Let's post our favorite Lindsey "lines" from a song..
I'll start with
"I keep the dream in my pocket, never let it fade away" from TITN
and
"There’s a shadow on my daddy’s stone, where he was laid, laid to rest.
I ask him is this just a dream, or is it just another test?
I turn my back against the cold, I turn my face into the wind
And I wonder will I ever, ever make it home again?
Shadow on daddy’s stone, ten years gone, it seems
I ask him will I ever stop, ever stop dreaming dreams?!
He said never, never, never..." from Street of Dreams

"Melodies awaken sorrows from their sleep"
"The dreams of a lifetime told me wrong." (Of course)
"Buy another picture
Tell another lie
Paint another picture
See who's surprised."
"Look around but you won't see me.
Just a picture of what I used to be."

Here are some of mine:
"You can love me baby but you can't walk out, someone oughta tell you what it's really all about."
and
"Packin up, shackin up's all you wanna do." Duh
and
"I'm a soul drifter and I'm out of this town, ain't no use hangin 'round, you see. My heart was broken, my part was spoken, now the ground has opened all around me..."
and
"Now someone is dead and gone. The hurt that you feel makes you strong. Time is allowed. Make him proud. Just go out and turn it on!" (I lost my brother 3 years after Lindsey wrote this :( , so I really gained a new appreciation for this song!)
and, of course, my signature.

"Shadow all your hopes with love, live your life without a doubt
Outside in, inside out"
"Just a time within a time, a scheme within a scheme
A little world within a world, a dream, just a dream."
"You can hurt, you can heal, you can reach for the light
You could trust in yourself if you’d give it a try."
"Anyone at all could see you were dying, but no one was crying
And the lips you were kissing, night after night, all bathed in blue, all bathed in white..."
"It's been so long since I've held you, I'd forgotten what love is for."
"Faces of liars, faces of glass, walk on the wire but they won’t get past
Hold me darlin’, don’t let go, save each other from a world of woe"
"Sitting in the shade, under the dreaming tree
How the madness fades..."

"There's so many fine people that I believe in... they don't care where I'm going, it's not their show."
"Oh, I let you slip away -- there was nothing I could do... that was so long ago, still I often think of you."
"Somebody's gotta see this through -- all the world is laughing at you... somebody's gotta sacrifice, if this whole thing's gonna turn out right."
"Always do what you should -- always be good... and when push comes to shove -- pray for guidance from above...."
"The closing of a chapter... the opening of a door... brings forth life, where there was no life before...."
"I wonder if they'll ever understand... the trials of a freedom seekin' man...."
"Time recedes with a fatal drop... dusty fury on the mountaintop...."
"Ohh, the sun is hot -- a man is just a man... when the darkness comes, you've got to do with what you've got... I'm doing what I can."
"You can hurt, you can heal, you can reach for the light... you could trust in yourself, if you'd give it a try...."
"I have no children... just some design...."

"Two kinds of people in this world
Winners, losers
I lost my power in this world
'Cause I did not use it"
"Two kinds of trouble in this world
Livin', dying
I lost my power in this world
And the rumours are flying"
All of "Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind"
"There's a shadow on my daddy's stone
Where he was laid, laid to rest
I ask him is this just a dream
Or is it just another test?
I turn my back against the cold
I turn my face into the wind
I wonder will I ever, will I ever, ever make it home again?
Shadow on my daddy's stone
Ten years gone, it seems

Will I ever stop, ever stop dreaming dreams?

All of "Down on Rodeo"

One of my favourite LB quotes is what he says at the end of the "Making Of Rumours" DVD....but I must admit that I'm not sure what he says exactly....does anyone know exactly what he says here?
"If you're any good at all, you know you can be better. You try to keep grounded in your process, in your work. And the challenge of doing that, emits/amidst (???) the madness of the set/said (???) machinery. Some people can do it, and some can't. I'm not saying that I've always been able to do that, but I am saying that I've always tried to do that. And then eventually you can define yourself, or a portion of yourself, through the choices you've made."
(The Chain is in the background, and he gives that really cool nod...! The first time I saw that it gave me goosebumps...!)

