Has anyone seen either of these? They are about to come out here and I am looking forward to them both :)

Haven't been to the movies since Shrek 2.

Is Open Water worth seeing? I saw some good reviews, others not so good. Did anyone see Supersize Me? I'm pretty sure I'll check it out but thought I'd ask for opinions :)

I LOVED Open Water, but if you didnt like Blair Witch, dont go see it. Its a great movie, and the fact that they used real sharks makes it even scarier!

Super Size Me is a hard one to pick on to different levels, being content and narrative based...
Great analysis. You definitely hit the nail on the head, so to speak.

I really appreciated Super Size Me and couldn’t believe what the filmmaker (Morgan Spurlock) endured in order to make the film. I mean, I used to get McDonald’s every once in a while (ironically almost exclusively on my way to work at the dance studio) and once I saw the film I was no longer able to stomach their stuff – no pun intended.

I would recommend the film to just about anyone who has ever eaten at McDonald’s. A word of advice though – don’t buy popcorn or other snacks, you won’t feel like eating them. ;)

Why? I eat at McDonalds every once in a great while...why? Because I like it and I know it's bad for me -therefore I use this thing called common sense and I don't eat there every damn day!

The problem I have with SuperSize me is that. OF COURSE you'll have negative health effects from eating something that bad every single day several times a day - BUT why target McDonalds? (I'm assuming because it seems to be the biggest fast food chain?) BUT you would have received the same bad health effects from doing that at any of the other top fast food chains....

I just don't get all the hype...this guy chose to make a completely stupid life choice -and film it- but ya know I was three when I learned that one should not eat that crap every day!

The film did not make me never want to eat at McDonalds again - really it didn't do a whole lot for me...

Just my little rant for the day :)

ITA - I mean no one wants any responsibility for anything they do - EVER. For like the last ten years, every McDonald's I have been in has this HUGE nutritional chart posted and they hand them out in a pamphlet if you ask them for. I think the idea that anyone who thinks that eating fried food everyday is a great thing and that it will make them fat is not telling the truth - period. Moreover, McDonald's has healthy salads on the menu and has for some time and no one makes you order the fries!!

Sorry for the rant

BUT why target McDonalds?

Because it's the worst one out there, according to their own nutritional information, AND because it's the most popular.

The point of the movie was to put a face on the saturated fats and chemicals you're putting into your body. Do you really think that the majority of parents who work until five, have no time to shop and cook, and pick up their kids at soccer practice at six really put a great deal of thought into what their kids are having for dinner when they order a happy meal? I don't think so.

The majority of people do not eat McDonalds three times a day for a month, that's obvious. But look at all the other kinds of junk people eat, then couple it with McDonalds once or twice a week, multiply it with hardly any exercise, and then look at obesity statistics. It's scary and the fact that people willingly put that **** into their bodies speaks volumes.

JMO, though. :o

Their fries are made even more toxic when you consider the fact that they aren't fired in vegetable or corn oil, they're fried in liquified animal fat. ;)

Pleease!! They are not worse than any other fast food chain - just off the top of my head Burger King's Whoppe (WITHOUT cheese or mayo) has 40 grams of fat!! That's obsene....all fast food is bad period...

I STILL think it's unfair to target one place - no *some* busy people don't pay attention to what they and they're kids are eating - that's THEIR fault - NOT the food places....

My mom worked and was single mom - but she taught me well and early - so when she didn't make it home to cook - guess what I did! It's not McDonalds or Burger King's fault that people are too lazy or stupid to teach themselves or their kids proper nutrition...

Aren't the nutritional charts and such a result of the film?

No - they've had nutrition charts in McDonalds for years now - also they have little pocket take home nutrition charts - for someone to claim ignorance as to what they're eating is plain stupidity or laziness...

That is why they are fab.!!!!!!!

Also, animal fat in moderation is not that bad of a thing and can even be healthy, at least according to Dr. Atkins and Julia Child (RIP)!!!!

Of course it's all bad, but McDonalds is the worst.

I agree to an extent, but I think it's much more complicated than that. It has a lot to do with marketing, public acceptance, and attitudes in general towards fast food over the past twenty years. Do you not remember the recent KFC commercials that claimed that their fried chicken was HEALTHY for you?

My mom worked and was single mom - but she taught me well and early - so when she didn't make it home to cook - guess what I did! It's not McDonalds or Burger King's fault that people are too lazy or stupid to teach themselves or their kids proper nutrition...

Yeah, and that was quite a few years ago, eh? Surely you wouldn't claim that the kids of today are as self-reliant and mature as those of yesteryear. And it has nothing to do with teaching kids proper nutrition. Health classes are more prevalent today than they were five years ago, as are criticisms by public health officials, yet obesity levels are at an all-time high and fast food restaurants are doing record-breaking business.

