View Full Version : Summer movies?

I know we've had threads about them all, but any opinions about our summer blockbusters as of yet?

Anyone see the awesomeness that is The Bourne Supremacy? The suckitude of The Village? The munchiness of Harold & Kumar? The will-cause-vomit-to-rise-in-your-throatness of crap like Chronicles of Riddick? Spider-Man?? Even Napoleon Dynamite?? (which made me want to chew off my ankle and eat it?)

I've really dug Spider-Man, Bourne Supremacy, and the Door in the Floor... but I think I've SEEN everything else!

I liked Spiderman.

All of a sudden it seems there are a few movies out that are worth seeing. First time in awhile.

I loved Bourne Supremacy, Manchurian Candidate (I thought it was gonna suck badly), Stepford Wives, Door In the Floor, and Fahrenheit 9/11.

Shyamalan's movies all suck, so the Village won't be any different. I won't see it. ;)

I have only seen two movies this summer - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Eternal Sunshine - which I think is a bit older...

Movies are super expensive here and I'm trying to save money so I haven't seen any movies in DC...:(

I really enjoyed the Stepford Wives. I thought both Anchorman and Dodgeball were funny and good, mindless entertainment. I also saw Spiderman 2 and was disappointed.

I was thinking about Catwoman - Inexplicably, it got a good review in the SF chronicle, a bad review from Ebert & Roper. I still might see it cause i like catwomen in general, i want to see the outfits bad, and I like Sharon Stone in "B" movie performances, which is what most of her performances turn into by virtue of it being her. I also like jumping and flips, and did i mention outfits?
Anyone seen it?
Want to see Bourne, Stepford, and Garden State

All of his movies are exercises in pretentiousness and ego-stroking. The Sixth Sense was lifelessly dull and the ending was more self-congratulatory than satisfying. Signs was ruined because he showed the aliens (which took away ALL of the suspense and sense of dread), the ending was utter ****, and the sub-plot about Gibson's dead wife was irritating. Unbreakable was...unwatchable.

I haven't seen many movies this summer because i've been in summer school and working. BUT I did see "Anchorman" last weekend and I thought it was one of the dumbest movies I'd ever seen.

I liked Unbreakable but hated Sixth Sense & Signs!

I loved Spider-Man II. I liked Stepford Wives well enough. The Bourne Supremacy was GREAT. I liked Anchorman okay, but wanted to love it. I really loved what Cuaron did with Harry Potter- but wow!- I've almost completely forgotten about it.

I'm looking forward to seeing The Manchurian Candidate, Garden State (we just put out the soundtrack- it's great!), and Collateral this weekend.

Dodgeball was fun, too, but not as fun as I wanted it to be- much like Anchorman. I do have a natural response of giggling anytime I see anyone get smacked in the balls, too. I did like the cameos in Anchorman, and I appreciated what they were trying to do with stuff like the turf war/gang fight, but- eh. I think I only really laughed my butt off when they were just riffing- like the exchange between him & Christina Applegate in the film and in the credits.

I think I've seen almost everything this summer. I even saw The Notebook!!

To be honest, the last movie I saw in the theater that SUCKED was Secret Window. That was a baaaaaaaaaaaaaad movie in every sense of the word. If Johnny Depp can't even save it, you know you're in trouble.

I just saw The Human Stain with Kidman and Hopkins and really enjoyed it. It wasn't as awe-inspiring as the book, but it was great. I'd recommend it to anyone for a rental. ;)

Am I the only one that loves Signs??? And Secret Window was good, I love Johnny, and yeah that movie, you can only watch it like 5 times lol, this coming from someone who has Seen Pirates of the Carribbean and Once Upon a Time in Mexico over 60 times heh. I really want to see The Village. I saw Shrek 2, that was cute, and King Arthur heh, I very much prefer the original myth, cause they ruined it SOOOOO much, and I cant stand Kiera Knightly ugh, anyway yeah lol

I haven't been able to see anything this summer unfortunately. I think this week my mom and I are going to see The Village. The big draw for me about Shymalan's films are the fact that they are all filmed locally. His film scout was checking out my dads property for scenes but Shymalan insisted upon being in PA. Having grown up around here my entire life, it's cool to see the area on the big screen. I thought Signs was terrible and Unbreakable was horrendous but I really loved The Sixth Sense. I hope this film will be decent and i'm looking forward to Ron Howard's daughters performance which is supposedly stellar.

I'd like to go and see Before Sunset, Garden State (i love Natalie Portman), We Don't Live Here Anymore and Bright Young Things. I have yet to see The Notebook but i'd like to see that as well.

