No, I have not heard of that author. However there is a book coming out by Carol Ann Harris. I read this on another board. I am sorry if it has been posted before. The link is from Amazon UK. I did not find it on Amazon.com.

Carol Ann Harris was a studio manager

I thought she was a secretary?

For the next eight years she was Lindsey's consort, muse, lover and guardian.

Muse?

Guardian?

And I've got the "Never Break the Chain" book last week. It's really pretty interesting so far. She interviewed a lot of the studio folks who were there around the making of Rumours. Back when she was with Lindsey, she was just "Carol." These days, she's "Carol Ann"? Isn't Carol Ann the little girl in "Poltergeist"? There is absolutely no connection between the unfortunate little chit & the rock star's crazy ex who spills all on talk shows.

Oh gosh, exactly. Not to say that I'm about to read this one either.Until a decent author-researcher comes along who acquires proper access to primary sources (instead of just poring over old newspaper & magazine clippings), we'll never get a genuinely good book on Fleetwood Mac.

I'd like to send all these writers of past FM books a copy each of Jacques Barzun & Henry Graff's "The Modern Researcher." They could all stand a primer on fundamental scholarship techniques.

Wishful thinking, David. Sadly, I don't think it will ever happen for us unless Stevie decides to write something of her own as she has said she would eventually. We'll be waiting another 20 years for that i'm afraid.

yeah - you should. I personally have the feeling that Stevie's book would also be an excercise in half truths and washovers. No offense to Stevie, of course. But I noticed when i was reading old movie actress biographies in highschool, that the one the star wrote themselves was always more dull, and really didn't have any dirt in it that would make the star look bad, or show them at a weak human moment or whatever... :wavey:

Bette Davis' "mother goddam" by her was ok, considering, but it didn't touch "Bette and Joan" or of course, the book her daughter wrote about her... There were some i read by the star that were really bad - like, as if Martha Stewart got ahold of the manuscript and made it all nice for thanksgiving

I must say Kitty K. is a bit of a hack, but her books are good if they are taken with a little grain of salt

As for celeb. autobiographies, read "Swanson on Swanson" by Gloria Swanson. She is unflinching in her honesty about herself, her ambition, and the price she paid for it.

As for the rest., La Bankhead's was pretty fab.

She's won many prestigious awards and has been honored quite a bit for being such a hack. ;) I've read all of her books but one and found them all to be among the best celeb bios I've read. Even if not everything in them is true, she doesn't present them as facts, she always says something like "according to" or quotes someone. A very fine writer, IMO.

And I agree about Swanson's book, it was great. Bette Midler was going to write an expose about the behind-the-scenes schenanigans regarding her TV show and was given and advance of $5 million for it. Then they pulled the rug out from under her because the publishing company was owned by CBS, the network her show was on, and didn't want the bad publicity.

I wish Jackie Susann had written an autobiography, it would have been salacious. But Valley of the Dolls is pretty much her autobio, so... Ethel Merman never even mentioned her in her book and they lovers, for cripes sake. I also want a Robert Altman autobio eventually.

Peter Fonda's book was good, too!

Big Love video was just an actress.

Carol Ann or whatever her name is was on the It Was I video, all over the Tusk album inserts and Law and Order too. Am I missing something? Oh yeah, and Walter Egans album too and some video that I have never seen...

Cheri ( Lindsey's girl after Carol) was on the Wrong video as one of his bed mates and not the clock as I heard before ( right?) she was in Pretty Woman too.

As for Carol writing a book, I really would love to read it. I really would love to know what Lindsey and Stevie think of it as well...

The Penguin is mentioned in the Bibliography. Here, I'll tell you what it says: "The oneline Fleetwood Mac resource The Penguin (www.fleetwoodmac.net) should really be in a list of its own, since it's such an unending fount of information. Marty and Lisa Adelson's website hosts original Q&A sessions, biographical information, discographies, guitar tabaltures, as well as reams of archival material--and more."

And according to the index, The Penguin is mentioned on pages 37-8, 96, 118, 123, 127, 130, 132, 142, 160, 182, 191, 201, and 212!

Here are the people that are listed in the bibliography that she (the author) personally inteviewed. I recognized the names of some of them, some of them I didn't: Nina Bombardier, Bob Brunning, Bob Edwards, Ben Fong-Torres, Michael Freeman, John Grissim, Gretchen Heffler, Margi Kent, Al Kooper, Cris Morris, Jeff Murphy, Mark Myers, Keith Olsen, and Mickey Shapiro.

Stevie's always maintained that the last thing her autobiography would ever be, is some kind of "scathing tell-all."
She has said that she'd discuss all the highs and lows, but she's not interested in being graphic or hurtful.

