View Full Version : Which part do you sing?

When you're listening to Rumours lineup Mac, do you tend to sing along with Chris, Stevie or Lindsey? Do you always sing the lead, or do you sometimes sing background?
For me, it kind of depends on the song. For most songs, I sing along with whoever is singing lead on that particular song. If there's 3 part harmony, I usually do Stevie (Chris is usually too high for me - yeah, like I sound SO much better singing lower!) A few songs are different:
I usually sing the "ooooh lalala, ooooh lalala" part in The Dance version of SYLM & don't sing anything else but the chorus
Crystal - I sing w/ LB until Stevie comes in & sings the "I turned around..." harmony - then I switch to her part.
The Chain is a mess when I sing it. I love it so much, and I try to sing a little of everyone's part. Terrible!
Paula
PS - yes, this is a stupid topic, but it's been slow around here & I was bored!

lol...great question...I just sing with whoever is the lead...when there's the three part thing I sing with Stevie...lower range thing works better for me too :)
Pretty much I just sing anything...I love singing along with music...then I can't hear myself well and that works out much better than if I could hear myself hehe...I really can't sing well at all...
Oh, anything. Lóve figuring out the harder-to-hear harmony parts.
I even sing along with the guitar solo's. :D

Yes I do that. Love those ooooh lalalas
I tend to sing along mainly when I'm in the car. As I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket I find I sing along mostly in the car when I'm on my own (it's kinder to others that way especially those of a nervous disposition)
If I'm singing Lindsey's part I sing like him (or what I fondly imagine sounds like him) and the same with Chris and Stevie. When I do The Chain it's quite something because I have to try and sing like all three. For some reason the words scalded and cat are coming into my head!

I always, always sing along with Stevie no matter what. Since i am a teenager and my voice changed I cannot sing songs I could before the change. But yes I can still sing alice :)
I cant sing Silver Springs anymore which sucks. When i was like 10-11 i used ot be able to do stevies crazy rhiannon from rosebud now i can barely do SYW version!

I usually sing with whoever is the lead singer. Harmonies are either Stevie or Lindsey since Chris's voice is too high for me. But, believe me, it's all BAD! I have a good time, though, so I guess that's really all that matters in the end.

Stevie- her songs are usually the easiest to sing.

It depends. I usually sing everyone's parts...but Chris a little less. I enjoy singing the harmonies much more than the leads. There are usually so many parts that work. And, it is fun doing them in different octaves. The one thing about Stevie singing in her lower range all the time is now I know I can sing all her leads in the right octave !
Couldn't do that in the early years.

Ok, well then I'm the FIFTH!
Really, I can't sing worth a damn, so when I do it (alone in my car) I usually sing with Stevie or Lindsey. Chris is too high for me too.
I like singing the whoa-oh-oh's in Eyes of the World on LIB--I think I've got that part down pretty well.

I usually sing the background part. I'm not one to steal the spotlight. I like to ad-lib throughout.....being part of the backup band gives me the freedom to do so.

It all depends on what parts I like, I know that I will sing along with Stevie/Lindsey/Christine all the time; just depends on which parts are the catchiest(sp?)lol. My range is closest to Chris's though.
I love harmony so I'm usually singing that. It's pretty easy, even within the Rumours line-up to find a harmony that none of them are singing but otherwise I think I pretty much sing Chris's parts.
I find when I start singing Stevie's lead parts I sing them like Cher  Don't ask me why!

I'm tone deaf too but that doesn't stop me from wailing away, Chiffon Head that I am, to all the Stevie tunes. And I sing her harmony & backing vocal parts in Chris & Lindsey's songs.

I'm another one who prefers the back vocals, with some noble exceptions like Beautiful Child where I sing all the parts :D

I find myself usually going for Lindsey's because I tend to sound a lot like him when I sing. Christine's parts are usually really tough to hit. But the good thing about the three-part harmony in most songs is that you can switch off at any point and not look/sound too bad :D Just like GYOW, you can pretty much do anything during that chorus and be good to go. I got up at a piano bar one time and sang that and I'm amazed (due to the fact that by that point I had a few beers in me) that I made it through.
The great thing about Stevie/Lindsey songs (Dreams, Angel, Beautiful Child, Crystal, etc. etc.) is that you can sing the lead while you're driving and be all into it, and when you pull up to a red light next to someone you can switch to 'back-up' and tune it down a notch so they don't see you
As for the guitar solos, I almost passed out trying to sing along to the guitar at the end of "Gypsy" one time. It's quite a load! "Eyes of the World" and "Wrong" are a lot of fun to sing too, and "Don't Let Me Down Again" which I think is one of my personal fav's.
Awesome question :-)