Hayley, who's on the soundtrack??

estranged4life
08-02-2004, 11:46 PM
"Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", twice...Once the night it was released (In an expensive AMC 24 theatre which had the worse seating I have ever seen) & the second time at the local theatre (Great seating & sound...Plus only $3.50!!!)

I want to see "Metallica-Some Kind Of Monster" but the only place it is playing in OKC is at the above mentioned AMC 24.

Garden State soundtrack (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002J58LK/qid=1091509023/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl15/002-5151150-1861643?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)

The Garden State soundtrack has Coldplay, Iron & Wine, a couple songs from the Shins, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. We've been told that the songs came right off Zach Braff's iPod (gag) and he was lucky that everyone allowed them. It's a nice compilation, actually.

I forgot about Before Sunset! I'm waiting for it to move out of the city and into the suburbs for me to see it. I used to love Before Sunrise. Re-watched it a little while ago.

Brian- $3.50 for a movie?!! Gosh. I pay $7.00 for a cheap student ticket. No wonder I've started to sneak into so many movies for free. Metallica's also on my list- I stopped being a fan long ago, but the concept fascinates me. And I love the guys who did the film- their documentaries about the WM3 were amazing.

How much do other people pay?

the Carnegie theatre has only 1 price, $3.50...Unlike AMC 24 which was $8.50 and that price was for the 10:45PM showing on Harry Potter...

I loved both of the "Paradise Lost" movies...The second was interesting in showing that there is reasonable doubt in the WM3 case (Even Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam gave his financial support to the WM3), I still feel that whole trial was a "witch hunt".

I've sent $$ to Damien's legal fund, and I have a great silver bracelet they sell on the site as a fundraiser, too. Eddie Vedder's donated tons of money, and Henry Rollins has organized several fundraising concerts and tours, as well as a Black Flag tribute album where the proceeds go to the fund.

The second one was fascinating- in that they actually interviewed the freak show that I have no doubt actually committed the crimes. Their case is incredibly sad.

Anyhow, I support those filmmakers- I will certainly have to see the metallica film.

a few of the "official" Pearl Jam bootlegs which Eddie gives his support to the WM3...

I agree about the second "Paradise Lost" movie in which the "freak show" seemed rather disturbly bolden to me...Kinda ironic that his wife died "mysteriously" (I don't buy into that she overdosed and died in her sleep and he awoke the next morning to find her dead in their bed) and he is now incarcerated for multiple 'petty' crimes, For someone who is supposedly "close to the Lord" as he had stated, I find that to be further from the truth.

Matter-of-fact, I saw a morning news show awhile back where people who served time with the "freak show" in the Arkansas penal system said he openly admitted he killed those kids. He supposedly killed them because he caught his step-son & the other 2 boys masturbating together and went berserk in a psychotic rage, Thus murdering/mutalating the three in his house then later removing the bodies to the creek where the bodies were found.

He was stated as saying to these other prisoners since Damien, Jesse & the other kid (His name escapes me) are "already guilty in the eyes of the public why should I admit to it?"...Man, isnt that 'Christian like'? (No offense to my Christian friends who post here...I just think the man is the epitome of being a hypocrite)

Hopefully the TRUTH will come out and the WM3 will be freed.

I don't think there really are any contenders out there. I can't recall the title, but there was a flick about global warning and it's affect. The most interesting thing was the survival method. If you're in NYC and there's a freeze on, GO TO THE LIBRARY. You can burn all the books and survive.

Signs scared the HELL out of me when I saw it. I was afraid to look at TVs that weren't turned on for a while after seeing that movie. But then again, I can't watch any of those alien abduction or whatever specials on TV because they freak me the hell out.

Oh, but it's so hilarious! I saw Anchorman the night before I saw N.D. and N.D. blew Anchorman out of the water. Granted, they are two totally different movies, but Anchorman was really bad, I mean really bad, and this is for a movie that threw ANYTHING comedic on the wall to see if sticks. Not much did.

It was black and white for no apparent reason, probably to give it more of an "arty" feel which I found absurd. The plot was non-existant, the dialogue was torturous, and the movie just rambled on pointlessly for an hour and a half. I couldn't wait for it to be over. Lord save anyone who rents it when it's out on DVD.

The dialogue itself would be embarrassing if it wasn't so amateurish. I've heard that it was mostly improvised, and if so, I hope none of these actors give up their day jobs and take up screenwriting. The use of black and white film is so ridiculously obvious (black and white = coffee and cigarettes...it's so clever, I can't stand it  ) that it's laughable. Bill Murray was unwatchable, which was shocking to me. What a stain on the resumes of everyone involved.