My assumption is that her book would be much like her songs... honest, but most definitely romanticized.
Personally, I'd be disappointed by anything else. Something "full of dirt" seems beneath Stevie to me.

I wouldn't call her a "hack," but she's certainly a very well-paid gossip monger.

I'm always conflicted about her books... she usually tackles subjects who could use taken down a peg (the Reagans, the Bushs, etc.), but I generally cringe at her style.
Sometimes it seems like a glorified National Enquirer article. Comments and statements from former (and typically disgruntled) associates and grade-school acquaintances, interspersed with known facts to make the tome seem more reputable.

It's not that you wouldn't know what "really happened," per se... it's just that you'd get, as I said, a romantized version of it all.

I guess I just don't tend to agree that one has to "dish the dirt" in order to be honest.
That particular mindset is... and this is absolutely not directed at you... akin to the 'Jerry Springer Show' mentality, in my opinion.

I've always had more respect for people who, while being completely honest, still maintain a level of decorum and class.

Exactly.

Go into detail or don't even bother because, otherwise, it's a waste of my time to read it, let alone a waste of my money to buy it. I'd love it if she took Grace Slick's example and wrote something like she did. I think that if Stevie whitewashed stuff, the reviews would be devastating because no self-respecting reader would buy into any lily-white, sanitized versions of events. She'd certainly be called out on having long nets of white clouding her memories.

But then a statement such as, "Lindsey and I have had terrible fights... screaming, cursing, physical violence... because of jealousy and egotism on both of our parts," is basically saying the same thing as, "and then he screamed that i was a f******* no talent wh***, and I slapped him and told him to go f*** himself, he is just jealous cause people like my songs better"... but in a less sensationalistic way.

I know what you mean, Johnny, but who would want to read that? Seriously, if she were to describe events like that, it would be so vague and dull that people would lose interest after awhile, you know? You simply can't write autobiographies like that or else the pace suffers, therefore the reader suffers and they don't even bother to finish it.

Know what I mean?
Yeah, I guess i really have the desire to know what people actually said and did - then i know what it was really about.

"Romanticized" sounds like a romanticized way to say "whitewash."

I distinctly remember her saying that she's going to release a book that tells the truth and doesn't gloss anything over, but that she'll wait until everyone is dead before doing so.

She has said that she would want to wait until everyone is either dead or too old to care, yes... but she has also said, that she has no intention of being pointlessly graphic or saying anything that would be damaging to someone.

Like I said, there's a difference between "honesty" and "dishing dirt."
I don't understand why avoiding the base-instinct of being harsh, gossipy and appealing to the lowest common denominator, would be considered "white-washing."

Quite frankly, I don't care to know which of her lovers was best in the bedroom, or which had the most ample endowment, or which did the most drugs, or which was found passed out on the floor of his bathroom, covered in vomit, from having overdosed.
I also don't need to know if Kenny Loggins had B.O., or if Maria Vidal never brushed her teeth, or if Jimmy Iovine in fact drew on that unibrow.

I expect that stuff from Angela Bowie and, quite likely, Carol Harris... not Stevie Nicks. :shrugs:

I know what you mean, Johnny, but who would want to read that? Seriously, if she were to describe events like that, it would be so vague and dull that people would lose interest after awhile, you know? You simply can't write autobiographies like that or else the pace suffers, therefore the reader suffers and they don't even bother to finish it.

I guess there's reason #2 why no one would ever read an autobiography written by me!

oh...well, i do want to know some of those things :D But maybe not exactly like that, just the stuff that is more germaine to the plot, i guess. Like, if she broke up with someone because of the umpteenth time she found them with an underaged girl, or if they had B.O. wait, i guess that would be mean...that's why I want Kitty Kelly to write the book, and NOT Stevie... :D

I think that's a convenient way to support your argument, especially since Stevie Nicks would never write anything like that. It's quite a stretch to use such extreme examples when all we're saying is that she should either write it honestly and with details, or she shouldn't write it at all.

 Hope she didn't find out all that in the same day...

I think her autobiography would manage to be simply a very honest and direct self-portrait. Stevie' s too talented as a writer to become squalid talking about her life, but I guess to describe a bad moment she could go in painful and thruthful details. I would only respect her for that.

By the way, I predict something between 600 and 900 pages.. ;)

But that's the entire point I've been making... Stevie would never write anything like the scenarios I wrote. I don't expect her to, and I wouldn't want her to.
So I guess that's why I'm a little lost. When we talk about "details" and "honesty," exactly how detailed and honest are we talking?

