View Full Version : Howard Stern mentions F-Mac

I was listening to Howard Stern at work and he happened to be talking about Soundstage. He said that on his day off yesterday or so he got really roped into the Fleetwood Mac concert. I always wondered what he'd think about the band, and he actually had a lot of good things to say!
He basically was explaining how neat it was to watch their performance after all the history they've been through. Of course, as is the norm with Howard he had things slightly off (Stevie was married to Lindsey and then was banging the drummer, apparently). But it was neat to watch them 'all in love' now and able to sing these romantic songs to one another on stage, as opposed to back when they were in turmoil and whatnot.
He said 'first right away I want to say that Lindsey Buckingham has to be one of the most underrated guitar players in the world' which is definitely the usual thing I hear DJ's or TV hosts say about him the most. He also went on to say that Stevie's still pulling off twirls and manuevers like she did when she was hot. He then goes into how it's weird when chicks are hot and then become fat when you haven't seen them in a while (he wondered if Lindsey had to be thinking 'how did I ever bang this chick?' while he's singing to/with her, hehehe). But other than Stevie's shift in body frame, he had nothing but positive things to say! Even complimented Mick on being a kick-ass drummer who looked like he was going to keel over behind the set but kept going.
He played Stevie's dedication to Lindsey and went into Landslide for a bit, and then played the opening of "The Chain". It made my day - I totally expected him to bash them for being a washed up band or something like that, but he actually recommended the concert bigtime and said he'd love to go see them live. Too late, Howard :-D
Just figured I'd share. It made my day.

Very cool. I love the old Stern 1990 interview w/ John and Chris, it is a riot. (Mick was too stoned to really speak much and Rick Vito didn't have headphones!) Howard kept harping on why LB had left the band, how stupid that was etc.
Gosh I used to listen to Stern every day, back in my former 'pre-kids' life. :)

I work from midnight to 9am, so once you get to 6am you're pretty much flatlining. So when he comes on it really wakes you up and keeps you going when my Red Bull and caramel machiatos have worn off :-D I really didn't like him at first (as most people tend to do) but I've warmed up to him a lot since then.

I wonder if it occured to him to wonder if Christine ever thinks when she looks at John "how did I ever bang this guy?" now he's got a bit more condition on him? Or if Stevie ever thinks about Mick "how did I ever bang this guy" now that he's bald?
Or can those sort of thoughts only happen to men?

Yeah, it seems to be ingrained in society that a man can stay attractive, or get *more* attractive, as he ages, but the same is not true for women. We get older, we get heavier, we go grey, things sag a little...while the same things happen to a guy and he is said to look 'distinguished'. hmmph.
FWIW I still think Mick and John look adorable. Frankly IMO Mick looks better than he ever has, I find him pretty sexy these days. :)

According to Howard, it's only men, lol. Figures that today is the day I called in to work today so I missed my usual a.m. Howard drive.
I've heard him briefly mention Mac & Stevie a few times in the past, usually talks about how hot Stevie was back in the day. And always positive stuff about thier music. It would be so great if Mac would go on Stern, but I'm sure they never would. I can only imagine what La Nicks thinks of the show

Yeah, I think that interview is hilarious. He was really focused on Lindsey's hair for some reason saying it was too high. lol. I especially love the part where he asks Christine what "Behind the Mask" is about and she says it's about a creep and he says so "it's about Lindsey then." LOL. I can tell that Mick and Christine were really annoyed in that interview.

I think John and Chris did a great job fielding Howard's innapropriate questions, such as, "So do you guys ever feel any of that old passion for each other?" A man after my own heart. :D
And another favorite: "Isn't your wife jealous that you're out on the road w/ Christine?"
John: "Nah, she's out out w/ her boyfriend!"
LOL they were hysterical. Mick did have some outbursts but they were minimal, he was out of it.

That's ubercool. But it would be hard for even howard to bash a band that are so obviously great live performers and great musicians.... :woohoo:

Yes, how dare he make a crude comment about a celebrity! C'mon, man, this is Howard Stern. And while everyone can disagree, he has a point. She most certainly is not what I'd classify as "hot." Pretty? Hell yes. Gracefully aged? Hell yes (with the assist of mucho pancake make-up and possible face work). But not "hot." She's too matronly to be "hot," IMO.

Because she's wearing pancake make-up three inches thick. But she does look particularly good during Rhiannon and Gypsy.

Well let's put it this way- there aren't a lot of woman pushing sixty who are as good looking as Stevie, if I do say so myself.
And I don't think her makeup is any different then usual- it is just so obvious because for some reason the camera man wanted us to see up her nose. That is the only annoying part about LIB- the Stevie close ups are insane! Why oh why did they do that to her? Do they want us to see every imperfection on a person's face? If I was videotaped that close up I'd hope that I had pancake makeup on!

I cannot stand the way Stevie is filmed on LiB. All the close ups of her are her right cheek and the right side of her nose. Its God awful.
I think Howard is pretty funny most of the time. Whenever he talks about Stevie, its usually about how "hot" he thought she was "way back when". His comments about what Lindsey thinks when he looks at her now, (how did I bang her?) are so typical Howard.

If you have had the opportunity of seeing Stevie up close recently and it seems as if many Ledgies have (during SYW shows), I don't know how you could deny how beautiful she was and IS. No, she no longer looks like a 30 year old woman, but if only women 30 and younger are beautiful - we have a VERY NARROW perception of beauty.
I saw her in July from about 5 feet away and she is really jaw dropping in my opinion.