So then what do you attribute the decrease in healthiness?

It was a few years ago that I was at home with my mom - but there are still families who operate the same way we did....I still don't see that McDonalds is to blame for any of this...

And why are they alone the worst? - I am seriously asking because in my mind they're all the same...so I'm curious as to why Mc's is seen as the worst.

I know in my area (well my old are - in NM) obesity was also largely related to poverty...strange but true...high-fat unhealthy food is cheap - true in stores as well as fast food places...so you'd have all these people in economically depressed areas -and they're becoming HUGE!

I don't get it - I'll bring in my own circumstance again - when my mom divorced - I was 7, my sister 17 and my mom was left with both of us - she only made $9,000 a year....now that's poor folks - but still we maintained our health...and I don't know...there is definitely a problem today - I just don't think targeting McDonalds in particular is going to do anything....am I missing the point here?

So then what do you attribute the decrease in healthiness?

Like I said, a variety of things. Marketing, laziness, convenience, lack of exercise. I think that the increase in health awareness over the past few years has been a day late and a dollar short. Fast food has become a staple in our culture and it will take a lot to downsize interest in it. You should read "Fast Food Nation," it's a great book.

It was a few years ago that I was at home with my mom - but there are still families who operate the same way we did....I still don't see that McDonalds is to blame for any of this...

You don't see that the majority of the people in our country are obese? That's pretty hard to miss. I'm not applying McDonalds to every case, but in the whole spectrum of it all, it and other like it are a big part of the problem. It's like cocaine; if it wasn't so readily available, there wouldn't be so many addicts. With fast food, if it wasn't such a staple in the American diet, there would be fewer obese people.

And why are they alone the worst? - I am seriously asking because in my mind they're all the same...so I'm curious as to why Mc's is seen as the worst.

There are many health studies out there that look at McDonalds food. Their food has higher fat content than other fast food companies like Booger King and Wendy's. Their marketing strategies are the most cunning, too.

I know in my area (well my old are - in NM) obesity was also largely related to poverty...strange but true...high-fat unhealthy food is cheap - true in stores as well as fast food places...so you'd have all these people in economically depressed areas -and they're becoming HUGE!

Exactly. A lot of people look at a pound of hamburger, see that it's $3, figure that they'll have to buy cheese and buns and ketchup, etc. Are they going to spend all that money or are they going to go to McDonalds and get a double cheesburger for a buck? A lot of poor people out there simply do not do well with money and will go for what they think is cheapest, but which is most expensive in the long run.

I don't think that you can use one set of circumstances as a barometer for everyone else out there, though. If the majority of people out there were like your family growing up, we wouldn't have such an epidemic. But people just don't care these days. They don't exercise, they don't pay attention, they go for the quickest fix, etc.

My mom worked and was single mom - but she taught me well and early - so when she didn't make it home to cook - guess what I did! It's not McDonalds or Burger King's fault that people are too lazy or stupid to teach themselves or their kids proper nutrition...
While i don't think it's bad to call out fast food places, because a lot of people i see really don't seem to be educated enough about nutrition, or much else, and also don't seem to have the time (?) or inclination to care that their kids are obviously obese, and/or that essentially they are feeding their kids poison, I also agree that they may be lazy/stupid. My best friend is very well educated, has 3 kids, is a super super mom, and teaches ESL first grade and kinder. But I can't believe the crappy diet her kids have had, starting worst with the oldest. It makes it worse that she doesn't like fish or nuts, but anyways...I can't believe this horrible lapse in her judgement, she tries to do everything the best for her kids, except she poisons them daily...
When I was little, it was as simple as: My mom wouldn't really let me eat that crap. We lived 2 blocks from a McDonald and later, a Taco Bell. I think I got chicken mcnuggets there, once, in 1984. And I had to walk past every day to get our groceries and bring them back home.
When I said I was hungry, my mom would say "Have an Apple." or "have a carrot" or "fix yourself a tuna sandwich" and once a month or so, we got cookies or chips, and my mom would say "you can have 2 cookies after dinner" or I would get a handful of chips.
When i was thirsty, my mom would say "have a drink of water" (or milk). She wouldn't hand me some sugary fruit "beverage" (ok, so we really couldn't afford most of these things anyway, but still) I never, ever had Kool Aid until I randomly had it at someone else's house. I remember my mom screaming at my great aunt when I was 2 "I told you not to give her candy!!!!!(which is all i'd been eating all afternoon :D ")
It seems like parents these days do not always realize they are in charge of their kids, in charge of raising them to be as healthy as possible. And they keep crappy snacks in the house, and they give in to their kids desires. Of fricking course your kid is gonna want a cookie, or chips, rather than a healthy snack. It's up to you, the parent IN CHARGE to say no. And, may I add, I never played inside if I could help it. Kids today are watching TV or playing video games all the time. Not only does it shorten their attention span and not really teach them anything, but they're also, then, NOT GETTING EXERCISE. My kid will not watch TV (nature shows, or similarly educational things may be excepted, but probably not until age 2 or so) and will have no video games in the house. If my kid is bored, they can read, or go outside, or play with their toys, like I had to do.
Sorry for the rant, but kids, physical activity, and nutrition is one of my "things" :) I give out free nagging nutritional advice to friends, all the time, and keep researching the stuff.
That said, this morning I happen to stop off at Micky D's for my Sausage McCrack Muffin meal (no egg) But I haven't had that in a month or so, and they really are like crack to me...unfortunately, I love sausage in general. Not the thick kind, though... :)

