I can't wait to see how this plays out. I have a feeling that my fav Lindsey songs are going to get targetted early, unfortunately, so I'll probably be heartbroken by the time it's all said and done...
The ONLY song that has not been able to grow on me on this album is "Honey Hi", which I think is totally pointless and just nonexistent (even compared to "Walk a Thin Line" and other tracks). The song goes nowhere and doesn't work, in my opinion.
SO... Honey Hi? More like Honey BYE!

With Sara, there is just too much going on. SMAP is so simple yet so profound. That's what makes it a masterpiece, in my opinion. Maybe if Sara was a little more stripped down, it would have the same effect.

SMAP is so simple yet so profound. That's what makes it a masterpiece, in my opinion.
Stripped-down is fine, but pacing is everything. And the pacing of "Save Me A Place" is horrendous. I can't get through it. It makes me want to stick my head in an oven. Or slit my wrists. Or get a root-canal. Or watch paint dry.
Even though "Sara," "Storms" and "Beautiful Child" are all slow songs, at least they're paced well.
Same with "That's All For Everyone"... which I LOVE. It's simple, it's stripped down, it's slow, but it has great pacing, and... most importantly... it's INTERESTING.
Christine's much-maligned 'Tusk' offerings are far and above better than "Save Me A Place." It's the only clunker on the entire album, in my opinion. In fact, I think it's my least-favorite Lindsey song. Period.

I think it would help if we knew which song had immunity before we started voting. If you're link isn't working, then maybe the first person to answer correctly in the thread could choose immuntiy.
Like I could say the answer is "Dreams" and I want Not That Funny to have immunity.
You can either count that or not, but I think in the future it would really help to find out immunity right away and just have us answer. So maybe you could use my thread here as the first example...
But if not my vote is again for Save Me a Place

Ok heres the question......
What was Fleetwood Mac's only no. 1 hit? (Yea I know its easy, I promise they will get better)
They have to be accurate, at least, Jacob. Both Albatross & Dreams were No. 1 songs.
Were there others?

You Make Loving Fun and Dreams were #1 in Canada.
Oh Well and Go Your Own Way were #1 in Holland.
And add in the already mentioned albatross and that means worldwide Fleetwood Mac had 5 #1 hits.
.
Heh not only did I get the original question right, I added like 4 things. I should DEFINITELY get to choose who gets immunuty  And to remind you it's Not That Funny

You forget that I love the esoteric stuff. But "Save Me A Place" isn't esoteric... it's just boring. ;)
Meanwhile, "Save Me A Place" is molasses rolling up a hill in June. :p It reminds me of those dreams where you're trying to walk fast or run, but your legs feel extremely heavy and you're not making any progress.
"Save Me A Place" is as esoteric as "When I See You Again", don't get me wrong. But it definitely isn't inaccessible. There may be a few people on this board rooting out for it (not me though) but when I read commentary from outside reviewers, stuff like "the most emotionally resonant piece on the album", it can be identified with by others, too.
"SMAP" is Lindsey's attempt to make music in the singer-songwriter formula, without the usual "excessive" arranging. It's a formula he rarely gets into. The song speaks of depression like "When I See You Again", but then again not the kind of depression that you seem to identify with. "Don't know why I have to work, don't know why I can't play". It's a very passive statement, it speaks of mornings when you just can't be bothered to get ouf of bed. And yet there's a glimmer of hope coming through it, like in "When I See You Again".
Of course, whatever you're stating in this thread isn't any less harsh than the "WISYA" 'critique' that you've seen yourself. So there goes your reputation as the UN of the board out of the window. Bring on the US. ;)
Not that I mind that much. "SMAP", "WISYA", in fact, everything this band and its solo artists have released, is just awfully boring.

