I was watching Over My Head from the 1976 Midnight Special and was shocked to see Lindsey using a pick! Can anyone report other incidences of this apocalyptic event?

Are you sure? I haven't seen this footage, but I don't know of any instances of Lindsey using a pick on stage.

Be that as it may, it's not as apocalyptic as it seems. Lindsey uses picks in the studio. Certain strumming styles will never sound the same with bare fingers as they do with picks, and I suspect that's why he uses them when recording. For instance, I bet he's using a pick on the chord riff in Illume.

It always looked to me like he was using a pick during Temporary One on The Dance.

I know what you mean, and it looks like he's using one at times during My Little Demon too, but I'm pretty sure that he's just playing pickless with his fingers making that shape.
I've also seen him do that on GYOW.

Well I know he isn't using one on MLD...I'll watch it tonight but the way that he's strumming just reaaaaallly looks like a pick to me on Temporary One.

I really need a life eh?

He must use a pick SOMETIMES.

Sometimes it looks as if he is using a pick, that's because he has his thumb and index finger together for some strumming parts as if he had a pick, (but he doesn't). The only times Lindsey said he uses a pick is when he is in the studio and he wants to get a good strumming sound on the acoustic. I also think in the early days of Fm Mick tried getting him use a pick on soem sons for thr albums recording.

Lindsey does not use a pick on stage. Period.

But of course this was from his first year in Fleetwood Mac, which was a long time ago. I think the perhaps occasional use of the pick early on fell by the wayside before very long. The film footage of Over My Head on the 1977 tour shows no pick. It's pick-free!

Ah-ha! I figured someone would mention something like this. Which is why I said does not. ;) Of course, in the studio he uses picks, by his own admission.

This matter of Lindsey using a pick is similar to him using a condom. ;)

I found this article on Lindsey here on the Penguin in the Blue Letter Archives and here is what he said about picks:

Rock Guitarist, Volume 2 (1977), Interview with Lindsey Buckingham

RG: how did your technique change, switching from folk to lead?

LB: That's the funny thing - I still don't use a flatpick. I always use my fingers onstage; I kind of thrash out the lead with my fingernails. I don't use any picks at all, just the bare meat. My fingernails take quite a pummeling sometimes, but it's just something you get used to - I've got a lot of calluses on the ends of my fingers. The only time I ever used fingerpicks was for bluegrass banjo, but I never used a flatpick for anything.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he uses a pick durring Temporary One on the Dance video-- but that's the ONLY time I've ever seen it happen. Watch him durring the guitar solo, though; he's using a picking technique and holding his hand in such a manner that he could not possibly be playing without one.

No. I've seen several guys who don't use picks put their index and thumb together as if they were holding one. The reason is that you get the benefit of both nails striking the strings, and that increases the volume on the up and down swings. Upswings with just the index nail lose a lot of volume.

I can vaguely remember him using a pick in a video of a live performance, and I do think it was this one. I downloaded it ages ago though, and it's long gone from my computer now. And I do remember reading an interview where he said they tried to get him to use one when they first joined (when playing live).

The man is clearly gifted lol I've been teaching myself to play the Acoustic since last year and it sounds horrible when I don't use a pick!

Yeah, I heard about him using a pick. I have a tape of it but I haven't seen it in ages.

Lindsey said before that they tried to get him to use one and I guess they won that particular battle but not one since then:)

I bet it was hard for him to use one LOL.

You can download a video of Over My Head from the Midnight Special at throwndown.net. He's clearly using a pick, playing a fender.

What I'd like to know is whether Lindsey BucKINGham uses mint wax floss or plain.

Exactly! I have this very footage on tape. Lindsey is definitely using a pick (It is brown). I have watched or listened to an interview with Lindsey that explained why he used a pick early on in Fleetwood Mac. Initially, Mick, John, and Chris wanted Lindsey to use a pick to help with the transition between Bob Welch and him/sound consistency on certain songs. Lindsey, being the new member, caved in to them. Therefore, Lindsey played with a pick for a small amount of time early on. Lindsey DID NOT want to use a pick, and after a short time, Lindsey convinces the other band members that it wasn't necessary to use a pick to achieve the effect they wanted on these songs. He hasn't used a pick on stage since, including The Dance.

If you look at studio footage, Lindsey sometimes uses a pick for certain effects on certain songs, even now---but it is rare. He has talked about this in interviews, as well.
