been since I was a kid. Seeing people on TV who've been burned makes my heart break. :(