It's not that I can't identify with it, or anything like that. I think we can all identify with the desire to play instead of working, and I think we can all identify with the need to have our "place" in the world.
The song just doesn't do anything for me.
It's not even a case like "Say Goodbye," where I LOVE the lyrics, but I'm not crazy about the album arrangement (I am, however, completely in love with the 'Live In Boston' performance). I'm unable to find anything to like about "Save Me A Place," even though I want to, and even though I've tried.
Of course, whatever you're stating in this thread isn't any less harsh than the "WISYA" 'critique' that you've seen yourself. So there goes your reputation as the UN of the board out of the window. Bring on the US. ;)
I think I can be allowed one song to have a deep dislike for. ;)
Even others that I've cited as "least favorites," are not songs I have a deep distaste for. They're just songs I like less than others.
But with "Save Me A Place".... well, let's just say I won't be joining its appreciation society any time soon. :)
What boggles my mind, is that "Save Me A Place" is so often put ahead of "That's All For Everyone"... which, in my opinion, is one of Lindsey's all-time best songs. Certainly one of his shining moments on 'Tusk.'
I listen to that song in total bliss. :)

I think I can be allowed one song to have a deep dislike for.
That was never the issue here. Like what you like, dislike what you dislike, write the usual "that's cool, that's crap" posts and it doesn't bother me.
It's just that in this case your rhetorics are on the same level as Dissention's "WISYA" bashing. What raises tempers in you is bound to raise tempers in others as well. No matter how eloquently the Beaver County Librarian might type them down, they're still spurred by the emotional response to the piece, and quite possibly by the critique that has been thrown at one of the most esoteric moments of your preferred member in the band, a song that you have a deep emotional connection with. But whatever.
What boggles my mind, is that "Save Me A Place" is so often put ahead of "That's All For Everyone"... which, in my opinion, is one of Lindsey's all-time best songs. Certainly one of his shining moments on 'Tusk.'
Earlier you stated that "there's absolutely nothing of any interest going on in the song". How come Bob Josef then states on this page http://starling.rinet.ru/music/fmacc.htm#Tusk that "he can suck you in anyway, with the title track, "Save Me A Place," "Walk a Thin Line," because the sound is so compelling."? Obviously the aural experiences of "Save Me A Place" from both of you differ like night and day.
In the Tango In The Night survivor thread you criticized "Ricky", even typed down it's lyrics to show how "anemic" it is and how there's not that much going on in that song either. Considering how you are a person who takes lyrical contributions to be very important to a song, it is not surprising to hear an opinion like this from you.
So, um, what makes "That's All For Everyone" so outstanding then? There's not much lyrical content there either, now is there? Of course, if you prefer to hear less than two minutes of a musical & lyrical loop than four minutes of one (="Ricky") then I do understand your statement.
"Save Me A Place", "That's All For Everyone" and "Ricky" are in essence relatively esoteric pieces with sparse lyrics. The message of these songs reaches beyond the superficial lyrical content. Whatever simplicity there seems to be, it is always shaded by something complex and carefully thought-out. The same I can say for the likes of "When I See You Again". The things the songs are trying to convey may be cryptic for some, but they can all be related to on a deep emotional level. Of course it might take a bulldozer, a battle-axe and the willpower of Mohammed to get to that point, but whatever.

I don't know how it comes off, but I never take personal offense to anyone not liking "When I See You Again."
I think the song is brilliant, and to be totally honest, I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks about it. I'd be perfectly content being the one and only person in this entire world who likes it. I'm a snob in those regards. If I like a song, my opinion is the only one that matters to me.
But I'm fully prepared to discuss its merits, and to explain why I love it so much... without just falling into the "because I like it, that's why" trap.
And it's the same thing with "Save Me A Place." I'm not going to just vote it off, or say I dislike it, without offering an explanation as to why.
I'm not saying anyone else should dislike it... it just surprises me that it's liked more than "That's All For Everyone." A song that I feel, while lyrically simple (in the best of ways, mind you), has a lot of depth to it, both vocally and instrumentally.
But at the end of the day, it's not something I lose any sleep over.
Also, about the lyrics thing... I thought I've stated on many occasions that a song doesn't have to be lyrics-heavy for me to enjoy it. I am a Lindsey fan, and most of his songs are not lyrics-heavy. But yeah, if you're going to make me choose between someone who tends to have sparse lyrics, and someone whose songs are lyrics-dominated, then I'll take the latter... but that's just the way I lean, and it doesn't at all mean that I don't still like and appreciate the former style.
I also thought I explained why I feel the way I do about "Ricky" (which is, for the record, a song I like).
It's just that I didn't feel it was strong enough for 'Tango,' as it is. "Everywhere" is also a relatively simple song, lyrically, and I love that song... and I know you have a deep distaste for it ("housewife music," and all that). In the case of "Ricky," I just feel that, at nearly 5 minutes long, it doesn't have enough going on in it to merit a spot on the album. I think that's a reasonable enough opinion.

