I just got back home from seeing John Water's new flick called "A Dirty Shame." If you are a John Waters fan, run, do not walk, to see it. While it is no Hairspray (my fav. ) it is fab.
Trust me when I say you will NEVER be able to think of the Hookey Pokey the same way again!!!!!!!!

Anyway - I didn't know that he had a new flick out....any synopsis you can give without giving the movie away?

Wasn't it fabulous?! I haven't laughed so hard since I saw Desperate Living when I was thirteen.

I met John when he did a show here a couple of months ago, he's the nicest fellow. I got him to sign my "Trash Trio" book (scripts for Pink Flamingos, the unfilmed sequel to it, and Female Trouble) and my Polyester Odor-Rama card.

It's about white trash in Baltimore that become sex addicts after being hit in the head. It's got Tracey Ullman, Chris Isaak, Johnny Knoxville, Selma Blair, and the all the other Waters regulars in it.

No, if you didn't like Hairspray, you should see a psychiatrist, like the one John Waters plays in the movie who wields a swirling hypnosis wheel and cattle-prod. :wavey:
Just kidding - I know John Waters movies are not everyone's cup of tea (mushroom tea, that is...). But they are hilarious nonetheless. I can't wait to see A Dirty Shame! I'm glad he went against the distributor's wishes and decided to wear the NC-17 rating like a badge of honor instead of something to be ashamed of.

There is actually a bar here in San Antonio that will play FEMALE TROUBLE every now and then on their tv's. It's pretty entertaining to sit in a bar and have about 20 drunk guys all say in unison, "Queers are just better! I'd be so proud if you was a fag and had a nice beautician boyfriend! I'd never have to worry!" LOL
A DIRTY SHAME was hysterical. Some great lines for sure..."You wanna yodel in my canyon?" LOL

How did I know that you would love these movies ? I can't remember where I saw your post with the Desperate Living quotes...but OMG, those Grizelda lines...other than my closest friends, no one I know has ever quoted the handbag and tampax lines. SO damned funny.
Mink lives very near me, and I met her last summer while she was judging the Queen of Silverlake pagaent. She is such a hoot. One of my friends sees her all the time in her Curves class. How rich is that ?

I know. Desperate Living is my favorite Waters flick. The lines from that movie are just as funny each time you watch it.
"I'm out here working my ass off all day and you're out here f*ckin' midgets!"
"Bitch at the air, bitch at the tree, but PLEASE, don't bitch AT US!"
"Get it, Peggy, get it!"
"DOWN, BOY, DOWN, DOWN!"
"I ain't your maid anymore, bitch, I'm your sista in crime!"
"I've got a Barbie doll crotch!"
And that ending where they kill Mink, OMG, that's hysterical.

One of my fav. exchanges EVER in a move was:
EDNA: Ooh, Tracy, what do you think about this one?
TRACY: I like it.
EDNA: Oh, Wilbur would kill us if we spent that much money.
PINKY: You look gorgeous, Bertha, simply exquisite!
BERTHA: Oh, I don't know, Pinky.
PINKY: Have an eclair. Eat up girls, eat up. Big is beautiful. Tracy Turnblad! Welcome to the Hefty Hideaway House of Fashion for the ample woman. Hi, I'm Mr. Pinky.
TRACY: Hi.
EDNA: Mr. Pinky, I'm Tracy's business manager, Edna Turnblad.
PINKY: Well, it's a pleasure to meet the both of you. Here, we cater to the big-boned gals like yourself who are stylish and at the same time frustrated by the lack of sizes in the department stores today. I saw you on TV. I want you to be my model!
EDNA: Would she be paid for this?
PINKY: One free outfit a month. You start tomorrow. I hope there's no diets in the works because I want to design your Miss Auto Show coronation gown myself!
EDNA: Could you throw in a couple of complimentary pettipants in the deal?
PINKY: You drive a hard bargain, Miss Edna, and rightfully so. Pettipants, pettigirdle, you just let Tracy take her pick.
EDNA: How about a fabulous frock just for me?
PINKY: Tracy'll have to work one extra day for free.
EDNA: It's a deal! Thank you, Mr. Pinky!
PINKY: Ha ha ha. I'm going to make you a star!
________________________________________________________________
That whole scene was BRILLIANTLY played by Divine AND Waters actually used the word "pettipants" -- I laugh out loud in my car by myself sometimes when I think of this scene from Hairspray

Um, isn't there singing, bad makeup, and unattractive people who do gross things in them? Maybe i'm thinking of something else....I don't much like camp, rarely singing in movies, and ugly people? with bad makeup? doing gross things? ehhhh.....But please, tell me if I'm wrong, or if it's so funny that I could not live without seeing it...