That's because her usual make-up is LOTS of pancake make-up.
Regardless, I do think she's a beautiful woman, no doubt about it. But she strikes me as too matronly to be hot. If she wants to be hot, she should take cues from Debbie Harry, who's the same age and is smoking. Not because she's the most beautiful she has ever looked, but because she just projects youthfulness when she's almost sixty. I find that a uber-sexy and hot. There were a few times on LIB during Rhiannon where Stevie looked like her old seventies self, though!!!!!!!!!!

Well what is making her look matronly? And what is Debbie doing that Stevie isn't?
What is making her look matronly ? Schlumpy shoes and an extra 30 pounds, for starters. And some of her clothes tend to make her look a little lumpy. All the layers add up and bulk her up, and seem to affect the way she moves. She can get wound up, peppy, and animated (mostly during SB), but often on stage she doesn't display a lot of physicality. Bad hip, sore feet, whatever the cause - she just doesn't move like a young person. I can't imagine her going on a hike, running, riding a bike, swimming, or doing other things that a vital, fit, and (IMO) sexy person would do.
Debbie Harry, on the other hand, seems to be cat-like, lithe, and electrified. There's a physical confidence that radiates from her. She comes off scrappy, wiry, and spunky. If she was pissed, I think she'd try to kick my ass and would get in a few good punches. And I'm in pretty damned good shape. I often fear Stevie is going to fall over on stage. Miss Deb is markedly thicker than 20 years ago herself, but she just carries herself differently. Even though that face lift was a little tight, she just looks sharp and vigorous.
Stevie is, without a doubt, beautiful. There are moments when she projects the same vibe that she did in her prime. But overall, she has a different aura about her now. It's a calmer, earth mother thing. She seems to have relaxed into it and is evidently comfortable with it. More power to her. All bow before the Queen, LOL. Sex kitten ? Nope. Not in a good twenty years. Who cares ? She was the best of the best when she was that person. Times change. I don't think she has any desire to be that woman anymore. It's a lot of work, I am sure.
As far as Howard Stern goes - of course he talks about her "hot" days. The man is a thirteen year old Id gone mad. That's his schtick. He likes women who are rail thin, with imlants, lip jobs, and not much brains. He knows his audience - typical 18-34 year old straight guys. That's what most of them fantasize about too. It's reality. That's what most guys like.
For the record, I like Howard. I used to listen to him all the time. The way he calls sacred celebrities out on the carpet is a riot. He certainly crosses the line into mean sometimes, but that's what an out of control Id does. I don't listen to him much anymore - the constant fixation Jenna Jameson type bimbos and strippers gets on my nerves. But I appreciate his show. And I think Robin Quivers is fantastic.

Debbie's know to have become quite Zaftig at times, then usually gets surgery....Also, as some reviewer pointed out...Debbie's never really been a good dancer....my point with this being that, I think Stevie wore herself out much more...she was touring before, and after Blondie was, all the time, with her own career and with FMac, always busy, busy....and being a good dancer :p I don't think Debbie's worn down nearly as much. Uhm, it's called "stage makeup." Every broadway actress (and most of the actors!) wears it. As do opera stars.
Most female performers over 40 wear it, too. Tina Turner wears it. Cher wears it. Debbie Harry wears it (it was evident on VH1's Divas special).
Skin becomes more pale as we age, because we have less pigment, and Stevie has a pale complexion to begin with. Combine that with the harsh klieg lights, and all you'd see are eyes and lips.
So she wears the foundation.
When you see her in candid pics, wearing the type of makeup I assume she always wears off-stage, it's not thick or pancaked.

Well I would rather have her wear tennis shoes and have her dance around more then wear platforms and have her just stand at her mic. I'm not looking at her feet anyways!
And I agree Stevie has put on a few pounds- or maybe it is just the insane amount of layers. For all we know she is 90 pounds under all those capes and shawls! From candid photos she looks like she has gained weight since the Dance, but on Live in Boston she looks about the same weight. I think maybe the candid photos are just taken from unflattering angles (looking up).
And I know everyone thinks the Stevie fans are just making excuses- but I really think she is trying to give Lindsey the spotlight this tour. How come on Stand Back she becomes her old thirty-year old energetic self again? I mean you can't just turn it on unless you have it to begin with! So I think she is trying to tone down the twirls so she doesn't steal Lindsey's thunder. That is just my opinion- but I guess we will see the next time she goes on a solo tour.

As Johnny Stew said, I don't agree. What she wears daily is not nearly as heavy as what is required for the filmingof a DVD or even nightly onstage. Stevie has always "let" us see her without makeup anyway in tourbook candids, etc. She has light makeup on throughout much of Destiny Rules and is even completely barefaced during the EFO rehearsal clip. I really don't see evidence of facial plastic surgery...maybe pricey botanical skin treatments or possibly even laser skin resurfacing at some point, but maybe not. Some women her age do just look that good.

