Remember all those planes and ships in trouble, fires at buildings, earthquakes, etc? This kind of movies was very popular in the 70s and early 80s. Some of them were very silly. "Earthquake" was actually boring, at least in TV, but I guess the "sensurround" effect was the key of its success.
Since I love planes, my favorite saga was Airport (just the first 3 movies). And of course I enjoyed the Airplane! movie.
And yours?

I actually enjoyed Armageddon though I remember thinking midway through - wouldn't it be funny if the whole mission failed and Earth was blown to oblivion? Why don't these movies ever end that way? I guess I have a twisted mind at times...
In addition I liked Deep IMpact and....gosh I guess I haven't seen a lot of those catastrophe movies....

I like Airplane! too... I also like Final Destination 2, does that count? There are some great scenes in that film. A lot of the those films are good because they're bad.. I like the one set in LA where the tar pits bubble up and threaten the subway? And the two women go under the ground and one gets blasted by some magma or something. Maybe that is Earthquake? Sorry, I'm not really an expert on these films. :o Avalanche (I think it's called) was pretty funny.

My all-time favorite would be The Poseidon Adventure. I love that movie and if I'm clicking through all the channels and see it, that's what I'll stop on.

Well, as FABULOUS as Gloria Swanson was in Airplane No. ?, the award has to go to Shelley "I now weigh more than Mama Cass" Winters in the Poseidon Adventure - OOOOOOOOOOO - my girdle weighed me down on that long swim - Mr. Merman . . . I mean Borgnine - kiss me to revive me

You MUST see my Shelley Winters in The Poseidon Adventure impression some day. Guaranteed fun. :p
That one would have to be my fave disaster flick. I've spent years and years pondering what the offspring of Shelley Winters and Jack Albertson would look like. Scary ****, I would assume. And Ernest Borgnine's hairy shoulders and arms petrify every time. Poor Tova. :distress:

My fav. Borgnine slam is from Merman's autobiography. It goes Chapter 4 "My mariage to Ernest Borgnine" - blank page - Chapter 5.

 is right.
I was disappointed in the Merman book, she didn't talk about her torrid lesbian affair with Jacqueline Susann.

I liked the TV movie "The Day After" about how people will continue their lives after the nuclear holocaust of World War III.
In a related way I also liked how the TV Mini-Series "The Stand" setup the whole good-vs.-evil story with the outbreak of the flu.

how about AFTER the Disaster? My fave would have to be Road Warrior with Mel Gibson
I too was going to mention the Poseidon Adventure, I think drowning at Sea would be horrible
another horrible way to go would be via Death by Shark (Jaws????)

I LOVE bad disaster movies. My favorite continues to be Twister- it's so, so, so bad and I love every second of it. I also love Volcano- not Dante's Peak, I hated it, but Volcano in all its glory. Especially the "Look! The volcano made us all the same color!" ending... hahahahahaha!!!
I like Deep Impact better than Armageddon, but would've liked Deep Impact more if they hadn't cut out Dougray Scott entirely. The Day After Tomorrow was GREAT- the plot and acting was terrible, but the effects were amazing, and it scared the living crap out of me.
I even see REALLY bad disaster movies, like The Core. I think I was the only one who saw that one.

The Poseidon Adventure and The Day After are my faves. Interestingly, The Day After was filmed in Kansas City. It was surreal watching my town disinegrate!

Haley, I know at least 3 other people who saw "The Core"; myself and 2 of my friends. They loved it. I thought it was ridiculous even for a disaster movie. When they decided to travel through the lava flow to get back to the surface I was sitting there thinking "Why did'nt any of these genious scientists think about doing that on the way down"? It seemed like they wrote the script to that one while it was shooting!

The Stand is good, but that horrible, awful ending just ruins the whole viewing experience for me. Lord, it was bad.