And yet you still always speak up whenever the usual "WISYA" brawl comes up. Honestly, is it really all about keeping the precious balance between Lindsey and Stevie for you?
Do not try to pretend that when you see a particularly harsh critique of "When I See You Again" your emotions are not stirred. Random opinions from random, unknown posters shouldn't bother anyone; when you see an established member of the board making a statement like that several times in a row then at least I would take it seriously.
Your entire paragraph there could knock over your "everyone in this world can relate to Stevie's songs, if they really try" theory.
And it's the same thing with "Save Me A Place." I'm not going to just vote it off, or say I dislike it, without offering an explanation as to why.
Remember this thread? http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=12101&page=1&pp=15 This is where Mylittledemon stated something like 'Time sucks donkey's balls' and made a few people angry because of that.
Now let's look at what you have been writing earlier in this survivor thread:
Sorry. "Save Me A Place" IS musical sludge.
Other than the harmonies, there's absolutely nothing of any interest going on in the song. It's about as interesting as watching molasses roll up a hill in June.
It makes me want to stick my head in an oven. Or slit my wrists. Or get a root-canal. Or watch paint dry.
"Save Me A Place" isn't esoteric... it's just boring.
"Save Me A Place" sucks. I can't help it.
I'm not trying to be spiteful or purposefully bitchy... it just sucks.
So quite honestly, I do not think this is anything different from what Mylittledemon stated in that thread I linked to. Only in a couple of places do I see a thing like "in my opinion", or something like that. Otherwise you're stating the thing like you were stating a fact, a thing ChiliD criticizes Mylittledemon of in the that particular thread.
Traditionally on this board certain members have reminded other members of the fact that saying something sucks is quite different from saying one doesn't care for the song/album/whatever (see Wetcamelfood's post, the last one in the linked thread). I understand this personally. While it's easy to say that everyone on this board speaks for themselves, and that everything people type here should be taken with a grain of salt, it's not as simple in reality. Things like "IMO" are usually put there to cool things down.
In fact, I have even seen you criticizing certain people (you know who I'm referring to) for typing down similar things you just did in a thread, about a particular song. Which is why it was surprising to see statements like this from you several times in a row.
I'm not even that moved by "Save Me A Place". I'm just here to speak for the people who obviously are tremendously moved by it. I believe they weren't that bothered by your opinion on it. I also believe they can speak for themselves, Dissention and Kate have shown to me that they sure can and will do it when they feel the need for it.
But the weirdest thing was that you actually answered to every one of their comments, and even still felt the need to add the obligatory "SMAP sucks" statement, dressed in various guises. So you hate the song? Why bother saying it multiple times within a short time-frame? In fact, it was only when I came around with my usual long-winded nose-picking that you started to tone that opinion down.
But at the end of the day, it's not something I lose any sleep over.
Yes, well, I'll soon go off and start turning in my bed and enter work tired after having wetted my sheets because of this demon exorcising.
You don't care for the song? Fine. That never bothered me, it was your rhetorics that did.
I also thought I explained why I feel the way I do about "Ricky" (which is, for the record, a song I like).
Which you did do, but we'd have to have a musicological analysis on why "Ricky" supposedly has less going on in it than "That's All For Everyone". But of course, tastes are tastes, and "writing about music is like dancing about architecture".
"Everywhere" is also a relatively simple song, lyrically, and I love that song... and I know you have a deep distaste for it ("housewife music," and all that).
I do not have a deep distaste for any Fleetwood Mac song. As a great man once said: "it's a stupid thing to do, to hate music. You either care for it or you don't."
If I thoroughly hated "housewife music", I would also have to hate "Warm Ways", "Dreams", "Gypsy", "Only Over You", "Mystified", "Soul Drifter", "Nights In Estoril", "Friend", etc, most of those songs that I truly love.
I have learned to like "Everywhere" and it never took that long, at first though I felt it threatened my values of good music and my appreciation of Fleetwood Mac. It isn't all that different from what Chris did before, it was just the utter minimalism of it that initially seemed inappropriate. That's something that Chris rarely tried, maybe that's why it's still not too convincing. But a heartfelt thing it is, all the same. If I called it "housewife music", I never intended that statement to be a bashing one. Did I not call "Honey Hi" a group-sex song? Did I not call "Family Man" and "When I See You Again" self-parodies? Those are my honest opinions of them, no matter how goofball they may seem for some. Make of those what you want. But the overtones in the statements I have not intended as negative ones.
But, whatever.

