View Full Version : Stevie changing lyrics live

Thinking (again) about lyrics. I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that Stevie changes her live lyrics in relation to what's going on in her life at the time.

Example: Outside the Rain:

Initially, "it's one more link in the chain, I don't believe that" I take it as her telling everyone that she CAN be a successful solo artist, without Mac. She's not JUST part of the chain (the Mac).

Mid 80's, live, "well, Mick says 'Stevie this is just one more link in the chain', and I say, 'I have to/do believe that/him/it'" Was this her telling everyone that she'd never break the chain? That she HAS TO believe that she'll always be a part of Mac?

Other shows (later ones, if I recall, like late 80's/early 90's) she sometimes went back to "I can't/don't believe that/him." There was a lot of turmoil in the band at this time, was this a purposeful change in the lyric?

Another obvious one would be "take your silver springs & dig your grave" on the BTM Tour (was that line done in Manchester only?)

Any thoughts?

I think that sometimes these ad-libs or changes are related to something in particular, but I've always had the feeling that a lot of the time, Stevie's just emoting loosely at the microphone, & whatever comes out might carry through for the next several shows, the whole tour, or even through several tours.
Another obvious one would be "take your silver springs & dig your grave" on the BTM Tour (was that line done in Manchester only?)Apparently, she sang that a bunch of times that year. Somebody once said it was related to the fight with Mick, but that fight didn't start until the following year.

Wouldn't she have said "take my Silver Springs & dig your grave"? I know it's a FM song but she did write it. She was pretty mad about it being dropped from the album or would that have been too harsh? Or did she just screw up her lines?

Maybe she meant he was treating the song like it didn't belong to her.

How about:

"singin' it to ya!" on Red Rocks or the "sister, brother, sister, brother, etc. of the MOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!! (accompanied by the freak out gibberish)" on the Mirage tape? I like the last change up but the "singin' it to ya" is a little much. I much prefer the "yeah yeah's" inserted into the Belladonna tour EO17: "ooh baby, ooh, said yeah, yeah" and then the kick! Awesome!!

I also like the Storytellers EO17 when she sings/talks, "and the sea does not change, it does not change it doesn't etc"....and also "I know what it sounds like, I know what it sounds liiiiiiiiiiiiike."

Or how about the Stand Back change up? "One man, he did not fall, but he asked me for too much, I said take meeeeeeeee!" That's also a great one.

And Jake, I love "still I am a fool" too!! :blob1:

On the TISL tour, after 9/11, on GDW didn't she sing "well it's a heartless challenge, you pick your path and then you pay" directed towards Osama bin laden?

I love the versions (like the one on The Chain boxed set)when she sings "he asked me for too much, I said well, TAKE IT ALL!"

Her love? Her money? Her songs? Take all of what? And is "he" Kim or Mick or LB or someone else?

Ahhh, yes. That's a good one. I think she means take all of the above. You know she's always said that she could never keep a man in her life because she wasn't willing to put him first and give up her career/lifestyle so I think she's saying, fine, take it all and see how it kills me, my life is so tragic, yaddah, yaddah, yaddah...I think it's Stevie being fed up with the difficulty of maintaining romantic relationships.

I thought about that, but then I thought she said "your" deliberately and in a mean way. Sort of like take my beautiful song that is mine, but you are hatefully calling YOUR'S - and dig your grave with it because I am outta here bozo.

I was under the impression that this line was directly aimed at Mick - wasn't she starting to put Timespace together around 1990 for its release in 1991? They may have started fighting about it already by the BTM tour.

Actually one of my favorites is from the "Solid Gold" performance of Stand Back, during the last stanza she sings "One man said he could not stay/And I said well, darlin' goodbye/well GO AWAY!"

I've never heard her sing it that way any other time...

Let me listen to the Bonner Springs show and see if that's it.

Also from the Homdel NJ show 8/1/94 from Rhiannon:

Taken by the sky
Ohh but Rhiannon you say
then she's gone
and your life asks you why
your life...(unintelligible)

Before the song had been dropped this year, she screamed GO AHEAD AND TRY!! in Atlanta and back in December at the last London show, she looked at Lindsey and yelled "TRY! TRY! TRY! TRY!" I used to have a little snippet of that from a friends digicam. Very intense

Are you sure it's not the version from the 'Red Rocks' video? Many fans insist that's what she's singing in that performance (I am not one of those people however).

Are you sure it's not "whole wide world"? That's the been the standard line for the past nearly twenty years. I can't imagine her changing it at one show....and Kansas, no doubt.

Pertaining to the original post in this thread, I think her originally saying, "Well, it's one more link in the chain, I know" was like her being told that it's one more link in the chain, and later in the RAL tour she seems to reveal Mick is the one that told her that. I always considered Outside the Rain to be about Mick (creature of the night) and their relationship, and in this part he's saying that all their relationship is is "one more link in the chain," but "[she doesn't] believe that." Of course, the song is sort of angry, and I thought they broke it off peacefully, so I may be wrong. Heh, probably am.

Apparently, she sang that a bunch of times that year ("Take your Silver Springs and dig your grave"). Somebody once said it was related to the fight with Mick, but that fight didn't start until the following year.

Perhaps she had just begun to think about what she wanted to do with Silver Springs the following year, so it was on her mind a lot? It does sound interesting as an alternate lyric, despite the fact that one cannot "dig" with a "springs" like they can a "spoon". :)

Perhaps also Stevie had in fact already "unofficially" mentioned the idea to Mick and knew he disapproved, but did not yet know to what extent?

That says a lot, doesn't it?! I love that Stevie has always put herself out there emotionally to an extreme. If I had to pick one thing at the core of it all that "makes Stevie, Stevie", it would be that. "Still I am a fool"="I'm still writing songs for this guy?!" I get the feeling she looks upon it with fondness, though, as opposed to self-criticism. Didn't she say in a recent interview that she still loves to write songs about LB, and he still loves her to write them for him? :)