LOL Awesome! I <333333333333333 Cher!
this is a great thread....i was just thinking this to myself the other day. i've always felt sort of funny all these years singing to stevie tunes....and i'm man enough to admit it! who cares anyway.
so....i sing whatever notes my voice allows me. sometimes i have good days and can sing in a higher key than others. on those days i sing the highest part of the harmony. on gyow, obviously i sing Lindsey's lead but i usually end up doing the middle part of the chorus. i'll attempt to do the high part but it's not always easy. sometimes you can hit a note and hold it there but you lose it when you have to enunciate the rest of the words. i can pretty much do Lindsey on the chain except the "still (hear you saying)" part i have to really concentrate. sometimes i'll end up doing stevie's part if it aint workin otherwise.
i've never taken voice lessons but it's something i'm interested in for sure. i love singing. i can hold a note and think i have a decent voice. got cut the smokes out. maybe i'll take lessons one of these days.

LOL! Precisely!
On another note, I will also admit to doing little moves/dances that I've seen them do while singing a particular song. Mainly Stevie looking out of the corner of her eye during the Chain on the Tusk Doc. And I've been known to play air guitar or pound the keys on a table (aka: fake piano) with the best of them...

Heheheh....me too! These days I'm particuarly fond the LIB moves:
a) The over-the-head tambourine during EOTW
b) Jazz hands during Gypsy
No matter what moves I do, though, I still sound like Gail's poor cat....

I used to sing soprano in a choir, so I often go for the higher harmonies:) But the best high harmonies are Stevie's in her early days, for example her harmony on Say You Love Me, it kicks *ss
as for guitar solos, you should hear me wail the I'm So Afraid-bit ;)

Bwah! Jazz hands! I always have to do the Mirage hand thing for "little bit of fear" in Gypsy too....
I sing all the parts - I like to practice Sharon's stuff for my next career as a back up singer for Stevie. ;)
And I have been known to prance around my living room w/ my tambo - a la EOTW from the Mirage era - where she leans back and then marches across the stage.

I usually sing along with Lindsey's parts. Sometimes on a Chris or Stevie song, when Lindsey isn't singing I sing C/S's part, but when Lindsey comes in I switch to his parts. Sometimes I sing C/S's parts throughout. It depends on what I feel like singing.

I always sing Christine's parts... which is NOT an easy task as a male with a Bass range, lol (Ok, maybe Baritone)
BTW, on the verses in The Chain, Chris is singing the melody. The chorus and ending, Lindsay is singing melody. Stevie changes her part every few years, lol.

Harmony all the way. I love figuring out what everyone in the background is singing. It's a challenge. :) I've thrown in a third harmony on the top of the chorus of SYW, but I think it adds a little too much.
By far the coolest thing I've noticed so far -- when Stevie's doing her "just think what tomorrow will do" on LIB (probably any of the SYW shows), if you sing what would have been Chris's part there, it's a perfect harmony. I get chills when I sing it.

I know - Stevie comes up with INCREDIBLE harmony!!!!!!!!!! I think people whi know nothing of harmony and the effort it takes to be able to listen to the lead and follow them - think the harmony just happens

Chris's voice is too high for me.
...which I've always thought is so weird since her speaking voice is so deep!
I sing along with Chris's part the most since my voice is mid-range to high. I try to sing along with Stevie but her voice is so damn low! A good example is Gypsy-- I tried to sing that for the longest time but I just can't get my voice low enough for that register. It's a toughy vocally.

Umm... as a music student, all this talk of adding extra harmonies disturbs me greatly!
I'll bet most of you are just doubling parts in other octaves... The 3 Macsters would make a triad-chord, which is in itself 2 harmonies to a melody.
You can't really add a '4th' harmony unless you're singing something else, like a 7th or something (Music terms! :P), which probably wouldn't sound very good!
Even in the more current releases, there are extra vocals filling the triad... there's not much you can add!
Sorry... just a music nut.

sometimes you're right. but, i find a new blend every now and then. And also, what can be fun, is finding the harmony Stevie sang with herself, which is usually hard to discern, and not that prominent. And i say that a lot of times, fm harmonies are so seamless, that it is fun, and beneficial to the music, to bring out a lesser heard (but awesome) harmony. Seriously, to me, with this band, the vocal fun never ends...make up new ones, blend two into a different one, bring out one that's hard to hear...it's all good.

I don't know a thing about music, but I think it's safe to say we all think we sound better than we actually do - or we know we suck so we only sing our own little "harmony" when we're alone! :)