Random opinions from random, unknown posters shouldn't bother anyone; when you see an established member of the board making a statement like that several times in a row then at least I would take it seriously.
Am I not allowed to defend the merits of a song I like? Do I have to give any weight to someone else's opinion, in order to still be allowed to disagree?
If someone says something sucks, and I disagree, then I'm going to open my mouth. Just as I expect someone to disagree with me when I dislike a song that they like.
The debates and the disagreements have never been an issue. ;)
Your entire paragraph there could knock over your "everyone in this world can relate to Stevie's songs, if they really try" theory.
Not at all. I said that it doesn't matter to me if I'm the only one who likes a song... I didn't say that no one else is ABLE to like the song.
Big difference. ;)

I could just say that I'm only being funny. :) I mean, everyone tells me to lighten up, and just take comments in a humourous way... so why can't I try my hand at that?
I guess I can't branch out a little, and try a different tact... I don't wear it well apparently. :o Ah well.
While I didn't add "in my opinion" to every one of my statements, one of my initial comments was, "it's the only clunker on the album, in my opinion."
But we'll fix the others...
"Sorry. "Save Me A Place" IS musical sludge, IMO."
"Other than the harmonies, there's absolutely nothing of any interest going on in the song, in my opinion. It's about as interesting as watching molasses roll up a hill in June, IMHO.

That's something that Chris rarely tried, maybe that's why it's still not too convincing. But a heartfelt thing it is, all the same. If I called it "housewife music", I never intended that statement to be a bashing one.
It sure didn't sound like a vote of approval... especially when you were offering it as the reason to vote the song off. ;)
I guess you and I just have a hard time articulating ourselves when it comes to likes and dislikes regarding Fleetwood Mac. ;)

Then someone can go "well, I don't agree with them, but at least they already know that their opinions are HUMBLE. I won't have to take em down a notch"

That's All For Everyone
Well... amongst all of the Lindsey songs off Tusk one I surely DON'T hate is "Save Me A Place"... That and "That's Enough For Me" are my two faves from him in this album... I would vote off "Not That Funny" and "Not That Funny Part 2" (a.k.a. "I Know I'm Not Wrong") first, that's for sure!

I reviewed all of Tusk last night, and i realized my vote would have to be:
Walk a Thin Line
By the way, Rumours 77, Can Tusk have 2 survivors since it's a double album?I think that is an idea that should definitely be implemented....
AMber
Also what about the fact that it was 1 CD? I mean I dont know, How could I split it up into 2 after it has started? I think Its a good idea just dont know how to do it?

Traditionally on this board certain members have reminded other members of the fact that saying something sucks is quite different from saying one doesn't care for the song/album/whatever (see Wetcamelfood's post, the last one in the linked thread). I understand this personally. While it's easy to say that everyone on this board speaks for themselves, and that everything people type here should be taken with a grain of salt, it's not as simple in reality. Things like "IMO" are usually put there to cool things down.
Darling, I get criticized and reprimanded for calling some of Stevie's songs "garbage," it's just par for the course these days.
Save Me A Place is a fantastic song. He took very minimalistic elements and somehow managed to make an emotionally compelling song out of them. In this case, I think the song benefits from not having a whole mess of words to it, he says it all in the few he chose to use and the accompanying music. Regardless if other people like it or think it's "sludge," I do and it's one of my favorites for many reasons.
I'm not offended at someone expressing their views on it, even if they hate it, but I have to wonder why people who criticize me for such harsh language when referring to tunes use that same harsh language when referring to SMAP. The language doesn't bother me one bit because I'm just as harsh. But don't call me out next time or I'll have to throw the "hypocrisy" word around and eventually put a "Rescind the Strike!" in my signature. ;)

It's exceedingly funny how things get twisted so.
I've never called anyone on the way they critique songs, but rather the way they talk to others. As I've said... until I'm blue in the face... it's one thing to say a song sucks, it's another thing to say that someone who likes it (or dislikes it) isn't smart enough to know better, or leave them to feel as if their intelligence is being called into question by harsh comments and implications.
I don't care what's said about the songs... they don't have feelings. I care about the people here, and their feelings.

