Well, folks, history repeats itself. Now it seems PBS is postponing the Lindsey Soundstage show, and before long we'll be hearing how Lindsey is working on the solo album. Then we'll hear that he is considering folding it into an FM record. Then we'll wait two more years for a release.

Best thing to do is forget about Lindsey for a while (I may even stop frequenting this forum; it gets terribly frustrating to constantly wait on this man to release music... but don't hold your breath. ;))

Pick up some new music. Here are some recommendations:

A3, Last Train to Mashville, Vol. 2. This is the band that does the theme to the Sopranos. This record contains nothing but acoustic versions of its electronic urban blues numbers, including an unplugged cut of "Woke Up this Morning."

Marah, 20,000 Streets Under the Sky. After garnering effusive critical acclaim with its 2000 release of Kids in Philly, Marah decided to go pop and recorded a vapid, over-produced, echo-y record that completely flopped. Now, the band goes back to the organic, rootsy sound of Kids in Philly. Streets isn't quite as good, but it's a very decent effort.

These two records, in addition to the Stones classic "Beggars Banquet," have been in heaviest rotation on my iPod lately.

Steve Earle is releasing an album in about a month that is supposed to be very political. I'll probably get that. His last studio album, Jerusalem, was tremendous.

What recommendations do you have?

Pat Metheny Group "The Road to You"

this is Rock/Jazz This group has some of the best musician's in the world.

And if he folds another solo project into an FM record I am going to run down to Warner's Bro's myself and throw a fit! (it's just down the street from me)

Oh almost forgot Carne:

"In The Meantime" Christine McVie

this is a woman who played piano, composed, produced, and sang with LB for about 22 years, she has a beautiful unique voice and does the straightforward stuff better than anyone, and once in a while she pulls out some great harmonies. :xoxo:

her and Lindsey like to go oooh ahhh ohhh ahhh ohhh ahhh on the same mike for hours while staring at each other :]

Christine McVie, hey?

"In The Meantime" Christine McVie

I'll second that.

I'm also delving into some other artists like Kate Bush, Rush, and maybe even Blue Oyster Cult. And, some of my old favorites.

As for recommendations... besides "In the Meantime"...

"The Nightfly" by Donald Fagen. An awesome album! Two thumbs up smilies!

Wilco - A Ghost Is Born
Like the last one, this album is really getting under my skin - love all the screaming guitar solos. In fact - the sometimes over the top solos remind me a little of some of Lindsey's work on Say You Will but with a Neil Young/Jimi Hendrixish twist.

Grant-Lee Phillips - Virginia Creeper
Every track is great. Beautiful acoustic rockers with gorgeous harmonies.
If you ever get a chance to see Grant live, don't miss him. He is one of a kind talent.

Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway
Mark Kozelek is at it again with his beautiful voice and masterful guitar-playing. The gifted songwriter switches gears from the Red House Painters, but the music is essentially the same.

Dan Zanes - Sea Music A Gathering of Sea Songs
Ex Boston Rocker turned kids music impresario returns with a collection of ocean going covers and a few originals. My daughter's current favorite cd to dance to. Adult music for all ages

Mark Lanegan Band - Bubblegum
(read about it and watch his straight rocking video "sideways in reverse" here:
http://www.beggars.com/banquet/index.htm?../artists/mark_lanegan/index.htm&0 )

And I totally agree on the Wilco-album.

Curious about Grant Lee "buffalo" Philips, good recommendation, forgot about that one!

Some quick combined associations (after a twoweek holiday with my small family) on this thread...:

About politics, I read Bruce Springsteen's political pamflet yesterday.... Impressive.
I don't think a lot of Americans will love the next Steve Earle because of his political views...last one was brilliant. But I bet he's not going for that "change"-tour from Bruce....although they both LOVE Marah!! I just fastly went though their new album today in the musicshop. Sounded a little flat on first impression. Should I really go for it Carne?

But..........
I'll take alot of music back to the shop for a Lindsey-record (with rythm-section :D ) in the beginning of next year, because.....