This woman has talked about her cocaine addiction, she's talked about her Klonopin addiction, she's talked about abortions, she's talked about passing out on Prince's kitchen floor because she was high and the A.C. was out, she's talked about the hole in her nose, she's talked about losing faith in her songwriting abilities, she's talked about her hair turning completely grey and her skin molting during rehab, she's talked about gaining weight and the struggles to lose it, she's talked about being told by managers that she's fat, she's talked about photographs pointing out that she's "gained weight under the chin," she's talked about her decision to get breast implants, she's talked about those breast implants bursting and causing health problems, she's talked about her doctor keeping her ruptured implants in refrigeration... and so on.

That's all pretty honest to me. So I don't see why it's believed that Stevie would be dishonest simply because she'd have a tendency to romanticize the players. And I don't quite understand how many more "details" people expect.

I don't know that any of us would be all that great at being objective regarding what others think of us.To varying degrees. I think Stevie's especially self-focused, self-obsessed, even. It's just her personality & her temperament. She would be temperamentally unable to get much of a bird's-eye view of the historical record if she were to write her own book. (Personally, I don't think she'll ever write any kind of standard narrative book about herself or Fleetwood Mac -- all she'd ever publish would be parts of her journals & her "prose poems.")

Think back to Stevie's speech to induct Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers into the Hall of Fame: she presented their accomplishments through a strangely self-obsessed filter. She can't really speak or think objectively or analytically -- at least not in any prolonged fashion. Imagine her trying to create an outline for a huge task of expository prose (like a book bio). It wouldn't fly; she couldn't.

Or go back even further to Jim Ladd's interview with her in '83: he asked her about Benmont Tench & all she really had to say was that Benmont helps HER & her "girls" out. Jim responded subtly that he is also known to have played a keyboard part or two in his lifetime. Sometimes little exchanges like this reveal a lot about Stevie's personality & temperament & thinking in general. She doesn't see these talented people around her in her professional life in an analytical sense as musicians -- they're just her friends, which is sweet but it does tend to diminish them in a way.

You can't expect prolonged analysis from Stevie, at least not typically. I think I've posted something like this before. It's a little bit like asking a 5-year-old about her renowned scientist father. "Yeah, but he reads me stories at night."

Wow what a great post David. I tend to agree that at least the younger Stevie did not have any musical ettiquette. Whether on stage or in interviews she did not properly acknowledge the other musicians. In a professional setting and in the studio, this is very insulting. Especially for people like B Tench who have fantastic chops. I do think Stevie got better at this as she got older. I actually saw her acknowlege Christine after Rhinannon when I saw them in concert.

Attention young singers, you should always acknowledge your players!! They will save your ass in return, and probably already have.

These bad habits seem to get worse as time goes on with the entertainment business. :distress:

I mean, if you're going to talk about drama, talk about drama.

If I am telling a story...to my shrink, to a friend, whatever...I get into detail. It's more informative, it's more entertaining. If it is a story about a fight, a typical day, a silly event, whatever. God is in the details. It's part of being a good storyteller. Rarely is a tasteful storyteller a compelling storyteller. Tasteful usually leaves out crucial context and details that flesh out the events.

Stevie can be exceedingly frank in some of her interviews. She has even told stories that don't make her look very good. For crying out loud, how many people would come out and say they have a hole in their septum big enough to pull a belt through ? But, I think she actually would want to wait until everyone is dead, especially her parents and the men she had relationships with. If she ever does get around to writing a book, it won't be for another 20 years anyway, and by then, about 10 of us will care. And, her memory will be completely shot. I can't argue with anything you said. For one thing, there's no reason to. And for another, there's no arguing with the truth.

Stevie is pretty "child-like" in her views of those around her. Which is part of what I was saying in that I feel her autobiography would romanticize the players.

Quite honestly, I've always found that aspect of Stevie's personality refreshing... though I realize others find it exasperating.
But, really, you can find hundreds of performers who regard their musicians and session-men in a professional way, but how often do you find one who actually speaks about these guys (and gals) in terms of FRIENDSHIP?

We all know Benmont can play killer keyboards... I'm pretty sure Stevie knows that too, that's why she wants him around.
But Stevie talks not about what Benmont does within the songs, but what he does for her as a friend and as a fellow music-maker.

And while others might go on and on about Tom Petty's musical accomplishments, and all his multi-platinum albums, and the long string of Top 40 hits, and his various awards, Stevie goes on and on about Tom Petty, the man. The guy who's kind and sweet to her, and gives her a pep talk when she needs it, and whose music gets her toes a-tappin.'

I think that's pretty cool... and as a human-being, I'd find that more touching and flattering than just being praised for my musical abilities.

So, yeah, she's pretty doggone self-absorbed in that her viewpoints stem from how something makes HER feel ("Illume" is a shining example of that), but I think that also keeps her from being just another performer who keeps people... fans, studio musicians, peers... at arm's length.

But even when I used to keep a journal, I never wrote down exact quotes. I didn't focus on the black & white details, but the emotions of it all.
