Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll..............I don't think you do!!!!!!!!!

 That's the one I prefer together with:
"You know that I loved you then
Oh, well"

Some others that I love:
"You're asking me to trust you
Well, there's little of that around"

"Well, her little tin soldier
Is covered with rust and
Your beautiful eyes...
Whoa, well they look sad to me now
And I don't even know why you left me"

"Well, I got the message: stay among the living"

Gor, when does Stevie NOT use well?

 I once started to count all the "wells" in the 'Red Rocks' video, and gave up!

"Well, well, they say that this is just a dream... ooh, well... well, I don't want to hear that.... well, Mick says, 'Stevie, well, this just is just one more link in the chain, and do not break the chain, please'... and I say... and I say... well, I have to believe him...." ;)

It's definitely excessive in that performance, but other times it's effective.
I especially like the one you picked, from "Seven Wonders." :D

I know, it's so funny, I always laugh at stevie for that, and it also makes it easy for me to sing to her, cause I can just supply a well, or perhaps a yowl, and i've filled in the space effectively  And I always know what she's gonna say! (for the songs that are new to me)
Oh, Stevie, will the amusement never end? Will the fascination never end?

First and foremost would be "Well I know you'd like to come away, but baby you can't come". After that...

- "Well I've run through rainbows and castles of candy"

-"Dusty words lying under carpet

I love Welcome to the Room...Sara and all its "well"s

My favourite would be "Well as well as you knew her" :D

And on the more serious side I love "Weeeelllll I can see that expression..." at the very end of Talk to Me. The last minute of TTM has a few good "well"s in it, I think.

A thread celebrating my biggest Stevie lyric pet peeve ! There is no good use of the throwaway word "Well". Each "Well" I hear only makes me yearn for a word that had real emotional impact or signified something. ANYTHING. It's Stevie's version of "Like" or "You Know". Oh, to excise that word from her vocabulary like the tumor it is !

Disk 3 has been going around and around in my changer lately. Most of those songs I love to sing along with. So the "well" lyric that immediately came to mind was "Well I found You," for no other reason than the song it is contained in. There are a handful of Stevie's songs that absolutely go off the Richter scale for me and this is one of them...

You're not my friend, you're not my love
And this is something that we really don't discuss
If there is no time, and there is no place.
And, if there was, well, you'd never leave a trace
And as all arch angels do to you
And as all arch enemies will finally do to you, too
Well, I found you

Laura

I have never felt like I "really" understand what Stevie meant with those arch angel lines. Not that I "really" know what she means in most of her songs :. ), but I just do not fully get those particular lyrics above. (just the arch angel lines confuse me) Anyone care to give me their interpretation?

I seem to recall a story about Thousand Days being about Stevie's association with Prince. How he showed up to put down some tracks for Stand Back and then was gone ("seems like a thousand days since you've been gone.) I'm not your friend, I'm not your lover is a line Prince used in one of his songs... I Would Die 4 U. And he also has a song called Million DAys that is very much like Thousand Days. And also the story about how she fell asleep on the floor of his house, some say because she had been partying too much, she says because it was really hot and the floor was the coolest place in the house. Which would explain the whole draggin up the stairs, etc. Anyway, if that's all true, then you can see, somewhat, in the lyrics that maybe they were partying and the arch angel part might speak to how when you live a lifestyle like that, the arch angels might help pull you out of some dangerous situations, but then your arch enemies will try to do you in too.. kinda like the struggle between good an evil. I don't get the "I found you" part tho. Who found who? And how does it fit in with arch angels, arch enemies or her association with Prince? That's the puzzling part to me.

How about this part...

And if the sun warms up the rain,
And the rain puts out the sun
Why does the greatest love become the greatest pain?

Is Stevie the sun and Prince the rain? Probably not, because I don't think he was her greatest love. So this is probably one of those songs that has been "pieced together." I love that last line.

Anyway, I really like this song. As for interpretation, I almost believe the Prince thing since there's definite lyric association to him.

Laura

Kelly

Thanks! I think you are right about the song being pieced together. Her "relationship" with Prince was always pretty fascinating. She said in 2001, I think to Courtney Love, that she never "slept with him, although he wanted to". I wonder if she is being completely truthful? I sort of believe her as she and Prince were SO different, especially back then. She being wild, he being straight.

Like several people have stated; I love "Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, I don't think you do!"

I also like "Well I have tried to be true
Well I have never known what to say
How to say...seen anything today"

and I like

"Well maybe I'm just thinking that the rooms are all on fire
Everytime that you walk in the room
Ooh, well there is magic all around you, if I do say so myself...
Well I have known this much longer than I've known you"

Well, I know you'd like to come away, but baby, you can't come."

Not really partial to this one, as there's so many good ones... but this song I've always felt is underappreciated, so:

And don't blame it on my soul
Blame it on my wild heart

Well you cease to exist

Well, I loved you more than life itself

Well, you're a front liner...

Well, I am overcome

Well, you're not like anyone else

I'm rather surprised that no one has mentioned my favorite usage of the word "well," though. In this case, I think "well" actually enhances the song...

Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older, too

^For me, that verse might just be the quintessential Stevie lyric. Plus, the "well" just makes it so much more interesting.

Darker than the image on the wall
Is the fear of it all
But he never said no to you baby
Mirror, Mirror

Ooh, sometimes your frightened
And you don't know why
There's been a few things
Well, I know you really loved a lot
And then one day
In your bright blue sky
Well, I never did say why to you...
Why... You must know...
He said No not really

Some of us will...
Some of us will never see the light
Some of us will only say,
Well, I don't want to fight about it
And then one day,
Well, you really fall in love
And you never did say
No to me did you?
He said, See ya!

Mirror, mirror
Mirror, mirror
Mirror, mirror

Memories fade like the wind
Oh, and she says
No, this will never come again
He says, Oh well... who can tell?
She says...I think you walk a thin line
Walk a thin line
She said you must know
He said No not really...

Then there are the things,
Misunderstandings...
Well I know that there's a few things
That you really loved a lot...
I know, in spite of what you say,
One thing that I really wanted,
I really wanted you...
This will leave you
Haunted in your mirror

Well, it's like bombay sapphires... (Only at certain parts, other times she says it, she doesn't say well)

Not sure if this was said...I'm too lazy to read through all 5 pages