Greg Dulli is working with Mark Lanegan a lot lately and is one of my other faves besides Lindsey.
The fact that he covers What Makes You think You're the One not only makes this coveralbum interesting, but besides it's great that Camper covered all of Tusk, I think this cover will be a REAL big bow towards lindsey's songwriting, by a REAL no-commercial-bull**** rock'n'roll animal that Dulli is....

and that can push away my No-Lindsey-blues for a while....(read: a day or two :D ;) )

I'm going to see Mark Lanegan at the 25th. Have a good time with Dulli & co!

Soundstage is NOT being postponed. The link that was posted was for a Chicago station, not the schedule for every PBS in the country. It's airing the first week of September in my area.

And I think Christine's new album blows.

The production is sooooooooooo blah and the music is so elevator-ish. And after a few songs, I feel like banging my head against a wall. Every song is the same thing and there are only so many ways to write the same song without being boring. What a snore, IMO.

I found her album hard to take as a work of its own. However, when I mixed the songs with SYW, it became much more easy to take and I've found I like her songs. Give it a try.

Gerald, the new Marah is not quite as good as Kids in Philly. I'm beginning to think that band had only one great album in them. A shame, really. But it's a decent effort, nonetheless.

I tried doing that, but the songs just don't mesh well together at all, IMO. I think the whole album is just very weak, especially since she doesn't have Lindsey's production backing her up or any of the old harmonies. :)

I haven't found Christine's album to be very exciting. I tend to think that she could have benefitted in a major way from Lindsey Buckingham's production. Same goes for Stevie. Let's face it, Lindsey rules.

I respect your opinion, but I'm not waiting for anything easy to take from the Mac.

Chris' new album is just one big yawn. I love her for what she did 25-years-ago and earlier though....

I'm going to see Mr Lanegan too, at the beginning of September.
We can compare notes!

Cool! Did you hear his new album? It's fabulous. Very dynamic, off course darker than burned out black....eh...darker than burned out black  and sooo sweet. I love him.

(how do you exaggerate black in english? )

current faves:
Driving Death Valley Blues (how raw can music get?).
One Hundred Years. Maybe because of the unbelievable beautiful duetting parts with Chris Goss. (I attended two Macshows in the States in a Masters Of Reality-shirt. Noone I met knew them...Until I met Brian J. )

This album could be my album of the year very easily.

Yep, Bubblegum is great. I dunno which is my favourite song yet, since I only just got the album but I am loving the Stooges vibe on Sideways In Reverse.

Have you seen Mark Lanegan live before?
I’ve seen him twice with Screaming Trees and a couple of times with Queens Of The Stone Age, but never solo, so I’m really looking forward to this gig :)

Once with Screaming Trees (he was more dead than alive back then) looked like a warmed up dead body, but everyone had to put one step back when he opened his mouth
I saw him with Queens a couple of times, too and shook his hand and talked to him for about 7 minutes backstage at Pinkpop three years ago(?) where he was with The Queens. He looked (and sounded) strong and healthy. But I think Josh and Nick pulled him down again in more drug-behaviour the last few years. Maybe he has it in "control" right now. Never saw him in cocert solo. This will be the first time. Gets life better during No-Lindsey-blues.

just like me then!
I wonder if he'll ever do another album with the Screaming Trees, Sweet Oblivion and Dust are classics.

Have you got the last Twilight Singers album? There's an awesome duet with Greg and Mark. I heard talk that they're eventually gonna record an album together too.

Yes I've got that album. Great. Those two Trees-albums are among my faves of all time. I think I've played Sweet Oblivion as much as I've played Tusk the last 12 years. It's my fave album of all time after Tusk and Masters Of Reality's Sunrise on the Sufferbus.

I hope that Mark and Greg will record a cover of I'm so afraid. Not with the high notes but in a low register. Wouldn't that be totally awesome?

PS: maybe he WILL record something with the trees in the future. I asked him when I met him he said something like " the trees are history for now. They're like my family. The Queens are my friends. "

I thought that was very nicely put. And when you have a fight or break-up with your friends, don't we all come back to our family?....

Well, wishful thinking I suppose.