To me, whenever anyone makes a VALUE judgment on something, they are stating an opinion. I dont need "IMO" to tell me that.
It does annoy me, however, when someone OVERLTLY PRETENDS that their judgment isn't an opinion, but fact. You know, the posts that have injected "No question about it" or "You can't deny this" or something to that effect. When such statements are not there, implicitly, we can take it to mean that the poster understands that what they are saying is an opinion that is not shared by everyone.
But then again, that's JMHO. ;)

Exactly! The whole "My opinions on ____ are shared by all smart people" (implied: because I am just that infallibly brilliant) is so laughable. Last time I checked, having an exaggerated-to-the point-of-delusional sene of self-importance didn't require too many brain cells. Quite the opposite.
Once again, "Save Me A Place" gets my vote. I don't like it and I don't have to say why.

 Yep, those are some pretty awful lyrics there. But I love that song in the way that many people love "Save me a Place" for the music, production, harmonies, etc., not for the lyrics. Although I have to admit that every once in awhile, something totally cliche and shallow really affects me. "Come on baby, could you ever be just a little close to me," is exquisite to me for some reason, and even more so with Christine's vocals, of course. Just IMO, of course.

Moving on. I Am always surprised at the negative passions that Save Me a Place stirs with some people. Tastes are hard to debate, yet the song has such so much appeal that certain reactions still manage to surprise me. It is one of the best songs Lindsey has ever done and may well be the best song in Tusk. Lindsey says with 30 words what a lot of songwriters, including his bandmates, couldn't say with 200.
Be that as it may, my vote goes to Brown Eyes. That's about the most boring song on the album, and unfortunately drags it down.

It's something I strongly disagree with, although you will see me voting off chris' songs first. I think the opener and closer of tusk are perfection. But what's in between written by the two others is not perfection at all. It's dynamic, weird, dark, bouncy, esoteric, warm and emotional. But if you take it song by song there's more tension in lindsey and stevie's songs. But what makes the album a masterpiece would not have been reached without that counterpart that Chris delivers. And by the way I love the almost lame erotic tension of Brown Eyes. It's teasing. Lazy, and horny in a very English way.

Wasn't it you who pretty much told me that if I call a song "garbage" to watch out for the responses of others? I see no difference here.
Yep, I told you that harsh comments breed harsh responses, and that's true. As has been demonstrated countless times.
And I said this in response to your comments about the way people have talked to *you.*
I've talked to those people about the way they react to things that are said, and I've explained that harsh rebuttals only continue the pattern.
But I don't expect people to be able to turn the other cheek forever. People get sick of things, and get tired of waiting for them to be straightened out.
All I was trying to do is head things off at the pass.
So the point I was trying to get across in the other thread, and which you twisted in this thread, was not how anyone talks about the songs, but how they talk to each other.
At any rate, I'm done with this now. I've explained myself on this, ad nuseaum, and it's obvious by the response I've gotten, that not everyone cares how they make others feel.

Lindsey has had other songs in a similar vein, which were far more effective... in my opinion. And even songs like "Not That Funny," "Walk A Thin Line" and "That's All For Everyone," that others seem to deeply dislike, are songs that I'm very fond of.

Not That Funny.....