Which is good...but also I think Stevie's live performance back in the day absolutely cannot be equaled, so, i kinda don't mind that she wore herself down, it was for a great cause... :) oh, by the way, I love, love, love Debbie...also, isn't Debbie a few years younger?
anywhoo,
Amber
She's always been up-front about her surgery and said that her first time she had work done was after the No Exit tour, and I believe that. I saw her solo in '94, then with the Jazz Passengers in '96, with Blondie in '97, then again with Blondie in '98 (or '99, I forget); she never had surgery during those years. She's also said that she sees nothing wrong with surgery and that if she gets really old and decrepit looking, she'll get surgery to look Chinese, change her identity, and live anonymously. I think it's refreshing for someone to be so honest about surgery.
But, I don't think the surgery is what makes her sexy and hot, it's her youthfulness. Which my dear friend sparky summed up PERFECTLY. An Debbie will be 60 next year. ;) And has toured just as much as La Nicks. ;)

OMG, watch the Destiny Rules DVD closely and you'll see just why she looks so great when it appears that she doesn't have much make-up on. The touch ups and lens filters were not made discreet! Specifically, watch the Goodbye Baby part where she looks stunning and gorgeous.

That's because her make up artist had a bad day. A thicker make-up is quite predictable for a concert filming but if you display it in that way, it would result too evident in the close-ups, and that's what happened.

I disagree - I thought her make up in The Dance was superb. I also think the lighting was INCREDIBLE. I also think they shot her through a special lens - perhaps oil immersed or gauzed if they still use those concepts  I also think there may have been some post production work done to enhance that

They most certainly did use soft lens and post-production and, for some reason, they didn't try to hide it, either. I took a couple film classes a couple years ago and just dissected the whole video one night. And La Nicks was not alone in the touch up area, though she did have the lions share.
I think that pancake make-up can only be called "superb" when there it isn't totally obvious how much someone has on.

The thing about The Dance is the footage is from three different nights and then from close ups shot later. All of the lighting is different - esp. the close ups, where is can be more tightly controlled and done over over over over over and over!!!!!!!! So, I think some of the post production was to correct that, but the lion's share was to make them look better, which is easy when you have pretty people to start with!!!!!
I also love how one second La Nicks is playing a tambourine with black streamers and the next time in the same song and one second later, she has a different one. Also, the long shots are sometimes not even for the song being played

I kind of agree with this. Stevie even in interviews doesn't have that vibrant approach. I remember the Jim Ladd interviews way back and she used to have this great humor. Now it's all PC crap. Stevie and LB seem older to me than even Christine. Maybe because CM called it quits, she got her energy back. But her latest interviews make her sound like she's 40.

I'm at risk of starting an all-out war with this comment... but Stevie said in some interview (I wish I remembered) that 9/11 aged her about ten years.
Not to sound goofy, but I do wonder if the experience of being in New York on that day (albeit, in the relative safety of a luxury hotel room) still weighs on her.
She certainly seemed far more subdued and somber in the various 'SYW' interviews than she had in the 'TISL' interviews.
Or maybe the poor woman is simply tired.

I'm not arguing that her makeup on 'Live In Boston' isn't thick, simply that it's stage makeup, and stage makeup IS thick by design. It's meant to compensate for things such as pale complexions and harsh lighting (and people sitting a few hundred feet from the stage).
As far as post-production touch-ups enhancing her appearance... well, I don't doubt that either. But I also don't think it's as extensive as people make it out to be. More than likely done to even skin-tones, etc.
Anyone who wants to see what the level of re-touches being implied here REALLY looks like, should check out that Michael Jackson tribute concert from a year or two back.
Whitney Houston was re-touched to hide her "skin and bones" appearance, and it SHOWS. Especially around her collar-bone. Even in close-ups, the footage looks smudged.
Obviously they used a less-expensive approach.
The technique of high-quality digital re-touching is ultra-expensive... which is why film studios, etc., avoid it at all costs.
Stevie may be vain like the rest of us, but I just can't imagine her pushing for millions of dollars worth of re-touches... which is what it would cost to extensively re-touch a feature length concert like 'The Dance' or a feature-length documentary like 'Destiny Rules.'

I think she looks great on LIB, and in most of the candid shots people have posted from the shows....for someone who is 56 she looks amazing....as far as the weight goes, the camera adds like what...10 pounds? I don't think she is more than 135 pounds, I think her clothes add the appearance of weight. We all add weight as we age, so why should she be different? Do all of you look perfect? Doubt it.
On someone's recent candid shots there was a spare tire visable on Lindsey....we're talking love handles. Yet no one comments. Why? Not a fair double standard, but highly pervasive in the thought processes of today's society.

Seriously. If that's an example of Stevie looking "bad," then the woman has no worries.
I mean, we're talking about a 56-year old woman wearing very little makeup (with, seemingly, no major plastic surgery)... how is she supposed to look? Like a fresh-scrubbed 18 year old? Talk about unrealistic expectations!
When she's not wearing makeup (such as those "Silent Night" pics), her eyes are very small and her face has little color. Wow... big surprise there!
But we act as if Stevie suddenly becomes Medusa when she's not wearing makeup, and as if it's somehow proof that she no longer looks good when she does.
Isn't the whole point of wearing makeup, to enhance one's beauty and divert attention from one's flaws?
And, when on stage, to combat the harshness of the stage lights, as well as the other factors I've already cited.
I think one can still be a beautiful woman, while also not looking "perfect"... but maybe that's just me.