She sticks the camera right into her arm
Anything to forget what the trouble's about
It causes her pain,
That's part of the charm
She's down for the count then finally out
Miranda is taking the stars down
A little something to call her own
But the lion still rules Miranda
And Miranda is always alone
She sees her face in another magazine
And the walls all close in as the fancy takes flight
Can't stand to be loved,
But she loves to be seen
She slips down headlong into the night

And the world's turned to stone
That's when you've got to fly, fly away home"

I can walk anytime
But the lone highway
Is the only way"
"No one cares which way the wind blows
Someone's got to change your mind"

Well, although I'll always say "Fate takes time," I can't go through the whole career, but let me do some of the most recent favorites:

"In my younger days, I was mistaken for a whore."
"Tarantula passes by the window, no one takes it as a sign."
"Everyone's peace lives side by side with their war."
And my favorite from UTS:
"I'm a madman out on a badman route"

Lindsey says some interesting things. I mean, even if it's not monumental, it sometimes resounds so deeply with me. As I always say, I love when he said of John that he could get John to back off if he wanted, but he doesn't. You learn to appreciate that tension of thinking that someone is going to run all over you (your guitar lines) and then they don't. I think that's a great quote about relationships in general. There's both a tension and a trust going on there. Friction and faith -- and that's the definition of "chemistry."
This is minor, but there was one interview where I think swimming came up and Lindsey said he went to a restaurant and the owner had all these pictures of himself playing sports in college or something and Lindsey observed that the guy must really not like being a restaurant owner.
I'm just paraphrasing here. The point is, I really liked that different way of saying he doesn't live in the past. He wasn't talking about Rumours or music or anything. He just looked at someone else's wall hangings and how they had nothing to do with the man's present life and made a statement about it.
As for lyrics, Memories awaken sorrow from their sleep . . .
Plus, Miranda is pretty solid all the way through. Every.single.line.
Can't stand to be loved, but she loves to be seen.
Loneliness follows Miranda and Miranda is always alone.
Miranda is taking the stars down, a little something to call her own.
She never comes. She always goes.
She slips the camera right into her arm, anything to forget what the trouble's about.
She slips down the shade and lets herself drown.
"And did you ever wonder the places we would go? And did you realize we felt your woe?"
"If we forgive ourselves we might be whole, but you know that wishing, wishing won't make it so?"
"What am I doing anyway? Telling myself it's not too late."

"You don't belong here

Whisper murder in your ear
You just keep it so well hid.
Anyone at all, could see what was missing
Could see you were dying, but no one was crying.
And the lips you were kissing, night after night
All were bathed in blue, all bathed in white....
Red rover, red rover, red rover, we come, we come, we come to take you over."
Also this...

There's a passage in Bleak House where the housekeeper speaks of Honoria Dedlock's removed, independent manner and says "you go your own way."
I aways wondered if Lindsey had seen that line. Read it in school and had it stay with him, until he finally put it to a somewhat different use.

Right Place To Fade:
You were living under the reign of kings
You were living under the gun
I know it made you do a lot of things
You wish that you'd never done

Come along lay down and talk to me
Tell me all your fear will allow
It doesn't matter who we thought we were
We ain't got time for that now

Looking out for love
In the night so still
Oh Ill build you a kingdom
In that house on the hill
Looking out for love
Big, big love
You said that you love me
And that you always will
Oh you begged me to keep you
In that house on the hill
Looking out for love
Big, big love
I wake up alone
With it all
I wake up
But only to fall
Looking out for love
Big, big love
Just looking out for love

You know what? I'm not even usually aware of that. I mean, when I first read the liner notes, I appreciated it, but I forgot about it. Thank you for reminding me. It's very beautiful.
We've heard FM likened to a kingdom -- in Stevie's songs at least.
Lindsey holds the reins, trying to guide the direction of the music and its creativity.
And rain . . . well, rain is not unlike the rain in Bel Air Rain, or even that in his rain room. It's about release, freedom and resignation, but not the cowed kind of resignation that's associated with giving up. It's more appreciation, acceptance and deciding not to fight against what is meant to be. As he said, running away from obsession and fear -- of course, all of the lyrics in that song are stark, strong and gripping.
It feels so cold; it feels like sin.

Yes it's about letting go of control (rein), power (reign), and conflict (rain=tempestuousness=fighting) in a single breath. It's a song about Linsey letting go of his psychoses and saving himself from emotional ruin.
An amazing song and lyric. Lindsey is one of the real greats.

Go Your Own Way
The line that changed my life:
"Packin' up, shackin' up is all you wanna do."
 Guess whose favorite line that is, too...

Yes it's about letting go of control (rein), power (reign), and conflict (rain=tempestuousness=fighting) in a single breath.
Right and when I've been singing it for the last few years, I forgot about the different spellings and I was just thinking rain, rain, rain for all three, forgetting how it was different in the liner notes.

A rare example where the words being in the liner notes actually makes a big difference -- because otherwise I think we'd all assume "rain rain rain."