I could just say that I'm only being funny.
Of all of yours posts discussing "Save Me A Place" in this thread, this is the only one that I can see as attempting to be humorous: http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showpost.php?p=193969&postcount=55.
While I personally love reading openly funny assasinations of music (see Abba's The Name Of The Game biography, where they practically destroy nearly every other '60s and '70s band/artist that isn't Abba), there's a certain limit to everything for me. Even when dissing music that I do not care much for.
So, you made a joke about your dislike of "Save Me A Place", cool.
Then you had to repeat the same thing in the subsequent posts in different ways, while actually adding nothing to the message you were going for.
Why did you really bother to answer to people when you were just redressing the same point all over again? One would think that the one attempt at humour was enough. Was it really so important to run the same point into the ground, so that everyone would understand that you dislike "Save Me A Place"? No one posted anything else than their opinion of the song, and you were the only one who bothered to repeat your message for everyone.
So at that point the IMOs and hints of humour you had originally inserted to a single post of yours were zeroed out in my mind. And your critique of "Save Me A Place" turned into an almost negative repetition to me. Seriously, if you feel it's a monotonous 'sludge', must your critique attempt for the same effect? ;)
It's different to call someone crap than it is to call something that someone created crap, I agree. Yet this is a fan board. We have witnessed cases where people get very upset because a particular favourite thing of theirs is critiqued harshly. I brought one up there. That's a thing that everyone should keep in mind. "Say something once, why say it again?" Repeat the same point when the argument comes up later, fine. But in the same thread, several times? Come on.
It would be weird if people always had to say IMO before everything they said, cause, unless you're quoting someone, who else's opinion would it be?
AMber, honey :xoxo: I never said that one should use the IMO stuff 'everywhere' (now there's a pun, will Johnny catch it or not? ;)). I just think it should be used when one is expressing a particularly, or even somewhat, extreme opinion. And it's not that IMOs will always help the message that much. Look at Johnny's list, it still doesn't look that much better, now does it? ;) It's all about the way you type the whole thing.
Here's again that thread I linked to: http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=12101&page=1&pp=15. John (Wetcamelfood) wrote the last post on that. He typed:
It really is down to the way you say it. Look at these 2 sentences and see if they come across different to you (and these are your opinions, not mine, just for the record for everyone else) I can't remember the exact words you used a long thread ago now so just paraphrasing here:
1. It is my opinon that Time sucks
2. Hey, it's my opinion. Time sucks.
The first part of sentence 2 may allude to it being your opinion but then the second part turns it upside down. Just something to consider is all. OK?
I have nothing more to add to that. Let's get humble then. ;)
It sure didn't sound like a vote of approval... especially when you were offering it as the reason to vote the song off.
I never said that "Everywhere" was the sole representative of the housewife side on TITN; I spoke of the housewives section of the album. Which isn't all Chris, btw.
I said that at a point when the three most esoteric pieces on the album had already been voted off, mind you. And I like everything on Tango In The Night, as you probably know.
Look at my past survivor thread posts: there's hardly anything positive that I say for any song when I'm voting.
For me that's the point of the survivor. Basically everything Fleetwood Mac has released, in every line-up, is flawed in a way. That's what makes it human, but not everyone will find those flaws appealing.
So when I choose a song to drop in these threads, a song that I respond to the least from the remaining ones, I will try to find some flaws from them. I do not feel the need to add a positive note to the one I try to vote off, like you do. Speaks of our opinions of the world, now doesn't it? ;)
But of course, that's what you weren't picking up on. You were picking up on my "housewives" comment. That I hinted at "Everywhere" being a piece that only the 'bored housewives, the ones who do not actively listen to music and therefore will respond to any piece of banality that comes their way', will like.
As I said, there's numerous songs in the catalogue of the Rumours line-up (and even the Welch-era ones, not to mention the Post-Rumours ones) that fit this "housewives" category. Because how do you go and prove that "Everywhere" is more banal than the others, or that it has less care put into it than the rest of the band's output?
So if you understood that I loathe housewives and their lifestyles, and that I think "Everywhere" is perfect for them, you didn't get me right.
No, I don't live like they do. Yes, they are a common target for every "thinkin' musical dude with brain". But I don't think they take on to everything that comes their way anyway, or that their experiences of music is any less deeper than those of people with different, more active relationships to music.
I might as well have criticized "WTTR...S", "WISYA" or "Seven Wonders" being the usual Chiffonhead songs. Or "Big Love", "Caroline" and "Family Man" being songs that only sexually perverted people will completely identify with.
Because, quite frankly, our experiences with music are very much dictated by the life we live and the way God or whatever has shaped us.
That's something that I will discuss in the next post. For now, let me just tell you that I've met a punk rocker in the BuckinghamNicks.net chatroom who thinks Christine is the best thing that's ever happened to Fleetwood Mac. "No one falls into a simple set of labels", neither does the music that's out there. :)

