GOP admits mailing anti-gay fliers (http://www.gay.com/news/article.html?2004/09/24/2)
Christopher Curtis, PlanetOut Network
Published 2004/09/24

On Thursday the Republican Party owned up to sending mass mailings to residents of Arkansas and West Virginia demonizing homosexuals and predicting liberals would ban the Bible if Democrats won in November.

The campaign literature featured a picture of the Bible with the label "banned" slapped on top of it, and a picture of a man proposing to another man with the caption "allowed."

The New York Times reported Christine Iverson, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee (RNC), confirmed the party did send the letters.

"When the Massachusetts Supreme Court sanctioned same-sex marriage and people in other states realized they could be compelled to recognize those laws, same-sex marriage became an issue,'' Iverson told the Times. "These same activist judges also want to remove the words 'under God' from the Pledge of Allegiance."

John Marble, the communications director for the National Stonewall Democrats, told the PlanetOut Network that Iverson's response was indicative of how the Republican leadership feels about LGBT Americans.

"The RNC spokesperson said that gay people basically brought this upon themselves by pushing for marriage equality," Marble said. "And they're trying these fear tactics in states that Democrats can win."

"The Republicans are acting like children," Marble continued. "You only own up to what you've been caught with. I wouldn't be surprised if they had done this in other states," he said. "They finally admitted it after a week and they did it without remorse. It's tantamount to saying they would be happy to do it again."

Sen. John Edwards, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, predicted this tactic would reappear. In a published statement, the senator from North Carolina said President Bush "should condemn the practice immediately and tell everyone associated with the campaign to never use tactics like this again."

Christopher Barron, the political director for the Log Cabin Republicans, said, "This is disgusting -- an embarrassment for the RNC -- and I would hope that the people that get these mailings would be offended."

When asked if the RNC contacted the Log Cabin Republicans about the appropriateness of such tactics, Barron responded, "We're not endorsing the president, so they're not coming to us for what they can do."

"This is evidence that the president's re-election campaign has decided to use gays and lesbians as wedge issues in an attempt to win the election," he said.

"The RNC has several different outreach categories, including snowmobilers, but not gays and lesbians," Barron added.

Yes, it's true. All Democrats want you to dump your hetrosexual partner and partner up and marry--immediately--a homosexual--whether you are one or not. Then we'll ban every Bible out of existence. You know, we're known for that kind of thing--book burning and all--uh--aren't we? We're not? That would be the REPUBLICANS? The hell you say! Well--who knew? Gee, maybe the Democrats need to distribute flyers which say that if the Republicans are elected again, they'll start a war, destroy the economy, pollute the planet. .. oh---they've ALREADY done all of that. So--uhm---I guess the question is--what will they do if folks are dumb enough to give them another four years in office??????

Guess I will vote for the Munster/Edwards ticket after all...Gotta get that 'murderous' book away from the young impressional minds before THEY become corrupted.

Personally nothing surprises me anymore...Oklahomans will get to vote for a amendment to the Oklahoma State Constitution to allow gay marriage/civil unions, But being that this state is full of s**t (Except for Deb & myself) it will get shot down, Even though it allows for 'common law' marriages between a man & a woman.

These religious ASSHOLES are also trying to stop the lottery vote, Where an estimated $70 million would go towards education, In which Oklahoma is one of the worse states education wise, Along with teachers pay (Hell, A fastfood worker could possibly make as much as a state certified teacher...Now tell me what the hell is WRONG with that picture???)

These religious ASSHOLES are also trying to stop the lottery vote, Where an estimated $70 million would go towards education

When they first proposed the Texas lottery and Lotto drawing, "they" swore up, down, backwards, and sideways that the majority of the money would go to education. Guess what? Almost none of it made it to the schools -- it all gets eaten up by administrative costs and a never-ending string of stupid, Stupid, STUPID commercials and advertisements.

Plus, now every convenience store in the state is surrounded by a mile-wide radius of discarded scratch-off tickets and losing Lotto slips, yet they have yet to make one of the infamous "Don't Mess With Texas" anti-littering commercials about it. Are you saying you're for the OK lottery? I would humbly suggest that you guys don't fall into the same trap...

As for the Republican mailing, all I can say is that I'm not surprised.

Whenever I see one of these Christian-propaganda issues, it reminds me of my fave line from Woody Allen's "Hannah and Her Sisters":

"If Jesus Christ came back to Earth today and saw all of the things going on 'in His name', he would never stop throwing up."

definitely (Though I am for upping the pay for teachers), But it will probably pass no matter what my vote is (I pretty know any money for a lottery will disappear because of "administrated costs', The same way the $$$$ for the turnpikes which were to help with road repairs disappeared under our former CROOK Democratic Governor Walters. Man, it was really f**ked up when he was finally caught though, lol!!!)