I'm at risk of starting an all-out war with this comment... but Stevie said in some interview (I wish I remembered) that 9/11 aged her about ten years.Maybe it did. I really loved how youthful & funky she was during the press for "Street Angel." She did a series of interviews on radio (Jim Ladd, WNEW, Museum of TV & Radio, Mark & Brian, etc.) & she was a real pistol. She had it all back for that short time. I guess, as we've learned in retrospect, she wasn't all that pleased with her then-recently finished album, but she was dying to get on the road & was quite the dickens, playing her keyboard & singing along on all these radio shows, joshing around with callers & DJs, etc. I hadn't heard her be quite so fun since 1986.
That was a personality high point for Stevie. Otherwise, she's been fairly morose.

Of course Stevie was gaining in the late 80's.Stevie's weight gain was really weird & abrupt. It happened in 1985. She played the club date with Les Dudek in April or May 1985, & based on the photos looked just great (much like her Wild Heart Tour self), but by the time she played Tom Petty's show in Tempe in July & the benefits in September, she was markedly overweight. The lady next to me at the Los Angeles benefit even said (into my recording equipment): "Didn't she put a little weight on?"
From that point on, she never looked like the girl on the cover of "Bella Donna" again. Although there's another anomaly: the early part of the tour in 1990. How did Stevie look like an aerobics instructor again from the waist down (even if it only lasted for a few months)?

True - but she had a hiatus for awhile while caring for the, I believe, guitar player. AND - if it is worth anything, her later concerts were far smaller than anything Stevie just about ever did. I can remember in like 1982 or 83 for the Island of Lost Souls (ONE OF MY FAV.'S) tour came to Baton Rouge, LA and the place was pretty much empty or at least it seemed that way because sections had no one in them. Everybody was high in those days. A big CD-R compilation of all the Jim Ladd interviews would be a cool idea. As far as I know, Stevie did the following:
1976 with Fleetwood Mac
1979 alone (Fleetwood Mac two-parter)
1981 alone
1982 with Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac two-parter)
1983 alone (solo two-parter)
1985 phone call to Phoenix
1986 alone
1994 alone
1998 alone (with two rehearsal songs)
I was the one who taped both the '83 "Afterview" thing & the '85 phone call for fans' collections. Any more Jim Ladd on-air stuff?
David,
I remember one where he was on her couch and Lori and Sharon were there with her. The were trying to speak French, i.e. enchanted. I was really young at the time.

BUT - La Harry and crewe gave a GREAT show despite it!!!!!!!
I didn't know that we were discussing tour attendance. I don't think the size of the venue has much to do with how much someone tours and long they do it for.
As for the hiatus, it was three years. ;) No longer than Stevie's between Timespace and Street Angel. Or Street Angel and The Dance.
On another note - I have been listening to War Child all week; I can't get enough of it. SUCH a fantastic song.

Stevie's weight gain was really weird & abrupt.
I always kind of think of this as - A)She's almost 40 and B)Most people bloat up like the Dickens when they quit coke....

Some say it was scrapped because she felt she looked fat. Others say it was scrapped because the record company plain didn't like it, and wanted a dance-oriented video for a dance-oriented song.

Either way, scrapping a video that cost a few thousand dollars is a little different than demanding extensive digital re-touching, which would cost millions.

Stevie: Alright, but I'm making the videos too now, which is something I don't like to do…

Stevie: Right, and then of course in complete confidence over international Australian TV I should tell you about the first "Stand Back" which I did my own horseback riding [laughs] and was like, you know, incredible to a point, but it wasn't right, and I freaked out and I said Fleetwood Mac didn't have to make videos to sell records so at this point I said take it back. I hardly think that the Civil War version of Stand Back cost "a few thousand dollars." Who knows why it was scrapped and I could care less because I didn't like it anyways, the point Amber was trying to make (if I read her correctly) was that she had no qualms about reshooting an entire music video, so she probably would have no qualms about requesting digital re-touching.
No one has said that "extensive digital re-touching" occurred, just that some was. And it does NOT cost millions to do most re-touching. It did in the dark ages of cinema computer technology, not so today.

Yeah, Christopher, it's a good thing that she did more drugs than Stevie.
No, the point being made was that Stevie is not the only woman in rock with a lot of miles on her. There are others who did just as much drugs, toured just as much, "danced as much," and recorded just as much with abundant amounts of energy and who don't hobble across the stage.
If you ask me, I think the reason Stevie is so dull lately is because of menopause. I can't imagine how excruciating an experience like that is to begin with, but it must be ten times as aggravating going through it on the road. Hot flashes and "Stand Back" moves do not mix.

If I recall correctly, I think the scrapped video cost 65 grand. Not a lot of money today, but 20 years ago it was a high price for a video. It was a goofy video anyway. It is interesting as a historical artifact, but it was completely wrong for the song. The reshot one was much more fitting. And certainly has camp value as well. Those Flashback dancers ! The treadmill ! Priceless. I love it.
Digital retouching isn't all that expensive, unless you are inserting CG shots, and the like. They basically do it with something like a photoshop program. It isn't cheap, but it isn't millions, no. It's gotten much more reasonable, and it's not like they got an entire hour of footage retouched. Probably 15 -18 minutes total. I'd eyeball that cost at 20k, maybe. Pocket change, even if it came out Stevie's own velvet purse.