Jacob: no vote in this one.
Not at all. I said that it doesn't matter to me if I'm the only one who likes a song... I didn't say that no one else is ABLE to like the song.
Big difference.
Then this. You finally picked up the bait I set up for you, so I might as well keep the ball a-movin'. ;)
You already know what post I'm going to be referring to. The one I never got around to answering. http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showpost.php?p=191216&postcount=454
For me, relatability IS a different thing from being universal. Which is why thousands of people can find great appeal in a particular song, but it will still never be loved across the board.
Relatability is also a thing one can not measure at all, in any way. It's a thing that's based on our own beliefs, and our own emotional responses to a song.
Universality can be measured, not just through charts but also through the song being played on the radio, even decades after its original release. If people are willing to dig up something that wasn't much of a success in the past then that should prove something on the staying power of the material.
Not that measuring universality through those ways is always accurate, but it's the only thing we really have.
And, because of that, I DO tend to think that one can find things to relate to, even in Stevie's most esoteric writings... but that you have to care enough. If you just want to be entertained on a basic level, then you're probably not going to have much use for Stevie Nicks. Her songs require more of an emotional investment, in my opinion.
And another question is, how do you get to that point where you start caring enough?
I believe that only a few of us got into Fleetwood Mac because of an album track that was never played on the radio. We got into them because of the things we heard passively at various places and at one point got interested. That didn't make us fans. Rumours gathered dust in my shelf for a whole year before I eventually went out and bought another Fleetwood Mac album. Becoming a fan is usually a gradual process, it's not like being hit by lightning or anything like that.
So we started acquiring their music and at one point noticed that our interests towards the band were bordering to obsessive. We had become fans, those rotating windmills that you see on the roofs sometimes.
Again, most people never get to that point, or even near it. How come we did then? We obviously noticed that there was something we related to a lot. We kept on playing those records, to the point where we started to develop an appreciation for the band's lesser-known works too. But I believe we would never have got to that point if the band's universal material hadn't existed.
No casual listener will want to hear a song for the second or third time if there's nothing in it that he/she can relate to.
Basically, if you're saying with that "emotional involvement" argument of yours that one should listen to the song a lot in order to appreciate it, then I do not agree with it at all.
A piece that you have to work hard for, in order "to get it", is no good for me. It's different when you're trying to get accustomed to new genres though.
Did Fleetwood Mac go down in quality at one point then, or just in public favour? No one knows for sure. We know what the music history books will tell us, though.
Did the band members start writing more esoteric, less universal material? Possibly. You know my usual defense for Lindsey Buckingham; the topics he conveys are not all suited to the AOR format that he's been boxed into, the music that he makes speaks more for the '60s experimentalism of Brian Wilson and the DIY attitude of punk rock, things that are not associated with AOR at all. And the emotional content that's being dealt with in those genres is very different.
Most everyone can enjoy "Go Your Own Way," or "Big Love," or "Trouble," but it takes more of an investment to enjoy... to that same degree... something like "Play In The Rain" or "D.W. Suite."
And of course, the one thing that I will point out here is that "Play In The Rain" and "D.W. Suite" are quite unlike anything Lindsey's done. They're multi-movement suites that break down the usual song-form that he uses. No wonder if they might take more listens for some people so that they could start appreciating them.
Whereas for material like "When I See You Again" there isn't much defense at all.
It was released on a popular album when Fleetwood Mac were in public favour again, yet it never rose to the same status as "Landslide", another 'mere album track', even though it is very close to it musically.
The depression that it supposedly conveys isn't all that obvious, since only a few people around here have picked up on that.
For me the fact that even the diehard fans are totally split on it just underlines its esoteric quality.
But who cares for these arguments anyway, when all we have is Kierkegaardian belief on the quality of their music.
But anyway, I'm just trying to say that it's not that I think Lindsey & Stevie's songs can necessarily be easily covered by anyone...it's just that, I feel their music CAN be appreciated by anyone who cares enough to make the investment.
And it necessarily wasn't all about being able to cover a song in the first place. There is music that is universal and still can not be covered without losing a lot of the original impact.
I also wonder how appropriate examples in all this we fans are:
I related to the emotions Stevie conveyed in her songs, before I had any knowledge of her back-story. So it was never "I like it because Stevie wrote it," I liked it for what it was.
That was when you were 13-14 and your experiences in life had taken you to areas that some people will never go to. You found comfort in Stevie Nicks because her music spoke to you. And that was because of the way you were born, and because of your own experiences.
AMber (tell me if you don't like that typing, girl ;)) noticed that she found Stevie's voice extremely attractive, at various ages in her life.
Romy found Stevie last year and discovered an immediate passion for her.
Why did these things happen? How come they didn't happen to other people? Obviously there's something in us that made us far more receptive to the artists than the others usually are. This always speaks of our experiences in life, the things we've been through. We don't have to know that much about the artists themselves. They already convey their experiences through their music, that's when we pick up on it.
In the end all people are exposed in certain areas emotionally, and not everything will ever speak to those areas, even though I believe that one could relate to all music.
I'm an extreme person myself. I can go from the industrial, ugly noise of Coil to Frank Sinatra's bossanova recordings within the same hour, and get maximum enjoyment and emotional involvement out of both. But even then, my range of human emotions, which I do measure through music, is limited. I will never learn to enjoy, or even listen to, all music. Those limitations are there in all of us.
But yes. One can relate to everything in the end. I believe that even the stuff that you call teen-pop garbage can be related to. And that Britney Spears is as 'deep' as Stevie Nicks, because there is no way to measure 'depth'. I may identify with the latter a lot more than with the former, but that's just me-emotions-a-talkin'.
I'm glad to see writers like Nick Hornby bringing out arguments like "there's incredible depth in banality". That means the most common pop cliches you hear, the stuff that can turn you off, but when you actually manage to combine them for the perfect pop song, it's magic. Everyone can draw their lines of class and trash themselves, of course. If you laugh at that, how would that be any different from those who laughed at '60s Motown because it was the "more superficial, bubblegummy alternative to Stax"? And a lot of those songs that were made there are classics now. So how do we know what will survive from our times? We'll just have to wait and see.
And because one can relate to everything, then Stevie Nicks, or the members of Fleetwood Mac, past and present, aren't in any better position than anyone else whose current material is now being publicly ignored.
Good night, y'all.