ANYTHING that goes against the blind-leading-the-blind-flock Bible thumpin' zealots is fine in my books.

Btw, If Jesus came back to Earth now, People would clamour for Him to make the world right, I think his response would be "What the f**k do you think I am? A miracle worker? Jeez you people are so f**ked up and ya expect me to right everything...Screw youse guys, I'm going to the nudie bar."

I agree -- teachers should be paid as much, if not more than the do-nothing corporate CEOs who are robbing us blind. Not to mention the teachers should be paid more than the zombie school administrators & counselors...

A story on the local news tonight was about two girls in a Houston high school who got into a fight over the weekend, and decided to continue/finish it in school today. One of the girls brought a boxcutter to school in her purse (just in case, I guess), and slashed the other girl's throat with it. Who do you think broke up the fight? A TEACHER!!! The security guards were nowhere to be found, even though the fight took place in a common area, and the security guards had been notified that the girls had already squabbled earlier in the morning... BTW, the girl whose throat was slashed survived, and was reported in fair/good condition.

Jesus in a nudie bar? Isn't that a South Park episode? ;)

Luckily in GA the lotto money does go to education, although only higher education. The HOPE Scholarship of GA (inacted by former Gov. Zell Miller--one of the few things that makes me like him, most things make me hate him) is fully funded by the GA Lotto, and provides ALL GA students who have a B Average through high school, fully funded in state college tuition plus money for books, as long as they keep the B Average in college---i receive the scholarship..and thank God for it..I wish all states would do this

Teachers, police officers, firefighters, all deserve much better pay. The only problem is, if you pay them a whole lot of money, will you get people in there who just want to do it for the money, and will that create a whole lot of great and dedicated teachers? I dunno it's a good question to ponder

I feel like this whole country is a mess.

I totally support the gay community. 100%. They should be allowed the same rights 100% THEY ARE NO DIFFERENT. but
I totally believe in GOD as well.

I totally am terrified a new man in office will leave us vunerable for attack

I am totally terrified to keep the same man because look at the state of the country.

My friend - alot alot alot of people feel the same way. AND - having it shoved down our throates 24/7 on the news channels does nothing but heighten the fear. In the end, I am voting for Kerry because if I had an employee who made the mistakes W did, I would fire them without hesitation. But, Kerry is no bed of roses - so "faith is a hard thing to hold onto . . ."

See, Janet, the trouble is that extreme-conservatives and extreme-Christians have made this out to be a Gays vs. God thing.
It's not that. At all. And it never has been.

No one is looking to go against the bible. No one is looking to go against God.
We're just looking for the same rights as everyone else. Mind you, we're not looking for more rights than others, and we're not looking for special rights. Just equal rights.

God created us ALL in His likeness... He didn't just create the people who don't make us feel uncomfortable.

Two men or two women marrying will do no more to damage the "sanctity of marriage" than the millions of heterosexuals who get married and divorced over and over again. I realize you understand that, but, unfortunately, the extremists either don't see that or don't want to admit it.

I'm not at all worried about a new president in office increasing the chance for more acts of terrorism on American soil, because I firmly believe that ANY man (or woman!) elected president in these times, will have no choice but to be strong on the issue of terrorism.
I really don't think we're ever going to go back to the times when we arrogantly believed that things like that could never happen here.

I'm far more concerned about Bush having another four years to further erode our economy, our civil rights, and our relationships with other countries.

But in a way, I think also some people who would be good and dedicated DON'T teach because it's not enough money...As far as police officers go - I think that's where most of the danger would lay (lie?). I already think that most people who become cops have some weird complexes (most) and if you added more money to that - Bleah! My friend teaches ESL kinder/first, and she just got her masters which, I think, brought her up to 60k from 55k? around there. But most teachers don't make that much, even. I think that should be about right for STARTING teachers, non biligual...

I feel more vulnerable to another terrorist attack with GWB in office, than I would with Kerry. GWB has wrecked our allies in the world..God help us if we do NEED help under Bush's watch, no-one would help us...The world is NOT safer since this war has gone on, it gets less and less safe every hour...
John Kerry, like someone said, will be strong on terrorism--any President will...But this war in Iraq is costing way to much to be producing no results, and to not be making the world any safer

Chris