It is also fitting to point out, I think, that video was in its late infancy then. Many bands, as evidenced by La Nicks' comments as well as other comments she hmade in that interview that are not in the pront article, felt that video was "beneath" them - but they realized its power at the same time. Many bands also did live concert shoots as their video a la Sara, etc. (although those were right before the video revolution). The "concept" video, a la Hold Me, Gypsy, etc., was considered a new being on its own and was still being, if you will, fleshed out AND Stevie probably went through several story boards until she found one that worked and then did not like the end result, which could have been due to editing, the way she looked, theme, etc.
Interestingly and since Mirage, FM has done both themeatic and concept since video came out.

Perhaps. But there's still the EFO part...she clearly has no makeup on and I don't see any evidence of tricky lenses there. And, again, back to the fact that she's always shown her barefaced self through the years in tourbook candids. Yes, we have all seen other candids of her without makeup, but these are ones that she obviously knew we would see. It's just not a big deal that different "levels" of makeup are required for different situations. Sure, she might be more vain about her makeup in certain situations, but she's entitled to and it's not like she's so rediculously vain that she absolutely won't be seen without it. (I pay close attention to these things and admire those who are regarded as "beautiful" and let people see reality, because I only have about 2 vain bones in my body and extreme vanity can get on my nerves easily.:))

I just have to say that I think Stevie looks great for her age and what she has been through. If I can look half that decent at her age then I will be very happy. She has that something about her that she can light up a room with a smile. She is beautiful with or without makeup. She also looks way thinner without those gawdy dresses on. In the Destiny Rules video you can tell she isnt heavy at all but when you see her on stage she has so many layers on that it adds weight. She could be a size 2 or a size 22 and she still would be hot to me. I also have to say that I think Debbie Harry looks terrible. I dont think she has aged nearly as well as Stevie. I dont know what it is but she scares me to see her now.

I don't know exactly when the Dazzle Dancers concert happened, but she's clearly bigger than Stevie in those pictures . . . and she's not under layers of clothing.
Bigger than Stevie?! I don't like to really talk about the weight of either woman because I find it tacky, but c'mon. Stevie looks like she had the backside of a Mack truck blasted onto her ass. Debbie is no skinny mini, but she's certainly lost a lot of weight in recent years and is looking more slimmer than Miss Nicks. A&E had an episode of Biography for her last month and from the live footage they aired, Deb can pull off wearing only bloomers onstage even at 59. Unfortunately, she only wore a tight skirt at my last concert.
The thing is, everyone takes bad pictures sometimes. Especially when the camera is at your feet, pointed up.
Of course, I agree. But as I said earlier in this thread, don't show me photos of someone with four inches of pancake mix on their face and tell me how "hot" they are. (Note: I'm not saying you did this, I'm just making a statement. )

Sorry Heyjupiter, what kind of concert was that exactly? Just curious ;) .
By the way, I think Stevie is a very beautiful, talented and intelligent woman with a lot of class and a great spirit , a mixture that is extremely rare at every age. In my opinion she should stop worrying so much to disappoint her fans and feel free to write, sing, eat and wear everything she likes.

And someone said that Stevie needed to lose 30 pounds (!!) but in reference to Debbie, said that she'd merely "thickened up."
That would be ME who said that about the 30 pounds. It was in response to Christopher's question asking about what was making Stevie look matronly.
I haven't gotten her on a scale, but I can see that the much ballyhooed "thirty pounds" she talked about losing in The Dance era are mostly back home to roost. And as I said earlier - So What ? Being more than 5 or 10 pounds over one's ideal body weight tends to make anyone look a little dumpy. And clothes can add to the effect, as can the way one carries the weight. I knew merely mentioning the fact would rile the hell out of some people. But, Christopher asked, I answered.
That would also be me who said "thickened up" about DH. I am not a big follower of DH, but in my limited exposure to her lately, I noticed she had gained some weight. Also a fact. I think thickened up is fairly polite, no ? It's not like a said she was a fat sow. Then again, I wouldn't say that about Stevie either.
Please. I don't know exactly when the Dazzle Dancers concert happened, but she's clearly bigger than Stevie in those pictures . . . and she's not under layers of clothing. :shrug
Considering this all started out from Christopher's question, and then morphed into a comparison of the relative "hot" factor of these two women, people are bound to differ. I guess "bigger" is subjective and will differ too. It isn't about bigger though. It's about the vibe someone sends off. On the SA tour, I couldn't see WHAT the hell was going on under Stevie's smocks, but she was commanding, vibrant, and on some nights, a ball of fire. I have seen Ann Wilson kick serious butt when her butt was as big as a Mini Cooper. It's really about attitude. And the right attitude can make an audience not even notice how big your ass is. Maybe even ignore your schlumpy shoes.

My "millions" comment was an inflated estimate, I admit, but I know for a fact that it's still considered expensive enough that most filmmakers and studios try their absolute best to avoid it.
15-18 minutes of re-touching, at approximately 20K is one thing. But 65-85 minutes of re-touching, and you're looking at quite a large sum.
At any rate, I'm not saying it wasn't done at all. I just don't concur with the degree to which it's assumed it was done.
And I still insist that, in the video footage from local concerts shown on various TV stations throughout the US, Stevie looked even better than she did on 'The Dance.'
Same with their appearances on the Grammys and Letterman.
I highly doubt any of those were re-touched. And if they are able to re-touch a live broadcast as it's airing (the Grammys), thenI'm mighty impressed. ;) :)

Inflated? Try ridiculous, Le Stew. ;) If you can name a filmed concert or movie in the past ten years that has had "millions" of "extensive" retouching done to the singer or actor in order to freshen them up, I'll eat my socks. And even at an hour and a half, you still won't be paying millions.
No one said that she had an extreme amount of retouching done. I know that I said there was a lot of reotuching done on The Dance, but I certainly don't believe she had the exorbitant amount done that you seem to think I do. The majority of it was soft lenses.

I agree.
However... I still disagree with the opinion that Stevie isn't "sexy" anymore.
I think her demeanor and attitude ARE sexy.
The way she dresses is matronly, most definitely... but her movements are still graceful and commanding. She remains a captivating performer, even when she's not doing her little "Gold And Braid" boogie-dance, or thrashing her head up and down ala the 'Red Rocks' "Stand Back."
Her whole vibe is sexy to me.
Debbie is not someone I've ever been fond of on stage. I like her music, but she's never captivated me as a live performer.
In the early days, she just stood there, expressionless. No gestures. Nothing.
Thankfully she moves around these days, but she still seems awkward and lumbering to me. And it has nothing to do with her weight.
In photographs, she can be sexy... but on stage, she does nothing for me.
Now, Ann Wilson is a VERY different story. That woman puts out so much energy, it's mind-blowing. She moves with grace AND energy.
(Oh, and unfortunately the right attitude doesn't "make an audience not even notice how big your ass is"... otherwise so much would never have been made about Ann Wilson's weight or Stevie's in 1994. :distress: )

I agree that Stevie could lose some weight, but 30 pounds? On someone her height, 10-15 pounds would make a huge difference. Wasn't she at 170 before she lost weight? There's no way she's even close to that these days, IMO.

I wasn't saying that it was rude. Yes, it's fairly polite, as comments about a woman's weight go. And I agree with the statement. I was just pointing out what I thought was a discrepancy in the way people were comparing Stevie to Debbie. That's all. :)

My whole thing with Stevie is that I never really found her "sexy" to begin with, so the matronly garb hasn't done much to help. Beautiful, yes, but the vibe she gave off was never anything that I found sexy. It's too serious for me to get hot over. There have been moments where she's been quite sexy (Gold Dust Woman from the Dance, for example), but she has always come across as too demure and innocent, too doe-eyed and needy. I don't think her songs do much to help her seem any sexier; they project a very mythical aura that enrapture you so much in their messages that you don't really have enough room to think about her in a sexual way.
Sexy, to me, is playfulness, humor, and youthfulness. I think Stevie said it best in Silver Girl (bite me, I love that song) when she sang "Insane far beyond her years." I think that speaks about Stevie over the years; she was too wise and grown-up for her own good at times and, IMO, it made her seem much older than she really was. These days, even though she doesn't look 58 years of age, she projects that age in her actions, music, and appearance.

I hate to disagree again, but I must. She's always been a ball of energy who leaps across the stage, I don't know what you've seen. Clumsy at times, but that was part of the ditzy blonde character she played. One of my favorite clips is from Blondie's CBGB days where they were playing "Rip Her To Shreds." I thought she was having a seizure. And then the whole bit with biting off the heads of roses and spewing the petals into the crowd; that was soooooooo sexy to me. She oozed sexuality without hardly ever showing any skin. If you went back through all the old photos, she never showed lots of cleavage or shoulder or leg. She had an innocence to her, but it was a youthful innocence, not the chaste image that Stevie has projected for thirty years.
(Oh, and unfortunately the right attitude doesn't "make an audience not even notice how big your ass is"... otherwise so much would never have been made about Ann Wilson's weight or Stevie's in 1994. :distress: )

Hmm...maybe yes, maybe no. I think during the era that both of them were dissed so much, they both sometimes seemed to be extremely self conscious in their movements. Ann had herself so corseted up in the late 80's and early 90's she could scarcely move, and was so big that her movement WAS constricted. Ditto Stevie, at certain times. Ann is still no skinny minnie after losing a bunch of weight, but after about a minute when I saw her last, I was so damned caught up in her energy, I didn't think about it. But then again, I wasn't checking her out sexually either.

Wow, I exactly opposite disagree with you. I think Stevie is incredibly sexy, in fact i often think "how could one performer be so sexy and talented?" when i watch some of her videos. And I don't think she looks doe eyed or needy at all, I think she looks very intense and passionate. veeery intense...
And the few live performances i've seen of Debbie, she was ok, but she didn't project her performance that well (perhaps, also, she didn't have as good a cameraman as stevie always has :D ) even though the performance was pretty good. Also, she didn't dance or move that well on stage - some were better than others...And although Debbie is the most gorgeous woman ever, I didn't think in her live performaces or videos that she was as sexy as Stevie. Gorgeous, but not as sexy. And her eyes are more blank, they don't project as much passion and intensity as Stevie's...
IMO.... :wavey:

We most definitely have two very different ideas of "sexy."
I think true sexiness doesn't hit you over the head. It's not in-your-face or aggressive.
True sexiness is exuded by someone who's graceful and classy.
Veronica Lake was sexier than Mae West ever was.
Jaclyn Smith was sexier than Farrah Fawcett, Cheryl Ladd and Tanya Roberts combined.
A truly sexy person can melt you with a shy smile, or the way they casually run their fingers through their hair.
Truly sexy people don't know they are, and they certainly don't act as if they know they are.
I respond to humour, too, and playfulness. But I see that in Stevie as well.
Not so much when she's on-stage, but she's typically very funny in interviews, and, depending on who's interviewing her, she can be quite playful.
Biting the heads off of roses and spitting them at the audience might be bold and funny, but it's not what I'd call "sexy."
(As for my opinion of Debbie's onstage demeanor... I don't know what the footage was from. But I've seen several clips of her over the years... in one I believe she's wearing a black dress... and she just STANDS there. The music is pulsating and alive, and she's not moving an inch. You know, I got out some old videos last night and had a mini Stevie Festival, as I used to call them back in the day.
I watched the US Festival, and the Solid Gold/SNL performances. My conclusion ? Stand Back is a world better than it ever was back then. I don't think it's that people aren't willing to "open their eyes" and admit she's changed. Not at all.
I just think some people are more willing to accept the change in Stevie's onstage demeanor.

As I've said countless times, I definitely miss the days when she would "rock out" and act like a wild woman.
But that was then, and this is now.
Things change. So why bother trying to hold onto something and wanting it to always be the same?
Stevie's not the same as she was 10-20 years ago. And she's not Tina Turner, or Ann Wilson, or Cher, etc., etc., etc.
So why waste time wanting her to be?
Stevie's matured... I, for one, happen to like the maturity. I like the "Earth Mother" vibe she projects. It's real and it reflects who she is today.
She seems to be in a better emotional place, and she doesn't have as much to prove to herself or to her male peers, as she did in the '70s and '80s.
I don't expect everyone to feel the same way I feel. I guess I just honestly don't understand why it's such a big deal.

I agree. Which is what I think Deborah Harry did. She wasn't in your face, she didn't show off her breasts or make suggestive gestures, she used her innocence in order to come across as sexy. Which she masterfully did, in my opinion. Stevie is too lost in her own little world to ever be sexy.

Not so much when she's on-stage, but she's typically very funny in interviews, and, depending on who's interviewing her, she can be quite playful.
I don't, I see a morose being who smiles only when necessary. In my opinion, she lost her playfulness and humor in interviews years ago. Now, she simply goes through the motions to promote her current project.
Biting the heads off of roses and spitting them at the audience might be bold and funny, but it's not what I'd call "sexy."
That's the difference between you and I, I guess. :D
(As for my opinion of Debbie's onstage demeanor... I don't know what the footage was from. But I've seen several clips of her over the years... in one I believe she's wearing a black dress... and she just STANDS there. The music is pulsating and alive, and she's not moving an inch. I was bored looking at her. This was around 1981. )
Beats me, I've never seen such footage.

I don't what it was from, but apparently sparky has seen it too, since he felt she was doing a whole "Warhol-boredom" thing in it.
As for Stevie being "morose" and "only smiling when necessary"... huh?
She was the funniest thing about 'Destiny Rules' (and not in an unintentional/embarrassing kind of way), and she seems so friendly and funny with the likes of Letterman, Rosie O'Donnell, Leno, Mark & Brian, etc.
It doesn't seem forced, or put on to promote an album.
Can anyone really smile and laugh 100% of the time? I don't think so.
We all have to be serious once in a while (and this coming from the guy who's always trying to get his father to lighten up!).

I can still tell you which women are "hot" and which women are "sexy."
They just don't "do it" for me in other ways. ;)
Okay. I, for one, tend to question my own assessment of the relative attractiveness of women. I think my opinion is aesthetic, and not based on a visceral, animal reaction. It is a different thing than what a straight guy thinks. I mean, I wouldn't, under anything but extreme circumstances, do anything about it.

I'm an artist, so I definitely respond to things that are aesthetically pleasing in photographs, paintings, etc. So I think I have a pretty good gauge of what's "sexy" on that level.
Now when it comes to relationships, there has to be MUCH more than a "pretty face."
In fact, a "pretty face" is pretty far down on the list of requirements.
And, of course, being a gay man, I don't respond to women the exact same way a straight man would or does.
When I was a kid, I thought Princess Leia looked so cool in her slave outfit from 'Return Of The Jedi'... my brother, however, considers seeing her in that outfit as the defining moment of his puberty.
I still find certain women "hot" though, despite a lack of interest in them romantically.
I'd say that maybe I'm just an oddball... but I think that's a "given thing"!

Lindsey is the one who really came across as the happy-go-lucky individual, which wasn't always how I perceived him before. I think she's a happy person, but she isn't what I would call having a sunny disposition as of late. A lot of her playfulness seems to have really diminished in recent years. Disagree, fine, lord knows I have disagreed with your perception of Debbie. But that's my perception of Stevie, unfortunately.

It didn't ten years ago. Ten years ago, she came across as a chick you just wanted to have a beer with. Now, she seems too reserved most times.

Well, I make my living as something of an artist, if you call TV and Film an art, LOL. So I certainly respond that way too. But I would put the response sexy in quotes as well.

She sure didn't seem reserved in last year's radio interview with Mark & Brian!
Stevie was absolutely the best thing about that interview... she was chatty, she was funny, she was self-deprecating ("I don't know how to burn CDs, but I can make you a cassette!").
She seemed to be having a great old time, and demonstrated a better overall sense of humour that her bandmates. Same with the 'Destiny Rules' doc.
I wouldn't say she has a "sunny disposition." I wouldn't say that about ANYONE in Fleetwood Mac.
But she sure strikes me as having a great sense of humour... even these days.

I saw her in July from about 5 feet away and she is really jaw dropping in my opinion.
yes but being beautiful and being "hot" are two different things. stevie still may be beautiful....aged gracefully...what have you....but she's not hot.

Uh, has anyone noticed Lindsey's pancake make-up? I swear he was wearing quite a bit of base make-up when I saw them this summer, I noticed it when I inched my way up to the stage and I KNOW he was wearing something on his face!

Now, Ann Wilson is a VERY different story. That woman puts out so much energy, it's mind-blowing. She moves with grace AND energy.
Have you seen them on tour this summer for Jupiter's Darling? Both Ann and Nancy look stellar. One of my male friends that went with me fell in love with Nancy by the concert's end...he's 26 and she's in her fifties! In other words, they are both still very enchanting for women their age, and it doesn't hurt that they're so damned talented! I got a good close-up look at Ann---the woman's skin is amazing (even under all the pancake make-up I'm sure!) she looked great even after all the sweating and dancing, etc. I wonder if she's had any work done...

I've only seen one or 2 clips of them performing, but it was like a hurricane force wind with fire in it, it was so awesome (early days) makes me really want to see those old performances of the songs i love anyways. Super-forceful. To me, Stevie is (conversely, but similarly) more of strong, gusty, erratic wind, with fire shooting just out of her eyes....uh, to compare two forces of nature... :p

Singing in something other than her lowest register would make a HUGE difference.
Do we all have to get into the voice preservation argument again?! Stevie can still sing in other registers  , but I think it's obvious she has to take great care in not shredding her voice like she used to. I don't think it's hard to understand that she has to make it a priority (and I imagine it must be frustrating to her as well)...singing is her life and she can carry on in a little different way or she can quit. This is also someone who would, I'm sure, find it devastating to lose her voice permenently even if she retired from the stage...she loves to sing at home too! I realize the remedy is too much for some of you to take, but I think she's done a good job of coming up with creative new stylings in the lower register for many of her songs (Rhiannon, GDW ending, etc.)
Some songs that were recorded in a higher key just cannot be sung night after night without taking their toll on the singer. "Come" is another example. I love the rehearsal segment in Destiny Rules where Lindsey jokes about keeping it in the original key and interjecting lip synched bits where he cannot reach the notes.

I believe he was referring to World Turning. And "I", gotta get my feet back on the ground", the "I" being the sampled part. It's a high C.

No, he was referring to COME during the World Turning rehearsal. He suggested to sample the " and NO-body else is doing it " part. The " NO " in particular. Very funny. He rocks out the intro-lyric of world turning in that rehearsal like a madman, by the way. He cooled it down in concert though. Unfortunately.

Gail
This had me cracking up, too funny! I once heard Howard say that Stevie was big but she knew how to dress for her figure so he'd still bang her. This was back in the Dance days.
I was anti-Howard for a long time until I heard that he was speaking out about Bush and then I started tuning in again. If I don't like a topic I just turn it off. Usually it just cracks me up but some things are just too much.

Stevie has said that when in Betty Ford they fed her HUGE portions. So this is probably where it started, trading one addiction for another. She also has said she had a habit of eating really rich midnight snacks.
The first time I saw her after she lost weight was at MixFest in Boston and it was so exciting because I just knew she was "back". She was so much happier up there than she had been during the SA tour.
I agree with the "Stevie's hot" crew, she's hot!

There have been moments where she's been quite sexy (Gold Dust Woman from the Dance, for example), but she has always come across as too demure and innocent, too doe-eyed and needy.
Forgive me, but...PUKE! I don't see Stevie as ever having been "needy" whatsoever! In fact, I think it's obvious that she had to be one tough broad to claim her stake in rock 'n' roll. Just becasue she never felt the need to put down her male peers to gain "female power" in music does not make her needy. I think it's great that she just openly admires the talents of others, regardless of gender. I sort of get where you were going with this, but for me none of the words you used hit the mark. I think it's more that Stevie was always unihibited about showing her vulnerability (which every human has and tends to guard) and displaying it in her lyrics and performance. If I was forced to name one thing that most captivates me about Stevie, that would probably be it. It was definitely a key element that sucked me in in the beginning...I had previously never encountered such a thing.

That is the thing, isn't it? She's at once strong and vulnerable. Which has always been a compelling combination to me, too.
With most artists, you usually get one or the other. They either exhibit little strength or little vulnerability.
To me, Stevie's always seemed tough-as-nails when she needs to be, and yet never afraid to be vulnerable and fragile at other times.
In other words, despite all the trappings of money and fame, she manages to come across in a very human way. And her ability to be more than just a one-sided rock icon, adds to her sex-appeal. At least in my opinion. :)

Once again, taking my comments and twisting them so much that I don't even want to bother commenting on the majority of it.
You can puke all you want, but one look at her lyrics and it becomes painfully obvious. It became more and more apparent as the years wore on. I think there was a great shift in her persona where she went from being this feminine-yet-strong woman to being this innocent, inverted woman, almost childlike. There's nothing wrong with it, but it certainly doesn't make her sexy in my book. I think she's brave for putting out such personal songs, but that's the extent of it.
