I've been toying with the idea of making a few mix cd's. After checking with some friends a mix of sad songs won out, just barely over 80s party music. I've been making a few lists and thought I would ask for some imput. I'm trying to not have any band overrepresented. Here's what I've got so far?

"Pretty Good Year" - Tori Amos
"HAEWAFY" - Stevie
"Storms" - FMac
"Adam's Song" - Blink 182
"I will Remember You" - Sarah McLachlan
"Mad World" - Gary Jules
"Name" - Goo Goo Dolls
"River" - Joni Mitchell
"Grieve" - Peter Gabriel
"Why" - Annie Lennox
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Tori Amos
"Hurt" - Johnny Cash

So, what are some of your favorite songs? Any suggestions would be appreciated and although I haven't started the 80's mix, feel free to comment on that if you'd like. Any and all suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks

Michael

EDIT: recieved a couple suggestions already! FMac - "Why" and James Taylor - "Fire and Rain" added.

One of my most favorite sad songs is "Wildfire" by Michael Martin Murphy. I just love this song but everytime I hear it I get a lump in my throat and tear up. Beautiful.

ISlip-Away-David Bowie

Chant of the Ever-Circling Skeletal Family is something else. That one is unbelievably weird and depressing.

I think all Aimee Mann songs would fit into the "Saddest Songs" category. Especially her songs for Magnolia.

Agreed!

She could be singing about bunnies and Happy Meal toys and fuzzy slippers and it would still sound sad. I love her.

Did you pick up the limited edition of Lost In Space? It's the next best thing to a new album because it has an extra disc of live songs, b-sides, and unreleased tracks. Truly fantastic set, IMO.

Probably one of the single saddest songs ever commited to tape... Fleetwood Mac's "Man Of The World."

Breaks my heart every time I hear it. (Which must make me a masochist, I guess, because I love that song and listen to it often!)

I did, it's great! She's done amazing things as a businesswoman, too, in the industry, and I give her major props for that.

I second JStew on "Man of the World"- it's a heartbreaking song.

I Will Remember You - Amy Grant

I will be walking one day
Down a street far away
And see a face in the crowd and smile
Knowing how you made me laugh
Hearing sweet echoes of you from the past
I will remember you.

Look into my eyes while you're near
Tell me what's happening here
See that I don't want to say good-bye
Our love is frozen in time
I'll be your champion and you will be mine
I will remember you.

Later on
When this fire is an ember
Later on
When the nights not so tender
Given time
Though it's hard to remember darlin'
I will be holding
I'll still be holding to you
I will remember you.

So many years come and gone
And yet the memory is strong
One word we never could learn
Good-bye
True love is frozen in time
I'll be your champion and you will be mine
I will remember you
So please remember
I will remember you
I will remember you
I will remember you
I will remember you

Hello Goodbye by Michael W. Smith (song about the death of a child :( )

Where's the navigator of your destiny
Where is the dealer of this hand
Who can explain
Life and its brevity
'Cause there is nothing here
That I can understand
You and I
Have barely met
And I just don't want to let go of you yet

Chorus:
Noah, hello, good-bye
I'll see you on the other side
Noah, sweet child of mine
I'll see you on the other side

And so I hold your tiny hand in mine
For the hardest thing I've ever had to face
Heaven calls for you
Before it calls for me
When you get there save me a place
A place where I can share your smile
And I can hold you for more than just awhile

A friend of mine once commented that any Sarah MacLachlan album should be renamed to "Songs to kill yourself by". He's kind of right. I love her but she's not the most upbeat of artist's!

Ooooh, cool topic.

My choices are:

Belladonna, OTR, HSML, and Beauty and the Beast: (the tragedy just under the surface kills me.) There are tears under the triumph.

IKINW, SMAP, WATL, and TSYHA: (reasons--see above)

"Storms": (God, this song was painful to hear the first time through. I teared up, it is SOOOO emotional.)

"Beautiful Child"--The line, "...even if I never hold you...again" always gets me.

"Songbird"

And the Non-F.M. choices:

"Heart Like a Wheel": Linda Ronstadt

"I Believe in You", and "Birds": Neil Young

"The Loneliest Guy," "Rock and Roll Suicide", and "Five Years": David Bowie

Most things by Cat Power

"Blue," "Let the Wind Carry Me," and "Down to You": Joni Mitchell

"Wise Up": Aimee Mann

"Lonely Sinking Feeling", "Bea's Song (River Song Trilogy: Part II)," and "I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry": Cowboy Junkies

"All I Left Behind," and "Red Dirt Girl": Emmylou Harris

"Alone": Heart

"Sad Lisa" and "Wild World": Cat Stevens

"Kathy's Song": Simon and Garfunkle

"Suzanne": Judy Collins' version

"Two Women": The Angels of Light

All of Bruce Springsteen's album "Nebraska"

I think this list could go on and on which makes me realize that I mainly like sad songs! This is depressing...

Kathy Matea - Where've you Been? -- Such a sad song - about the couple and one ends up with alzheimer's or something...so sad.

Madonna - Take a Bow, This Used to by my Playground

Carole King - Now and Forever (hmm...also from A League of Their Own)

From Hedwig and the Angry Inch - Origin of Love

Madonna - Take a Bow,

These 2 songs, plus "Wild World" by Cat Stevens, remind me of 3 ex-girlfriends, and REALLY get to me every single time I hear them, because I (masochistically, in retrospect!) listened to them non-stop when each relationship ended. Just even thinking about how any of these 3 songs sound makes me feel like someone's punched me in the stomach.

"Johnny's life passed him by like a warm summer day..." and "a bottle of whiskey, sleeping tablets by his bed" (not exact?)
