I was at the store the other day and saw a wine I had never seen before from Southeastern Australia called The Little Penguin. The label even has a penguin on it! So you can bet I had to buy a bottle. I tried the chardonnay last night. It's pretty good, so I'll be buying more! Anyone here heard of or tried it besides me?

I bought my second bottle of Little Penguin Merlot last just last nite! Isn't the label adorable? And the little penguin feet on the cork? :wavey:

My sister was totally laughing at me--"This is how you choose a wine? Because it has a penguin on the label?" She just doesn't understand.

How is the merlot? I thought that would be my next purchase. The chardonnay is pretty light, but tasty.

The cork is VERY cute! And the label, well it does FM proud!

The Merlot is very good - it's light for a red...

I choose my liquor in ways like this as well...so now I'm totally curious about this wine...can you get it at any liquor store?

Most recently I became enamored with Sloe Gin Fizz...thanks to Loretta Lynn haha...

I choose my wine by silly means as well...I've had a lot of wine with beautiful labels...if there's a panther or a cat on the label, so much the better.
But i've found a few real hints for buying cheap wine.
My uncle the chef says..."when buying cheap red wine, it's a good idea to pick the one with the highest alcohol content; that will probably be the best"
If you're buying red table wine...french has the best cheap red table wine, i've found. Makes sense, they have wine with their meals and all...
Don't buy wine from California..unless it's an established napa or sonoma wine...A**holes are moving from the cities and clearing our foothill forest land (which hold an incredible diversity of species, including mountain lions) because they think it's cool to have a winery. The foothill isn't even a good place to grow wine...And I think we have enough high end wine in the world without endangering species because someone thinks they want "to live in the country and grow wine"

Patti, I love that you posted about this- hahahaha!!! I tried the merlot several weeks ago. I liked it a lot, it was good for a cheap, light red. I totally saved the cork ;-)

Deanna, I found it in my grocery store (Jewel)- it was on sale, too, being new.

I bought mine at the grocery store, Deanna. It looks like it's showing up in lots of places. I hope you find it!

And H, glad to know you gave it a shot too. I still can't believe you're old enough to (legally) drink! Although I remember smuggling you a bit of wine at a certain function back in 2000. ;)

It IS hard to believe- it seems like just yesterday we were celebrating my 'edge of seventeen' birthday. My birthday's at the end of this month, I'm on the edge of twenty-two now.

I remember the dirty looks you & D. got for that smuggling, I loved it ;)

Well a happy early birthday! I always remember the date as it was my grandmother's birthday as well.

And did you have to bring that D name up?!?!?!?! I know you lubbed him, though. I'll just write it off to your youth. ;)