I'm assuming the inclusion of "Honey Hi" was an oversight, since we are only doing Round Two over, and that was voted off on Round One. Correct? Provided that is indeed the case, I vote off "Never Forget" once again. However, if for some reason we are doing this all over again (which I think would be pointless, since only Round Two was corrupted), I would vote for "Honey Hi."

Gaius... as usual, both of your posts were very interesting. Also, as is usual, I agreed with some of what you said, and disagreed with some other things.
But I really don't have the time to respond to every comment you made. Besides, I'd just be repeating myself (for about the millionth time) at this point anyway.
It's getting so that I'm not sure what point either you or I are even trying to make anymore, other than the fact that we both happen to love flapping our gums about what makes this band tick.
If my comments about "Save Me A Place" were too harsh, as well as being redundant... uhm... oh well.
It would normally be my knee-jerk reaction to apologize for that, but I don't care to. I can be unapologetic in my opinions, too. :)
Either way, I don't care for the song... as I've made clear. No grudges, no spitefullness, no plot to save Stevie's songs (for the record, I'd rather see "Angel" go before "I Know I'm Not Wrong")... I just plain don't like it.
So when I choose a song to drop in these threads, a song that I respond to the least from the remaining ones, I will try to find some flaws from them. I do not feel the need to add a positive note to the one I try to vote off, like you do. Speaks of our opinions of the world, now doesn't it? ;)

Well, one would think it would be easy enough to count all the votes and have a runoff when there was a tie, yet that didn't happen either. Then there was a list posted indicating Honey Hi was back in but turns out it isn't. Or is it?