The first time I saw the Trees live they were supporting Alice In Chains (and blew them off stage) AND they were the only support act I've ever seen that got such a overwhelming response that they were forced to come back on and do an encore. Props to AIC for allowing them to do it, but the crowd were yelling and screaming for them to come back on!!! They were simply amazing that night.

Wow, that must have been a hell of a performance. When I saw The Trees they had a smashing supportact that got me into tears so beautiful. It was Eels just after they released Beautiful Freak. What a night. First Eels and than the Trees. I can't think of a better line up of a concert I attended. Two bands so different yet so on top of their thing. (it was just after The Trees overwhelmed me with the release of Dust.)
It was almost as emotional for me as seeing Lindsey perform live for the first time on july 1st 2003.

I am sure Lanegan gets me by the throat again on the 25th.

PS: I'd rank that first MOR-album close to the aforementioned albums. That's a rock- album with Led Zep-quality but with a better singer....

Well, I went to see the Twilight Singers last night and it was INCREDIBLE!
Sadly, no What Makes You Think Your The One or even a snippet of Rhiannon, but still a fantastic show. Greg even played two Afghan Whigs songs at the end.
Can't wait to see Mark Lanegan now!!!

ALRIGHT!!

I'm really glad you enjoyed it so much. Was it A hard rocking show or did they put in a lot of more melodic slow moments. And which Whigs-songs did they play?

You can now download a 30 second clip of the Twilight Singers' version of What Makes You Think You're The One here:

http://www.onelittleshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=407

Sounds wicked! :D

Wow!!! sounds great. Whole album does. But still.....in some way you can never overdo the quirkiness of the original. Question: How is it possible that such great, original artists like CVB, Twilight singers, can not win from the originals like Lindsey made them, when it comes to quirkiness??

shackin'up
08-20-2004, 01:18 PM
It could just be they've decided to take the quirkiness out in order to make it different. I mean, some of CVB's Tusk covers are still pretty quirky.
As for WMYTYTO, CVB's version is less manic and Dulli's version sounds like he's tried to make it into a lounge song.

But yes, you're right, while they're interesting interpretations nothing can outdo the originals.

Did you ever buy that Mark Lanegan covers album, I'll Take Care Of You?
It's pretty good too.

Yes, a great cover-album. I think I liked Field songs and Whiskey for the holy ghost the most, until Bubblegum. takes some more time to rank that one but it's definately a candidate for best solo-album. But those two nineties trees-albums will always be the best.
I own everything the man brought out officially. (not all the appearances on albums of others, just a few.) I bought them all in the first week of release since Sweet Oblivion, which I played today VERY LOUD (I was alone in the house today, so you can imagine the volume....). I bounced around the house the whole time  .

So here is a recommendation especially for those who speak german or at least understand what is being said in german. Gerald, Mari and all the other dutch or german Ledgies... (Antje, Maik still around...?)
I bought the latest album of "Niels Frevert" from Hamburg, former singer, song writer, producer and 2nd guitarist of the "Nationalgalerie", a band that split up 1997. Frevert has witty lyrics, a unique voice, which I like very much (no not a la american idol- his voice has character but he surely is no Pavarotti) There`s a german gossip term called "nölige Stimme", which describes his voice pretty good- whoever understands german knows what I mean. However he is fairly unsuccesful saleswise- just like our man here- and club- tours alone with his guitar. He changed his songs to acoustic numbers by doing that, so there is a completely different live feeling then- something that I appreciate very much. Not just copying the album but being quite creative and intense on stage.
Another LB parallel is that it took 6 years for him for releasing his 2nd solo album because of record company problems etc. Didn`t I hear that before...? I appreciate that he is writing and producing his own stuff too. Now he joined a new little label, called Tapete Records, which features a few selected artists- consciously being a counterpart to the larger industry. They don't make much money and they never will. Frevert admitted to need to get some jobs from time to time to get by and be able to pay the rent. Hopefully he will go on making music...
However if you like check out the album. It is called "Seltsam öffne mich" from Niels Frevert :wavey:

Bye and don't forget:
