I thought Kerry's speech tonight was very good as well..I do wish he had spent a little more time shutting up critics about his voting record...would've helped...
Everything went well until the end....when while watching CNN I noticed the massive amounts of balloons on the ceilings never came down...and the guy in control accidentally had his mic still connected to CNN...I dunno why they never caught it...but the whole time hes gone "no balloons...no balloons...still no balloons...where the hell are the ballons?" and finally he let go "what the fu*k is going on up there???" whew, caught me off guard some lol...i wonder if all the channels got that feed or just CNN...gotta love live tv ...here comes your fines CNN! lol
Judy Woodruff said afterwards "as you see the balloons havent come down...and _____ (cant remember his name) has been trying to figure it out....and is obviously pretty upset...you may have heard some profanity, sorry...it was an accident...obviously he didnt know the mic was on."

I fell asleep shortly into his speech, but I thought his daughters were excellent, especially Alex.
Also, I missed all of Clark's speech because I was out.
BTW, Jack Edwards sure is a cute little kid. The cameras were loving him.

I actually thought his speech was very well done, I am still undecided (Except voting for Kenny McCormick...hehehehe) but leaning a bit more towards Kerry/Edwards than for Shrub/Dick.
But one MAJOR complaint that po'd me off:

Glitch Broadcasts Convention Snafu on CNN
1 minute ago
BOSTON - The Democrats have a balloon problem. John Kerry (news - web sites) concluded his acceptance speech Friday night, the jubilant convention crowd cheered and the balloons dropped. A few of them. Too few.
"Go balloons," said convention producer Don Mischer, instructing the balloon droppers. "Go balloons. Go balloons!" His voice was becoming increasingly frantic — and it was going out over CNN.
"I don't see anything happening," he said angrily. Unknown to him, CNN was running his name and title across the bottom of the screen.
Long minutes after the place was supposed to be a blizzard of balloons and confetti, Mischer was still shouting that it wasn't happening, at least it wasn't right. Viewers saw a lot of balloons, in fact, and Kerry, family members and delegates happily batted them around. But nothing like the 100,000 that had been supposed to cascade down.
At one point Mischer used a profanity to rebuke his balloon-dropping crew. CNN was still broadcasting his voice.
Finally, they all showered down. And Mischer's unhappy moment of TV fame was over.
His stage instructions were available to all major media covering the convention during the week — for their guidance, not for broadcast.

estranged...i was undecided for the longest time myself...but no longer..it is very clear to me which candidate (out of the two main ones) reflects what I believe mostly...and that's Kerry..
I loved John Kerry saying "Teddy Roosevelt wouldnt have been able to do this in his speech....but I want to tell you to find out more information on the issues visit johnkerry.com "
I do encourage that..if you haven't...visit Johnkerry.com it gives clear, and thought out points on MANY MANY issues that we all hold true to us...
Another suggestion..a very good site to go to : Presidential Match (http://www.presidentmatch.com/Guide.jsp2)
That site is very cool...you are given a questionarre concerning your feelings on numerous issues...and in the end it tells you which candidate you are most compatible with on the issues...in a percentage...very cool..you should try it...everyone should try it...

It was a great speech. I too wish that he'd addressed his voting record as well, I'm tired of having to defend it, but still- he was kicking ass and taking names, especially in regards to the war in Iraq. It was great. So many view him as not being a strong leader in that regard- and I think both him tonight and Clinton on Monday (strength & wisdom are not mutually exclusive) did much to turn that around.

I was impressed by future president (heehee) Kerry last night. He's got my vote (although he's pretty much had it for a while.
My favorite part (I swear I yelled "YES!") was when he said "we need to stop opening up fire stations in Bahgdad & closing them in the United States."

OT - anyone else want Teresa H. Kerry to get a new 'do? Or at least comb her hair? She's an attractive, well-spoken intelligent woman & her hair looks like a rat's nest. I could usually care less about hair, but hers really bugs me for some odd reason.

he was kicking ass and taking names, especially in regards to the war in Iraq. It was great.
I guess I was watching a different speech. He glossed over his own record on Iraq (he was vehement that Iraq had WMD), which he's gotta know is the sticking point with undecided, anti-war voters. It was actually rather disappointing. At least defend it. But, no, he acted like it was unimportant. It's easy enough to tear the other guy down; it's a little harder to explain your own position.
Overall the speech was decent, not great. Hell, if I were basing my vote on the best speech, Rev. Al would get my vote. He fired up the crowd more than Kerry did. Kerry was short on how he plans to accomplish what he claims he will accomplish, but that is not unusual for this sort of speech.
No doubt the country will be better off if Kerry wins, but long term, unless he takes a very different tack from Clinton, we are going to continue our dangerous slide to the right. I notice that his campaign has been surrounding itself with the old Clinton gang, much like Dubya did with Reagan and Bush I types. We need to move forward, not constantly look back. Looking back is only useful as far as ensuring that you don't repeat the same mistakes. John Kerry already failed at that by voting for the Iraq war.
I hope he wins and I hope I am wrong about the kind of presidency he will give us. But I don't see it happening.
John Kerry would get my vote if he admitted he made a mistake, apologized to the families of the dead servicemen and women and pledged to withdraw from Iraq within six months of taking office.
The episode in which he saved his comrade from certain death in the Mekong waters says a lot about Kerry as man. Unfortunately so does his vote to allow the Bush administraton to attack Iraq.

He'll have opportunity enough to explain his voting record re: the war during the debates.
Carne, as far as promising to withdraw the troops within 6 months--I don't think he should promise that. We are there and need to finish the job. What Kerry has talked about is a coalition to come in (if he could get one together) and relieve some of our troops. But we can't just pull out of there without a sound exit strategy. It would make things even worse than they are now. We're kind of stuck for the time being IMO.

Point taken, but I think that line meant just because the US is at war in another country doesn't mean we should forget about our own country's problems.

Sorry, but you don't know that leaving right now would make matters worse. Nobody does. The fearmongers would have us believe that all hell will break lose. Well, hasn't it already? We simply don't know what kind of chaos would happen if we left Iraq or whether it would be worse than the current chaos and the chaos that is likely to continue as long as we remain there. While we had the ability to predict what would happen if we attacked Iraq, and some predicted exactly what is happening, the situation has now become way too confusing and murky to try and guess what could happen if we left cold. Like it or not, our troops will be pulled out, either slowly as is happening now, or we do it right: Pull out at once and pay reparations. It would be cheaper to do that.
All we need to do to understand this is to study the experience of other empires throughout history. My own native country was an empire. Ever since it finally let go of the last colonies in the 1970s, it has not had any reason to go to war at all (save for token presences in American-led conflicts, such as the Gulf War, which it would not have gotten into otherwise.) And guess what? It is a far more prosperous and stable country as a result. Empires are doomed to fail.
From a strictly economic standpoint, we need to cut and run. This Iraq misadventure is a disaster the lingering proportions of which are not trivial:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=66&ncid=66&e=1&u=/bw/20040729/bs_bw/nf200407299971db045
The damage is done. The end of empire is near. Why insist on prolonging the agony? There's absolutely no possible positive outcome of this Iraq misadventure. John Kerry should know better.
Incidentally, Teresa Heinz-Kerry was born in what was then a colony of the empire I mentioned above. She knows first-hand that empires are doomed to fail. You'd think she would have advised her hubby accordingly before he placed that fatal vote on the war on Iraq.

Yes Carne, I know the debates aren't the be-all and end-all, but I think his voting record on the war and on the no vote for the $87 billion in aid for the troops will be a hot topic. He'll probably spin his way around the questions, as any recent politician is wont to do. So I guess I kind of agree with you. Shock!
And you're right, I DON'T know what the outcome would be if we withdrew the troops immediately. I was simply voicing my opinion that things would be worse in Iraq. You could be entirely right. And from an economic standpoint ITA agree with you. We would be better served to cut and run. But I still don't think Kerry should PROMISE to withdraw within 6 months. If he reneged, it would be political suicide. Just being politically pragmatic here.

Here's how I knew that Kerry had given a great speech--the commentators on CNN & MSNBC were stunned into silence for a long period after the speech was over. If you can get Chris Matthews to shut up--you know you've accomplished something! Then, all they could find to criticize him with was that his delivery of the speech was too fast! I guess they couldn't quibble with the content so they had to find fault with the delivery.

Do you really think that's what happened!? They always do that. It is common practice to let the guy have his moment while the crowd reacts. Besides, CNN was too busy broadcasting the frantic urgings of the convention organizer to drop more balloons. What the hell were they thinking to keep the guy's mic on?

Bush is going to get up there at his convention and blow all kinds of sunshine. If he is reelected, he will continue power unchecked, furthering the military industrial complex plan thought up by his father and his cronies. As for paying for the war, they've already looted the treasury. George's main job is to line the pockets of his elitist/fundamentally religious base that got him elected. His is a puppet of the oil companies using the Book Of Revelations as his guideline.

I realize that his vote for the War In Iraq is (at least seemingly) your biggest hang-up in regards to John Kerry, and that's fine... it's your opinion and it's understandable.
But this much can be said about John Kerry... he's a Vietnam vet, who served his country ably and proudly. He "fought in the trenches," as they say.
And maybe it's just me, but if anyone is going to send our troops off to war... even if it's a war I disagree with... I'd MUCH rather it be a man who's actually legitimately served in the military himself, and not someone with a dubious and spotty stint in the National Guard.

There was idle chatter about him possibly saying that he won't accept a salary if he's elected. But that's all it was, chatter. I think if he had said that, he'd have the election in the bag (not that he doesn't now ;) ).
how can you say that? have you seen how close they are in the polls? you may think kerry is gonna win (speaking of which do you guys truly endorse kerry or do you just prefer him over bush? usually its the latter) but its certainly not in the bad by any means....there was one poll that show bush leading in electoral votes. i dont recall where i saw that. i think it was an article on my yahoo homepage a couple days ago. but either wayt its definitely no in the bag. thats like saying the red sox who are 7.5 games out of first with 2 months to play.....are out of contention.

Somehow I suspect the polls are going to be way off this year. I mean, are the polls really counting all the folks that Puff Daddy and Andre 3000 are persuading to register to vote? Somehow, I suspect those folks won't be voting for Bush.

how can you say that? have you seen how close they are in the polls? you may think kerry is gonna win (speaking of which do you guys truly endorse kerry or do you just prefer him over bush?
I fully endorse Kerry and his politics. I have had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach about Bush since December 2000.
http://zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=849
The most recent Zogby poll shows deeper trouble for President George W. Bush beyond just the horserace. Mr. Bush has fallen in key areas while Senator John Kerry has shored up numerous constituencies in his base. The Bush team’s attempted outreach to base Democratic and swing constituency has shown to be a failure thus far, limiting his potential growth in the electorate.
The most important group in this election now is the undecideds and Mr. Bush’s standing among them is weak. He is generally well liked among the undecideds, having a strong favorability (56%), but his job performance is another story. Only 32% approve of Bush’s job in office and only 31% believe the country is headed in the right direction. The undecideds are not yet sold on Mr. Kerry, with only 49% having a favorable opinion of him. But Mr. Kerry can still sell his message to them: over a quarter (28%) are either not familiar enough or are not sure of their opinion yet. These undecided voters are generally dissatisfied with the President, but are still not acquainted enough with the Senator from Massachusetts to support him.
The Bush campaign’s efforts to court voters in the Hispanic, Jewish, and Catholic communities seem to have fallen flat. Mr. Kerry is leading Mr. Bush by a similar margin to that which former Vice-President Al Gore won among Jewish voters in 2000. Mr. Bush is also running far behind his 2000 Hispanic total, with only 19% of the Hispanic voters supporting him, while Mr. Kerry is beating Mr. Gore’s total with 69%. Mr. Kerry is also running very strong among Catholics, topping Mr. Bush, 52% to 37%, showing that not only has Bush’s courting of them failed, but his use of wedge issues like gay marriage and partial birth abortion have failed to separate Catholic voters from Kerry.
The Senator’s lead among Catholics is similar to the Clinton margins of the 1990s.
Mr. Bush has also shown weakness in what is considered to be his best region, the South. While Kerry’s choice of Senator John Edwards gives him his biggest boost, his economic populism and courting of veterans are also key in his eroding of Mr. Bush’s support. Not only has Kerry now come to a tie with Bush in favorability in the South (55% for both), the Kerry-Edwards ticket has pulled ahead, 48% to 46% in the South. President Bush’s job performance is down to only 44% in the South, and only 43% of Southerners think the country is headed in the right direction.
Mr. Kerry is also performing well in Blue states, among Young voters and among Single voters. In the Blue states, Mr. Kerry is winning 50% to 38%, while in the Red States, Mr. Bush is only winning 48% to 46%. Among Single voters, Mr. Kerry is winning huge by a total of 69% to 19%. And among young voters – 18-29 year olds – a group Al Gore only won by 2 points in 2000, Kerry is winning in a landslide, 53% to 33%.
There are three factors contributing to Senator Kerry’s lead in the electorate; first is President Bush’s eroding base, second is his failure in outreach to swing groups and base Democratic constituencies, and third is Mr. Kerry’s strengthening of his base. Mr. Kerry also has the potential to open a bigger lead in two areas. First, among the undecided voters, if Mr. Kerry can sell himself as a viable alternative to Mr. Bush, he stands to make large gains amongst the small, but significant chuck of undecideds. Second is in the turnout arena, Mr. Kerry’s large leads amongst Hispanics – who will potentially make up a great portion of the electorate than they did in 2000 – and young voters – who numerous non-partisan groups like Rock the Vote and MTV are targeting – will stand to boost his total share of the vote with every point their turnout increases. Mr. Kerry is showing a 2-to-1 lead (50% to 25%) amongst voters who didn’t vote in 2000, while winning three-quarters (75%) of Ralph Nader’s voters and stealing twice as many (8% to 4%) of Mr. Bush voters in 2000 than Bush is stealing of Gore voters in 2000

how can you say that? have you seen how close they are in the polls? you may think kerry is gonna win (speaking of which do you guys truly endorse kerry or do you just prefer him over bush? usually its the latter) but its certainly not in the bad by any means....there was one poll that show bush leading in electoral votes. i dont recall where i saw that. i think it was an article on my yahoo homepage a couple days ago. but either wayt its definitely no in the bag. thats like saying the red sox who are 7.5 games out of first with 2 months to play.....are out of contention.
It's in the bag, especially with the new report that the economy is stalled and will get worse by November. It's stopped growing, my friend. :wavey:
And, yes, I do endorse Kerry. I'm not thrilled with everything about him, but I agree with a lot of it.

Somehow I suspect the polls are going to be way off this year. I mean, are the polls really counting all the folks that Puff Daddy and Andre 3000 are persuading to register to vote? Somehow, I suspect those folks won't be voting for Bush.
Exactly. They do no polling when it comes to newly registered voters and the newly registered voters are registering because they want Bush gone.