Ummm ... most of the "offensive" things you listed can be found right here on this board. ;) (Except for the singing ... but I'm sure that will be in the next software update.) Ugly unattractive people in bad makeup doing gross things -- that's basically Dissention in a nutshell - did you hear what he wore to the Live in Boston taping???
(Yes, I'm kidding again, especially about Diss... The subject of John Waters just puts me in a VERY weird mood.)
In all honesty, most John Waters movies are not for the faint at heart, or for that matter for anyone with any morals whatsoever. I'd call them social satires, but thickly frosted with gross-out humor and plenty of "do-you-think-we-can-get-away-with-putting-this-on-film" moments. For instance, in "Pink Flamingos", Divine (a morbidly obese drag queen) eats a freshly laid pile of real dog doo. No, I'm not kidding. But yes, after I finished suppressing my gag reflex to NOT thow up, I did laugh long and hard.
Some people are physical daredevils, some people are chemical daredevils, some people are sexual daredevils, etc. JW just mixes them all together in a big pot and tries to offend as many people as possible in the process. I guess it's an acquired taste.
But you only live once, right? :]

Not only does she go there, but she was stunned and amazed that people recognized her and wanted to talk to her. About 7 years ago, I rented a house that she had just looked at in the same neighborhood as Curves. Very small world. By all accounts, she is humble and totally cool....

Well, AMber, it takes a certain kind of sense of humor. If you like it, you love it. If you don't like it, you just shake your head and walk away. I say it is worth renting Desperate Living at your local video store...(an indy...Blockbuster would NOT carry it). If you think Dissention, Strand or I are remotely funny in our cynical and off beat way....you might get a few laughs out of it. Do you think drag queens are funny ? How about Dame Edna ? Those are both a pretty good litmus test.

They're ok - it depends on if they say something clever and witty - i'm not easily offended - except by bad writing. I tend to not like "ugly" things (like morbidly obese people in bad makeup eating poo) but if it's witty - like, i like southpark, but that's a cartoon, isn't it? So, it's not really that i'll be offended, it's more like i'm scared i'll be very aesthetically displeased... Plus, too much singing in a movie? Bleah. (unless it's grease, or cabaret, or there is REALLY good dancing going with it.) I guess i should check one out, they sound pretty good. I mean, i've seen All About Eve and Party Girl, like 15 times, surely I can take the time for John Waters, right?
Amber (by the way, y'all don't have to type my name like this - AMber - it's just a finger mistake i make :wavey: )

With the exception of Cry-Baby, no Waters movie has any singing in it.
His movies are an acquired taste and you have to have an open mind when you watch them. They're mostly all low budget (the old ones especially), are kinda grainy and discolored, and don't have big stars in them; he made them with friends in Baltimore.
My advice would be to check out some newer Waters flicks before you dive into his old ones from the seventies. Serial Mom (Kathleen Turner is a hoot), Pecker (rent it just for Memama), and Cecil B. Demented (I love Melanie Griffith in this one) are nasty, but nowhere near as nasty as the old movies. Don't watch any of them around kids, they'll be scarred for life.
After you've seen those, try his old movies. My personal favorite is Desperate Living and if you don't find it hysterical, I won't know what to think. ;) Female Trouble is hilarious, too, but that's incredibly hard to find on video, it's really only available on DVD. Don't watch Pink Flamingos unless you have a very strong stomach because, while hilarious, some of the **** in that movie is sickening (I programmed my DVD player to skip over the chicken scene). You might like Polyester, too; the music is by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. But don't watch it unless you have an Odor-Rama card!
Also, if you're feeling adventurous, FYE is getting rid of videos throughout their entire chain and the four stores around here have the "John Waters Collection" for $15; they probably have it near you. It's got Pink Flamingos, Desperate Living, Polyester, and Hairspray.

This description and advice is perfect for me. ok, i remember i wanted to see serial mom anyway, just never got around to it. Only cry baby has singing, check (that must be the one i saw part of) Then watch desperate living. Pink Flamingos is probably to sickening for me, got it. May need to see polyester at least because of Chris and Debbie, check. I don't know if we have an FYE, but that sure is a good price!
Thanks Diss, preciate it :xoxo:

That is good advice - I wish someone would have given me that advice...but I was with a group of friends - all of whom just decided at random to rent movies with Divine in them - I'd never heard of John Waters or Divine...and my first exposure was a night of Lust in the Dust (not that bad), Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos....that was six years ago....only the other night was I able to watch Female Trouble again and appreciate it for what it is....
So as I was totally shocked and quite disturbed upon seeing them for the first time, I've totally found the entertainment value...and enjoy a John Waters flick now and again :D