I agree with most of what you said except the calling out the fast food companies - I just don't think it's all their fault...it's the parents fault....the fast food companies are just doing business...trying to make money - it sucks the way they go about it perhaps - but when it comes down to it - it's the poor judgement of the individual that's to blame....

Your thred brought up some great points - the video games/tv...I was in the same boat as you....I remember once I went with my grandpa to get gas in his truck - we were across the street from McDonalds...sooo...I started in wiht th e..."gosh I'm soo hungry grandpa - I need to eat..." and he just kept saying, "your grandma will fix you a sandwich or something when we get home..." to which I replied, "you don't know anything about kids, grandpa." haha...I also always got the response of "have some water or milk." when I complained of being thirsty...

I'm fully aware that some people are beginning not to care - it infuriates me seeing babies with bottles - filled with soda or Kool-aid - what the hell are these parents thinking?? BUT - it's not the fault of Coke or Kool-aid...it's the fault of the parent....

As for the tv and video games...it's a sad sign of our times...but there are still kids in this world who are not obese - who don't watch tv and don't play video games...my nephew and many of his friends are among them..

Yeah, it's not so much the fault of the companies, but if you think about it, if drug companies were selling us a drug that was bad for us, we'd be up in arms...it's kinda the same thing...companies don't have to sell such crappy poison food - but i meant calling them out as in, pointing out the flaws to make everyone aware - If companies are going to sell something, they shouldn't be afraid for people to call what they're selling, a spade, so to speak. I mean, it's not the companies' fault people buy stuff, but i think there is nothing wrong in pointing out what, exactly, these companies are selling...I mean, is pointing out the truth blaming them? maybe, maybe not...

Never looked at it that way - interesting point indeed...

and yeah as a result of that upbringing I have an un-ending love of oranges lol...but hey - it gave me a great foundation for who I am today - though we didn't have a lot of money there is nothing I felt I never had (the lack of video games and crap was hard at the time - now I'm grateful we couldn't afford those things).

Me, too, it's the thing my mom did right :D I mostly missed TV shows, and candy. :D But, actually, since I had to go get our groceries every day, and we lived up a huge hill, etc. 3 miles in the snow blah, there was a thrifty's on the way, and i stole a candy bar every single day on the way to the store. Bad? Yes. Grounded for the entire month of may when my mom found out? Yes. (I was 8) Stopped me? No. Slowed me down? Yes.
Strangely, the kid I played with down the hill, lived IN A TRAILOR (2 kids, mom and dad) but had an Atari! It reminds me of the kids I see all over Oakland, - TV's and Video games in their rooms, nice clothes, fat, but with bad grades, and their parents not caring how they act, or that they're getting one of the worst educations in the country either...and munching on huge bags of chips as they walk down the street, eating fast food all the time....*sigh*...their parents have nice cars, too.... *sigh*, again....oh, well... :(

Yes, but what about the types of fats and chemicals found in their products that they've only recently begun to disclose on nutritional brochures? For years, they never told us how much trans fat is in their food. They're only now beginning to do so and trans fat is the worst one for ya. Same with Nabisco and they're Oreo cookies.

Again, I don't understand why you can't see that it's more than just bad judgement. There are many sociological factors that feed into the fast food cravings that I couldn't even begin to list them. Read "Fast Food Nation," I'm tellin' ya!

Amber.. you reminded me of my childhood. My parents were both at university almost until I was school age so we had no money. In NZ kids take lunch to school, not buying it or geting a cooked lunch. My mum used to make me sandwiches.. brown bread. Her favourite filling was: carrot (grated) and sultana (raisin). I'm not kidding. Sometimes cheese and jam. Plus, sometimes a stick of celery. We never had soft drink or anything like that, incl chips, etc. I went McDonalds after nagging for years at age 8 or so and apparently hated it. I too was a kid told to have an apple and a glass of water when I said I wanted a snack. :)
